Waiting Game
Kris Tilley-Lubbs, retired teacher at Virginia Tech: “Going through the tenure process at Virginia Tech was like having a fear of being fired. I knew that if I didn't get tenure at the end of my six years, I would be asked to leave, so I lived for all that time with a total fear of not being able to stay. … I knew that if I did not get tenure, I would have to go back to teaching public school, and that seemed like a fate worse than death at the time. I did get tenure and I was there for a total period of 22 years, but I have to say they were stressful years.”
