It is an A5 size booklet, stapled with colour plus black and white printed on quality paper. The Companion will be printed on 115gsm gloss paper giving it a very high quality feel. It will have ‘longevity’ and because of it’s size, content, look and feel it will be kept by the majority of households until the next issue arrives, thereby giving advertisers ‘immdiacy’ of access’ when their services are required.

For some, retirement is a blissful release from the pressures of work. Many retired people are more than happy to swap their job for a more relaxed existence: pottering round the garden, visiting friends and taking up new hobbies. However, if you are now several months or years into your retirement and you are feeling bored, restless and discontented, it may be time to consider going back to work. A law was passed in 2011 preventing the automatic dismissal of employees at retirement age, and nowadays around 1.5 million people in the UK work beyond the state pension age of 65. Recent research by the USA’s Oregon State University even suggests that people who work beyond that age could lengthen their lives by staying more active and engaged. So what do you need to consider if you are planning to return to work? Get your CV in order If you haven’t updated your CV for a while, an online search will reveal the latest advice on style, content and layout. If you have a long employment history, give priority to the latest, most relevant roles.

It is important to tailor your skills, qualities and achievements to the job for which you are applying. For example, if you were once the CEO of a company and you’re now applying to work on a checkout in a garden centre, you could emphasise your ‘people skills’ rather than drawing attention to your leadership qualities. Build up your confidence There are many different ways to brush up your knowledge and skills. Some of these include exploring the internet, visiting your library or community centre or signing up to courses at your local adult education college. Building up your inner confidence is just as important as refreshing your practical skills. Treat yourself to a new hairstyle, new tie or new shoes in preparation for those interviews. If you’ve been absent from the social scene for a while, put yourself in situations where you are likely to meet people, whether that’s a trip to the pub or volunteering to clean up a local beach. Learn about tax and National Insurance requirements Once you reach state pension age, you no longer need to pay National Insurance. If you are working and receiving the

state pension, your pension payments will be counted as income and will therefore be taxable in the same way as your earnings and any savings income you receive. Some workers fear that automatic enrolment on to their new employer’s workplace pension scheme will affect pensions they are already receiving. Tony Attubato of the Pensions Advisory Service says: “It is possible to save in a pension plan while receiving a pension from another. There will generally be no tax consequences of doing this and you will still enjoy tax relief on the contributions you pay.” On 6 September last year, the workplace equality think tank Business in the Community published a report entitled Age in the Workplace. It concluded that keeping older professionals in employment “will retain highly-desired skillsets, maintain a stronger workplace culture and provide growth opportunities for businesses of all sizes”. So if you’ve been languishing at home, feeling under-used and under-valued, it’s time to hang up your gardening gloves. The experts agree there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get back to work.

Hobbies A Resoundingly Successful Hobby By Kate McLelland

Sunday mornings just wouldn’t be the same without them. Weddings would feel less joyous, funerals less solemn. Bell-ringing is a tradition that has lasted for at least two thousand years, so it hardly seems possible that one day local community groups might stop coming together to ring out those powerful messages of joy, sadness and celebration. Unfortunately that day could be closer than you might imagine. A survey recently carried out by BBC local radio shows that bellringers across the country are finding it harder and harder to recruit new volunteers. Almost 75% of the bell-ringers questioned said that over the past ten years they have found it harder to find new recruits, particularly young people under the age of 21. There have even been calls to reclassify bell-ringing as a sport in order to gain access to funding, raise its profile and make it appear ‘cooler’ to a younger generation. Ironically this comes at a time when bell-ringing is more in demand than ever. Over sixty per cent of the BBC survey respondents said that requests for their services had increased over the past decade.

How do I start? You don’t need to be super-fit, or have a lot of upper body strength, to be a bell-ringer. Ringing is the perfect way to enjoy gentle physical exercise and is suitable for people of all ages. The action of pulling on the rope not only gives your muscles a mild workout, it also improves agility, reaction time and co-ordination. There are 40,000 bell-ringers in the UK, many of them qualified to teach. You can find a group near you by going to www.bellringing. org and searching their database, or alternatively ask your local church if they run taster sessions. How do I learn? Novice bell-ringers are usually taught in several stages: during the first session they will learn to handle the bell (this is usually done on a one to one basis); in the second they will learn to ring with others. After this students learn about ‘change ringing’, where ringers are required to sound their bells in a particular order, building up from simple to more complex patterns of ringing. The tutorial period usually ends with a 45-minute session during which students demonstrate that they have mastered the techniques.

The benefits of bellringing Dickon Love, who is Tower Captain at the quaintly named church of St James Garlickhythe in London, describes bell-ringing as “the best of form of heavy metal … a big loud noise. It keeps you fit, there’s a competitive element as well, and it’s a very social thing to do - after each practice without fail you can find us down the local pub.” Many teams also organise monthly gatherings or plan outings to ring bells in different parts of the country, while some are even invited overseas to ring in churches as far away as Australia. If you r competition, you may relish taking part in contests such as the National Twelve-bell Striking Contest. So, if you’re up for some gentle exercise and brain-training, you enjoy socialising with other likeminded people and you want to protect an important part of Britain’s heritage, bell-ringing could be the hobby you’ve been looking for. Join up, and keep those bells sounding well into the future.

Nestling between the seven mountains and a sprinkling of islands in the North Sea, Norway’s second city is one of the prettiest towns on the south-west coast. Bright, colourful, it shines whatever the weather, old and new jostling side by side, just steps away from the scenic wonders of a pristine natural world. Laced with inlets and bays, Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, the perfect base to catch a glimpse of this enticing world, maybe sailing for a few hours on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest, or Osterfjord encircling an island where myriad waterfalls tumble down the cliffs. It’s sheer magic, a hidden paradise which lingers in your mind long after you return to harbour. Highly rated by cruise ships and yachts, Bergen’s maritime vocation dates back to medieval times, enjoying its golden age from the 14th century onwards when the Hanseatic League brought trade and prosperity. Today the finely restored merchants’ houses are the city’s most iconic image, their wooden façades painted in vibrant colours, rising gable to gable along the old Bryggen wharf.

It’s a world heritage site and the most atmospheric part of town, with wooden alleyways festooned in rickety steps and overhanging galleries and craft shops tucked in every corner. Just minutes away at the water’s edge, stalls tempt visitors with succulent summer berries and reindeer sausages half a metre long, while the fish market serves simple but delicious meals under the awnings. When the sun shines on a long summer’s day, restaurants spill out onto the cobbled quay and it feels almost Mediterranean. It’s easy to stroll around Bergen from the medieval fortress to the gleaming high street, from the tip of the peninsula to the esplanade leading down to the lake. Sculptures and fountains pop up here and there and sometimes the sound of violins drifts under the arcades, remembering the local virtuoso Ole Bull, or it could be the haunting echo of a Grieg melody. Both artists were born in Bergen. Meanwhile, in the elegant district above the old town, white weatherboard houses climb up the slopes along the steep meandering lanes or gather higgledy-piggledy in

secluded courtyards. Roses bloom in cottage gardens and the higher you go, the better the views. Now and then the funicular railway makes its way up the mountain where you look across the city and fjords to the islands in the distance. Up there, rambling trails head through forests and heathland dotted with lakes, rocks and cliffs rise above the treeline and when you reach the top of Rundemanen at 568 metres, mountains roll as far as you can see. In these highlands haunted by mysterious trolls, you could encounter a wolverine, a lynx or a bear but visitors who come to see the city lights do not stray far after dark. But according to a local saying, ‘you haven’t been to Bergen if you haven’t been to Ulriken,’ at 643 metres the highest of the seven mountains. As visitors step out of the cable car, many linger on the viewing platform, overwhelmed by the panorama and the cool mountain air, but when the last shreds of mist melt away, the more adventurous head for the summit strewn with boulders and rocks. Especially popular at this time of year is our spacious Fitness Suite. We have some of the most up-to-date equipment, from cardiovascular aids to resistance machines and free weights. And we have recently purchased some of the latest Indoor Cycling bikes. Why not come and try them out? They could help with your New Year’s Fitness Resolutions! Alongside our Fitness Suite is our Studio, which is dedicated to regular classes in Zumba, Pilates, Yoga and Indoor Cycling. Ever popular are our four state-of-the-art Squash Courts, which are air-conditioned and heated as required. Squash Club Night is on Saturdays from 5.30pm and Beginners’ Evening is on Sundays from 5pm to 6pm, and our Squash Coach is available by appointment for those who wish to improve their game.

An essential part of our Tennis is our extensive coaching programme. We have fourteen registered tennis coaches who work at the Club and at local schools. These coaching programmes run throughout the year and cater for all ages and abilities. They are especially important for our growing junior membership. Back indoors there’s plenty of social activities, running regularly right through the winter. Our Quiz Nights, for instance, are usually a sell-out, and there are many other good-fun nights for everyone to join in. And our Clubhouse Bar is an excellent social meeting-place, where you can make new friends and relax with coffee or a drink and order cooked food from our Menu if you wish.

Our squash courts are also ideal for Racketball, another great way to exercise.

If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. Low cost hotel rooms and car hire Several websites, including Lastminute.com, Priceline and Hotwire, have a ‘Top Secret Rooms’ section where you can book a top quality hotel room at a fraction of the usual price. All you need to do is choose a location and the hotel star-rating you’re looking for, and pick a hotel from the list returned. You see a description and the hotel’s star-rating; the only drawback is you don’t know the name of the hotel until you’ve paid. You may be able to find out which hotel it is, however, by typing some of the phrases used in these descriptions into a search engine. You can then read reviews on TripAdvisor. com to check that it’s what you want, as once you’ve paid, there is no facility to get a refund. Does Your Pet Have Joint Problems? Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor. They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but believe me if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely that you will be inclined to call them anything quite so polite! For years I thought people were over-reacting when moles appeared, but having now come across them in great numbers in my own garden, I too have started to have some rather unfriendly thoughts. So what can you do if all of a sudden your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants in your beds and borders suddenly start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and is also inclined to make the surface of the lawn rather slippery. If their runs go beneath your lawn or,

worse still, beneath flowers in a flowerbed or vegetable plants in your vegetable plot or allotment, then because they tunnel quite close to or in amongst the plant roots, they can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought because the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, everything starts to topple inwards, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. To this end you could try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is often said to send moles scampering away. It is an inexpensive and relatively decorative solution AND I’ve seen gardens where it really does seem to work. Similarly, you can try plunging glass bottles into the soil so that just the neck is protruding. As the wind whistles over the mouth

of the bottle the noise and vibrations created may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances can work against moles. It is possible to buy mole smokes which seem to work, in the short term at least. These are rather like fireworks and are inserted into the run where the smoke they produce is unpleasant to the moles. Unfortunately, however, with these and indeed most other smelly deterrents, it is likely that once the smell has subsided the mole will return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. In order for these to be effective you must set them carefully, and because the moles are very aware of human scent it is essential that you wear gloves when setting them up, so you never actually touch the trap with your hands. The trap needs to be correctly set or else there is a risk that the mole could suffer a lot before it dies. Some gardeners find traps work well but I must admit I

know many who have found that they don’t seem to do the job, as it is very difficult for a non-expert trap setter to get it right! Perhaps the most effective means of control is to hire in help by employing a mole catcher. Many of these specialists have worked with moles for many years and are adept at trapping them. Since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next.

It is sometimes said that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles. I have never found that this has any effect whatsoever, but it does seem to work for some gardeners and as the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend.

Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!” The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids

from your cutting-edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than manmade bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound quality. Just watch out if your partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to

buy headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one.

Planning some changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms • To help plan where to place your furniture, draw a scale plan of your room and cut out mini sofas, chairs and other furniture. Move them around until you find the right positions. Life-sized cardboard cut-outs can also be a great help. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. A combination of cupboards at the bottom and shelving above works really well. • To let maximum light into the room, fit a pole or track that

overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. Bear in mind that very full, thick curtains need more ‘stack back’ space than light, thin ones. • Talking of lighting, avoid using a central hanging pendant as your one and only light source if at all possible. Add in table lamps, floor lamps and – if you’re renovating – wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • The TV is, often, the focal point of a living room. But you don’t always want to look at a blank black screen, so consider ways to disguise it when not in use – especially if you socialise a lot in your living room. Can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary? Kitchens • Aim to have tall .cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and the maximum amount of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher

next to the sink at the other end. • If possible, make worktops deeper than usual at 700mm instead of 600mm – that 100mm is more useful as working space than floor space, and will better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose the quietest appliances possible, and design it so that you can hide the washing up from the view of the dining table. • If you paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint, you’ll always have somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger because you can see more floor. Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into full, half and three-quarter hanging space, fitting shelves, drawers and shoe racks as necessary. Look for clever storage gadgets such as tie racks, belt racks and pull-out trays. • Squeezed for space? Use the full height of the room and build fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling, using the less accessible high-up space for storing things you don’t often need. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security.

• Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed are great for reading, and free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is an ideal place to store spare bedding, also providing a handy seat. Children’s rooms • Kids’ tastes change rapidly as they grow up so, unless you want to redecorate every few years, keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral, just changing accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers, bean bags, blinds and lamp shades, as necessary. • Add interest to boring walls by covering them with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, cork tiles, blown-up digital images, maps, flags or wall stickers. • A high-level bed is great for

providing extra space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light level from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in old baby-milk tins, or any other large, washedup tin, as long as it doesn’t have sharp edges. Cover in an offcut of wallpaper for a unified look. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, plastic takeaway boxes, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal. Bathrooms • If you’re on a budget, invest more in the moving parts – taps, shower doors and bath screens – and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and

My seventeen year-old daughter has just passed her driving test, so I was proud to see her set out on her first solo journey. For my peace of mind I would like her to take some advanced driving lessons (she’s learned to pass the driving test, now she needs to learn to drive) but pressure from Dad is not the way to introduce such a thing: she has to have her own “why” in order to want to take them. I relate this to you because of what caught my eye recently: it’s a light-hearted story concerning another similar aged driver. 17 years ago, the parents of Freya Whitelaw were

rushing in their Vauxhall Astra to the maternity hospital. Except Freya wouldn’t wait and Mrs Whitelaw had to be delivered of her on the back seat of the car. Luckily they had made it to the hospital car park, so staff assisted and both mother and baby were fine. Time passed and the Whitelaws kept their Astra as the family runabout. It’s over 19 years old now (and a bit creaky says Freya) but, about to take her driving test, Mum and Dad have passed it on to their daughter as her first car. I’m sure she will pass the driving test with ease and, hopefully, go on to increase her skills behind the wheel. After all, she has her “why” in the history of the car she is driving: she started her life in the back seat so would want to continue a long and safe one in the front. By Iain Betson

James Baggott takes a look behind the scenes of America’s motor show in the Sunshine State For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it. It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway. Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bitesized chunks (unlike its burgers). The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of the pond, or with aspirations to have one, take the event pretty seriously. Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio

SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look. Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a biturbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. The spicy version will have four-wheel drive, the diesel making do with power via the rear wheels. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome. Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-dowe-need-it Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 300 of the 621bhp monsters will be produced and, although pricing is yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000. Mazda used the eve of the first press day to take the wraps off its new CX-5. At an event peppered with nonsense car design gobbledygook, and interspersed with pictures of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red,

which is redder than the last red. Understood? Good. Jaguar was another manufacturer that had decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs). LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell 50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so. Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge - up 50 per cent on its predecessor. However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulfliveried Fords and big-wheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls. Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the real treats.

Long captivating us with their beauty, individuality and scent, for centuries flowers have been a tradition at almost every human celebration and ceremony. Similarly, conveying messages with flowers has been a popular form of botanical code that can be found in art, literature and religion. The lily was featured by artists during Renaissance times to represent the purity of Christ and the Virgin, and in literature, Shakespeare often used flowers for increased emotional emphasis and meaning in his plays. The Victorian artists known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood resurrected the lily in several of their well-known religious paintings such as Rossetti’s The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1848), while Millais borrowed from Shakespeare when he painted his famous work Ophelia (1852), using flowers mentioned in Hamlet for his

background whose meanings would not only have been clear to their Victorian viewer, but also to Shakespeare’s audience 300 years earlier. It was the Victorians who truly embraced flower symbolism and elevated it into an art form which they called floriography. During the sexually repressed Victorian era, using ‘the language of flowers’ made it easier to convey a sensitive message, via a bouquet or with flowers printed on a greetings card, than expressing it verbally. A well-known modern example of this is the red rose that remains a traditional way to say ‘I love you’ on St Valentine’s Day. However, there are actually many other flowers that also offer declarations of love, including the red tulip (passionate love), anemone (unfading love), gladiolus (love at first sight) and the selfevident forget-me-not. These little bouquets so beloved by the Victorians were known as ‘tussie-mussies’ - a term that dates from the 1400s and was used to describe a bunch of sweet-smelling flowers and herbs that had symbolic meaning. Such bouquets were a necessity in medieval times where living conditions were fairly unsanitary. Carrying fragrant flower tussie-mussies or nosegays (the word ‘gay’ means ‘ornament’ in old English) was not only a good way to disguise bad smells, it was also considered essential

to wellbeing as flowers were believed to ward off disease. Becoming fluent in floriography is not an easy task, as many plants have more than one meaning and different cultures place their own interpretation on them. To complicate matters, the colour of a flower can change its meaning - for example, giving a yellow rose means friendship, while a pink rose signifies affection. A dictionary is therefore a must! It is believed that the first floriographical dictionary to be published was Dictionnaire du Language des Fleurs by Joseph Hammer-Pugstall in 1809. The Duchess of Cambridge paid homage to floriography when she chose her wedding bouquet. Sticking to the Royal tradition of using only white flowers, she carried lily of the valley (a return to happiness), sweet william (gallantry), hyacinth (constancy in love), ivy (fidelity) and myrtle (marriage). The myrtle is said to have come from a bush grown from a sprig in a nosegay presented to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert’s grandmother. This Valentine’s Day, instead of the usual red roses, why not try resurrecting a sweet and thoughtful tradition by giving your mister or missus a mussie? Just ensure you avoid basil, candytuft and dogbane, as you would be sending a message of hatred, indifference and deceit!

Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TIP

Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Raspberry & Vanilla Panna Cotta

These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!

Ingredients: • 75g fresh raspberries, pureed

• 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream

• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring

TO SERVE • 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally

• Fresh raspberries

Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling

1. To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm

square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.

2. When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie

cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).

3. To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla

extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.

4. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1.

Remove from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.

5. To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.

The most common problem is no signal or poor signal. That’s usually because you’re too far away from the router, or because there are obstacles between you and the router. Sarah was tidying up in the lounge when she chanced upon my newly purchased motoring publication. “Ferrari Owner? Tom? Have we won the lottery?” I entered carrying a cardboard box. “Not yet dear, but soon we will be rolling in it!” “Tom, what are all these boxes doing in the hall? And why have you got a funny look in your eye?” “I’m excited, that’s all. In these boxes is our future… our fortune.” Unimpressed, Sarah ran a knife down the packing tape and opened up the carton. “Why have you got boxes of coffee and tea? Don’t tell me you’re opening a cafe because the hours are a killer and…” “Don’t be silly. And this isn’t just any old coffee or tea, darling, this stuff is special coffee - it’s the elixir of life. It

Do you remember them? If I hadn’t stopped you we’d be homeless by now.” My sheepish grin gave it away. Sarah strode into the kitchen and after a hefty shove managed to squeeze into the garage. “Tom, you can’t move in here.” It was obvious that Sarah viewed my shrewd investment as just another one of my hair-brained

schemes. I felt that she deserved an explanation. “Sarah darling, this is a new way of doing business. “Oh yeah,” Gary grinned, “I remember that.” “That was Brenda Buttons.” Craig folded his arms and smirked. “She’s your hot date.” “She can’t be,” Gary said. “She’d be about a hundred now.” “Like I said,” Craig smiled, “everyone lies.” “What if it’s really her?” Gary was horrified. “You can have a cosy cuppa and reminisce about dead flies’ graveyard,” Craig laughed. “It’ll be fine.” “It won’t be.” Gary put his head in his hands. “Aren’t there laws about dating dinner ladies?” The computer made a gentle ping. Gary read the screen. “She’s just cancelled on me,” he sighed with relief. “Says she’s got to work.” “Looks like you’ve dodged a bullet,” Craig said. “Delete your profile before she tries to reschedule.” Meanwhile, across town, Brenda Buttons, niece and namesake of the formidable former dinner lady, was cutting the ribbon to open a new supermarket, and wondering whether her budding career as a Kate Middleton lookalike was beginning to get in the way of her love life. eople with learning disabilities, the homeless and children who have caring responsibilities for family members are among those in the borough to benefit from the latest charity donations from Surbiton Farmers’ Market. Chickens for the Stud Nursery in Home Park, raised beds for a new herb and vegetable garden for Kingston’s Night Shelter, and a trip to the Disney on Ice show, Frozen, for young carers are just some of the projects the market will be funding. The award-winning market, held in Maple Road on the third Saturday of each month, has helped raise over £50,000 and supported more than 50 local charities and causes since it began seven years ago. In the past month alone, donations totalling over £6,000 have been made, from fundraising activities at the market, stallholder fees and a sponsored walk: • £1,978 to Kingston Carers’ Network for the young carers’ Christmas trip • £1,500 to YMCA London South West towards a theatre company project • £1,000 to Refugee Action Kingston supporting refugees and asylum seekers • £727 to the Joel Community Services Night Shelter for its vegetable garden • £408 for Balance CIC’s work with disabled and vulnerable people in the borough, to buy chickens and install a coop at the Stud Nursery • £400 to the Shooting Star Chase hospice to support Grandparents' Day Commenting on funding for the Balance CIC project, Nicola Brookes - Community Activities and Transport Service Manager at Balance CIC - said: ‘Thanks so much to Surbiton Famers’ Market for their donation. The money is allowing us to run our next project, a new writing festival where we will perform short plays written by residents and community members. The money makes a real difference, allowing us to continue our work, and means a lot as it’s coming from another local group.’ Each month, the market includes a local Charity of the Month among its 26 stalls of fresh farm produce and speciality foods. Joining the Christmas Market on Saturday December 17 (9am to 1pm) was Momentum, which supports children with cancer and life-limiting conditions, and their families, in Surrey and south west London. The popular Christmas market had seasonal specialities, foodie gifts, mulled wine, a hog roast and much more. Christmas music was provided by The Kingstones and shoppers could have joined a flash choir singing carols. There was a free prize draw to win a fabulous hamper of Christmas market goodies to take away. Santa was paying a visit too. Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. What Causes Eating Disorders? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/ hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. Types of Eating Disorder Anorexia Nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible

via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BED) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis. Diagnosis and Treatment Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out. • Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals. • Claim they’re fat when they’re a healthy weight/ underweight.

• Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour. • Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family. • Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Lock Up Your Stuff! It seems that there’s a new hack every couple of days, with websites admitting that hackers have managed to get people’s account details. That’s dangerous, because many people use the same passwords on every site - so if somebody manages to get your login details for one website, they might be able to get into your email and favourite online shops. The good news is that protecting yourself is simple. First of all, don’t use the same user name and password twice. And secondly, don’t use easy to guess passwords. “12345678” is one of the UK’s most popular passwords and easy to guess, but something like “ektg-243n-brb456” isn’t. That’s hard to remember, of course, but you don’t have to remember it: on Apple hardware the Safari web browser can remember your passwords for you, and on other devices, apps such as the excellent LastPass or 1Password do the same.

Tips and tricks to make your life easier, from washable nail polish to a booster seat that can fit in a school bag. Monday morning panics 8-8.30am is often a rather stressful period in my house. Arguments over brushing teeth (my son) compete with tears over forgotten homework (my daughter). One thing I do have sorted is making it easy for them to find their uniform so they can get dressed. I use a rubber band to attach two clothes hangers together, one of which is the type with clips. Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and yours). If (like me) you’re hopeless at

remembering to remove your child’s nail varnish on a Sunday evening, you might want to try Nailmatic Kids Nail Polish. Not only is it toxin-free and available in several childfriendly shades, but it can be washed off with warm soapy water. Powder-pink glitter is a favourite in my house, although my son prefers Rio Green. £6.95, www.cuckooland.com. Days out From emergency wees in the park to dropped dummies, children just attract germs. Hand sanitising gels are handy but not always that child-friendly. Aquaint, on the other hand, is 100% natural and formulated without strong chemicals, preservatives or alcohol. It kills 99.9% of bacteria, but is completely safe, so can be used on everything from hands to drinks bottles. £2.49 - £4.99 from Boots, Mothercare and other retailers. Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing on name tags, try Tinyme labels.
