Hello Readers
A
s I write this editorial, the weather has taken a downturn, to say the least! Last week it was sunny, now it is more like March. Here’s hoping for an improvement by the time you are reading this. With this being a combined July/August issue of A Berrylands Companion, I have included double features for some of our usual content, for your holiday reading. The next issue will be for September, so I am looking for more new advertisers. Do you have a business locally? How do you promote it? Do you have leaflets printed and distributed each month? Whilst leaflets can be delivered with this magazine, were you aware that a year’s advertising package might save you money in the long run? And you would have a regular, constant appearance in an established magazine. Call me to find out more!
finals held as I was finalising the layout. It all sounded nailbiting!! There is an introduction to a Surbiton family phenomenon, the Williamsons, who have set up ‘What Dad Cooked’. They have given us an insight into their business, and I am hoping that in future issues they might send in some of Dad’s recipes, so we can all try out his ideas. If you are going away for your holiday, or even having a staycation, have a lovely time. We can all wish for the weather to improve and for the sun to shine down on us all. See you in September!
Best wishes, Karen

Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet – H.P. Wood In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over. The Last of Us – Rob Ewing On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heartwrenching story.

Holiday Reads For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend. Dear Amy – Helen Callaghan When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters. Woman on the Edge of Time – Marge Piercy It’s been four decades since the release of this classic feminist dystopian novel, yet the writing still feels just as original and relevant. Wife and mother Connie Ramos has been branded as mentally unstable and now lives alone, ostracised by most of society. She starts escaping to a future, happier time – where equality is accepted as the norm. But Connie is also shown an alternative future, where women are little more than commodities. Which one becomes reality may be down to Connie herself. If you’ve never read it, or worse, were made to analyse it for an English Literature class, now
is the time to pick up the 40th anniversary edition. Fishbowl – Bradley Somer All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shutin’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining. Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All – Jonas Jonasson After three stints in prison for murder, Hitman Anders decides to go straight. Well, less crooked anyway. An unlikely alliance between the hitman, a lapsed priest and a hotel receptionist see the trio embark on a trek across Sweden, lying, cheating and swindling as they go. A great novel to escape into for fans of dark humour, it’s possibly best suited to villa holidays, or other locations where holidaymakers won’t get annoyed at your snorts of laughter.

Melnikova claimed her third ITF Pro Circuit tile with a win over experienced Frenchwoman Stephanie Foretz 63 76(6). In a match delayed due to rain, the Russian managed to maintain her composure and even bring some sunshine to the court in a bright yellow top, following the final she said: 16
Unfortunately the men were not as fortunate with the weather and in the men's final both players were forced to deal with a change of surface when rain forced the conclusion of the match indoors with Lu leading 5-4 in the first set. Lu managed to come through an epic tie-break in the second set to take the victory in straight sets 75 76(11). The win sees Lu extend his lead at the top the Challenger titles list to 23 and provides consolation for his defeat to doubles partner Dustin Brown in the final of the previous week's Aegon Manchester Trophy. On winning the title Lu said: "I'm very happy, especially last week to make the final and this week to come here with the different conditions but still focus on the match and fighting the matches one by one."
Marina Melnikova in action "I was very nervous today compared to other matches because it was the final but I’m so happy to win. I think it was interesting for people to watch, I was very excited to play and we were waiting so long. I’m just so happy that I did it." "I think I was a little bit more aggressive today, I was trying to put her under pressure and I was probably moving a bit better than Steph. I was just trying to think about the next point because you need to have useful thoughts, because if you think if I win this point I will win the match then I will win the tournament, you’ll go crazy. I just thought if I win this point I win this tiebreak, it didn’t matter if it was first set or third set, it was just a tiebreak. Just playing point by point." Foretz was philosophical in defeat, she said: "I'm a little bit tired but I won this week and played some tough matches, close ones. Today she was better, she played better, I was close to coming back in the second set and had my chances, but didn’t take them. It was a great week, we got to play all the matches on grass which was perfect. The weather was tough and we played outside, I hope I will continue like this next week."
6
Yen-Hsun Lu with trophy "I’m feeling very good on the grass, I’m playing well and going for my shots and with my serve it helps a lot on grass but I was a little bit unlucky today. We started really well in Surbiton on my serve he made only 2 points and I had lots of break points there, maybe there it would have been different." The Romanian would have his chance to revenge his defeat sooner rather than later, after he was drawn to play Lu once again in the first round of the Aegon Ilkley Trophy on the following Tuesday. olicitors firm Lewis & Dick with branches in Ewell and Crawley have raised an amazing £4,285 for charity by taking part in the Will Aid scheme where they wrote Wills for local people and asked them only to consider making a donation to charity.
This year’s Will Aid has been a great success with the total funds raised so far reaching an impressive £1.1M for the nine charities. Peter de Vena Franks, Campaign Director, is delighted with how solicitors and will makers have responded to the scheme. He said:
Laura Mead from Christian Aid paid the firm a visit last month to present them with a certificate to show their fantastic achievement and to let them know how the money they raised will be spent. She said:
“Over the years, the Will Aid campaign has made an amazing contribution to the work of the nine participating charities and this year was no exception. Thanks to the support and commitment of local solicitors that took part in this year’s Will Aid, many people both in the UK and abroad will receive life changing support from the nine wonderful charities. And local people who used the scheme have the peace of mind knowing their affairs are in order thanks to having a professionally drawn up Will.

“Christian Aid really appreciates the hard work and generosity of all at Lewis & Dick as well as the local people who came to make a will with Will Aid. The Will Aid scheme is really important to us not just because of the money raised through initial donations but also because Will Aid offers people the opportunity to leave a legacy gift. Legacies are hugely important to us and make a significant contribution to the work we do eradicating poverty and helping to change the systems and structures that keep people poor. A legacy of any size makes such a difference and helps to change lives all over the world.” James Winfield, Partner, and colleagues at Lewis & Dick wrote over 70 Wills during the month of November, generously giving their time for free for the whole month. Will Aid, now in its 27th year, is a charity scheme that raises money for nine charities: ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save The Children, Sightsavers, Age UK, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (Northern Ireland). The money raised is spent helping vulnerable people here in the UK and abroad.
I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the solicitors and will makers in this area and let them know that thanks to them, lives will change for the better and people who need it will continue to receive the help and support that the charities work so hard to provide.” Will Aid will run again in November 2016. Solicitors and anyone who wants to make a Will can find out more at the website www.willaid.org.uk
For more information, please visit: www.lewis-dick.co.uk James Winfield, james.winfield@lewis-dick.com, Tel: 020 8393 0055
As well as raising funds for the Will Aid charities, the scheme helps to ensure that people in this area have a professionally drawn up Will. A Will is a vital document for every adult no matter their age. Not only does it ensure that a person’s money and possessions are distributed as they wish but it means that they have a say in who looks after any children they may have if something should happen to them before those children reach 18.
443 Kingston Road, Ewell, Surrey KT19 0DG
James Winfield said of their achievement:
Press Office: contact Nerissa Shaw, nerissa@willaid. org.uk, Tel: 07545 951620
“Historically, Lewis and Dick has been a Christian law firm. We have always had those Christian principles at the heart of Lewis & Dick and the motivation to be charitable, but we view volunteering like this is a good way to fulfil some of our overall Corporate Social Responsibilities. We also take part in a range of other charitable activities, and will be taking part in Will Aid again next year!”

Why not join a local choir?
ver the past few years there has been an upsurge in interest in singing in choirs, thanks in part to Gareth Malone and the success of the Armed Forces wives’for choirs. As a result some new choirs have been started in our local area and others have been rejuvenated. Many are discovering about the benefits and pleasures of belonging to a choir.
century madrigal and Chattanooga Choo-Choo. In the Spring Term we always perform a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. In the past there have been a stern Mikado, lusty Pirates and ghostly apparitions from Ruddigore. This year we did The Gondoliers, a lively and comical piece with many familiar tunes, which was thoroughly enjoyed.
I joined the Malden Community choir in January and was warmly welcomed. The choir has singers of all abilities and there is no audition. Celia, the Choir Leader, makes the music achievable for all. We always remark on how relaxed and energised we feel after singing. It is also a great brain workout, learning new pieces, some in Italian. Choir items are not always big classical pieces. The Malden Community Choir has a varied programme throughout the year, for instance this term we are learning songs as diverse as a round, a 16th
As usual, as part of New Malden Festival, we will be repeating our performance on the evening of the 6th July at the Methodist Church in High Street, New Malden. Come along to see us and join in the fun. Tickets are available from the Malden Centre, Blagdon Road.

Individual Savings Accounts were first introduced in 1999. They provided exemption from income tax and capital gains tax, and quickly became a popular place to save and invest. Back then, it was a straightforward choice between a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares equivalent, but with seven different types of Individual Savings Account now available, making the right choice is much more complicated. So how do you know which ISA is best for you, and even whether you’re eligible to apply? We take a look at the different ISA accounts available, to identify which ones might suit your needs. Instant access cash Isa A straightforward tax-free savings account offered by banks and building societies - interest rates have fallen considerably in recent years, but it’s also a risk-free way to put your money to one side. You get instant access to your savings, and need to be at least 16 years of age to open this account. stocks and shares Isa Stocks and Shares ISAs are
12 12
open to anyone aged 18 or over. The money is divided between various investment products, including company shares, government and corporate bonds, and unit trusts. Although as an investment there’s greater risk with a Stocks and Shares ISA, you can control your exposure to it by splitting your annual allowance between this and a Cash ISA. JunIor Isa Parents can save for their children in a Junior ISA. It’s open to children under the age of 18, but the child can only open an account if they are aged 16 or over. The annual allowance currently stands at £4,080, but a child between the ages of 16 and 18 can also open an adult ISA, which boosts their saving capacity. help to Buy Isa A fairly recent addition to the ISA family, the Help to Buy ISA was introduced in December 2015 in an attempt to boost the first-time buyer market. For every £4 saved, the government has pledged to add a £1 bonus (up to a maximum of £3,000), making it a great way to save for a deposit on a first property. InherItance Isa To avoid having to pay tax on a deceased partner’s ISA savings, the Chancellor introduced the facility to inherit tax-free from December 2014. From the date of a spouse’s death, the surviving partner is granted an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) for the total
amount in the account, and has three years in which to use it. lIfetIme Isa The Lifetime ISA will be introduced from 2017, and is for people between the ages of 18 and 39. A 25% bonus from the government is available, so for every £4 saved they will put in £1 up to a maximum of £1,000. It can be used towards the purchase of a house up to the value of £450,000, otherwise you need to keep the money in the account until the age of 60 to avoid a penalty. InnovatIve fInance Isa This is seen to be a riskier choice for investors, but one that potentially brings higher returns. One of the risks is that your money won’t be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme because the banks are not involved. You place your money with peer-to-peer lending platforms, which could attract a higher rate of interest than with Cash or Stocks and Shares ISAs. At the time of writing, however, there are only eight such online lenders offering this type of ISA. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/saving/article-3505692/ The-seven-different-types-offerchoose-one-you.html http://www.moneywise. co.uk/banking-saving/savingsaccounts-isas/how-to-inherit-isa http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/mortgageshome/article3520497/From-new-LifetimeIsa-shared-ownership-banishtime-buyer-blues.html

Whether it’s your car, a friend’s, your company’s or even a hire car, when you’re the driver, it’s down to you to make sure your transport is legal. So, before driving off, consider conducting a “preflight check” prior to entering the vehicle and a “cockpit check” when in it. 16
A simple walk around the car, checking the bodywork and tyres is all that is required - it takes seconds but could save you time and trouble. Just prior to writing this piece, I noticed a parked car with an almost flat near-side
front tyre. If the driver of that car approaches the driver’s door directly and hops straight in, they would miss that flat tyre and probably only be aware of it when on the road, meaning they will need to do a risky roadside wheel change. Do you regularly check your lights? Making sure your lights work, and knowing how to check them, is now part of the driving test. It’s simple to do and could save you from missing something at night, or someone driving into the back of you. You’ll avoid getting points on your licence too. The same goes for a regular check of your wipers, and please don’t wait until they make the windscreen smeary to see through. Think what you might miss in the rain if your wipers aren’t up to the job. Perhaps a child crossing the road? A quick bi-weekly check on these items will make sure all is well.

Cake and Bake Chocolate Mousse Brownies
16
Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert!
Ingredients: BROWNIE BASE • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour
MOUSSE TOPPING • 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate
Makes 12 Ready in 1hour 30mins plus cooling and chilling
TIP
Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour.
18
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/Gas 4.
Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.
2. Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large
heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.
3. Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate
mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin.
4. To make the mousse topping, melt the milk
chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk.
5. Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl
until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

Let’s be optimistic and pray for a long hot summer. What gadgets can help your summer really sizzle? From making parties more entertaining to ensuring your barbecued food is full of flavour and not food poisoning, gadgets are here to help you make the most of every second of summer. One of the big trends this year is solar power - not because Britain has suddenly got sunnier, but because the combination of more efficient solar technology and low-power technology such as LED lights means solar gadgets work properly, even when it’s a bit dull. You’ll have seen endless solar lights and spotlights, but how about solar-powered water fountains, bird baths or other water features? You can spend from around £50 to several hundred pounds depending on how complex the feature is and what it’s made of: cheap ones tend to be made of resin, while natural stone takes you into the hundreds. Solar power is also very good for charging phones, which is handy if you’ve embraced streaming music and use your smartphone to play sounds in the garden. It pays to shop around: for example the PowerBee Executive charger, which has an RRP of £39.99,
20
is widely available for as little as £13.99. While you’re at it, you could buy yourself a solar powered wireless speaker too: the Gemtune Kinna speaker is £40, while the larger and longer range Jabadoo wireless outdoor solar speaker is £99. Even if you don’t go solar, a wireless speaker is an excellent investment for summertime sounds, as it means you don’t need to keep your music close to a power point. For many of us summer means outdoor cooking, and of course there are plenty of products designed just for us. The Looftlighter (£48) and BBQ Dragon (£46) use super-heated air to get your barbecue started quickly, while the iGrill Mini (£43) is a Bluetooth thermometer that tells your phone when your food is ready. If money’s no object, the SmartGrill offers voice control, recipe apps and notifications on your phone or tablet. The bad news: the smallest one is around £1,400 and the most expensive model, the 42-inch, is nearly £7,000. Gadgets aren’t just about grilling, and they don’t all require a second mortgage either. Automatic wine coolers cost from around £50 and can chill a bottle of white wine in less than 10 minutes, while
the lower-tech bottle wraps sit in the fridge until you need them, chill bottles in around 15 minutes and cost £9.99. Beer drinkers can join in too: the Xcellent Global Beer Chiller Chilling Sticks, stainless steel rods you freeze and then stick in your beer bottles, are £9.99 for two. The chillers work in some soft drink bottles too. We started off with optimism, but let’s add some realism too: the British weather being what it is, it’s a good idea to have early warning of incoming bad weather. An outdoor weather station provides just that, and you can choose from traditional clock designs with integrated barometers and thermometers from around £25 or go hightech with a wireless weather station, which can cost from around £25 to several hundred pounds depending on the features you want to have. Or you could always go on Amazon and buy the Amscan PPP GB Umbrella Hat, which offers the protection of an umbrella with the hands-free convenience of a hat for just £2.99. Beer of the Month WVM_A6ADVERT_2.indd 1
24/07/2015 14:02
It’s the fashion among ale-drinkers to while away a hot August afternoon with a golden ale – you know, one of those modern pale ales that’s so overburdened with exotic hops that all you can taste is nettles. But for those of us who still believe that sunny afternoons were made for cricket not rock festivals, I have a couple of beery suggestions that are still refreshing and still hoppy, but less abrasive and altogether more mellow. Although founded in 1777, Dorset’s Badger Brewery has become a trailblazer in the bottled beer market, with an innovative range that is unafraid of ingredients like liquorice, ginger, and elderflower; and the moment you uncap a bottle of 4.5% alcohol Golden Glory, you know what’s in it: peach blossom. So – a fruity beer for that summer sundowner? Why not? The Belgians use loads of fruit, and they’re (supposedly) the best brewers in the world. Golden Glory pours an attractive dark gold with a thick foamy head. The nose is heady with peach to the exclusion of all else; on the palate, though, the peach is less pronounced. There’s still an overtone, but the more traditional malt comes through strongly, and then in the finish there’s what there ought to be – hop bitterness. St Peter’s Brewery of Suffolk celebrates its 20th birthday this year but has loads of history behind it. Its home is a moated Tudor farmhouse deep in a maze of lanes, which was built with bits of architectural salvage from the nearby priory, including an entire church window of intricatelycarved tracery. A truly unique place, and well worth a visit. Its huge bottled range includes grapefruit beer, honey beer, a stout, a porter, an IPA and many others; but in August we’ll try the Organic Ale at 4.5% alcohol. The beer is a dark gold colour, and there’s a hint of biscuity malt offset by lemony hops in the aroma. The mouth feel is smooth and creamy, with a palate that balances rich toffee, an overtone of marmalade, and just a suggestion of barley wine that makes the beer drink above its weight. The finish is all hop, though, long and dry and bitter, making it the perfect quencher for all that fine August weather I hope we’ll be getting. By Ted Bruning

We are brothers (Pete and Leo Williamson) who present our Dad’s (Bill’s) family cooking via an online food blog. All the meals we show are the meals that Dad actually cooks for the family. We promote Dad’s regular recipes, cooking tips, cheats and kitchen secrets – collectively forming an inspirational food resource for aspiring home cooks. We also write monthly for the Time Out London Bloggers network.

We couldn’t bear to see Dad’s food not go beyond our own dining table. So we started to design a blog to showcase the family food. Last year Dad was also compiling a list of “how to” guides as a way to help our older brother learn how to cook for his own children; these were ideal to translate into on-line recipes, tips and cooking tricks. What have you found the most difficult: Time and Money. Time has always been our biggest barrier because we all have jobs. We couldn’t afford to gamble setting up a business without regular income. We started by using email to bound around ideas, catching moments usually during commuting. The first list of possible business ideas was emailed on a tain ride from London to Southampton.
Our aim is to promote understanding of ingredients, flavour, taste and depth in cooking and to show that amazing home cooking is an activity that everyone can take part in. What did you do before you set up 'What Dad Cooked' (WDC): Same as we do now. Dad runs a creative production company, Pete is an Architect and Leo is a digital designer. We’ve had to bend our skills to set up WDC. Pete focusses on Marketing, Leo built the website and runs social media, and Dad (as well as cooking) does all the food photography and writing too! Tell us about your Dad, Bill: Father of three and now Grandad to two. Dad’s incredibly creative in all fields, but actually quite a modest and quiet man. As kids he built us a tree-house, taught us to draw, paint, read and write music… and now the final challenge he’s still working on… teaching us how to cook! How did he get into cooking: Dad has always been a passionate home cook with a strong interest in cooking. He says it came from watching his mum fearlessly cook for four children. Dad was a typical weekend cook; but over the years work and family commitments changed and for while Mum had to stop cooking due to an operation to help her eye-sight, soon Dad now found himself cooking every meal and kind of got used to it. Where does he get his ideas from: Everywhere and anywhere. The ceiling is bowing with the weight of cook-books Dad owns. He’s inspired by great chefs, but also rustic street markets, his childhood, family food from other cultures and often just plain old experimenting. Dad’s obsessive in the kitchen… we once came home to find
22
Is it really hard work: Unbeliveably. The easier it looks, the harder it is. We are an eight month old family business and all our work is produced by just three working individuals using our actual family meals. All our spare time is dedicated to What Dad Cooked. It’s tough to keep up the momentum but when we see people enaging with Dad’s food it’s definitely worth it. What is the favourite recipe for each of you, including Dad For Pete it’s definitely Dad’s Artichoke Pappardelle, Leo likes the Asparagus Risotto and Dad is going for his Cuttlefish Paella which always reminds him of a holiday to Barcelona. Do you prefer sweet or savoury, east or west cuisine?: As you’ll see from the blog, Dad is a very eclectic cook and we love all foods. Mrs. WDC has Italian roots and a sweet tooth so when Dad wants to impress it’s probably Italian food with a sweet dessert. What news… We’re always looking for people to try Dad’s recipes, or show us what they’re up to in the kitchen. If you send us a picture of your meal we’ll be sure to post it on our social media. We’ll also be giving a talk at The Waterloo Food Festival on the 5th July titled “How to start a food blog”. Details on the ‘We Are Waterloo’ website. You can follow What Dad Cooked online at www.whatdadcooked.com. Or on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. @whatdadcooked

Health
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Growing Up, Not Growing Out: Childhood Obesity
Most parents would say their child’s health and life expectancy is vitally important. Yet nearly a third of all children in the UK are overweight or obese, potentially jeopardising their health and shortening their lifespan. Last year Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, warned that “[poor diets] and couch potato lifestyles are normalising obesity and as parents, a third of us can’t now spot when our own child is seriously overweight”. National Childhood Obesity Week, running from 4th-10th July, aims to raise awareness of this escalating problem. The Scale and Dangers of Childhood Obesity The 2014 Public Health Survey for England identified 31.2% of 2-15 year olds as overweight or obese. The 2014/15 National Child Measurement identified 19.1% of Year 6 children (aged 10-11) as obese and 14.2% as overweight, while 9.1% of Reception children (aged 45) were already obese, with another 12.8% overweight. ‘Puppy fat’ that children ‘grow out of’ is a potentially dangerous myth. Obese children often grow into obese adults, increasing their risk of developing insulin resistance, premature onset of diabetes and heart disease, cardiovascular disease,
disability, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis) and some cancers. Dr Sania Nishtar, Co-Chair of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, warns of obesity’s “impact on educational attainment” and “physical, psychological and health consequences”. Tackling the Problem • The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) provides data to help the government understand and tackle children’s weight issues and aims to engage with families about healthy lifestyles and weight issues. Trained healthcare professionals measure the height and weight of Reception and Year 6 children annually and calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI) centile. • Initiatives such as Change4Life provide straightforward information about healthy family lifestyles. • The Sugar Tax may be controversial, but government research shows that if we halved the sugar in soft drinks, average sugar consumption would decrease significantly, particularly in 10-19 year olds. Dropping the nation’s sugar intake to recommended levels within 10 years would avoid 4,000 early deaths and save the NHS £480 million a year. What Parents Can Do: • Give them the best start. Exclusively breastfeeding babies until 6 months significantly reduces their risk of obesity. • Reduce Their Sitting Time. Prolonged sitting damages

health, even in people who exercise regularly. Keep binge-watching sessions to a minimum and break them up with bursts of activity. • Increase Their Physical Activity. This needn’t be team sports or gym sessions. Walking or cycling to school (even part way), playground trips, countryside walks, gardening, kicking a football around, swimming, indoor snowboarding, playing tag or fitness videogames all provide great exercise. • Ensure They Get Enough Sleep. Lack of sleep can affect appetite-stimulating hormones, as well as negatively affecting memory, concentration, immunity and mental and physical health. • Improve Their Diet > Reduce sugar. Beware hidden sugars in sauces and cereals, cut out sugary drinks, and gradually wean them off adding sugar to cereals or drinks. > Provide Five a Day. Any form of fruit or vegetables will do, but ration juices, as these contain ‘free’ sugars just as sugary drinks do. > Keep Portion Sizes Small for younger children. > Monitor Pocket Money Spending to ensure it isn’t spent on junk food and sweets.
Finally, Set a Good Example. Spending your free time in front of the TV eating unhealthy snacks makes it hard to persuade your child that following suit could damage their health. For more information, visit: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ Childhealth6-15 http://www.nhs.uk/change4life

Secrets of a successful BBQ!
D
Alan Jennings gives us his professional advice
espite a very indifferent start to the holiday season I still cling to the idea that this year we shall enjoy something of a proper summer, when heat-wave days and nights make a BBQ with family and friends almost obligatory. Although BBQ cuisine can now be a precision art, much still depends on forward planning. So here are some of my advice for a really successful event. First of all, decide on the main meat for your BBQ. If you want your BBQ to be really memorable and stand out from all the rest, it could be your choice of beef, including our famed BBQ steaks. All our Scotch beef has been hung for three weeks to give you maximum flavour and tenderness. Whether you select Fillets, T-bones, Sirloins, Rib-Eyes, Rumps, Flat Irons or Skirt you’ll find the same mouth-watering quality across the board. And each can be cooked just the way each guest wants it. Next, don’t let’s forget all the mainstays of the British BBQ. As well as steaks, there are so many great choices for you. Chicken legs and drumsticks and beef burgers always go down well, and there’s sausages, of course. All our sausages - like our beef burgers - are hand-made by us on our own premises from prime meats. Do you want to be ‘with it?’ This year more and more of our customers are going for a single-joint BBQ. This can be a sizeable
26
piece of beef such as a picanha rump, or a butterflied leg of lamb, or even a rack of pork king ribs. And with just the one joint to see to, you avoid all the problems of different meats and different cooking times. For the more adventurous who have invested in a smoker the flavours created when slow cooking a shoulder of pork or beef brisket will be the envy of all the neighbours! As an idea, a special feature of your BBQ might be a selection of sausages. Here at Jennings we have many popular varieties, from Traditional Pork to Spicy Spanish and French Merguez. All are amazingly tasty and well-suited to BBQ treatment. For an extra dimension of taste, marinated BBQ meats are increasingly popular with our customers. Whatever meats you want, we can supply them ready-marinated for you. And you get to choose from our big range of marinades. Always remember - it’s the meat that makes the BBQ really top-notch, and we can always advise you if you need any help in making your choice. All at Jennings would like to wish you a warm and sultry July and August, with plenty of BBQ opportunities for everyone! Salmon and Broccoli Quiche Serves 6
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad.
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 300g salmon fillets
Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5.
• 200g small broccoli florets • 4 large eggs • 250ml double cream • 100ml milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender.
• 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
TIP Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture.
28
Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5
Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Water, Water Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood
W
ith summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a goodlooking and productive garden? If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on. It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before
30
the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds. In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now. Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative, always water in the evening or
extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage. Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood
A
lthough gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year. Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October. Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do well in containers, so if you have
32
a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering. Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness
or patches of bluish mould. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety. For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space. Living Rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches as well as
34
cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and cupboards below, or run a long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks. Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted
pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fitted-furniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements from DIY shops or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s Rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys. Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints. Image - Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

Modern carpet can be both practical and fashionable, offering an enormous choice of colour, pattern and texture. WHY CHOOSe CaRPeT? Carpet is soft and comfortable underfoot, absorbs sound, is non-slip and forgiving if you have a fall, and is insulating against heat loss and draughts; however, it may stain and wear. Regular vacuuming is the only maintenance carpet needs, but accidental spills can be hard to deal with, and it’s unlikely to last longer than stone, tiles or wood. CHOOSINg a CaRPeT As a general rule, the deeper the pile and the more luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet will need, while the shorter and denser the pile, the better it is likely to wear, meaning there is a tradeoff between softness and comfort against durability
38
and resilience. Standard carpet descriptions are for light, moderate, general, heavy and extra heavy domestic use, which gives a good indication of suitability. So a hallway carpet should be very tough and classified for heavy domestic use, while a living room (general domestic) probably requires a luxury look combined with robust performance, and a spare bedroom could be more delicate. If you choose a carpet suitable for general use, you can lay it throughout to create a seamless look that pulls a decorating scheme together. Carpets are inadvisable in kitchens and bathrooms. Ask your retailer for samples and take them home where you can see them in your own environment and light. If redecorating from floor to ceiling, choose the carpet first and ensure that the rest of the scheme co-ordinates - the floor is the largest visible area in a room, so it’s important to get it right. Don’t forget the cost of underlay and fitting and get your room professionally measured, and when replacing a carpet, always buy new underlay. This ensures your new carpet sits properly and wears evenly and can prolong its life by up to 40 per cent. CaRPeT FIBReS Wool: Flame-retardant and compression resilient, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not soil easily. The best wools come from Britain and New Zealand. Nylon: Extremely hard-wearing with the greatest abrasion resistance. It takes dye and stainresistance treatments well. Polypropylene: Resistant to stains and abrasions, wears well and is value-for-money. Used mainly in plain twists, loop patterns and saxonies. Polyester: Stain-resistant, light and bulky, with a lustrous appearance, mainly used in plain, thick saxonies. mixes: In order to enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, the four fibres are blended together. The most common blends are 80% wool with 20% nylon (probably the ideal combination of softness and strength); 80% wool with 10% nylon and 10% polyester; and 50% wool with 50% polypropylene.
CaRPeT PILe Loop: Pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or are like natural flooring such as sisal and coir. Avoid if you have pets. Cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a very low pile. Saxony: A deeper pile with a soft feel and appearance. Shag: Extra-long pile. Twist: A loop pile that uses yarn with a higher twist than usual to give a coarse, rugged surface. Velvet: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish.

“Don’t the goldfish mind?” queried Richard.

“No,” Richard lied. “Mum asked me to pop round to see if you’ve watered her Busy Lizzies.” Though the sight of the drooping bedding plants had already answered that question for him. “Do you want me to ask what you’re doing?” Richard asked. ”Or is it better if I don’t know?” “I don’t mind telling you,” Tony said, “so long as you don’t spoil the surprise for your mum.” “The surprise that you’ve filled your dustbin with water and then climbed in it?” Richard asked. “No longer a dustbin, Dickie,” Tony said proudly. “What you have here is a fully functioning hot tub. I wanted to surprise your mum when she got back from her spa weekend.” “She’ll certainly be surprised,” Richard agreed. “She can sit in here of an evening and put her white wine spritzer and pickled onions on the open lid.” Tony tapped the lid behind him where an empty pickled onion jar was rolling around. “These things go for megabucks.” “Why’s it bubbling like that?” Richard asked, studying the dark water more closely. “I borrowed the pump out of

“They’ll be alright for a bit,” Tony said. “And how are you heating the water?” Richard asked. “You what?” Tony said. “It’s a hot tub, so how are you making it hot?” “No, it doesn’t want to be hot,” Tony scratched his ear with the pickled onion fork, “it’s for when you’re too hot, you know, to cool you down a bit.” “So you’ve filled the dustbin with cold water, stuck the fish tank pump in there and climbed in,” Richard said as calmly as possible. “Pleasant is it?” “It’s not bad.” Tony’s teeth rattled slightly. “I could stay in here all day.” “Surely you’d start to prune after a bit?” Richard noticed his dad’s finger tips. “How long have you been in there exactly?” “Not long,” Tony said defensively, “I’ll get out when you’ve gone. Probably could do with a spot of lunch, now that I’ve eaten all the pickled onions.” “Why not get out now?” Richard said, then a horrible thought flashed through his mind. “You’re not naked in there are you?” “No!” Tony batted the suggestion away. “I’ve got my best undercrackers on.”
“So get out then,” Richard said. “Like I said,” Tony looked uncomfortable, “in a bit.” “You can’t get out,” Richard grinned, “can you?” “I did have a try earlier,” Tony said. “I’ll have another go in a bit.” “Do you want some help?” “No, I’m fine.” “You’re stuck aren’t you?” “Well, maybe just a little bit.” Richard walked around the dustbin assessing the situation. “Hang on, Dad.” He took a firm hold of the back of the bin and tipped. “It’ll be easier if we release some of the water first.” The water sploshed gently over the side, wetting Richard’s feet. “Careful Dickie,” Tony said nervously, “there are quite a few gallons in here.” Just then the sheer weight overwhelmed Richard and the whole bin tipped over. Tony was thrown out onto the patio like the contents of a trawler net. “At least we’ve watered the Busy Lizzies,” Richard said. “You alright?” “Never better.” Tony picked himself up. “Is there time to refill it before your mum gets back?” By Jackie Brewster

The Queen presents the 1966 World Cup to England Captain, Bobby Moore
Absolutely no prizes for guessing which glorious golden anniversary we’re celebrating this month. What, you need a clue? Some people are on the pitch – they think it’s all over – it is now! Yes, of course you knew... 30th July 1966 was undoubtedly the greatest day in our sporting history, when more than 30 million people worldwide saw England beat Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup for the first and only time. So far. The story of the game, and especially of England’s disputed third goal, is too well-known to go into here. But a campaign launched by the Daily Mirror in January this year to mark the anniversary by knighting all the surviving members of the team (except hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst, who is a knight already) stirs the dusty memory of an investiture conducted by the Queen 16 years ago. Somehow, in the immediate aftermath of the game, the Charlton brothers Bobby (OBE 1969, knighthood ‘94) and Jackie (OBE ‘74), goal-scorers Hurst (MBE ’75, knighthood ‘98) and Martin Peters (MBE ‘78), captain Bobby Moore (OBE ‘67), and goalkeeper Gordon Banks (OBE ‘70) captured all
42
the attention and all the gongs. Only after Hurst was knighted did the press, fans, and fellow players get behind a campaign to honour the rest of the team. So it was that on 7th March 2000 the “forgotten five”, as they were nicknamed, turned up at Buck House to receive the MBEs they’d been awarded in the New Year’s honours. Full-backs Roger Hunt and Ray Wilson, midfielders Alan Ball and Nobby Stiles (both of whom, unusually for midfielders of the time, were only 5’ 6”), and striker George Cohen had all made vast contributions, not just to victory in the final but also to the campaign leading up to it, which were at long last being acknowledged and rewarded. But what became of those lesser-known lions after Nobby Stiles’s famous post-match victory dance, dentures in one hand and Jules Rimet trophy in the other? Of the five only the youngest, Alan Ball (21 at the time), went on to enjoy what you might call a stellar playing career; not because he was a better player than the others but because only his career extended into the era when footballers became media celebrities. He scored 187 goals in 833 club games spanning 23 years and represented England in the 1970 and ‘74 World Cups. His top-flight career included 72 caps (six as captain) and lengthy spells at Blackpool, Everton (League Champions 1969-70), Arsenal and Southampton. His 15 years in management were less successful and he retired in
1999, dying in 2007 of a sudden heart attack. Of the others, Hunt was arguably the most successful, scoring 286 goals for Liverpool (one of them, against Arsenal in August 1964, being the first ever shown on Match of the Day), 24 for Bolton, and 18 for England. After retiring from football in 1972 he went into the haulage business. Fellow full back Wilson made over 400 club appearances in 20 years, for Huddersfield, Everton, Oldham and Bradford, before quitting football to become an undertaker. Cohen was a Fulham stalwart for 13 years and earned 30 England caps; he was forced into retirement by injury in 1969 and enjoyed a successful career as a coach at his old club. Stiles’s career followed a similar path: after 11 years at Manchester United he spent two seasons at Middlesbrough and then two at Preston under his old teammate Bobby Charlton. His playing career was also ended by injury and he also returned to his old club as youth coach where he trained, amongst others, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, and the Neville brothers.
In honour of the above, this month’s birthday boys are all ex-international footballers.
Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Enrico Annoni (1st), Minas Hantzidis (4th), Gianfranco Zola (5th), Owen Coyle (14th), and Martin Keown (24th).

by Tom Hughes Follow Tom on Twitter @groomsdaybook After working so hard on her GCSEs, Hannah deserved a reward. A slap up meal with some of her mates perhaps? I decided to consult Sarah for guidance. The look on her face told me that my reasoning was completely off beam. How had I managed to stagger through to my early middle years without exposure to that most terrible of transatlantic imports - The Prom? “Tom, it’s a very important milestone in a girl’s life.” “Yes but she didn’t go to Rydell High and her name’s not Sandra Dee.” “Don’t be silly, now jump in, we’re off to chose the dress.” “I can’t believe my opinion is of any value.” “It isn’t, but you’re paying.” Unconvinced, I eased the Mondeo into town. Eventually we arrived outside a compact boutique catering for tastes that were distinctly sophomoric. Upon entering I was immediately overwhelmed by chiffon and silk. Gingerly I fingered a price tag. The figures swam before my eyes. I was approached by a formidable woman sporting sparkly spectacles secured around her neck by means of a gold chain. Concerned that she might have seen me balk at

the price and afraid of appearing a miser I said, “This one looks lovely. That’s my daughter over there; will you have it in her size?” The woman flipped on her specs and gawped at the Apple Of My Eye, then at the dress. “Yes we have her size. Which school is she at?” “Rydell - sorry, Rainford High.”
we are from lowly stock but my Uncle Henry is on first name terms with the Headmaster so I’m sure if he put in a good word…” “Tom, it’s got nothing to do with that. It’s so girls from the same school don’t turn up in the same dress. Now, the shoes. Hannah, go and show him your shoes.”
The smartly dressed lady motioned for me to follow her to the desk where she licked her finger and then ran it firmly down a list. Snapping off her gigs she looked me in the eye and without hesitation said, “No.”
Hannah disappeared and, after a pause, tottered back into view wearing a strange pair of glittering stilts.
“No what?” I asked.
“Where’s this prom being held? Billy Smart’s Circus? And how on earth are you supposed to walk in those?”
“No. You cannot buy that dress for your daughter.” “Why not?” “Because of the school she goes to.” I felt my hackles rise. “Madam, I cannot believe that in this day and age, what school you attended is any impediment to free choice. Why am I being discriminated against?” At this point Sarah intervened. “Tom we’ve found the dress. Here, look.” And then from behind a curtain appeared Hannah - a vision of blossoming beauty. I turned to the proprietress. “Now Madam, I know
“Now Tom, aren’t they gorgeous!”
My nemesis with the glittering glasses interjected, “Oh, they’re not for walking in sir, they are what is known as a dinner shoe.”
Dinner shoe? Nonplussed, I decided to press on. “I see, so how much would a pair in which you can actually put one foot in front of the other cost?” “Oh, they would be much cheaper.” It was at this point that I felt my grip on reality slipping away. “Look Tom, let’s just pay and I can

talk you through it all later.” Gently, Sarah extracted the wallet from my jacket and helped me over to the card terminal. Safely home (after a lie down) I was offered a restorative cup of tea (two sugars). “Right, that’s the Prom Dress sorted. Now we just have to sort out her After Prom dress.” I jumped up and ran behind the sofa. From the safety of my temporary redoubt I said, “I don’t have to go back there again do I?” “No Tom, relax, we’ll sort that out.” “And then is that it?” “Yes. Apart from the After Prom party.” “Now I’ve heard of them, is that where a load of giggly drunk teenagers descend on some poor parents house and trash it?”

Heritage in Palermo By Solange Hando
16
Lapped by the blue Tyrrhenian Sea, framed by mountains rising over 1,000 metres, Palermo is the bustling capital of the autonomous region of Sicily. Attracted by the natural harbour and strategic location, myriad civilisations landed on these shores and on its solitary headland, the iconic Mount Pellegrino has seen them all: Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish to name just a few, all leaving their mark on a city which became one of the richest on the Mediterranean. Today Palermo remains an enticing mix of old and new, tree-lined avenues festooned in hibiscus and oleander, traditional street markets, hidden courtyards and breezy squares and narrow twisting lanes where laundry flaps on the balconies. The air smells of oranges and lemons and freshly-baked pizza, church bells mingle with the hooting of scooters and tuk-tuks and pony and traps rattle side by side. Bursting with colour, Palermo is above all a city of palaces, theatres and churches, contributing to Sicily’s generous share of UNESCO sites. In a capital once protected by four patron saints, the most venerated today is Saint Rosalia, who freed the people from the plague. Churches
46
pop up around every corner: austere or ornate, Norman, Renaissance, Baroque and more, but most endearing are the hidden chapels in the Vucciria neighbourhood, their gleaming interiors entirely covered in white stucco angels. Yet top of the list must be the Cathedral founded in the 12th century, boasting a magnificent doorway and royal tombs, a stunning Treasury and a rooftop walk, up 107 spiral steps but worth the effort for the panoramic view of the city bristling with domes, the sea and the surrounding hills. Meanwhile, far below, visitors head for Piazza Verdi to pose on the steps of the Teatro Massimo and gaze at its refined neo-classical façade flanked by two bronze lions. Dating back to the late19th century, it’s the third largest Opera House in Europe, justly renowned for its acoustics, and the place where the final scenes of the Godfather Part III were filmed in 1990. Stroll along the road and you come to another architectural gem, the Politeama Garibaldi Theatre; unlike Teatro Massimo, this was built for the common people who preferred operetta, plays, equestrian shows and the circus. Yet one of the theatre’s greatest
moments was the performance of Puccini’s opera La Bohème in 1896, applauded by a near delirious audience after a disappointing reception in Turin. Now home to the Sicilian Foundation Symphonic Orchestra, it dazzles visitors with its grand entrance and superb decorations, while on some guided tours you might see the original painted stage curtain weighing 450 kilos. As for Palermo’s palaces, most exotic are the Zisa and Cuba in Arabic style, set in the former pleasure grounds of the Norman kings, but most impressive is the Norman Palace, currently the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Following the Norman Conquest in 1072, the Arabic fortress was transformed into a sumptuous palace for the new Kings of Sicily, and as such is said to be the oldest royal residence in Europe. Beyond the 17th century façade, highlights include the splendid Ruggero Hall, named after Sicily’s first Norman King, and the 12th century Palatine Chapel. With its Norman architecture, its wooden ceiling in traditional Islamic style and its glittering Byzantine mosaics and dome, it exemplifies the rich blend of cultures which have shaped Palermo for over 1,000 years.

Will your dog take the plunge? Although swimming is one of the best exercises for your dog, as well as being a fun activity, not all dogs take well to swimming, and some are literally unable to swim due to their physiology. The short muzzle on bulldogs and pugs, for example, makes it very difficult to keep their nose and mouth above water and they are forced to take on an almost vertical position in order to stay afloat. Other breeds such as Labradors take to the water with a little too much enthusiasm at times, and it can seem impossible to get them out. Encouraging your dog to swim But if you have a reluctant swimmer on your hands, how can you persuade them to take the plunge?
PETS
•
Choose a warm day, and calm water with no waves or currents.
•
Try to find a gentle slope down into the water, so your dog doesn’t fall in unexpectedly.
•
Make sure they know how to get back out again, to avoid panic.
•
Take some new or favourite floating toys, plus treats for when they come out.
If you can paddle alongside your dog, they’ll find it comforting at first, and of course plenty of treats will help. Although good exercise for your dog, swimming is also meant to be fun, so if they don’t take to it quite as enthusiastically as you’d hoped, it might be advisable to stay in the shallows and just let them paddle. http://talentedanimals.com/blog/helping-yourdog-learn-to-love-to-swim/ By Ann Haldon

Cat owners in Epsom and surrounding areas are being encouraged to keep their pets safe this summer by having their feline friend microchipped. T h o u g h m i c r o c h ip p i n g is a safe and permanent means of identification which increases the chances of a missing cat being reunited with its owner, nearly half of the UK’s owned cats are not microchipped.1 Pamela Green, Volunteer PR & Comms officer said: “I cannot stress how important it is that cats are microchipped. It would give cat owners more peace of mind and enhance our ability to reunite missing cats with their owners.” “Currently when a cat comes into our care, the first thing we do is look for some sort of identification, including scanning for a ‘chip. In a lot of cases there is no microchip so we have to trawl lost and found registers and advertise the cat as missing. It’s a very time consuming process with no guarantee that we will ever locate the owner, despite our best efforts. Microchipping can be carried out by a vet or suitably trained individual and involves a small data chip being inserted under the cat’s skin between the shoulder blades. The details are then stored on a national database and can be accessed by scanning the animal with a special device. Most vets and rescue centres will routinely scan all lost cats and can use the information to quickly reunite the missing pet with their owner. However, it is important for owners to keep their records on the national database up to date – for example, if they move home or change phone number. Epsom, Ewell & District Branch were recently able to reunite beautiful Burmese Buster with his owners
48
Our lost & found officer took a call from an elderly lady in Chessington who reported that a loud brown cat had been hanging around for a few days and no one seemed to own it. She thought it could be a brown Burmese. So our officer arranged to go over the following day and a quick search on the internet revealed that a brown Burmese was missing from Surbiton. When she arrived at the lady’s house she saw at once that the cat was indeed a Brown Burmese, and when she called the name of the missing cat he responded. With the help of some M&S chicken she was able to quickly scan him! Luckily he was chipped and a quick call to Petlog confirmed he was indeed Buster the missing Burmese from Surbiton. Within 10 minutes of calling, his delighted owners arrived and Buster was safely secured in his basket and taken home. He had been missing for 5 days and his owners were understandably frantic. He was a delightful cat and the elderly lady who called us did a magnificent job looking after him. Buster was at least 4 miles from home - he could not have got there on his own. The owners said he would have had to cross the A3. He must have got into a vehicle by accident or worse someone had deliberately taken him. Thanks to the caring elderly lady and the wonders of modern technology Busters’ story had a happy ending. To ensure all stories like this end well please please get your cat microchipped. What To Consider When Hiring A Dog-Walker If you work full-time or simply need help to exercise your dog occasionally, you’ll need to look for a professional dog-walker. But how do you know that your beloved pet will be in safe hands? Here are a few things to consider: • Will your dog be walked by the same person each time? • Pet business insurance is a legal requirement for professional dog-walkers. • Will the walker need access to your home? If so, you’ll probably want to ask them for references. • They should also know how to administer first aid to the dogs if required. It’s also worth considering that if your dog has only ever experienced walks on its own with you, going out with other dogs could be threatening or

upsetting. Pet business insurance It is imperative that your dog-walker has business liability insurance to cover any damage caused by your dog when they are out, or conversely, anything that happens to your pet. This is actually a legal requirement for any pet business, and should cover damage to property as well as care of the animal. If you are out at work and the dog-walker has access to the house, their insurance should also cover the loss or theft of your keys. It is a good idea to go out with your dog and a potential new walker if possible, if only to give you peace of mind that your pet will be in good hands. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/05/2015/advice/ petplan-checklist/what-questions-should-i-askmy-dog-walker-insurance-credentials-safetyand-more/

Beauty Summer Lovin’ by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk
It’s been a very long time coming, but summer is finally here. I’ve dusted off the sunnies and dug out my sandals, but couldn’t resist investing in a few new goodies… A new lip gloss is always on my summer shopping list. This year I’ve gone for Neal’s Yard’s organic Lip Gloss in Fig, £9.50. It’s rich in seed and fruit oils, so nourishes lips while giving them a decent burst of colour. It’s easy to apply and also has a subtle orange flavour and scent. Being a gloss, the colour doesn’t last that long, but it does leave my lips feeling moisturised. Next on my list is a new makeup palette. I like one that I can keep in my bag then whip out when there’s talk of cocktails. Marks and Spencer’s Autograph Face Palette ticks all the boxes. There are nine eyeshadows, two blushers and four highlighters, so it can take my look from day to night with ease. What’s more, it’s housed in a cute metallic clutch bag, which you can detach from the palette and use on its own. A bargain at just £15. Now I am not normally a fan of nettles. I seem to be forever getting stung by them when retrieving a football out of the long grass or trailing after my dog through the woods. But they do have some good qualities. Nettles are packed with amino acids and proteins, so can help to strengthen your hair. You can make an effective hair rinse by steeping leaves in
50
hot water, but if that sounds like a bit too much effort, try Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System. This three-step hair care range uses nettles and other botanical ingredients to strengthen hair, add shine and prevent sun damage. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and am suitably impressed. I am incredibly lazy when it comes to body lotion, so don’t tend to use it as much as I should when I’m covered up in the winter. So once summer hits, my legs are a bit of a sorry sight. I’ve been tackling them with daily exfoliation, followed by Believa’s Natural Intensiv Body Lotion, £23.99. It’s packed with argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba and shea butter, so is incredibly moisturising. Thankfully it’s also easily absorbed, as I’m usually running late for the school run. Natural Intensiv is very gentle, so is suitable for allergy sufferers, and may help with eczema and other dry skin complaints. British fragrance house Atkinsons is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To celebrate, and mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year, it has launched a new perfume, Oud Save the Queen. Inspired by the Orient, this fragrance is bursting with spicy, exotic notes, including bergamot, jasmine, orange blossom and, of course, oud. However, there are also notes of the quintessentially British Earl Grey tea. This fragrance is on my wish list, rather than shopping list, unfortunately, as it’s an eye watering £150.

To Dye Or Not To Dye? by Kate McLelland
It’s a dilemma faced by most people of ‘a certain age’: let your hair go grey, or reach for the dye bottle?
as Rihanna and Zayn Malik are now sporting faux grey styles as part of a growing fashion trend.
Why We go grey Our natural hair colour comes from a pigment known as melanin, produced by the hair follicles. As we age the follicles produce less melanin and this means our hair effectively loses its colour. The average person will spot their first grey hair in their 30s and most people will have noticeable grey strands by their 40s. By the age of fifty, fifty per cent of people will have gone grey.
Why more of us are refusIng to dye It’s ironic that as young celebrities and their fans adopt grey hair as a fashion statement, an increasing number of older people are choosing not to use hair colourants. While there is no single cause for this trend, there are several reasons why the number of cheerleaders for being ‘grey and proud’ may be on the rise.
The thickness of hair also alters as you age because the size of your hair follicles shrinks, producing smaller hairs. In the same way the oil glands in the human scalp shrink with age, resulting in brittleness and dryness. grey Is the neW black If you are female, you may feel under greater pressure to keep up a youthful appearance. While women are often described as being ‘brave’ for going grey, men of the same age are given the flattering label of ‘silver fox’. But this situation may be about to change, as hip, young fashion icons such
Is hair dye harmful? Scare stories about the dangers posed by certain chemicals have continued to surface, despite a major re-think by manufacturers in the 1980s, when research revealed that substances used in hair dye at that time caused cancer in mice. Although no concrete evidence has yet been found to suggest that hair dyes are unsafe for regular personal use, the jury is still out on the risks faced by today’s consumers. Even that tiny seed of doubt may be enough to persuade some people to stop using colourants.

We can’t turn back the clock As we age, our skin colour alters, picking up more yellow tones. This means that the hair shade we had in our younger days may not blend with our current skin tone. Combine this with the effects of chemical overload on aging hair and it’s no wonder that many of us decide it’s better to let nature take its course. Role models lead the way These days we’re surrounded by high profile figures sporting grey hairstyles – think of male celebritiess such as Gary Lineker, José Mourinho and George Clooney and female high rollers like Anna Wintour, Meryl Streep and Christine Lagarde. Nowadays we are all living longer, in better health, and it may simply be that the trend towards accepting grey hair shows we are more relaxed about the aging process, living life to the full instead of hiding away. To quote celebrity hairstylist and founder of Twitter’s @ thegreyglammovement, Cynthia Alvarez: “Grey is the new black. The colour has taken on an entirely new life and meaning – today grey is beautiful, sexy, chic, fabulous!”

Beauty Beauty and the Beach by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk
Beauty buys to see you through those hazy summer days. When it comes to packing for holidays, I tend to fill every last millimetre of my case. So I do like products that save space and weight. Lush’s shampoo bars do both. Plus, as they’re solid bars, they can go in your hand luggage. There are a fair few to choose from, but my current favourite is Montalbano, £5.95, because of its fresh lemon scent. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not nearly as evangelical as I should be about applying suntan lotion, but I am trying to do better. The fact that every year more than 14,000 people in the UK develop a malignant melanoma is a pretty good motivator. As an extra incentive, UVA rays also lead to premature wrinkles and age spots, and they can penetrate skin even when it’s cloudy. So this summer, I’m slapping on the suntan lotion. I tend to use factor 25, but on days when I can get away with an SPF of 15, I usually reach for Green People’s Sun Lotion with Natural Tan Accelerator, £20. It’s a great choice if you have sensitive skin (which I do), as it’s very gentle, so unlikely to irritate. It’s also rich in seed oils, so leaves my skin feeling moisturised. The natural tan accelerator has been shown to increase tanning by up to 25% and can make a tan last much longer.
52
I admit it can be a bit of a faff rubbing in suntan lotion, so I’m rather tempted by Colorescience Sunforgettable. With an SPF of 50 it gives great protection, but as it’s a loose mineral powder, you just brush it on. You can wear it on top of makeup and it’s available in three shades – fair, medium and tan. For me, the price is the downside. At £41.50, it’s certainly not wallet-friendly. But it is supposed to last for ages, and avoiding the scratchy, sticky sand/ lotion mix might just make it worth the price, see www.beauty-productonline.co.uk. A day in the sun can leave skin feeling dry and dehydrated. I tend to use cocoa butter for putting the moisture back, but I am looking forward to trying Vichy’s new Ideal Soleil After Sun, £13. Key ingredients include shea oil and blackcurrant seed oil, so it’s rich in omega fatty acids, which can really help to boost hydration. What’s more, you can use it on dry skin or in the shower. I love treating my toenails to a professional gel polish, but if I don’t have time, I always have a few nail polishes at home to choose from. Crabtree and Eveyln’s Nail Lacquer in Wisteria, £6, is at the top of my shopping list. It’s just the right shade of blue to gives a good pop of colour, while being neutral enough to work with most outfits.

Biobags available through Kingston libraries Compostable bags for your food waste are now available at all seven libraries in Kingston. The Council will no longer be providing compostable bags for food waste containers. Instead, the council is trialling a new scheme selling 52 bags for £2 at local libraries. The cost-saving measure is in line with most local authorities in the country. Councillor Phil Doyle, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Waste at Kingston Council, said:
Food waste will still be collected every week. You don't need to buy compostable bags to recycle food waste - simply line your caddy with newspaper and rinse out frequently to keep odour at bay. Please don't use plastic bags. Did you know? Food waste is sent to a local facility where it is turned into compost. Gas produced through this process is turned into electricity. So, by recycling food waste you can help reduce the amount of material in your black wheelie bin and help the environment.
"Earlier in the year we introduced changes to the way your recycling is collected - reducing the number of recycling trucks on the road and providing new wheelie bins for paper, card and More advice on reducing your food waste can cardboard. Indications are that the changes be found at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com are working well, so a big thank you to our residents!" When It’s Time To Climb Out Of Your Empty Nest by Kate McLelland
“It wasn’t just that I missed him, it was feeling that I had moved into a different phase of life,” is how senior nurse Jane Berry sums up the double-whammy most parents face when seeing their children off to college or university for the first time. “Suddenly you are left staring at your partner over the breakfast table, thinking: where do we go from here?” Empty Nest Syndrome is not just about the emotions you experience when your child leaves home, it’s about confronting a milestone in your own life, too. So try to look at this period constructively, assessing your relationships, achievements and goals so you can plan for the future. Even the most positive parent is likely to feel sad for a while when children leave home, and it’s better for your mental wellbeing not to hide your feelings from partner, family and friends. But having an empty nest isn’t necessarily all about sadness and gloom: positives may include getting your bathroom back, being able to see your friends more often and spending less money on outings and leisure pursuits.
54
On the downside there are those inevitable concerns about how your child is managing: are they eating healthily? Having too many late nights? Getting into unsuitable relationships? It’s natural to be concerned, but if negative thoughts persist over time it may be advisable to seek advice from your GP. Here are a few dos and don’ts that can help you climb out of that empty nest: DO - invest time in relationships Spend time getting to know your partner again. Plan a holiday together or take a series of short breaks to places you wouldn’t normally go with the whole family. If you are single, this is a good time to sign up to a reputable online dating site and start building a new life for yourself. DO - find ways of filling the time Do something useful with all those hours you previously spent tidying, cleaning, shopping and caring. Use the time well instead of letting it slip away: join a choir, start blogging about your feelings or plan a life-changing trekking trip to the Himalayas.
DON’T - stalk your child on social media Social media makes it easier to keep in touch but you should avoid spending hours on Facebook or Instagram, checking on their every move. When you do speak, try to resist interrogating them or telling them how miserable you feel without them. DON’T - underestimate the impact on siblings When a child leaves home it changes the whole family dynamic, and that is often just as hard on the other children involved as it is for you. Encourage siblings to keep in touch with their absent brother or sister and plan some special activities you can all do together in the holidays. Like any grieving process, the key to recovery is giving yourself time to adapt. “It took longer than I expected,” admits Jane Berry. “But eventually we got used to his absence. Now it’s great to see him during the holidays, but by the end I can sense he’s counting the days till he can go back. In a way, we are, too – we still miss him but it feels right that he has an independent life.”

Hobbies ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’? Become A Wildlife Recorder! By Kate McLelland According to Dr John Blewitt, a specialist in Social Responsibility at Aston University in Birmingham, many of us are suffering from a new condition known as “nature deficit disorder”. Before you rush to google the symptoms, it may help to know that this isn’t a real medical condition, but a term coined to describe people who are cut off from the natural world. Research carried out by the charity Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) has revealed that a significant percentage of young adults aged between 16 and 23 are so divorced from nature they believe that eggs are made from wheat and don’t know that milk comes from a cow. In a timely intervention, Bristol Natural History Consortium, together with 14 partner organisations, has come up with a national initiative that promises to put us back in touch with the natural world. BioBlitz is a research programme that encourages ordinary people to become wildlife explorers for a day (find out more at www.bnhc. org.uk). However if 24 hours isn’t long enough to satisfy your curiosity about the natural world, never fear: you can go on to take part in a range of wildlife initiatives
that keep going all year round. Love our Ladybirds Go to www.ladybird-survey. org to find information about this much-loved insect, which belongs to the scientific family Coccinellidae. These attractive creatures come in a range of different colours and sizes, from the tiny yellow 22-spot Ladybird to the pea-sized Eyed Ladybird. Ladybird research is important because of the recent invasion by the Harlequin Ladybird, which now threatens to overwhelm our native populations. On the Ladybird Survey website you’ll find links to a website where you can record sightings of the Harlequin. buy a mammaL tunneL Even wondered which small mammals pass through your garden at night, searching for food? Nottingham Trent University has come up with an ingenious way to detect the presence of hedgehogs, mice, shrews and other small creatures. The Footprint Tunnel is a non-invasive tool designed to help researchers identify the presence of animals by identifying their paw-prints, captured on special inked paper. A Footprint Tunnel kit is available from The Mammal Society at www.mammal.org.

The information you supply to BirdTrack could eventually be used to protect our birds, particularly rare species. Just register on the site www. bto.org as a recorder and the next time you go birdwatching, enter the location you’ve visited, the date and time of your visit then check off the birds you spotted on the list provided. There are many other ways that you can get involved in monitoring wildlife, including a butterfly survey, a national reptile and amphibian recording scheme, a flying ant survey and a shark egg case hunt! These innovative wildlife recording projects are not only a fantastic way to learn about the great outdoors, they also make a real contribution to the nation’s knowledge, so get out there and start recording today.

Hobbies Keep Calm And Get Colouring By Kate McLelland
Close your eyes and think back to the simple pleasures of childhood: a rainbow box of crayons on the table and, beside it, a book of illustrations just waiting to be coloured in. Remember the intense concentration as you filled in the blank spaces with your favourite shades of yellow, red, purple, green and blue? Now fast-forward to the present day, when high-tech gadgets and gizmos allow us to create sophisticated and brightly coloured designs with just a few mouse clicks. Such innovations should have consigned the humble crayon to the dustbin of history, so it’s amazing to learn that in the second decade of the 21st century one of the most popular hobbies is adult colouring. It has become a global phenomenon, spreading to countries as diverse as Brazil and New Zealand. In fact the interest is so great that the world’s largest wooden pencil manufacturer, Faber-Castell, has been forced to increase shifts at its German factory in order to keep up with demand. Printers and booksellers have also seen a stratospheric rise in the popularity of colouring
books created for the adult market. Millie Marotta’s Animal Kingdom, Johanna Basford’s Secret Garden (now translated into 14 different languages) and Emma Farrarons’ The Mindfulness Colouring Book feature high on the UK’s bestseller lists. Mindfulness, with its emphasis on being aware of the present moment, fits particularly well with this hobby because colouring is essentially a repetitive, undemanding activity that can be used to focus the mind. Colourists claim that their hobby can lead to a calmer, almost meditative frame of mind and this view is supported by clinical psychologist Dr David Holmes: “With our workaholic culture, we spend most of our lives in ‘beta mode’, which is when we’re alert, problem-solving, decisionmaking. By actively altering the preponderance of certain brain patterns, you can shift into ‘alpha mode’, which is more like the state of mind we have as children. Meditation and similar techniques require learning and practice, whereas anyone can just drop into colouring-in.” Colouring may seem like a solitary pastime but it can also become a social activity: in
recent years colouring clubs and parties have proved popular, particularly in America and France. The Ladies Coloring Club is a Facebook Group based in the US which links to groups around the world. Alternatively you could start your own group like 38year-old Suzanne Parsonage from Bristol, who launched a colourists group from her local pub. Many local libraries also host adult colouring sessions. If you are eager to try colouring for yourself but don’t want to invest in a book of illustrations just yet, go online and download some free printable pages. You’ll find some great library printables at www. pinterest.com that will help you decide whether adult colouring is for you. If you are feeling that this hobby is a little too childish, you’ll be relieved to hear that a recent article in Director magazine identified a growing trend amongst business leaders who have taken up colouring in order to alleviate stress. So grab a box of crayons or felt-tips and make a start. It seems there’s every reason to add a little colour to your everyday life - and all you need to worry about is keeping within the lines!
