Hello Readers
I
t must be nearly Summer, as I have already had some school fair adverts. If your school, scout troop or church will be holding a fair, send in your advert for the July/August edition. Any excuse for a party!! And the Queen’s 90th birthday is the perfect opportunity to have a street party!! Eric Lanlard has very kindly allowed me to re-produce his recipe for a Strawberry Ombré Cake. It is even suitable for the Breast Cancer Appeal Tea Party, if you are holding one or for the Marie Curie Appeal. Lots of excuses to have a party!! The weather is still unsure whether to go full pelt into Summer mode, but it was certainly fantastic weather for the Surbiton Village Fete at St Andrew’s Square at the start of the two week festival. With any luck, we should be getting into seasonal
times soon. It does seem that the wildlife is blooming. The blue tits and long tailed tits appear to have had another brood, as there have been so many visiting our bird table and feeders. The fox has been sunning himself on the lawn and coming with the cats expecting to be fed. Whatever the weather have a lovely June and see you next month. Best wishes, Karen Front cover photo: Copyright Kate Whitaker for Eric Lanlard’s book ‘Afternoon Tea’ published by Mitchell Beazley, £20, www.octopusbooks.co.uk

With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had. So what issues should we be thinking about? To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound • The state of the property market • Fuel prices
6
A majority vote to leave the EU The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker sterling brings higher inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term. Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedance, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter” if we left Europe. The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000 homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices. 55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home.¹ eMoov say that the general economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge financial decision, which could then reduce overall demand. Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote.2 Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs,
which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices. If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop. Voting to stay At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders. The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit. https://www.lovemoney.com/ news/50954/brexit-eu-in-outreferendum-property-prices-petrolpensions-air-fares-jobs http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/ money/mortgages-bills/whata-brexit-could-mean-for-ourmoney-11364042606186 ¹https://www.emoov.co.uk/ news/2016/02/23/brexit-could-seeuk-house-prices-drop-by-5/ http://www.propertychecklists.co.uk/ articles/will-a-brexit-affect-UKproperty 2http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ article-3452070/AA-doom-mongersclaim-petrol-price-soar-Brexit-Groupsays-cost-litre-19p-days-vote-leave. html

Why You’ll Be Bowled Over By This Popular Game
16
By Kate McLelland A team of uniformed players lined up to bowl on a perfectly manicured green is one of the most evocative sights of the summer. Lawn Bowls is a gently-paced team game that – like cricket matches on the village green – seems to reflect a British way of life that has barely changed in hundreds of years. Bowling is popular for two main reasons: it’s a highly social game, offering a strong sense of camaraderie within the club itself and the potential to develop wider networks through inter-club matches. It is also accessible to new members, being one of the easiest team sports to pick up (although regulars will tell you it takes time and skill to perfect the techniques required). Lawn Bowls is played in singles, pairs, triples and four player teams. Players use weighted bowls known as ‘woods’ that are heavier on one side, giving them a bias. The bowls are rolled along a flat grass bowling green towards a smaller ball, or jack, with points scored for the woods that stop closest to the jack. The team captain (or ‘skipper’) always plays last and
takes responsibility for directing the team’s shots and tactics. Despite its status as one of Great Britain’s most popular sports, up to now Lawn Bowls has had the reputation of being more suitable for the older generation. That view has recently been challenged by an upsurge of interest in Barefoot Bowls, a relatively new Australian variant of the game that has attracted more young people to play. Barefoot Bowls uses four players per team with a game length of between 3060 minutes, although the main objective – to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible – remains the same. Another more traditional variant of Lawn Bowls is Crown Green Bowls, which adds an additional level of challenge as it is played on an uneven surface. In France the game of Pétanque is played on a hard dirt or gravel surface, either in public parks or dedicated areas called boulodromes. Hollow metal balls are bowled towards a ‘cochonnet’ (which translates as ‘piglet’), which is the Gallic version of the English jack. Pétanque is surprisingly popular in the UK too, and the English
Pétanque Association website (www.englishpetanque.org.uk) lists 16 regions where the sport is played. There are thousands of bowling clubs across the UK where you can pick up the basics and eventually go on to play in leagues if you want to take part at a more serious level. The game can be enjoyed at any age (provided you are reasonably mobile) and you can play all year round, as the sport goes indoors in the winter. The British Isles Indoor Bowls Council (www.biibc.org.uk) can provide information on indoor clubs while the sports section of the BBC website (www. bbc.co.uk) provides contact information on the various Lawn Bowling associations for England, Scotland and Wales, each with a search facility to help you find your local club. No one is said to be more than 15 miles away from their nearest bowling ground, so next time you come across the classic scene of players assembled on a green, don’t just walk on by: find out how you can become involved in one of the UK’s best loved sports.

“Where to start?” Dufty leafed through the curling pages of his spiral bound notebook. “It’s not exactly a PowerPoint presentation, is it?” Gina remarked. “Be fair love,” Terry said, “he’s giving us a free consultation.” With every glossy bridal magazine Gina brought home, Terry could see their agreed budget becoming a distant memory. Decisive action was required, so he’d brought her to the Nag’s Head beer garden for an appointment with Dufty’s bespoke wedding planning service. “Venue,” said Dufty, scratching behind his ear. “Terry says you’ve got something posh in mind.” “I fancied a stately home, you know, with marble pillars and chandeliers,” Gina pouted, “but Terry doesn’t like the price.” “How about this alternative?” Dufty said. “You can use my farmyard. Pop down a tarpaulin, chuck some rugs over the hay bales and Bob’s your uncle.” “But what about the pigs?” Gina sniffed. “They won’t mind,” Dufty said. “Think about it, love,” Terry said, “we’re on a tight budget.” “I’m not getting married in a pigsty.” Gina folded her arms. “Alright, keep your chandeliers.” Dufty chewed the end of his pencil. “We’ll just make our savings elsewhere.” “What about the honeymoon?” Terry asked. “Right, boss.” Dufty fetched a business card out of his Format & Design

back pocket. “How about this? My mate Trumpy’s got a static by the steelworks. There’s a transport café next door so you could have a fry up every morning.” “I’m not staying anywhere owned by a bloke called Trumpy,” Gina snapped. “Don’t be like that love,” Terry said, “he can’t help his nickname.” Dufty moved quickly on. “Here’s an idea that’ll work a dream for your wedding photographs.” Gina waited to be unimpressed. “You hire that flashy photographer from town, you know, the one who perms his own hair.” “Isn’t he a bit pricy?” Terry asked. “He did our Karen’s photos,” Gina smiled, “and they were lovely.” “There you go,” Dufty said, “you hire him, but on the day I’ll stand behind him and take snaps of everything he takes photos of. Then you don’t need to buy his.” “That seems a bit dishonest to me,” Gina scowled. “It’ll save money,” Terry said. “It’s my big day.” Gina stuck out her bottom lip. “I don’t want anything dodgy.” “You’re quite right, love,” Terry nodded. “Got any other ideas, mate?” “Here’s an idea to save you a few bob,” Dufty said cheerfully, checking his notes. “You know that posh restaurant that always has fancy flower arrangements?
If you hang around their bins at night, you can get yourself some beauties.” “I’m not having dead flowers,” Gina said decisively. “They’re never quite dead,” Dufty said, mildly offended. “Besides, we’ll need a big bouquet to cover the stain on that charity shop wedding dress I’ve got my eye on.” “Stop right there!” Gina held up her hand. “Thanks for your time Dufty, but I won’t be requiring your services.” “Sure love?” Terry said. “Dufty comes highly recommended.” “Thanks but no thanks. I can handle this wedding, and bring it in on budget.” She sighed. “Perhaps I don’t need chandeliers after all.” Before Dufty could interrupt she added, “You can forget about the pigsty though.” “I hear the church hall’s available.” Terry squeezed her hand. “Would look lovely with a bit of bunting.” “Fine,” Gina said, “but I’ll organise everything else.” “Sorry mate, looks like you won’t be needed after all.” Terry faked an apologetic smile. “Let me buy you a pint for your time.” A pint had been the agreed price for Dufty’s entire wedding planning service, which he had just delivered in full, and to complete satisfaction. Longer days and (fingers crossed) lots of sunshine mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell The days of formal, look-butdon’t-touch gardens, with manicured lawns and ranks of ordered flowers in borders are – most would say thankfully – long gone. Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; in other words, they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. It sounds wonderful, but if

your garden is in need of an update, just how do you go about achieving this magical blend of practical and pretty? The secret, of course, is in the planning. Look at the bigger picture first. How will you use the space and what do you want from it? To begin with, sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, whose training and experience means they will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of yourself. In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end,
Consider changes in levels – they add interest to a garden and are easier to deal with than slopes – but if you are carrying a tray out from the house, it’s best to avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too, dramatically affecting both how your garden looks and also how it feels underfoot. Will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement the flooring in your kitchen for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, where different types of flooring can differentiate, say, a kitchen from a dining room, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify a few stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences (dull ones can be changed fairly

easily, or painted a bright colour for va va voom), hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path, for example, entwined with fragrant honeysuckle, would make a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can provide a link between two different areas of the garden as well as offering a shaded spot in which to sit. Finally, furniture. Take the indoors outside with waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. Meanwhile, if space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away when necessary, or consider
building seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat, for example, and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. Armed with some basic design principles, the time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the sunshine day after day (we live in hope). And who knows, your efforts may also provide a long-term return. Creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion, and turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may even add value to your property.

I’ve just found my cheque book. It wasn’t easy because the last time I used it was in July, when I bought a car, and in fact the last time I used it before then was Christmas 2013 when I ran out of ideas for presents and gave my kids cheques instead. Oh, and in my pocket I have £1.56... What does all this have to do with anything? Well, on 29th June 1966, Barclay’s Bank launched Britain’s first credit card (the Barclaycard, since you ask), and money as I and others of my vintage once knew it has been dying ever since. The credit card and its contemporary, the charge card, were responses to the illusion that cash and money was the same thing. Despite the fact that the Lombards had disproved the idea centuries earlier by providing international credit facilities in which limitless sums could be moved around without anyone so much as sniffing a ducat, people in the post-War age still had to carry cash to cover all their spending. And in post-War America, spending was getting more and more extravagant. One of the luxuries the newlyrich post-War Americans were starting to spend more and more
16 16
lavishly on was dining out; and the first charge card, Diner’s Club, enabled them to do just that. If you didn’t customarily carry enough cash to pay for a blow-out for yourself and all your friends – or for yourself and that one special friend – and provided you had a fat enough salary, all you had to do was pay an annual fee and your card would cover the bill at any participating restaurant. It wasn’t credit, though – the balance had to be cleared in full every month. Diner’s Club launched with 200 members and 27 participating restaurants; by the end of the year it had 20,000 members and other high-value retailers were clamouring to be allowed in. Finders Services, launched in Britain in 1951, was a straightforward copy; it was swallowed up by Diners Club in 1962, and in 1963 American Express, another charge card operation, arrived in the UK too. (Barclaycard also had an American connection: it was a franchisee of the Bank of America’s BankAmericard scheme, later rebranded as Visa). At first, Barclaycard and its rivals were similar in operation: since extended credit was illegal in Britain until 1968 you had to clear your Barclaycard every month, just as with Diners Club and American Express. But it was always intended to be more democratic than the charge cards, which were aimed at the well-off and the prestige trades. It didn’t charge a fee, for a start; there was no salary
qualification but there was a credit limit; and given Barclay’s established position in the UK it was accepted by a much, much greater number and variety of retailers. Without going into too much detail, here’s how plastic has fared in those 50 years. 1969: the cheque card arrives. 1972: the Access credit card is a co-operative of several banks. 1987: the debit card is born. 1995: debit card transactions exceed credit card transactions. 1998: debit card transactions exceed cheque transactions. 2004: plastic overtakes cash. One could go on, but you get the picture. Plastic rules. Which raises a question I’m qualified to ask but not answer? What exactly is money? It’s clearly not the pennies like cartwheels I took to the sweetshop as a child. It’s not a fistful of fivers, either: a fiver isn’t really a fiver at all; it’s just a picture of a fiver. Money as a reflection of itself? It’s no more ephemeral a concept than money as a seemingly endless chain of electronic ones and zeroes. And if money doesn’t really exist, why can’t I have more of it?

f anything is going to put the drudgery of spring cleaning into perspective, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at Ham House’s conservation programme during the winter months. Filthy filters from museum brush vacuums and bags of dust and dirt, meticulously recorded for study and scrutiny, shared table room with badger and hog hair brushes and pots of furniture beetles. Two experts in stockinged feet padded around on a 400+ year old carpet, methodically and silently replacing furniture for the imminent re-opening of the house to the public. Their description of the painstaking and lengthy process of cleaning this carpet, the oldest one of its kind in Europe, compounded my own feeble reluctance towards housework. A mini insight into the conservation of this particular great old house was fascinating. One of many, free, themed tours of Ham House during the dreary winter months when the house is closed for its annual deep-clean, this was an entertaining and informative way of spending a bitterly
speaking it was now spring, the hot chocolate beckoned, and there was always The Orangery Library just off the main area for some peace and quiet and a book to go with it. The gardens offer the obvious attractions of fresh air and outdoor discovery - the ornate Cherry Garden, the formal Kitchen Garden, the Plats and the Wilderness, all beautiful at any time of year - at whatever pace suits you (and your children). You can enjoy views of Ham house from a distance as you walk or pedal along the Thames Path just beyond the House’s ‘front garden’, or have a picnic on the river bank. You can catch a ferry to Twickenham - ‘just shout’ across to the far bank and a pedestrian/cycle ferry will pick you up and carry you back to the floating boathouse from where you can make your way to Marble Hill House. Ham House is a grand stepping stone for plenty of satisfying trips, though I won’t be going anywhere until I’ve at least found my feather duster.

In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to
20
make even more smart devices - although inevitably, Apple and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides. That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition, so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best times and temperatures for heating your home, and can talk to your phone, see that you’re heading
home from work and make sure the house is nice and toasty for your arrival. Sky’s latest Sky Q system can send video including your recordings - from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home. There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive - so if you fancy a Bluetooth-enabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month. As ever, being first on the block with new technology doesn’t come cheap - so maybe the really smart homes will wait until the technology gets cheaper before taking the plunge. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply.

Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.
The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

Don’t Try To Hide From Poor Hearing by Kate McLelland
16
When did you last mishear someone’s name, fail to follow the plot of a TV drama or ask someone to repeat something they said, two or three times? According to the website NHS Choices, there are approximately four million people in the UK with hearing loss who could benefit from wearing hearing aids but who either ignore their condition or refuse to do anything about it. So why is it so hard for us to admit that our hearing is deteriorating? As a society we have become much more compassionate about aging issues such as memory loss and dementia, but sadly there is still a tendency to regard age-related deafness as something of a joke, inspiring caricatures of crotchety senior citizens with ear trumpets. Human beings often use humour to defuse their fears and it may be that we make light of deafness because the prospect of losing our hearing scares us. Hearing loss can be profoundly isolating, leading sufferers to lose confidence and become withdrawn. Not only that, research has shown that it can lead to cognitive impairment and depression.
Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that some people try to conceal their hearing problems (although it’s not usually a secret to friends and family, who have to deal with the consequences). Unfortunately, some people remain in denial until they are too old to adapt to using a hearing aid. Hearing experts agree that the sooner you start to use a hearing aid, the more you’ll get out of it. Many people are put off from wearing aids because they believe it will make them look old, but modern devices are a great improvement on those that were available even a decade ago. Choosing a hearing aid Hearing aids are powered by tiny batteries and nowadays almost all models are digital, rather than analogue. You can choose between several different types, depending on your personal tastes and needs. The Behind-the-Ear (BTE) model does what it says: resting behind the ear, it transmits sound through either an earmould or a small, soft tip that enters the ear canal. In-the-Ear (ITE) sits in the ear canal and the shell of the ear, while In-the-Canal (ITC) fits inside the ear canal with its
working parts in the earmould. The Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) fits deeper into your ear canal than an ITC aid. You can obtain hearing aids through the NHS (although the ITE, ITC and CIC models mentioned above are not standard issue). You’ll have a wider choice if you buy privately, but this can be a more costly option. Audiology specialist Louise Hart from Action on Hearing Loss says: “The NHS can procure highquality digital hearing aids. For most situations, they perform very well and the waiting time to get one is short.” If you or someone you know is worried about their hearing, try the free online hearing test at www.actiononhearingloss.org. uk. If you’d like to know more about hearing loss, the charity Hearing Link can help by providing information, services and support. Visit www. hearinglink.org, or telephone 0300 111 1113. Hearing loss can be worrying for you and your family, but don’t let outdated prejudices prevent you from getting the help you need. In future there’s no reason why using a hearing aid shouldn’t be just as acceptable as wearing a pair of reading glasses.

World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual World Health Organisation event. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors, highlighting the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors. Why Should You Give Blood? It’s easy to find reasons not to donate, but also easy to assume blood will be available if we need it. However, in the UK we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs; around 67% is used to treat medical conditions, 27% in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% to treat blood loss after childbirth. Who Can Give Blood? If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood. Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months.
26
However, some things can affect your eligibility, such as organ transplantation, travel to certain countries and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www. blood.co.uk/who-can-giveblood. Preparing To Give Blood You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation session. To donate, book an appointment or drop in at your next local session. To make your donation as comfortable as possible, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regularly. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid unusually strenuous exercise. • Know your medical and travel history. What Happens When You Donate Blood Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take over an hour; take a friend or book to distract you if you’re nervous. You’ll be given a drink to keep you hydrated. Your identity and health check details will be confirmed, and your iron levels will be checked by testing blood from your finger. A small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure and the donation site will be cleaned with
antiseptic before the needle, connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special scale constantly measures your donated blood until the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm. After Your Donation You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. You should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. Strawberry Ombré Cake Serves 16 - 20 / Prep time: 40 mins, plus cooling & chilling / Cooking time: 25 - 30 mins This gorgeous cake simply shouts celebration! Under the pastel frosting you will find a moist vanilla sponge layered with strawberry conserve and more creamy frosting. It is a delicious showstopper that you are going to love to make and serve. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C)/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease 2 x 20cm (8in) diameter sandwich cake tins and line the bases with baking paper. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter until pale and light. Add the sugar and cream together until the mixture is pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs a spoonful at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla paste and milk and stir in. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then fold in.
plus extra for greasing
Divide the mixture equally between the prepared tins. Gently tap the tins on the work surface to expel any large air pockets and level the tops. Bake in the oven for 25–30 minutes, or until golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out on to a cooling rack and leave to cool completely.
For the filling
When the cakes are completely cold, slice each in half horizontally. Whip the cream until it holds its shape, then fold in the vanilla sugar. Spread a layer of strawberry preserve over the 2 bases, then spread a layer of cream over each. Spread a layer of cream only over the remaining 2 cake halves. Sandwich 2 halves together on a serving plate, starting with a jam and cream layer, followed by a cream-only layer. Repeat the layers. Chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours before decorating.
Ingredients:
• 225g (8oz) unsalted butter, softened, • 225g (8oz) golden caster sugar • 4 large eggs, beaten • 2 tsp vanilla bean paste • 2 tbsp milk • 225g (8oz) self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 425ml (15fl oz) whipping cream • 70g (2 ½ oz) vanilla sugar strawberry preserve For the frosting
• 100g (3 ½ oz) cream cheese (the drier, the better – I use Philadelphia)
• 100g (3 ½ oz) unsalted butter, softened 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 400g (14oz) icing sugar • red food colouring Tip ~Make sure that the eggs, butter and cream cheese are at room temperature before you begin. Chill the finished cake in the refrigerator for 1 hour before serving.
5 Meanwhile, make the frosting. In a large bowl, beat
together the cream cheese and butter until soft and creamy. Stir in the vanilla extract, then sift the icing sugar and gradually mix in. Divide the frosting between 4 small bowls. Leaving one bowl of frosting uncoloured, add different amounts of red food colouring to the other 3 bowls to form different shades of frosting (see picture). Transfer each to a separate piping bag fitted with a large star-shaped piping nozzle.
6 To decorate, use a palette knife to cover the cake all over
with a thin layer of the uncoloured frosting, saving some for the final decoration. Starting with the darkest-coloured frosting, pipe large circular rosettes around the base of the cake. Take the next darkest frosting and pipe another row of rosettes above the first row. Use the palest-coloured frosting to pipe a final row of rosettes to cover the top of the cake. Use the remaining uncoloured frosting to add a few smaller rosettes on the top and edges of the cake.

It’s BBQ time again!
Final copy must be submitted by the 16th of each month, for inclusion in the following months edition (which will be distributed during the first weekend of that month.)
The Companion will be published and distributed monthly, on or around the first weekend of the month. 10 editions a year. It will be delivered to over 12,000 homes in and around Berrylands and Surbiton over two months - guaranteed. In addition it is the first source of local information for anyone moving into the area.
Format & Design
It is an A5 size booklet, stapled with colour plus black and white printed on quality paper. The Companion will be printed on 115gsm gloss paper giving it a very high quality feel. It will have ‘longevity’ and because of it’s size, content, look and feel it will be kept by the majority of households until the next issue arrives, thereby giving advertisers ‘immdiacy’ of access’ when their services are required.
For a Sunday lunch with friends we could open out a boned Shoulder of Lamb, for instance, or a Topside of Pork or a flat Belly of Pork. Another popular choice for a single joint could be a chicken spatchcocked ready for the BBQ. It’s the ‘with-it’ thing!
16
Of course, we all recognise that BBQ-ing is different from a few years ago. It’s highly organised, for a start. It’s real outdoor cuisine, with all the refinements that the latest BBQ technology can offer. Many of the BBQs that our customers buy would put a lot of kitchens to shame! This has had a significant effect on our business as quality butchers, because the modern BBQ apparatus can provide every level of cooking sophistication for the meat. This leads to the purchase of the highest class of meat, because it can be treated with appropriate respect! Here we are talking about our Scotch beef, which is hung for a minimum of three weeks to give you the maximum flavour and tenderness. Whether you go for Fillets, T-bones, Sirloins, Rib-Eyes or Rumps, you’ll find the same mouth-watering quality right across the board, and deserving of the best cooking apparatus to hand. We can also offer a fabulous range of different cuts from chicken, lamb and pork, but there’s something new on the BBQ scene which you may not have tried just yet. Nowadays many BBQ enthusiasts are going for a single joint, such as a butterflied leg of lamb. This is boned and opened out flat ready for the grill. All the cooking can be adjusted to suit that one joint precisely, instead of trying to reconcile the cooking needs of many different meats and offerings all on the same grill at much the same time.
36
I mustn’t forget to mention the old faithfuls, the standbys of every BBQ in past decades and still there today. Beefburgers, steakburgers, Ribs, Kebabs and many other delights. Our sausages are made on the premises and offer you a range of flavours, from Traditional Pork to Spicy Spanish and French Merguez. And, if you like, we can supply any of our cuts readymarinaded for you with the marinade of your choice! Lastly, there’s a rule about BBQs which we always quote: the success of the BBQ depends on the quality of the meat. The better the meat, the better it will BBQ, and the better it will delight you, your family and your guests. Meanwhile, let’s just hope for some really good weather! Best wishes Alan

All the talk of “craft” brewing you hear these days has prompted some deep historical reflections in your correspondent, who has been of drinking age almost (but not quite) since Britain’s – and actually, the world’s – microbrewing revolution started in Selby, North Yorkshire, in 1972. In the UK, the microbrewers’ common intent was to revive traditional cask-conditioned ale in the face of cold, fizzy, over-processed and underpowered keg versions. But in the US, where many of the pre-Prohibition brewers had been second or third generation German immigrants, it was a tradition of tasty and authentic lagers that had been overwhelmed by mass-produced imitations. Two of the earliest US microbrewers were the Boston Beer Company, founded in 1984, and the Brooklyn Brewery, founded in 1987. Their stories are fascinating in their own right, but from our point of view what’s important is that their main products are both lagers based on recipes stretching back beyond Prohibition – attempts, in short, to recreate authentic American beers. What they have in common is that they are much richer and more aromatic than your everyday Britishbrewed version of European pilsner. Samuel Adams Lager from the Boston Beer Company at 4.8% abv is dark for a lager; almost coppery, in fact, perhaps betraying the use of some darker malts. It has been brewed under licence by Shepherd Neame of Faversham, Kent, since 2012, but it seems to have lost none of its original character. The nose is powerfully spicy, with hints of grass and pineapple all but overwhelmed by the peppery tang of the Tettnang hop. The palate is rich and robust for a lager, with yet more peppery spice; the finish is fresh, minerally, and not at all bitter. Brooklyn Lager at 5.2% advertises itself as a Vienna (i.e. slightly richer than a Pilsner). The aroma here is just as powerful, but more floral than spicy and with a sweet maltiness reminiscent of fruit cake. The palate is subtle and zesty and much lighter-bodied than Sam Adams; the finish is mild, sweetish, and well-rounded. By Ted Bruning Payment

The Life List Careers of the Future The world is changing faster than a politician’s allegiances and our expectations have to move with the times - backwards. Forget that flying car you’ve been dreaming of, unless you fancy being strapped to a massive drone, and find yourself a career that’s practically future-proof. Analogue Technician - able to communicate without WiFi and fix things rather than simply upgrading or rebooting them. (Try rebooting a punctured football.) They will probably know how to use every tool in a Swiss Army Knife - correctly. Rememberer - when the Internet is down for an hour and society begins to crumble, these quasi-mystical figures will recall names, dates, places and other facts. Especially useful for
remembering what life was like before the Internet. Map Reader - not to be confused with a screen follower or an ‘organic SatNav obeyer’, these individuals understand the little squiggles on a page and what to do about unexpected roadworks on the bypass if the garden centre’s closing in ten minutes. Person of Letters - someone who can use whole sentences, is an LOL-free zone, and appreciates the difference between nuance and nuisance (clue: it’s more than just two letters). Face-to-Face Friend - also known as an ‘actual’ friend, these rarities will profess to like you for more than your endless clips of cats doing hilarious things. They’ll have rich and insightful (and incriminating) stories about you and may well live within a 100-mile perimeter of your home. Forget going back to the future, move forward to the past! I’ve Seen That Face Before Iain Betson muses on indivualism in car design I was at a Lamborghini showroom recently. To the uninformed, the range of wedge nosed supercars look pretty identical: low slung bodies, smears of tyres on big wheels and front ends consisting of geometric angles. A few days later, I noticed that the front end of the new shape Audi TT reminded me of a Lamborghini - Audi have also opted for the angular theme. This similarity is not surprising, since both marques are part of the Volkswagen group and probably share the same design bureau, as well as the same wind tunnel and CAD software. And that’s a shame. Because, whilst I accept a car manufacturer’s desire for a “signature motif” throughout their range, by the
40
167 Surbiton Hill Park, Surbiton, Surrey, KT5 8EJ time a car designer has been given a brief that they must include the company badge, have a wheel in each corner, seat five adults, comply with safety regulations and then have their work tweaked by the wind-tunnel engineers and CAD operators, the chances of today’s cars having a unique shape are fairly slim. Check out the current Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall’s Corsa to see what I mean. I reckon the last truly new shape in mass-market cars was Ford’s Sierra. The difference between its Cortina predecessor and offerings from Ford’s rivals was massive. Before then, most cars were the classic “three-box” shape of engine, passenger compartment and boot. The Sierra seemed to blend all this into one smooth line. It’s a shame there seems little room for individualism now. I mean, wouldn’t you like to see the happy face of a Messerschmitt Bubble car or, better still, a shape so removed from the Lambos of today, the smooth lines of an “Italian Job” Miura? I know I would.

Summer Solstice Summer Solstice (sometimes also referred to as Midsummer) falls between June 20th - 21st, 2016, and celebrates the longest day and shortest night of the year, the sun reaching its highest point in the northern hemisphere, and the very pinnacle of summer-time. Midsummer is celebrated with a variety of different traditions and celebrations around the world – and indeed around our own country, with parties commonly held from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the Cornish coast, and in particular at Stonehenge, where tens of thousands gather every year for an all-day festival, watching the sun rise early on 20th June and celebrating the longest day with everything from quiet observations to full-on festivities. The lighting of bonfires often forms a big part of the culture, celebrating the burning light of the sun and mirroring it, a tradition stemming from pagan and Celtic roots. In addition to having huge Pagan significance, the solstice is relevant too to some branches of Buddhism and those who practice Yoga, in which Sun Salutations often play an important role and the sun is something very much worthy of reverence. The solstice can be explained by the angle of the earth’s axis, the tilt of which is the reason we experience our four seasons each year. When the axis tilts towards the sun during the summer months we know here in the UK, winter is of course in the southern hemisphere, rotating entirely by the time we reach the opposite end of the year. Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood
16
Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? It’s certainly the case in my garden! In no time at all they come into growth, produce sizeable leaves and stems and quite often seem to be flowering and then seeding in only a few weeks. Top of my weed hate list is that tiny and innocuous looking one called hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). It produces a rather attractive little rosette of leaves which in no time at all is topped with a short spike with tiny and indeed pretty white flowers. So why do I despise it? It is simply that it spreads by pinging out its seeds within such a short space of time that if you don’t pull them up very promptly you soon have what amounts to a forest of these plants all over your garden. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ and this could mean your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or even your lawn. So what is it that makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities in order to grow in the way they do, and sometimes compete
44
actively with the nearby garden plants that you are so carefully nurturing. • Some of them grow so rapidly that they can create shade and so stunt the growth of smaller plants nearby. • Those which have an almost ground-cover like effect can soon swamp garden plants and cause their growth to be distorted or held back. • Occasionally weeds may also harbour pests or diseases which can then move on to your garden plants. Everyone has some weeds in their garden, but what can you do to minimise the problems they cause, yet avoid spending hours on end with a hoe in your hand or a sprayer at your fingertips? • Always try and get on top of weeds early in the year removing as many as you can before your garden plants start to grow strongly will make weeding easier and also cut down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. My favourite is UK designed with a heart-shaped head and a blade on all edges, meaning that you are hoeing every
time you pull or push the hoe – it also has a relatively small head to making it easier to hoe in confined spaces, between plants and in gaps in between rows without risk of damage to your plants. It is a hoe we fight over at home; find out more on my website. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed, as this often causes more weed seeds to germinate, and even if these have been lying dormant in the soil for some while, as soon as the soil is disturbed they come to life so if you are not careful you may make the problem worse. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring many more seeds to the surface and encourages weed seed germination; hence it is best to put up with a few weeds during the growing season. • Whatever you do, it is essential to remove your weeds before they set seed – that old saying of ‘one year’s seeds is seven years’ weeds’ really is true in many cases. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots

(dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots in one go is my little red-handled weeder – small but built out of stern stuff and by tucking the hook-like head beneath the rosette of leaves and close to the centre of the plant, I find it easy to pull out the root in its entirety almost every time. See www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as
you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants!
a mulch which is a minimum of two or preferably three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) deep.
• If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. All this means is that you get the area in which you intend to sow prepared well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date. This allows dormant weed seeds to germinate so you can then carefully remove the weed seedlings, and then sow or plant up as you wish. Because you have already removed one major flush of weeds, you tend to have fewer problems later.
• Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden.
• Don’t forget the importance of a good deep mulch; many weeds can be kept at bay or the seeds prevented from germinating successfully if you cover the soil surface with

The weather changed and the sun made a very welcome appearance during the weekend of 7/8th May, for the Surbiton Village Fete, held in St Andrew’s Square. We went down to check things out on the Saturday. We were spoilt for choice for food.... was it to be Thai/ chilli/ Stateside burgers/ pies/ sausalicious or nachos, and then there were the cakes/ macaroons/ fudges/ biscuits, you name it and it was probably there!! Toilet Training A Puppy You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been. How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the

signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent. Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet.

HOME WANTED! DOMINO
Delightful 4-year-old Domino has had a very traumatic time recently, as his previous owner sadly passed away and he was left locked in his old home with no food or fresh water for a week. Nobody knew Domino was there, but luckily he was found by the landlord; cowering in a cupboard in a very traumatised state. Domino was so distressed that when he arrived at the cattery he spent his whole time hiding under his blanket, and refused to eat. Now, a month on, Domino loves his dinner and is a very affectionate and loving boy. He loves cuddles, and having his beautiful little nose rubbed. Domino is looking for a quiet home, where he would make a wonderful addition to an adult-only family. We don't know whether Domino had access to a garden before, but we would like him to have a safe garden to explore once he has settled into his new home. He is still growing more and more confident every day, and loves to play. If you feel you could give Domino the loving home he so deserves please ring Rosemary on 01737 350307 for further information. by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk 16
Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy. I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in. Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty essentials at the moment is Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I
50
find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels dried out by central heating or air-conditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other

Snuggled up on the sofa with her iPad, My Dearly Beloved sat giggling to herself. I lowered my copy of What Camper Van to ask what was tickling her so. “Oh it’s Steph, she’s just so funny.” The mention of that woman’s name gave my heart cause to sink, for Stephanie was Sarah’s N.B.F. (New Best Friend) - a position to be treated with great caution. Cue eye rolling from yours truly. “Listen you big snob, just because you don’t go on Facebook, don’t sneer at those who do. It’s a great way to stay in touch with people. It’s not shallow at all.” “And what snippet of whimsy is she imparting tonight?” Sarah flipped her tablet round to show me a video of a cat on a skateboard. “Isn’t that hysterical?” “I’ll throw all my Laurel and
54
Hardy DVDs in the bin then, shall I?” “Up to you, anyway don’t make any plans for Friday, we’re going out for dinner with Steph and Dave.” The idea of Steph invading our lives I had resigned myself to. But now Sarah was adding a Dave. I knew nothing of this ‘Dave’ person. I gave a little involuntary shudder. “Tom, what is the matter with you? He’s a nice guy. You and him could become friends.” “I’ve already got friends thank you. We won’t get on, trust me. What does he do?” “I think he’s a Management Consultant.” “I’m not going.” Sat in the car park of the restaurant, Sarah had some strong words for me. “Listen Tom, I let you wear that old shirt as a compromise. Steph and Dave have been married for nineteen years and she says a good marriage is all about compromise.”
“I want to go home.” Sarah pressed on. “Just relax, and whatever you do, don’t crack that ‘You’d be out by now’ joke.” “But darling, that’s my default gag.” “Let’s just go in.” Greeted by a handsome young man pretending to be from Sicily, we were shown to our table, at which the dreaded love birds where already ensconced. Noting that Dave (tall, trendy haircut, polo neck) had a micro check of his watch as we approached, I was greeted with a dreaded ‘man hug’. “Tom! So glad you could make it! (obviously a dig) Tom, I’d like you to meet the gorgeous Steph.” Highlights, fake tan, white teeth, gym figure. “Tom! I feel as if we already know each other, Sarah’s told me so much about you.” “Yes, and I’ve seen the pictures on the internet.” Cue frozen grin from Steph

and icy stare from Sarah. “... on Facebook, obviously.” Minor crisis averted, Sarah, noting that the lovebirds were holding hands, grabbed at my wrist, thereby disabling my left arm. Appalling muzak filled the restaurant. Dave gasped and, eyes swimming cooed, “Steph listen, this is our song - Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion!” Cue muffled sobs and double hand holding. I yanked away my arm and reached for the wine list. Steph, smiling but with eyes narrowed asked, “So, what’s your song Tom?” I slapped down the menu and proudly declared - “We haven’t got one. Dave, I
believe you’ve been married nearly twenty years?” Dave beamed uxoriously at his wife. Ignoring the kick from Sarah I pressed on. “You’d be out by now.” Dave’s innocent smile heralded the tumble weed. “Out from where?” My throat tightened. “Prison, because if, instead of marrying her, you’d murdered her with say, an… axe?” Sat in the car afterwards Sarah was justifiably furious. “Thanks for ruining yet another night.” “Well they made me sick. Who are they trying to kid, acting like teenagers?”
thaw relations I decided to offer an olive branch. “Sarah, why don’t you ask Steph and Dave over for dinner. I’ll cook. Really I don’t mind.” “That’s going to be difficult, she’s unfriended everyone on Facebook!” “Why?” “She’s run off with her personal trainer. I never liked her anyway. Now make yourself useful darling and put the kettle on.” Sarah’s warm smile sent me to the kitchen, safe in the knowledge that no matter what, there would only ever be one girl for me.
Sat on the couch three weeks later, in an attempt to

Croatia The Plitvice Lakes By Solange Hando Set up in 1949 in northern Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes are the oldest national park in the country and the largest, covering close to 300 square kilometres. There, on the edge of the rugged Dinaric Alps, rocks and water have created a unique landscape protected by UNESCO and one of the most impressive karst formations in the world. Yet just 400 years ago, the whole area was inaccessible, draped in mystery and legends from buried treasures to the kind-hearted Black Queen who gave water to the poor. In the 18th century, it was described in turn as ‘five beautiful lakes in the densest wood’ and ‘the devil’s garden’. But those who come here today know that neither is true: there is no devil in this natural paradise but there are 16 beautiful lakes for all to see. The twelve upper lakes and four lower lakes are all connected, divided by natural limestone barriers shaped by water, wind and plants and creating myriad waterfalls. The highest is the aptly named ‘Large Waterfall’, swollen by the Plitvica river and tumbling down 78 metres into the final section of the lower lakes. Just a
stone’s throw away, the source of the Korana is said to be the most beautiful in karst country, heading through the canyon towards a bucolic village dozing in flower meadows. Meanwhile, footpaths and single-file boardwalks meander from one magical lake to the next, festooned in waterfalls, canyons and caves, and whatever the crowds, little disturbs the peace but the rumbling of cascades and bird song. There are popular viewpoints and secluded corners, steps here and there and for those who want to take it easy, rides on an electric boat across Lake Kozjak or a panoramic train in the upper levels. But nothing beats a leisurely stroll where lush scenery and fresh air quieten mind, body and soul. The lakes beckon, more bewitching the closer you are. Azure, silvery grey, deep blue or emerald green, shimmering in the sun or mirroring a darkening sky, they are for ever changing as light and shade filter through the abundant foliage along the banks. The lower lakes glitter through a rocky canyon, the upper
lakes nestle among forested slopes rising to 1,279 metres. Mediterranean and Alpine plants mingle with fir, spruce and beech and in the remote areas of the north-west, trees are up to 700 years old. Over 1,100 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 75 endemic and 55 different orchids. Gentians and lilies add colour in the undergrowth and grassy bells and wild hyacinths grow alongside endangered species such as the carnivorous round leaf sundew. Spring heather, beard grass and mint are also found along the lakes where maple and sumac trees turn all shades of red and gold in autumn. Wild cats, lynx, deer and wolves all live in the park but the brown bear has become the true symbol of the Plitvice Lakes. Yet visitors on a day trip from the beach are far more likely to spot the butterflies, an Orange Tip, a Painted Lady, a Red Admiral, to name just a few, and at least some of the 105 species of birds, woodpeckers, grebes, larks, finches and others, or perhaps a rare golden eagle hovering in the thermals high above the glistening lakes.
