It has been a steep learning journey to publish A Berrylands Companion magazine, from a black & white small booklet, to present day with the full colour glossy magazine you are holding in your hands now. It is an A5 size booklet, stapled with colour plus black and white printed on quality paper. The Companion will be printed on 115gsm gloss paper giving it a very high quality feel. It will have ‘longevity’ and because of it’s size, content, look and feel it will be kept by the majority of households until the next issue arrives, thereby giving advertisers ‘immdiacy’ of access’ when their services are required.

Tips To Survive Those LongDistance Family Gatherings by Kate McLelland

When my children were young I used to dread visiting my in-laws, who lived a four-hour journey away from our London home. As working parents with two small children we usually arrived in a state of exhaustion, but the first couple of days were always full of frantic activity as the eager grandparents tried to make up for our six months’ absence in the space of a single week. While my husband and I were pleased to see them in such a happy mood, we also dreaded it because we knew what was to come. Half way through our visit my mother-in-law’s mood would invariably swing from feverish enjoyment to acute depression, as she began to anticipate our departure. The problem lay in the fact that we could only manage two or three trips each year and this led to a build-up of wishes and expectations that could never realistically be fulfilled in the space of a few days. As a result disappointment kicked in, affecting her mood and everyone else’s enjoyment. Families the world over face the same problem when they get together after a long absence, but such reunions can be particularly difficult at Christmas when expectations are so high.

Here are a few tips to help you negotiate the minefield of family relationships over the festive season: • Give your guests time to unwind Spare a thought for the effort your visitors have made before leaving home - last-minute work deadlines, buying and wrapping presents, washing and packing clothes and toys, not to mention a long journey with over-excited children. They will probably be exhausted when they arrive, so give them time to relax and unwind before getting the party started. • Ask before you buy Children’s tastes change as rapidly as they outgrow their clothes. Take the time to check out what your grandchildren will really enjoy in terms of the food you provide, the day trips you plan and especially the Christmas presents you buy. Don’t purchase toys on impulse then feel disappointed because your present is left half unwrapped beneath the tree on Christmas morning. • Treat the grandkids with kid gloves Small children are creatures of habit and if they haven’t seen you for a while they may

need time to adjust. Try not to overwhelm them with noisy demonstrations of affection and don’t expect them to come to you straight away. With a little patience they will soon be climbing all over you, begging for stories, games and treats. • The internet knows best Those brought up with the maxim “mother knows best” may be disappointed to learn that every bit of advice on child development traditionally supplied by parents and grandparents can now be found online, so hold back on the old wives’ tales and nuggets of wisdom you learned at your mother’s knee. No family is perfect, and coming together at Christmas, when everyone feels under pressure to have a good time, can be challenging - especially if you are trying to meet the needs and wishes of three generations under one roof. If you’ve previously experienced difficulties with family gatherings, make 2015 the year you put those experiences behind you. Remember, the greatest gift you can offer your loved ones over the festive season is the gift of empathy and understanding.

With Christmas fast approaching it’s worthwhile trying to boost your income to cover some of the cost rather than over-using your credit card. So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash. Use cashback sites when buying your presents If you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get between 3% and 10% of your money back. Generate extra cash on eBay and Amazon Not only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget. Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that

you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description. Use the popularity of local Facebook pages Many people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon. Become a mystery shopper If you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety. Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank. You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve

carried it out. Make sure that you read the instructions thoroughly before you set out, however, as you won’t get paid if you don’t follow them to the letter. Turn your hobby into a business The UK arts and crafts scene has risen massively in popularity, and there is a range of websites where you can sell your items. Folksy is one of the biggest of these in the UK, and offers lots of help to set up your account. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craft fair in your local area – there should be lots of trade and it helps that people can see the quality of items first-hand. You’ll probably find that your local school or garden centre hold a craft event leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, bigger venues such as National Trust properties or stately homes in your area are also popular locations for craft fairs all year round. ince the new Care Act came into effect in April this year, several major changes have been made, affecting swathes of older people. Back then, newspaper headlines focused heavily on the Act making a provision for a cap on social care fees of £72,000, and the introduction of a new upper means test threshold. These were both meant to come into play in April 2016, but have now been postponed to until at least 2020.

While this deferral is unwelcome news, there is still the new protection available for people who are worried they will have to sell their homes in order to pay for care. The new Deferred Payment Arrangements (DPAs) remain in place. This is where the cost of care is offset against the value of a property, and those costs are subsequently recouped by the local authority at a later date. However, there is a change afoot with these new DPAs. Previously, the DPAs were not going to attract interest payments, however, now they will. This means that since April this year, people have been signing these new arrangements on the basis that care fees would be capped and interest free. The new reality is that not only are they now paying interest but there is also now no guarantee of any such cap in fees until at least 2020.

Also postponed is the duty placed on local authorities to arrange care home placements for people who are selffunding. This is very disappointing, as local authorities are able to negotiate lower care fees for residents than a family can do. It means self-funders will continue to pay the highest fees and continue to subsidise local authorities. You are invited to take part in the first Neighbourhood Community Forum in Surbiton on 10 November. Kingston Council is launching Community Forums across the borough this year to talk about important local issues, so come along and and join the debate. 61

The forums give local residents the chance to discuss their priorities and develop solutions with Council Officers, local Councillors and partner organisations such as the Police and NHS. They will be informal workshop style meetings, with feedback gathered and developed into a new Community Plan for Surbiton to help define the way services are delivered in the area. Each forum will follow a different theme, which will be set by local residents. The theme for the first meeting is Smarter Streets, which will include areas such as road safety, air quality, planning, cycling and walking. This theme has been chosen by us in response to priorities raised by local people in recent months. The Smarter Streets Forum will take place on Tuesday 10 November, 7:30pm at Dysart School, Ewell Road, Surbiton KT6 6HL. The doors will open at 7pm, when you will have the chance to meet and talk with other attendees and enjoy a complimentary cup of tea or coffee. FRANCE: Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert With its subtitle, ‘A story of provincial life,’ you could be forgiven for thinking that Madame Bovary is a bucolic tale of domestic bliss. Famed for the beauty of its rhythmical sentences in its original French, the novel tells the tragic story of Emma Bovary, a young woman married to a dull country doctor, who embarks on not one but two adulterous affairs to quench the raging of her unsatisfied desire. Unsurprisingly the novel, first published in 1856, caused a scandal, with reported ‘outrage to public morals and religion’ but today it stands as a beautifully crafted tragedy of love and longing. CHINA: Wild Swans - Jung Chang Described as ‘a ghastly oriental fairytale’, Wild Swans was first published in 1991. The book tells much of the story of the author, Jung Chang’s mother and of her family’s history as they lived – and died – through the Cultural Revolution and periods of rapid political change in China. From the traditions of foot binding and the keeping

Books afford us the chance to see the world from a different point of view, and this selection that takes in Sweden, Japan and China via France and Russia gives us just a taste of the wonders of the wide world out there. of concubines in the 1920s to Chang’s eventual move to Britain in 1978, the book depicts in vivid, beautiful and often harrowing detail what life was like for Chang’s ‘Three daughters of China’. RUSSIA: Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy ‘Vengeance is mine, and I will repay.’ So begins this dark, dramatic and tragic tale of love, longing and lust. With some of the most memorable, complex and convincing characters ever to have been written, we follow with bated breath as the fate of our married heroine Anna unfolds. Tolstoy tells us that Count Vronsky, upon meeting Anna, “…Did not take his eyes off her and, without knowing why, smiled.” And somehow from this point onwards we know that things are not fated to end well. A magnificent story, most beautifully told. SWEDEN: The Summer Book - Tove Jansson Tove Jansson is more famous here in the UK for her childrens’ stories about the Moomin family, But her books for adults, recently translated into English,

are a real treasure trove of sparse yet evocative prose. The Summer Book follows a six-year-old girl, Sophia, and her artist grandmother as they spend a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. Deeply touching and hilarious in turn, it’s an easy yet profound read that will leave you longing for fresh air, deep seawater and the kind of precisely true observations about the world that only the very young and the very old can provide. JAPAN: Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami Oh, Murakami. Master of the bittersweet memory, of loves lost and of the intricate details that bring Japan and all its beauty alive to his readers. Norwegian Wood is a love story that spans the decades. It follows a young man, Toru Watanabe, as he hears a cover version of his favourite Beatles song and remembers his youth, his days as a student – and Naoko, his best friend’s girlfriend. All is calm, until an impetuous young woman called Midori marches into his life and turns it upside down.

lready the dark evenings are with us, and the full range of the Club’s facilities comes into its own.

For instance, we have nine hard courts, and they drain quickly after bad weather, which is good news for our many allyear enthusiasts. Also, because of the popularity of evening tennis at Surbiton we have six floodlit courts available for booking. As an extra facility for Members, two more of our hard courts are fully enclosed in the Dome, so that tennis can be guaranteed right through the winter, whatever the weather. Indoors, there’s always plenty going on at the Club. Our spacious Fitness Suite is on two floors and offers some of the latest equipment, from cardiovascular aids to resistance machines and free weights. Alongside is our Studio, where we run regular classes for Zumba, Pilates, Yoga and Indoor Cycling. And there’s CardioTennis and Racketball, too. Winter is a special time for Squash, of course, and our four state-of-the-art courts are always popular. They are heated and air-conditioned. On Saturday evenings from 5.30pm there’s our regular Squash Club Night, when you can meet new friends and find new opponents. On Sunday evenings there’s Beginners’ Night from 5pm to 6pm. In a nutshell, the charity was started in 1997 by friends and family of the late John Lyall, who died aged 46. John had travelled to the Philippines with his wife to visit her family there, and was struck by the poverty in one particular shanty town, just down the road from where people lived in relative comfort. He was a nurse, and started visiting the area with local missionaries to provide food and medical aid. When John died, his friends and family wanted to continue his legacy and now eight of us run the charity from the UK, with a project manager and Board in the Philippines. We have raised enough money to build a community centre and run projects that feed children, teach health and child

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • •

2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tsp medium curry paste 300g carrots, peeled and diced 250g swede, peeled and diced 2 large parsnips, peeled and diced 1.4 litre vegetable stock Crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps (see tip) and crushed coriander seeds, to garnish

TIP To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper.

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes

A hearty and warming soup made with seasonal winter root vegetables. Serve with thick slices of warm crusty bread for a filling lunch or supper.

Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds.

Barry wished he was home and dry. He’d foolishly agreed to a fifteen mile round trip in the driving rain to collect his neighbour’s parrot from the vet. These last two miles were the most perilous. The highbanked lane, in many places, was only the width of one car. The rain rattled down like gravel, and a car sped by. No one was sure how old Mrs Porlock’s parrot was. The bird never spoke, or did any tricks. It had just two states – either tutting with disapproval, or sulking. It particularly disapproved of anything garish or bright. Mrs Porlock could never have fairy lights at Christmas, and the bird still hadn’t forgiven Barry for once wearing a Hawaiian shirt. It tutted at him again. Barry suspected there had never been anything wrong with Mrs Porlock’s parrot. Either the rotten thing feigned illness to get some fresh fingertips to peck, or Mrs Porlock fancied it looked peaky just to get herself some respite from its miserable company. A white van thundered past, making the

car rock unpleasantly. The parrot returned to sulking mode. The vet had been very keen to see the back of it. “There’s nothing wrong with this bird that some manners couldn’t cure,” she had said good-naturedly. “He’s an old soul, just keep him safe and warm.” Barry noticed a sticking plaster on each of her fingers. Even the kindest vets have their limits, Barry thought. With only one working wiper, it was impossible to see what was up ahead. While he’d always joked that he could drive this road blindfold, and in fact had done it once for a bet in his early twenties, without a co-pilot he couldn’t know if anything was coming the other way. At this time of night there were plenty of folk about who drove as though they owned the road. His only option was to leave the car on the verge and walk the rest of the way. Barry looked at his passenger. He wondered if the old bird could survive a two mile walk in the pouring rain. It began tutting again. “I know you’re annoyed,” Barry said in exasperation, “but all this tutting doesn’t help.” There was a sound of engines and two motorcycles flew by. The parrot stopped tutting, and returned to sulking.

Barry slumped in his seat, at a loss for what to do. If he sat tight until the rain stopped he could be here all night. The passenger side windscreen wiper waved happily as if mocking him. Mrs Porlock’s parrot had a perfect view of the oncoming traffic. If only his co-pilot wasn’t a dumb bird. Barry looked at the parrot. It can see the oncoming traffic, Barry thought, and when it sees headlights it tuts. He waited. Within a few minutes the parrot began its annoying tutting again. Barry looked at his watch. Exactly thirty seconds after the parrot began tutting a Range Rover rumbled past. Thirty seconds, Barry thought, would give me enough time to pull out of the way. He took a deep breath and put the car in gear. It was only two miles, Barry thought with determination, they would both arrive safe and dry, or not at all. Snickerdoodles

These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month!

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.

• 115g unsalted butter, softened

2. Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough.

• 100g dark muscovado sugar • 2 tbsp maple syrup • 175g self-raising flour • 1� tbsp granulated sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

Makes 16 Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling 24 24

3. Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnut-sized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips.

Add some chopped pecans or toasted chopped hazelnuts to the cookie dough for a crunchy texture, or top with white or dark chocolate chips just before baking.

Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. What is MoveMber? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”. The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries. “In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. Why Focus on Men’s health? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely

to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are: • Lack of awareness and understanding of men’s health issues • Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell • Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmas The Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’. the MoveMber Foundation’s advice For Men Know your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or

work up to) 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3 days a week, avoid sitting for too long and stay on the move. take action early – ‘Early diagnosis is often key to living a healthy life’. if there’s nothing wrong, your mind is put at rest. Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide). don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer. eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress. stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health. drink alcohol only in moderation Wear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. You know the type: Americans are loud, Germans disciplined, we Brits are stuffy. But, sorry Italy, when it comes to you and motorised road transport, the two of you should never have met. I love your food, your weather, your style, but boy am I scared of your driving! This year, our family holiday was spent on the Amalfi coast. The temperature never dipped below 34°C, the lemon trees groaned under the weight of their fruit and the Limoncello tasted divine. But whenever I ventured out of the hotel, I felt I was taking my life in my hands.

Our original plan was to hire a car in Naples, but a quick search strongly advised to the contrary. Confirmation that this was the right decision came within three minutes of being picked up at the airport. Scooters and cars observed no lane discipline, horns were used incessantly and the breaking of speed limits by large margins was commonplace. Every car boasted dents, scuffs and/or missing wing mirrors, I saw a Chevrolet Spark being driven around town even though it had been involved in a major front-end smash, and the buses appeared to have emerged from a wartorn country. Italy: home to Ferrari with its prancing horse, Lamborghini’s bull and Maserati’s Neptune’s trident badge - perhaps these logos are subtle nods that Italy should stick to four-legged road transport or put its faith in the Gods when it comes to moving around safely. Ciao for now!

Christmas is coming, and that means it’s shopping time - but what do you buy a gadget-crazy friend or relative? These are the best tech gifts for Christmas. 1. A TV streamer - Whether it’s Amazon’s £35 Fire TV stick or Google’s £30 Chromecast, a TV streamer can turn a flat screen TV into a smart TV. Amazon’s version gives you Amazon Prime Instant Video while Chromecast offers Netflix (if you subscribe). Both devices have a range of free services too. 2. FishHunter - Buying for a fisherman or woman? The £149 FishHunter is a sonar fish-finder that connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and can find fish at depths of up to 120 feet - or you could buy the £100 WaterWolf HD fishing camera, which can record up to four hours of fishy footage at depths of up to 100m. 3. Windows 10 - If you didn’t like Windows 8 very much you’re not alone - but Windows 10 is much, much better and comes on a dizzying range of good quality, affordable laptops - for example, the superb HP Stream is £180. 4. TomTom Spark - Fitness trackers are everywhere, but the £189 TomTom Spark stands out from the crowd by offering music storage for 500 songs

as well as sleep and activity tracking. Too pricey? The excellent Fitbit Flex is £55. 5. Parrot drone - You can spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds on a drone quadricopter, but for £69 the Parrot Rolling Spider delivers an awful lot of fun for a relatively low price. It’s a flying drone, of course, but it can also roll along on removable wheels to perform acrobatics. 6. iPad Mini - The iPad Mini is the cheapest way to get the iPad experience, and its Retina display is a pleasure to look at. Prices start at £319. If that’s a bit steep, Tesco’s £99 Androidpowered Hudl 2 and Amazon’s £79 Kindle Fire HD are great value for money. 7. ZX Spectrum - The iconic eighties home computer is back for 2015 in two forms: the £100 Vega, which is designed purely for games and only has a few buttons, and the £89 Remastered, which is a bluetooth keyboard that can play old Spectrum programs. The Vega comes preloaded with hundreds of games, while the Remastered can potentially access 10,000 Spectrum titles. 8. Skylanders, Disney Infinity or Minecraft anything - The big games for children this year are Skylanders Superchargers and Disney Infinity 3.0, both

of which are available for all major consoles and which use interchangeable toys to unlock in-game characters. And then there’s Minecraft, the global phenomenon: the children probably have the game already but there’s a huge range of officially licensed merchandise to choose from including action figures, books and soft toys. 9. Smartwatch - It isn’t cheap - prices start at £299 - but Apple’s watch is the prettiest and most desirable smartwatch around, although it’s useless without an iPhone. If your recipient has an Android phone the Moto 360 2 (£229) is the best-looking Android Wear, while the £95 Pebble Steel works with Apple and Android and has garnered rave reviews. 10. Gift cards - Not strictly tech, we know, but if you’re buying for someone who already has everything they want then iTunes, Google Play or Amazon gift cards are a good bet. iTunes cards are often sold with big discounts of up to 20%, so it’s worth hanging on for the deals before you buy. Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood

There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too.

individual tints and hues you find the most attractive, as there is considerable variation - not only from clone to clone, but also from plant to plant. Looking at them now means that you can see them in their true colours and choose those which suit you best.

If you haven’t chosen the contents of your beds and borders carefully then everything could well be looking a bit glum, so why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers which have brilliant autumn colour and the advantage of these plants is that they will, of course, perform reliably year in and year out. Autumn is also a perfect time to plant trees and shrubs as the soil should still be relatively warm and yet also considerably more moist than it was during the summer months. It is also a perfect time to go shopping for plants which you want to be able to enjoy at this time of year. This will give you a chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which

Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites (which is admittedly often rather too large for a small garden) is the sweet gum or Liquidambar. This is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is so renowned if it is planted in a relatively shallow soil over chalk. Wherever possible, you should try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour and, if your garden is inclined to be rather windy, you should always try to avoid the most windswept areas as strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of

its autumnal shades, meaning that the display is far shorter. The ultimate choice of plants will obviously be largely determined by the conditions you have to offer and also the size of your garden, and so a trip down to your favourite local garden centre or nursery is bound to fill you full of ideas. In the meantime, here are a few of my personal favourites. If you have a need for a climber then the Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which has the potential to grow up to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its delightfully toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddishorange colours in autumn. Some of the viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and if you like bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although both of these do prefer to be grown in an acid soil. The numerous maples, in particular the Japanese maples, are one of the best trees I know for bringing

vibrant colours into your garden during the autumn months. Another good thing about many of the maples - again, in particular the Japanese types - is that they are either relatively small trees or very slow growing, and so can be grown in most gardens or, failing this, even in large containers. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautifully finely divided leaves of Acer palmatum ‘BeniShidare’.

Whatever you choose, and I do thoroughly recommend that you take a trip to a good nursery or garden centre before deciding on your shopping list, it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to exactly the same depth as it was whilst in the compost – this means that the top of the compost should be level with the soil surface. Should the weather suddenly turn dry, then always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, as this should help to ensure that they get really well established and you can enjoy them for many, many years to come.

Beer of the Month

Lovely month, November. Not quite winter yet, and still a fair bit of autumn colour in the woods and lanes; but the Earth is most definitely half-asleep by now and even on those brilliantly clear late fall days, there’s a distinct nip in the air. Still, you want to spend as much time outdoors as you can taking it all in, maybe doing a bit of foraging (great month r.cold J.tree Servisets ces,inBerrylands, Surbiton 020 8399 0103 07980 903 8 for mushrooms, November), before the weather in earnest. Proof June 10.inddstrong 1 14/05/2010 14:19:06 First up is that perennial favourite, Theakston’s Old Peculier (it really is spelled like that) from North Yorkshire. It used to be marketed as being so strong that soft southerners were only allowed to buy it in halves, but that was in the days when some keg beers were so weak they could legally be sold to children. It’s actually 5.6% alcohol by volume, which is respectable but not exactly muscle-bound. Actually, nothing in Old Peculier is all that extreme. The nose has a touch of seasonal caramel, but the dominant note is sharp pineapple chunks. The body is surprisingly light and the palate is really quite sweet, with some cinnamon spice but not much hop bitterness. The finish isn’t especially bitter, either. Not quite as weighty as its reputation would have you believe, but a fine complement to the season. Innis & Gunn’s Oak-Aged Rum Finish is another dark beer that isn’t as heavy as appearances suggest. It’s a meaty 6.8% abv, which accounts for the little bottle it comes in; and when you see that sort of strength and the word “rum” on the same label, you’re bound to start thinking of molasses. The nose lives up to expectations: there’s a certain amount of pineapple chunk, and some herby hop in the background; but it’s the smell of dark rum that thumps you in the hooter. It all calms down on the palate, though: the rum is balanced by a woody sharpness and a slight peaty character, and the finish is short and sweet. Nicely balanced, and one to sip. By Ted Bruning

If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen. Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress. Rather than squeezing into a readymade garment that’s just like thousands of others, you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst a little more costly (okay, sometimes a lot more costly), it will always look good and should last a lifetime. architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind. Why buy bespoke? Buy an off-the-peg kitchen and your choices are limited. Yes, there’ll be a selection of door styles, carcass sizes and, hopefully, several different worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, large or small. You want

extra-high base units? You’ve got them, to the millimetre. Extra-deep worktops? No problem. A combination of different, perhaps unusual, materials? Just say the word. With bespoke you can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint (if you’re having a painted kitchen, you could match the shade to, say, your favourite mug). You can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like, or even go so far as to have special matching sockets fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you will end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’ All in the detail With a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit – square, rectangular, curved, stepped or any design you like. ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality. Working with a designer Before contacting a bespoke kitchen company, it’s wise to start considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could simply be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it

will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be handbuilt and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to fine-tune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

Drooling If your rabbit has started to drool, it might be due to dental problems. Also look out for wetness on their front paws. Unfortunately, when we are “ahhing and oooing” at the spectacular fireworks displays put on for our entertainment our pets are not always having fun. There are things we can all do to help make this time of year less stressful for our furry friends. Whether you pet already has a phobia or if you are just looking to avoid a phobia developing if you follow some of our tips we are sure we can help make a difference. The first thing we recommend is making their environment more comfortable. Closing curtains and the sound of a radio or TV can help reduce the impact of the noise and lights outside. If your pet has a favourite bed or place to go make sure this is accessible. The use of Pheromone diffusers and sprays that mimic natural calming pheromones of a dog and cat can be used to enhance the feeling of wellbeing in the home. mindful of your own body language. If you are stressed or acting differently this will make you pet think that there is something to worry about. Although it may seem wrong, we urge you to not intervene if they are trying to hide or pace. These behaviours are coping mechanisms and any contact during these types of behaviours will just end up reinforcing them. Just remain calm and talk normally to your pet while carrying on with your task in hand. If they act normal and calm then praise this behaviour gently. If necessary or as an aid to behavioural training, anti-anxiety drugs or Natural herbal type remedies (available from veterinary pharmacies) may be needed. Natural remedies can be given two weeks before the planned event and during the event. Stronger sedative anti-anxiety drugs will require a health check by your vet (before they can be dispensed) but are very effective in dogs that have severe phobias. Pet Diabetes Awareness Month

id you know pets can get Diabetes? In fact, as many as 1 in 200 cats and dogs can develop Diabetes in their life time. Like in humans, there are 2 types of diabetes that can occur. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, is a condition where insulin is not produced by the pancreas and so we have to inject insulin. This allows the body to take up glucose from the blood into the cells. Type 1 Diabetes is non reversible and will require management for the rest of the pets’ life; this is the type of Diabetes that occurs in dogs. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus often occurs in overweight cats. It happens when the pancreas becomes exhausted and so it is not able to produce as much insulin as is required. Cats that have type 2 can go into remission if the Diabetes and diet is well controlled over time. If either type of Diabetes is left untreated it can be fatal. Diabetes causes toxins to build up in

the blood, known as ketones. A diabetic patient is unable to get energy from glucose and so the liver is involved in the breakdown fat stores, ketones are a bi-product of this process. When there is a high concentration of ketones it makes the blood more acidic. Due to this state of ketoacidosis we see some classic symptoms in Diabetes. Typical symptoms are: - Weight loss (the body is taking from the animals’ fat stores for energy) - Excessive drinking and urination (the body is trying to flush the ketones out of the blood) - Cataracts – white deposits build up in the eye - Blindness – secondary to cataracts - Weakness and fatigue - Increased appetite If your pet is showing any of these symptoms then a simple blood and urine test can be carried out in-house to confirm a diagnosis.
