his is the first Autumn edition and I cannot believe that I am now looking for Christmas content!!!

Whilst some of the Coronavirus restrictions have been lifted or eased, it is unfortunate that the clubs and societies usually listed in A Berrylands Companion are unable to meet. As a precaution for the mostly older members, the groups have had to make the decision to close for the interim. Most are hopeful of re-opening in the future, and some are looking for other accommodation. If you wanted to visit a club, group or society, please contact the secretary or chairperson of that club.

Along the same lines, I have had to miss the inclusion of the What’s On Diary page, the Local Events page and the Community pages, as most of the events are subject to Covid restrictions.

What to do if you need urgent police help through the 999 service, but can’t speak If you’re in an emergency situation and need police help, but can’t speak, Make Yourself Heard and let the 999 operator know your call is genuine.

WHEN YOU CALL 999

All 999 calls are directed to call centres and will be answered by BT operators. They will ask which service you need. If no service is requested but anything suspicious is heard through the process, BT operators will connect you to a police call handler.

IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A MOBILE

It is always best to speak to the operator if you can, even by whispering. You may also be asked to cough or tap the keys on your phone in response to questions.

If making a sound would put you or someone else in danger and the BT operator cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, your call will be transferred to the Silent Solution system.

This Silent Solution is a police system used to filter out large numbers of accidental or hoax 999 calls. It also exists to help people who are unable to speak, but who genuinely need police assistance. You will hear an automated police message which lasts for 20 seconds and begins with ‘you are through to the police’. It will ask you to press 55 to be put through to police call management. The BT operator will remain on the line and listen. If you press 55, they will be notified and transfer the call to the police. If you don’t press 55, the call will be

terminated. Pressing 55 does not allow police to track your location.

WHAT THEN?

When transferred to your local police force, the police call handler will attempt to communicate with you by asking simple yes or no questions.

If you are not able to speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from the call handler, so they can arrange help if needed.

IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A LANDLINE Because it’s less likely that 999 calls are made by accident from landlines, the Silent Solution system is not used.

If when an emergency call on a landline is received: - there is no request for an emergency - the caller does not answer questions - only background noises can be heard and BT operators cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed then you will be connected to a police call handler as doubt exists.

If you replace the handset, the landline may remain connected for 45 seconds, in case you pick it up again.

If you pick it up again during this 45 seconds and the BT operator is concerned for your safety, the call will be connected to the police.

A Lack of

Interest With the Bank of England’s interest rate at a historic low of 0.1%, you might think it couldn’t possibly go any lower. The economic challenge of COVID-19 could change that, with speculation that the rate could actually drop to zero or even a negative figure. It brings to mind a topsy-turvy world of banks paying people to borrow money and savings shrinking away, but what would it actually mean in the real world?

Let’s start by recapping exactly what the Bank of England interest rate is. Otherwise known as the base rate, it’s the interest rate the Bank of England charges banks and other financial institutions to borrow money. It’s important because it strongly affects the rates those banks apply to loans and savings. Sometimes it’s a direct link such as with tracker mortgages. In other cases the link is looser: cynics often note that banks are quicker to pass on base rate rises than they are to pass on cuts.

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee reviews the rate regularly to decide if a change is needed to meet economic goals. The committee might cut the rate to try to stimulate the economy, for example by making purchases on credit more affordable. It might increase the rate to try to keep inflation under control: if you’re spending more on your mortgage, people have got less cash to splash and drive up prices.

Between the 2007-8 financial crash and the economic uncertainty of Brexit, the committee has had plenty of reason to use low rates to ease economic concerns. With the economic impact of the lockdown and changing consumer behaviour posing an unprecedented challenge, going into negative territory could be the only way to use the rate cut tactic again.

Indeed, the Bank of England confirmed in May that it is considering negative rates for the first time ever in this country. It’s a highly unusual tactic but has been used in the Nordic region and Japan in the past decade.

The effects are still an unknown quantity, however. With mortgages, many tracker rates have a minimum floor so homeowners wouldn’t get negative rates. In countries which have had a negative rate, a few lenders have dropped the variable interest rate charged to borrowers below zero.

Usually in those cases, the customer would continue to make the same monthly payment but more of it would go toward paying off the capital rather than the interest, so eventually the mortgage would be paid off earlier. The banks doing this assume the negative base rates will be a ‘short sharp shock’ rather than a long-term economic policy.

As the author says, the characters “are all different, like us, and each has their own weaknesses. I can see myself in all four of them, perhaps you can too.” Personally, I challenge anyone to read it and not feel at least a tiny bit lighter, more hopeful and more connected to those around us.

A Street Cat Named Bob – James Bowen James had very little to give when he found an injured stray cat. These days we are treating our outside spaces more and more as an extra room, ‘furnished’ not only with dining chairs and a table but, increasingly, with comfy sofas and armchairs, coffee and side tables, lighting, exterior-quality rugs, raised bars and even pizza ovens or complete outdoor kitchens.

When it’s just a case of a quick cup of tea and a slice of toast, a small perching spot is all that’s required; perhaps a chair, bench, stool or arbour in a quiet corner with a pretty view.

But for spending any time dining comfortably outside, a little more planning is necessary.

Pick a place that’s not too far from the kitchen door so that you can get food and drink in and out without too much fuss. But think about what the furniture will look like when viewed from the house – will it block your view of a favourite shrub, or enhance the overall setting?

And there are some specific practicalities. Is there enough space for the required table size (including space to walk around it and pull the chairs out)? Is the ground level and dry? Is the area clear of overhanging branches? Will it be too sunny, or always in the shade?

What to choose?

The next big question is what type to buy.

Consider what works best for your style of property, the overall look of your garden and your lifestyle. It could be: a bar set that takes up little space, ideal for drinks and nibbles; a large, formal table with six or even eight chairs for a classic dining experience; a casual dining set with a cushioned sofa and lower chairs; or a small bistro set for two. Options include dualheight tables that enable you to go from dining to lounging, or a gas-powered fire-pit table that provides warm, flickering flames for entertaining into the evenings.

Dolphins: The Smart, Sociable Heroes of the Sea

A

t the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi, USA, Kelly the Dolphin has been causing quite a splash.

As part of the institute’s training programme, these much-loved marine mammals have been taught to pick up any litter that drops in their pool in order to swap it for a fish reward. The system was working well until one dolphin, known as Kelly, had other ideas. After finding a large piece of paper floating on the water, she hid it under a rock at the bottom of the pool instead of giving it to her trainer. She then tore off bits of the paper, getting a fish for each new piece she presented and thus maximising her fish quota.

By hiding the paper in the first place, Kelly showed that she was able to delay gratification, and researchers have admitted that her scheme to split the paper into separate pieces shows quite sophisticated thinking on her part.

The shell trick A recent study published in the scientific journal Current Biology shows just how resourceful dolphins can be. In Shark Bay, Western Australia, a whole pod of dolphins has been observed using empty shells as spoons. This activity, which has become known as ‘shelling’, involves a dolphin chasing a fish into a giant shell then trapping it by pushing its nose into the opening. After that, the dolphin will take the shell up to the surface and shake it to release the excess water. When the water has poured out of the shell, the dolphin tips the trapped fish into its open mouth.

The Romans took their spiritual connection with dolphins one step further by imagining them to be guides who led the souls of the dead to the Islands of the Blessed. There have also been many stories that describe dolphins as rescuers of ships and drowning humans.

A dolphin hero One such dolphin, nicknamed ‘Pelorus Jack,’ was famous for helping ships pass through the dangerous waters of Cook Strait, New Zealand, between 1888 and 1912. Despite the rocks and strong currents, no shipwrecks were ever recorded when Jack was present as a guide.

Named after a nearby coastal area called Pelorus Sound, he was so important to shipping that he became the only individual sea creature to be protected by law in any country in the world.

Mankind has long believed that dolphins are gifted with a rare intelligence and studies such as those carried out in the USA and Australia are helping us understand just how brainy they really are. No wonder we feel such a strong bond and sense of kinship with these lively, graceful and resourceful sea creatures.

Dolphins in legend Our relationship with dolphins goes back as long as people have fished and travelled the seas.

They were familiar in Greek and Roman art, where illustrations on coins, pottery and mosaic floors show leaping dolphins ridden by gods and demigods.

The ancient Greeks believed them to be messengers of the sea god, Poseidon, and

Cat Flu

Just as with the humanversion, there are many different strains of flu, so it will never be completely wiped out. However, a cat flu vaccine provides a degree of protection against this virus, which can spread rapidly between cats.

Infectious Enteritits

A widespread virus, Feline Infectious Enteritis can be fatal. It is a severe infection of the gut caused by the feline parvovirus, and can be passed by infected animals and equipment, including bedding and food dishes.

Feline Leukaemia

Feline Leukaemia is transmitted via saliva and can be deadly. There’s less of a risk for indoor pets, but the vaccine offers some protection for outdoor cats.

Feline Chlamydia

Cats between the ages of five weeks and nine months are said to be at particular risk of Feline Chlamydia, a disease characterised by conjunctivitis and sneezing.

Whilst the vaccine does not protect against the infection, it does help to reduce its effects.

An initial course of vaccines may be given to kittens as young as seven weeks old, with regular annual boosters needed throughout their life in order to maintain immunity.

Football Needs Footfall Just like every other aspect of the economy, football has suffered a significant loss of revenue during the coronavirus pandemic.

For anyone in love with the beautiful game, two questions arise: firstly, how will football clubs survive amid social distancing and other measures? Secondly, what can supporters do to keep their local teams alive?

The Impact of Coronavirus So Far The impact of the lockdown on football included a premature end to League One and League Two seasons. English Premier League and Championship games did manage to resume in early June behind closed doors, which allowed the leagues to progress to a natural conclusion.

However, from lost match-day revenues through to cancelled contracts for ancillary services e.g. advertising and sponsorship, all clubs face a cash-flow squeeze.

The big clubs are generally more financially secure anyway and did manage to recover some revenue from television rights at the end of last season. The story is very different for the lower league and non-league teams, which rely on supporter attendance for the bulk of their income.

The Future of Football in the New Season Even if, by the time you read this article, the government guidance has changed to allow football attendance, social-distancing rules will reduce the number of people allowed in to watch the game live. Lower league teams have smaller turnouts anyway, meaning the financial impact will continue well into the new season and perhaps in the years to come.

Helping Your Local Team The biggest risk to most smaller teams during this pandemic is the inability to balance their books. Dwindling income from match-day revenues and ticket sales have left many clubs with deficits that they will struggle to clear.

More than ever, the support of their fans is essential for survival. ● Buy a season ticket even if you know you are unlikely to make it to every game. ● Many clubs have turned to fundraising in an effort to stay afloat so if you can see an opportunity to both support and spread the word about their plans, make every effort to do so. ● Sales of replica kits and badged wear – from scarfs to bags – really make a difference both in club’s revenues and in keeping the club’s name known in your local area.

Staying Safe at Football Matches There are going to be social-distancing measures in place – that’s a given. But every football lover has a role to play to ensure football matches remain safe in order to keep stadiums open. Yes, it’s uncomfortable to wear a mask – but not half as uncomfortable as catching the virus. Yes, your team can’t hear you shouting or cheering as clearly, but ironically it’s that very activity that is ideal for sending the virus out beyond the usual two metres.

Now that autumn is upon us and temperature and light levels drop, many of the larger plants in the garden begin to prepare for winter.

Leaves, shrubs and climbers grab our attention with their change of colours, with nondescript greens transforming to screaming scarlets, radiant reds and glorious golds. So why not make sure that your garden enjoys some of this seasonal action?

There are some gorgeous climbing plants with spectacular autumn colour, including Parthenocissus quniquefolia, more commonly known as the Virginia creeper. This is a sizeable climber with a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used to clothe walls where you have not fixed up a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow very tall so will ultimately need trimming if, say, you grow it on a house wall, or it will move on to the roof.

For less extensive covering, consider Parthenocissus henryana, a more restrained relative of the Virginia creeper. For much of the year the divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veins that in autumn turn to rich shades of red.

If you prefer a small tree or shrub, then Amelanchier lamarckii (sometimes known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry) is a large shrub that becomes thickly covered with lovely whitish blossom in spring, giving a much longerlasting display than the flowering cherries. The emerging leaves are a coppery colour before they change to bright green, but in autumn the entire shrub almost appears to be on fire as the leaves take on their autumn colours. It is one of my favourites.

A reliable small-scale plant for autumn leaf colour is the blueberry. This acid-loving, boggy-soilneeding plant turns into a miniature ball of fire once it takes on its autumn colour, as well as providing pretty white summer flowers and a crop of delicious blueberries if you have two or more plants.

Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a superb smallish to medium-sized shrub that is covered with scented creamy-white spiky flower clusters that appear early in the year whilst the stems are still bare. Pale green for much of the year, the

foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free or acidic soil, so check your soil pH or acidity levels before you buy one as it does not do so well in a tub.

Cotinus or smoke bush also has fantastic autumn colours, and is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves in shades of green, pinkish-orange or purple that come the autumn produces a bright display to be proud of. The fluffy seed heads left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke – perfect with the bonfire-like appearance of the leaves! There are lots of different varieties available, so don’t just choose the first one you find.

Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn showstoppers, and for smaller gardens it’s hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning to rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows, depending on which one you have planted. The Japanese maples also do well in large tubs such as a half barrel and so are perfect for a sheltered back yard or patio, as well as looking great in a bed or border.

Making the Best of Autumn Colour Potential • It is a great time to choose plants for autumn colour, but if you’re undecided why not visit local garden centres or an arboretum? If possible, buy autumn colour plants now whilst they are still holding on to some of their autumn coloured leaves, as then you can see the precise shades that the various plants have to offer.

• Always check the ultimate or potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering – there’s no use planting something that will outgrow its space in a couple of years’ time.

• Planting at this time of year works well too, but if your garden soil is very wet or waterlogged then wait for a few weeks until it is in better condition. If the soil is on the dry side, plants will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots will need to be kept moist once the plants are in the ground.

Technology has always been an important tool for schoolchildren and students, but it’s even more important now: during lockdown it became clear that children and teenagers with access to appropriate technology were better placed for remote learning than those without.

Lockdown may be over, but if infection rates rise again then we could go back to ‘blended learning’ where some or all of the school week has to take place at home – and older children are expected to use technology for homework even when things are normal.

And of course, technology isn’t just for studying. It’s also for having fun: video chatting with friends, playing games, bingeing on TV box sets and taking advantage of apps. And that means buying tech can be a challenge: what should you buy if you want something that’s useful for school or college work as well as leisure time?

We think these products should be in your tech shopping list. Apple’s iPad has no real rivals, so if a tablet is your preferred option that’s the one to go for: even the cheapest one is incredibly powerful and flexible; however, it’s also eminently breakable, so consider a protective case and gadget insurance too.

Driving Climate Change

Cycling and walking are much lauded as a way to reduce your climate impact. But whether due to distance or the load you are transporting, eventually the keys have to come out. So here are some tips to make the journey as efficient as possible.

The first thing is to make the most of what you do when you are out. If you are driving to the supermarket, bundle the trip in with everything else you need to do. Go to the recycling centre, to the Post Office, to other shops and to refill with fuel all in the one trip out. It takes a bit of practice, but it’ll save you time and reduce your fuel bill too.

fuel usage. Don’t accelerate hard or brake sharply.

And watch your speed: according to the AA, dropping from 80mph to 70mph could save you up to 25% in fuel (and of course save you the cost of a speeding ticket).

Thirdly, lose some weight. Roof racks are terrible for your car’s aerodynamics and a boot full of stuff you ‘might’ need (but rarely do) is just adding to your fuel use. Unless you are doing a long journey, don’t top up the tank to more than half full.

By Kate Duggan Many children are going back to school in September, some for the first time in months, and it’s natural for them to feel a bit anxious about starting a new school year.

Prepare your child If your child hasn’t gone back to school yet, find out what will be different compared to before the pandemic. Explain to your child what to expect.

Younger children may benefit from acting out some things at home, such as keeping their distance when queueing. Clinical psychologist Dr Emma Millar recommends asking if the school can “take pictures or videos of the changes so your child knows what to expect, as that will aid the transition process.”

Talk to your child It’s important children know they can talk to you about their concerns. Some like to have your full attention while others prefer it when they don’t need to make eye contact, such as when you’re driving or cooking. Recognise that you can’t ‘solve’ their concerns, but you can discuss coping strategies.

Get back into a routine Most children prefer some level of routine. Your child may have been going to bed later recently, not showering as often and having more screen time. Help them adjust to a more structured routine over a couple of weeks.

Make sure they get enough sleep Work towards returning children to an earlier bedtime, including at weekends. Children need more sleep than adults – six to thirteen year olds can need up to eleven hours of sleep a night.

Mindfulness and meditation Mindfulness and meditation can help children and adults to feel calmer and more in control. Older children might benefit from Headspace’s guided meditations. For younger children, try the ‘Sitting Still Like a Frog’ book and CD by Eline Snel.

More information ‘Helping your Child with Fears and Worries’ by Cathy Creswell and Lucy Willetts is worth reading.

The book is packed with practical advice on helping children to deal with fears, worries and anxiety, and isn’t written like a medical textbook!

Extra support All children feel anxious and worried sometimes.

However, up to 15% of children experience anxiety disorders, which can stop them enjoying day-today life and lead to more long-term issues. So don’t be afraid to ask for help: your child’s school may be able to offer advice, or your GP may be able to refer them for extra support.

Dr Emma Millar says, “Discuss what they’re excited about. Children pick up on how we’re feeling, so if you remain calm and positive about them returning back to school, then that will really help them to feel reassured.”

Covid, schools and exams

ovid has impacted on all of us – but some worse than others. The suffering of some of the local people my team and I have been helping has sometimes been deeply distressing.

So, in thanking all the NHS and care staff, and key workers who have done amazing things for us all in recent months, I want to pay tribute to my own team: the numbers of people contacting my office has increased by over 400% since Covid struck, and the urgency and severity of the requests has at times almost overwhelmed us. Inevitably, we now have a backlog and in apologising for delays, can I thank people for their patience and understanding?

Back to school I want to focus however on children and young people – and the need to get them back into schools, if it can be done safely.

I have a long list of complaints about the Government’s handling of Covid, including in relation to schools, but I do strongly support the need now to prioritise getting our children back to school. The impact of missing yet more schooling on children’s futures and, in some cases, on their mental well-being could be catastrophic, so back to school must now be a top priority.

As a parent myself, I have found teaching my daughter to be one of the more challenging aspects of lockdown, and I’ve become even more appreciative of the skills of professional teachers.

And I know how much she misses her friends. I doubt I’m alone!

Yet for schools to return safely, we need two things.

First, Ministers must radically improve how they communicate with schools and especially headteachers. Having spoken to many local heads, they have been deeply frustrated by Government changing policy without any warning or prior notice, contradictory messages and a failure to fund the right things, such as the decision to fund private tutors, rather than more staff within schools.

In this uncertain and alarming world, schools crave clarity, consistency and communication. It seems English schools have had a significantly worse experience than Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish schools, so I would urge Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, to look to the devolved administrations for advice rather than Number 10.

Second, the system of testing, tracing and isolating must be significantly improved – and Ministers must consider if everyone in our schools will need regular, even weekly testing. The threat of a second wave of Covid, potentially more deadly than the first given we will be entering Autumn, must be taken seriously.

Parents must be brought into all the Covid-safety planning – from dropping and picking up children, to how they themselves decide on going back to more normal working. Some scientists worry that it will be parents being in wider circulation that may trigger an increase in the spread of the disease, as opposed to children mixing with each other at school.

Exams I’m writing this ahead of the exam results in England, so my next paragraph may, I hope, turn out to be wrong.

But I’m deeply alarmed by recent analysis of how the Government have decided to allow exam grades to be adjusted.

The exam regulator, Ofqual, is using an algorithm and certain past data sets to adjust teacher assessments.

And the Royal Statistical Society has reviewed the methodology and called for an urgent review.

They said the review should “consider both the substantive issues of the data used and the adjustment algorithms, but also whether greater transparency would have been possible and beneficial.” No wonder headteachers are worried they will be dealing with an avalanche of upset and complaints.

These are truly challenging times - and there aren’t easy answers. But that makes it all the more important for Ministers to go the extra mile to get it right.

Pork steaks are great value and quick to cook. Try them with this tasty vegetable and apple topping for a filling midweek meal. Serve with steamed broccoli and potato gratin, if liked.

Makes 4 Ingredients

• 4 thick-cut pork steaks • 2 tsp coarsely ground black pepper • 1 tsp dried thyme • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1 large parsnip, peeled and diced • 2 small turnips, peeled and diced • 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 1 onion, roughly chopped • 1 large apple, peeled, cored and diced

• 100ml apple juice • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Ready in 35 mins Method 1. Place the pork steaks in a shallow dish. Mix together the pepper, thyme and oregano, and sprinkle half the mixture over the pork steaks, turning to coat. Set aside.

2. Parboil the diced vegetables in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain well. Heat the oil and butter in a heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and vegetables and sauté for 6-8 minutes until almost tender, stirring frequently.

3. Meanwhile, heat a griddle pan over a high heat. Add the pork steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until seared and just cooked through. Remove from the pan, cover tightly with foil and rest for 10 minutes.

4. Add the diced apple to the sautéed veg and cook for a further 3-4 minutes until tender and golden, then stir in the remaining pepper and herb mix along with the apple juice and mustard, and bring to the boil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until the liquid has reduced by half.

Adjust seasoning to taste. Serve the pork steaks topped with the sautéed veg and any pan juices.

TIP You can use butternut squash or courgette instead of the parsnip and turnips – you won’t need to parboil them before sautéing.

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins, plus chilling and cooling Ingredients for the pastry case and filling • 500g ready-made shortcrust pastry, thawed if frozen • Flour, for dusting • 1kg eating apples, peeled, cored and diced • 100g caster sugar • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 egg, beaten Ingredients for the crispy topping • 40g unsalted butter • 40g light soft brown sugar • 50g toasted flaked almonds TIP Replace the apples with diced pears if liked, or try a mix of both.

Make the most of the abundance of home-grown apples at this time of year with this delicious deep-dish apple pie. Serve with cream, custard or ice cream.

Method 1. For the pastry case, roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a greased 23cm round spring-form cake tin (the pastry needs to come right up the sides of the tin). Chill in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, gas mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

2. For the filling, place the diced apples in a bowl and stir in the caster sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Spoon the mixture into the pastry case. Brush the rim of the pastry case with beaten egg. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a circle large enough to cover the filling, and drape over the filling. Pinch the edges together to seal then trim off any excess pastry. Brush the top with beaten egg.

3. Bake the pie on the preheated baking sheet for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is pale golden.

4. For the crispy topping, heat all the ingredients in a medium pan and let bubble for 2-3 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven and gently spread the hot mixture over the top of the pie. Return the pie to the oven for a further 10-15 minutes until the topping is crunchy. Serve warm or cold.

um of two young children under the age of 3, Bukky Maybank, like many new mothers had lost a sense of herself after having children. The days after she brought home her firstborn, a daughter, Bukky remembers feeling incredibly lost and as if the biggest parts of her personality had vanished overnight. She soon realised that her experience wasn’t unique. 90% of mothers in the UK feel lonely. This is her story of how she got empowered, found a community and reclaimed her identity, and how she is going to help ensure all mums across the UK can find themselves after childbirth!

Hi I’m Bukky Maybank, mum to two perfectly imperfect kids and founder of the Making Humans experience. Three years ago I was unrecognisable.

Like many new mums, I felt lost and confused. I felt alone. When I hit rock bottom, was frazzled and overwhelmed and found myself in A&E, I decided enough was enough. A once composed and confident city lawyer, I could no longer recognise myself. That day, I began a journey of self-discovery – for myself and for my daughter. I learned about mindfulness, healthy emotions, time management and healthy communication and began implementing and documenting the most effective personal development tips, tools and techniques I came across. I quickly noticed that not only was I happier, my husband and little human, changed for the better too.

Empowered by the dramatic change, I also decided to set up her own mother’s group. Not expecting anybody to actually turn up, when a community of curious, brilliant, exceptional women was created, its then I discovered that I was not alone. There were other mothers – just like me – craving deeply connected relationships with other women. But, we were all suffering in silence. A recent study of more than 2000 mothers by Channel Mums (https:// www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/mums-feel-lonelyafter-birth_uk_58bec088e4b09ab537d6bdf9) found that 90% of mums in the UK felt low mood, anxiety and loneliness since having children. Let me say that again, that’s a staggering 9 in every 10 new mothers. The same study also reported that three in five mothers admitted to trying to hide their feelings and 38% had never told their

partners how excruciatingly lonely they felt. The true pandemic of our modern society is loneliness, and mums of babies and toddlers are some of the most vulnerable. More desperately needs to be done to support mothers. The loneliness and shift in identity that I experienced - though unpleasant - was not unusual.

On reading the alarming statistics on loneliness and thinking of my own daughter, I was inspired to set up Making Humans, a 6-week empowerment course for new mothers. A bit like NCT, but so much more. It’s not about meeting mother’s physical needs (we’re actually very good at tackling these needs) but where we fall down is on the mind. Building mental robustness and equipping mothers with the right mindfulness tools and effective coping techniques, is so important. The current popular courses and programs are simply not addressing these needs. That is why I created the Making Humans experience; it is designed with mothers in mind.

It is also designed to give them the community and the sense of self, they have been craving since giving birth. It takes a village to raise child - a network of people supporting them in their postpartum recovery and beyond. But our villages have been forgotten, and so previously where a village of people would be supporting, now the disproportionately heavy burden of raising a child now falls on small family units (i.e. one mother, a couple or possibly 4/6 people, where grandparents are involved). I am on a personal mission through my business, to re-village our country and cultivate communities that can help women through the increasingly difficult transition into motherhood.

I did not necessarily imagine becoming an entrepreneur but was inspired to act after realising during the Covid-19 lockdown that this expansive and growing loneliness mother’s feel, was only getting worse. I hope for a future for my children where societies have refocused their priorities and resources, on cultivating communities and helping and supporting new parents.

The Importance of Posture Posture is the way we carry and position our body throughout our daily physical activities. Poor posture can lead to a variety of muscular-skeletal issues including chronic pain and joint degeneration, so being aware of best posture is important.

If you have had bad posture for a long time (and most of us do) it will feel very alien at first when you try to correct it, as the body wants to keep doing what it is used to.

However, perseverance, with regular exercise to strengthen muscle tone, will result in your posture improving without you having to constantly think about it.

For a good seated posture your knees should be slightly lower than your hips, so you need to position your chair height accordingly. If you work at a computer, ensure that the screen is at a comfortable eye level and you are not having to hunch forward or bend your neck.

Sit with your feet flat on the floor facing forwards, a hip-width apart, and straighten your back so that your tailbone ‘sticks out’ rather than your back being rounded. Your spine should form a gentle ‘S’ curve. Finally, make a conscious effort to lower your shoulders, slightly pushing your shoulder blades back and down at the same time.

You may need to do this more than once as we all tend to naturally carry our shoulders in a raised, rounded position, which over time can lead to muscle tightness, tension headaches and back or neck pain.

Ergonomic furniture and aids can help with best posture, for example a lumbar support cushion.

Always ensure that your furniture supports you.

A squashy chair that is too low and difficult to get out of may not be the best thing for your posture.

Likewise, your mattress should properly support your back when you sleep. To check this, notice if your spine is straight when you lie on your side.

If not, it may be time to change your mattress.

Your pillow should also cradle your neck so that it is in alignment with the spine.

Exercise and core stability are important when maintaining good posture. Muscles weaken and muscle fibres shorten without regular movement and exercise, leading to potential joint and ligament issues.

Bad posture not only physically impacts on our body, it has also been proven to have a detrimental psychological effect. Charles Darwin first scientifically documented the link between movement and emotion in his studies of humans and animals.

Stretching exercises two or three times a week will help relieve tension, increase circulation and maintain muscle condition. Yoga and Pilates are two forms of exercise that are excellent for improving tone, flexibility and posture. There are classes available for all levels.

If you have concerns about your posture and suffer from chronic pain, visit your GP who can refer you to the appropriate health professional, such as an osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor.

Lockdown mystery marathon raises £2,378 for Kingston Hospital’s momentum charity Simon Cook, 43, from Avenue South, Surbiton devised a unique 26.2 mile challenge when all public running events were cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic

Family and friends determined the theme of each 3.7 mile loop around Berrylands and Surbiton Simon completed in five hours wearing a variety of costumes that include a chef’s outfit (while baking a cake), a gardener (pushing a fully laden wheelbarrow), 80s disco diva, Spiderman, and Ghostbusters!

Keen endurance runner Simon Cook completed a marathon with a difference around Berrylands and Surbiton this weekend raising £2,378 for Kingston Hospital’s Momentum children’s charity.

With no races available due to the Covid-19 lockdown Simon mapped out a 3.7 mile lap through Berrylands and Surbiton that passed local friends’ houses. He then asked his family and friends to choose a theme for each lap.

Open to almost anything Simon only found out each theme when he arrived at the start of each lap!

Lap One: Marathon runner: Momentum Charity running vest (Cook Family) Lap Two: Disney film ‘Up’ theme with 25+ helium balloons & a green tutu (Pearson family) Lap Three: Ghostbusters (Eley family) Simon was accompanied by the Eley family and the Ghostbusters theme tune every step of the way!

Lap Seven: 80s Disco Diva complete with mullet wig and (Hastie family)

Simon Cook commented: “Thank you to all those that came out to cheer me on and of course all those that donated, I’m pleased we’ve raised so much for such a worthy cause. I don’t think there has been a marathon through Berrylands and Surbiton before, maybe I’ve started something?”

“It was certainly different to what I’m used to.
