Flint Hills Retreat “Changing Lives One Day at a Time” organization has requested a design for a Rehabilitation Center to rehabilitate the wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan war. They are committed to creating alternatives to war and violence through empowering and supporting the efforts of a wide network of citizen called “peace builders” in the United States and abroad. The Rehabilitation Center will provide Psychotherapy, Physical Therapy, Orthopedic, Occupational Therapy, as well as a community center, a peace room that will serve as a deliberation room, meeting room and as a conference room, peace gallery: an exhibit space that features art related to war and creates awareness about aftermath of war, a small theater where films, videos and other shows on war can be featured, a reflection-meditation area, a small research library, a small book/gift store and café as well as a director’s office and space for administrative staff. The Rehabilitation Center is empowered by three basic concepts: unite, nurture, and relax. The site chosen for this building lies on the northern edge of Spillway Park just outside of Manhattan, KS. With its close proximity to both Fort Riley and Manhattan, it is an ideal location for the soldiers and their families. Family and a support system are invaluable in the soldier’s healing. Some of the elements incorporated in the Rehabilitation Center will unite the soldiers and their support system during the healing process. Materials, color-palette, technology and innovative methods will be utilized to aid in the rehabilitation of the soldiers to provide the tangible components to assist in the nurturing the soldier. The different textures will break up the monotony while the color-palette of neutrals and subtle color help unify or provide focus in the space. The location is placed in the middle of hundreds of acres of rolling hills and tall grass known as the Flint Hills and adjacent to Tuttle Creek Reservoir. The hills provide a charming backdrop to the shimmering sun-kissed waters of Tuttle Creek Lake with access to the shore close by. The gust of wind and sound of crickets surround one with peace. The natural environment creates a relaxing atmosphere. The building will mimic these tranquil elements to create a relaxing environment.

Durgan + Dubois LLC Growth, adaptation, and change provide the basis for the design of Durgan + Dubois LLC. With the variations in the economy, politics, and technology, altering spaces in order to stay streamlined is of the essence. Keeping functionality in mind, the culture of the firm, and the ultimate goal of flexibility in mind, added efficiency, increase in effectiveness, and reduction of cost is achieved. This design concept not only offers the necessities a firm depends, but opportunities for sharing and passing ideas.

Different size spaces for lawyers and associates
=
This emerging law firm is turning its traditional work environment into a more collaborative environment. A flexible planning model needs to be set in place for the insurance of the firm’s growth. The space needs to be able to adapt as change is needed. The rising cost of real estate makes flexibility in an office more enticing. Making the most use out of the space allows the practice to save money and be more efficient. Collaboration is essential for all legal processes and work spaces. Lawyers are seeking a better work/life balance instead of the corner office, making a flexible planning model easier to put forth. Demountable wall system on a grid for flexibility and growth.

x collection A furniture collection inspired by the movement and detail of the Italian Baroque style. The main piece, the coffee table consists of dramatic curves coming together and the subtlety in change of thickness creates more movement. The piece carefully takes Italian Baroque qualities and displays them in a simple form.

Pediatric Specialists A new office facility for a partnership between two pediatricians. Their practice is neighborhood- oriented, dealing with a complete range of pediatric care. The atmosphere is relaxed for the patients. The practice employs a receptionist/secreteary, a medical technician, and a part-time bookkeeper for billing and financial organization in addition to the doctors and two nurses. The typical exam room and nurse’s station have been determined based on the equipment/furnishings sizes and equipment selections already made.
