FUTURO SENZA TEMPO

To design, to use, to renew spaces in the home now also means building on experience, on things from the past. Doing so, we can ideally imagine a collection of furniture as so many “rooms,” each offering a personal world for which the furnishings, objects and fabrics are the present and future memory.

Progettare, usare, rinnovare ambienti domestici significa oggi anche fare tesoro delle esperienze, delle cose passate. Si può così idealmente pensare a una collezione di mobili come tante “stanze”, in ognuna delle quali può entrare un mondo personale, di cui mobili, oggetti, tessuti sono la memoria presente e futura.

“The future isn’t what it used to be.” This is a nostalgic paradox one often hears, shared by both romantics and realists. The quip contains a grain of truth, especially for those who have been able to witness the evolution from an “absolutely modern” society to the complex, contradictory, post-modern world in which we now live: a future that has been imagined very differently across the decades, but in which today – like it or not – all the players involved in the making of our residential habitat have to move, from designers to manufacturers, experts and of course those who love and use furniture and furnishings as objects of affection. The fantastic visions of futuristic settings of the 1960s and 1970s, the eclecticism of the 1980s and 1990s, have been replaced for some time now by furniture and objects that try to defy the passing of the years, the decades. Antonio Citterio has been and still is one of the designers that have demonstrated the greatest skill in this far from easy exercise, especially in his work for Maxalto: the brand which like a mythological animal capable of passing through fire unscathed has crossed over 40 years of design history, keeping faith with the idea of renewing our way of living without being seduced by passing fashions.

“Il futuro non è più quello di una volta”. È un nostalgico argomento che si sente spesso, condiviso da romantici e realisti. C’è della verità dietro questa boutade, specie per chi ha fatto in tempo a vedere l’evoluzione da una società “assolutamente moderna” a quella attuale, complessa, contradditoria, post-moderna: quel futuro che è stato immaginato molto diversamente per decenni, ma dentro cui oggi, volenti o nolenti, si trovano a muoversi tutti gli attori sulla scena del design per l’abitare progettisti, produttori, esperti e naturalmente chi ama e usa mobili e arredi come oggetti d’affezione. Le fantastiche visioni di ambienti futuribili degli anni 60/70, l’eclettismo degli anni 80 e 90 hanno da tempo lasciato il posto a mobili e oggetti che provano a resistere al passare degli anni, dei decenni. Antonio Citterio è stato ed è uno dei designer che si sono dimostrati più abili in questo esercizio certamente difficile, ma che a lui è specialmente riuscito nel lavoro per Maxalto: l’azienda che, come un animale mitologico passa indenne attraverso il fuoco, ha attraversato più di quarant’anni di storia dell’arredamento, fedele all’idea di rinnovare il modo di abitare senza cedere alle mode.

For Citterio, to formulate a new collection that treasures classic interior atmospheres while inventing new ones means rethinking the very nature of our models of living, every single time.

Concepire una nuova collezione, che integra quelle esistenti e insieme inventa altre atmosfere d’interni, per Citterio significa ripensare ogni volta la natura stessa dei modelli dell’abitare.

The rooms of the home may return to their traditional functions, but this does not rule out – and even stimulates – the challenge to update other types, forms and details of objects and furnishings, which together create the domestic identity.

Le stanze della casa possono tornare alle funzioni tradizionali, ma questo non esclude, anzi stimola la sfida a rinnovare altri tipi, forme, dettagli di oggetti e mobili, che tutti insieme creano l’identità domestica.

Born and raised on the idea of Piero Ambrogio Busnelli and Afra & Tobia Scarpa – re-design the modern tradition, reinvented through very refined craftsmanship (above all in the forms of wood as a preferred material) – with the work of Antonio Citterio the Maxalto furniture has reached the point of embodying a catalogue of modern neo-classics. Modern because it is ideally linked to the visions of the most libertarian masters like Jean-Michel Frank, with respect to the excessive rigor of Le Corbusier or Mies van der Rohe. Neo-classics, because their forms and finishes are filtered by the contemporary perspective of an Italian architect. The cultural roots are important, and the humanistic orientation of the designer is essential to approach the various scales with the same artful intelligence. While he designs the construction of brand new buildings, infrastructures or entire skyscrapers, Citterio is well aware of the fact that in interiors, for many reasons, the forms and types of the furnishings always change more slowly, without radical breaks with the past. The alternative rituals of living in “revolutionary” times like the late 1960s, the ideas of multifunctional and communitarian environments, the utopia of “design for everyone,” have been followed by a phase of rethinking that still continues today. The home and its traditional spaces – living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms – return to their status as a nucleus of social interaction, with some big difference. In those same spaces, also thanks to an exceptional acceleration of technology, it is now possible to have both personal and electronic communication: to have a dialogue over great distances, to interact with sophisticated devices, or simply to rediscover the dimension of play, enjoyment, conversation. In this domestic scenario that is undoubtedly more complex than in the past, Maxalto’s idea of a classic modernism (or a modern classicism) conserves its value in the existing models; but the new products for 2020 designed by Citterio, like the entire corporate system that lies behind and around them, organically evolve to the point of revealing a project of interior culture updated to adapt to the changes in our lifestyles. A multiplication of types, materials, coverings, fabrics, forming a coherent whole in a collection incorporated in previous collections; yet in terms of breadth and variety, it almost seems to constitute a new identity for all the production, for the entire company and not just its catalogue.

Nati e cresciuti dall’idea di Piero Ambrogio Busnelli e Afra e Tobia Scarpa - rifarsi alla tradizione moderna, reinventata attraverso una raffinatissima esecuzione artigiana (soprattutto nelle forme del legno come materiale eletto) - i mobili Maxalto con il lavoro di Antonio Citterio sono arrivati a comporre un catalogo di neo-classici moderni. Moderni perché idealmente legati a visioni di Maestri più libertari come JeanMichel Frank, rispetto al troppo rigore di Le Corbusier o Mies van der Rohe: neo-classici perché filtrati nelle forme e nelle finiture attraverso lo sguardo contemporaneo di un architetto italiano. Le radici culturali sono importanti, l’impronta umanistica del progettista è essenziale per affrontare le diverse scale con la stessa intelligenza del disegno. Mentre progetta la costruzione di edifici nuovissimi, infrastrutture o grattacieli interi, Citterio sa bene che negli interni, per molte ragioni, forme e tipologie dei mobili cambiano sempre più lentamente, senza clamorose fratture col passato. Ai rituali alternativi dell’abitare in tempi “rivoluzionari” come il ‘68, alle idee di ambienti polifunzionali e comunitari, all’utopia del “design per tutti”, è seguita una fase di ripensamento che ancora dura. La casa e i suoi ambienti tradizionali - soggiorni, sale da pranzo, stanze da letto - tornano ad essere il nucleo dell’interazione sociale, con la grande differenza che negli stessi spazi, grazie anche a un’accelerazione tecnologica fortissima, è possibile la comunicazione personale ma pure quella elettronica: dialogare anche a grandissime distanze, interagire con attrezzature sofisticate, o semplicemente ritrovare la dimensione del gioco, del divertimento, della conversazione. In questo scenario della casa certamente più complesso di un tempo, l’idea Maxalto di un modernismo classico (o di un classicismo moderno) mantiene il suo valore nei modelli esistenti: ma le nuove produzioni per il 2020 disegnate da Citterio, come tutto il sistema d’impresa che sta loro dietro e a fianco, si evolvono organicamente fino a mostrare un progetto di cultura dell’arredamento aggiornato ai cambiamenti dell’abitare. Aumentano le tipologie, i materiali, i rivestimenti, i tessuti: si forma un insieme coerente, una collezione che si integra con quelle precedenti, ma che per ampiezza e varietà fa pensare quasi a una nuova identità di tutta la produzione, dell’intera azienda e non solo del suo catalogo.

Having begun precisely with the pursuit of new forms for the creations of cabinetmaking in the great Italian tradition, over the years the production of Maxalto has shaped its identity with the perfection of fine materials: they include the use of wood, in varieties such as Wengè, which Citterio was one of the first to widely explore. Together with modern classic forms inspired by Art Deco elegance, this approach has set many of the furnishings of Maxalto apart over the long term. Nevertheless, even the most successful materials need to be taken towards new possibilities. So for the Alcor series of cabinets and tables, the latest collection reprises the use of Chilean Tineo wood, with a damier (checkerboard) motif. There are more metal structures to support the tables and cabinets, in cast aluminium treated with finishes that make it resemble burnished bronze: due to their great attention to detail, these structures bring yet another classic-modern reference to mind, the artistic skill of Diego Giacometti – brother of the more famous Alberto – creator of extraordinary bronze furniture, at times as a collaboration between the two. Great attention to detail has also gone into the forms and coverings of the new Apollo, Aurae, Amoenus Soft and Otium Soft sofa series: particular stitching stands out on the more palpably structured textiles at times with a geometric pattern, and on the leather coverings, with a different version for almost every model. The painstaking workmanship, however, does not preclude application of the industrial know-how of B&B Italia, visible for example in certain structures that suggest those of the Caratos seating: series already in production that nevertheless fit perfectly into the latest collection. The objective of a unified catalogue seems to have been pursued and achieved, and the idea of a grand Maxalto home made of many “communicating rooms” is again materialized.

Iniziata proprio con la ricerca di nuove forme per le lavorazioni di ebanisteria della grande tradizione italiana, la produzione Maxalto ha creato negli anni la sua identità con l’aggiungersi nel corso del tempo di materiali pregiati: tra questi l’uso del legno in essenze come il Wengé, che Citterio ha ampiamente sperimentato per primo e che insieme alle forme classiche moderne ispirate all’eleganza Art Deco ha distinto a lungo più mobili Maxalto. Eppure anche i materiali con più successo hanno bisogno di essere accostati a nuove possibilità. Così l’ultima collezione riprende per la serie di contenitori e tavoli Alcor il caratteristico legno cileno Tineo, con un motivo damier (a dama). Aumentano le strutture metalliche di supporto a tavoli e contenitori, in fusione d’alluminio, trattato con finiture che lo fanno assomigliare a un bronzo brunito: per la cura dei dettagli in queste strutture viene in mente ancora un riferimento classico-moderno, la sapienza artistica di Diego Giacometti - fratello del più famoso Alberto - creatore di straordinari mobili in bronzo, a volte in collaborazione tra i due. Anche nelle forme e nei rivestimenti delle nuove serie di divani Amoenus, Auræ, Otium molta attenzione è data ai dettagli: su materiali tessili più strutturati e caratterizzati a volte da un disegno geometrico si distinguono cuciture particolari, quasi una diversa per ogni modello, fino alla combinazione di inserti tra pelle (o cuoio) e tessuto. Tanta cura del dettaglio per l’esecuzione artigianale non esclude però l’uso del know-how industriale B&B Italia, che è riconoscibile ad esempio in certe strutture, che richiamano quelle delle sedute Caratos: modelli già in produzione e che pure si inseriscono nell’ultima collezione. L’obiettivo di un catalogo unitario sembra perseguito e raggiunto, l’idea di una grande casa Maxalto fatta di tante “stanze comunicanti” si materializza ancora.
