Market Update Summary During 2017, the architecture and design industry in Brisbane experienced changes in terms of portfolio management and sector development. With the decrease in multi-residential developments, many practices diversified into aged care (lifestyle living) and student accommodation. Education and health were also strong sectors. A number of interstate practices opened Brisbane offices in 2016 and faced challenges in terms of business development, with some needing to temporarily become documentation resources for interstate projects while they looked at other avenues. Some offices took this opportunity to merge complementing disciplines, and bids were made to woo new principals and partners into bringing their existing client lists and to add gravitas and profile to tenders and
proposals. A surge of larger scale construction on the Sunshine and Gold Coast also saw influential practices opening new offices in the area, with growth expected in these areas over the next few years. Strong candidates who can articulate their ideas verbally and visually remained in demand. Architects and interior designers with Revit skills remained highly sought-after, particularly across the education and health sectors. At least seven Brisbane precincts are experiencing urban regeneration and a there has been a focus on the use of alleyways and street level areas (such as Fish Lane) over big box retail at the CBD level. Although competition between practices is high, the variety of sectors booming should see a cautiously optimistic start to 2018 from Brisbane to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts for practices with diverse areas of interest.
