Hello from Lindsay

Lindsay Urquhart, CEO & Founder, Bespoke Careers

2019 looks set to be another busy year with requirements for talent in our sector remaining high in all the regions we operate in. In the past twelve months the sustained candidate shortage in the UK has seen salaries steadily increase and we anticipate that this will continue into the year ahead. Employers looking to win the war on talent have been reviewing their benefits packages and we’re seeing some innovative initiatives implemented to encourage staff retention, engagement and to improve diversity. In Q4 last year we saw a sharp increase in the number of contract staff requirements as forward-thinking businesses looked to temporary staff as a solution to spikes in workload and as a way of ‘buying some time’ to find the ‘perfect fit’ permanent hire. Sector-wise we are seeing the highest demand for candidates within the infrastructure, workplace and hospitality sectors. Job seekers with experience in these project types can expect to receive decent salary increases when making a move and will often receive multiple job offers post-interview. The market in Australia continues to thrive with many practices working on government-funded infrastructure projects across transport, justice, social housing and wellness. As employers increasingly focus on retention, diversity and flexibility in the workplace we’ve seen demand for HR and practice managers increase and we envisage that will continue in the year ahead. There has been a noticeable slow-down in large-scale, mass market apartment projects but the continued migration to Australia and resulting population growth has meant work in the private residential and education sectors has increased; the hospitality sector also remains strong and applicants with expertise in these areas continue to be in high demand.

In the US, the architecture and design market has grown steadily over the past twelve months and the outlook for the year ahead is incredibly positive. New York’s status as a design capital continues to attract international practices and architects with between five and eight years’ experience remain in high demand. Strategic searches for those with healthcare, transportation and sustainability experience look likely to remain a focus for us in 2019. The private developer-driven residential sector continues to be incredibly busy with no end in sight for large-scale projects in all five boroughs. The West Coast has seen some exciting changes which are creating opportunities in the architecture world including the emergence of the legalized cannabis industry, the 2028 Olympics, and an extensive overhaul to LAX airport and its connecting transport. Workplace benefits, diversity and career development have become the focus for many employers as attracting and retaining talent sits at the forefront of their agenda. Across the EMEA regions we’ve seen the most activity in the Middle East, particularly in Dubai where many highly experienced job seekers have sought relocation. Attracted by high levels of responsibility, impressive salary packages and some incredible employer benefits offered by large developers, these opportunities can be hard to resist. The highest demand continues to be seen in aviation and rail; job seekers with expertise in infrastructure, urban design and landscape are highly sought after.

Market Update Summary The current economic conditions in the UK, the ongoing boom in Australia and the negative net migration from London to other UK cities continues to result in an acute skills shortage in London. Historically around 60% of introductions we made to our clients in the capital would be Europeans or Antipodeans. EU and overseas applications fell sharply after the Brexit vote and it continues to fall as we see the slow migration of Europeans based here back to their home nations. While the wider economic impact of Brexit remains unclear, we envisage the demand for highly skilled individuals will outweigh supply in 2019 and employers will have to work hard to attract and retain talent. After almost a decade of stagnation we’ve seen salaries in the capital rise sharply over the past twelve months. In the regions where wages have historically been significantly lower, they have steadily increased, and in booming cities like Birmingham and Manchester they are reaching near parity with average-to-low London offers. Ambitious growth plans for these cities have created sustainable longterm opportunities within the built environment and as result they are becoming increasingly attractive options for those struggling with the high cost of living in London. In a bid to attract and retain people, employers have been reviewing and enhancing their benefits packages. Pressure to offer flexible working arrangements has increased and we are now seeing more offers where people are contracted to work flexibly. Gender diversity is a high priority for many and we’ve seen some innovative initiatives implemented to address the balance, particularly at board level. We envisage the demand for experienced female leaders will continue to increase in 2019.

Forward-thinking businesses are utilising experienced temporary contract staff to manage spikes in workload and to ‘buy them time’ to hire permanent staff. A number of the large award-winning practices we work with are regularly utilising up to 10-15% contract staff to help manage resources. Whilst demand for permanent talent continues to outweigh supply and the economic uncertainty continues, we envisage that requirements for temporary contract staff in London will increase, especially for those with Revit and Rhino skills. Requirements for individuals with retail, highend residential and education experience have fallen in the last twelve months and we’ve seen less demand for healthcare architects. Job seekers with mixed use, private rental schemes (PRS) and hospitality experience are in high demand and will often receive multiple job offers. High profile infrastructure projects such as HS2 and the Heathrow expansion mean those with transport experience can command high salaries and again applicants with this experience in this sector are likely to be offered higher salaries than those in other sectors. The booming hospitality sector continues to remain strong and demand, particularly for designers with interiors experience, is at an all time high. In this candidate-short market, employers looking to hire in 2019, whether via an agent or their own network, would be well-advised to offer potential applicants a highly competitive salary and a fair benefits package. We would also encourage them to give due consideration to who is best suited in their organisation to interview. The decision to accept one offer over another is often an emotional one and the time it took to respond to their initial application, the interview experience itself and the timely (or otherwise) nature of the post interview feedback invariably plays a part in the outcome. Get these right and you’ll give your business the best possible chance of success.

In a bid to attract and retain people, employers have been reviewing and enhancing their benefits packages. Global Salary Guide 2019 | 5

Sydney-siders are continuing to enjoy a buoyant market as we enter 2019. While we have experienced some significant shifts over the past 18 months, the slowing of the developer-lead multi-residential sector has been balanced by an increase in government spending on infrastructure across transport, justice, social housing and wellness. Some of those practices working on rail / infrastructure and education projects (secondary and tertiary) have experienced their best year to date. The interiors and architectural / interiors building product sectors have been experiencing stronger conditions as the fitout of new and refurbished properties across the city continues. There has been a softening in wages growth across the sector over the past 12 months for mid-to-associate level in interior design and architecture; this is due to practices pulling back on inflated offers which were made over the past few years from faster than usual growth and a shortage of people in our sector. This growth rate has led to a surge in movement at the strategic level while practices seek new leaders to join their studios where they may traditionally have promoted from within. Salaries at this level have seen strong growth and competition is vigorous for standout leaders, managers and designers at the top of their game. We have seen an increase in HR and practice management roles as mid-to-large practices have grown and are focusing on diversity / flexibility and equal opportunity. An increase in gender equality at associate level and above has also increased as firms try to improve and balance their economic participation and decision making. Across design, the retail and hospitality sectors have picked up and the workplace sector also desires this design experience as they add the ‘third space’ into their workplace projects which have the look and feel of a hotel or membership club. Tougher laws around sponsoring have slowed interest in overseas candidates but on the flipside those still willing to sponsor can now more easily compete for talented overseas architects.

We have also seen a particular spike in the demand for Australian interior designers with hospitality and workplace to relocate to the Big Apple.

Australian architects looking abroad are still in high demand across New York, LA and London on their working holiday Visa or E3. We have also seen a particular spike in the demand for Australian interior designers with hospitality and workplace to relocate to the Big Apple. Around 15% of our placements in Sydney are intercompany with our global team finding talent for start-ups abroad or relocating people for a sunny sea-change to Sydney. There has been an increase in the casual workforce across architecture and interiors in line with sudden project-driven growth for new studios and also for large practices outgrowing their current office space and looking for a more flexible work force. Flexible working is now mainstream with practices embracing output over hours in the studio and hiring practice managers and HR staff to help implement this new way of working. It is inspiring to see several mid-tier practices grow from 40 people towards 100 and looking at further growth with targeted structure through their business plans off the back of one of their most successful financial years - 2019 is looking bright!

The figures detailed above are exclusive of superannuation. As of 20 June 2018, and in accordance with the Architects Awards 2010 [MA000079], a full-time Graduate of Architecture* (entry level) must be paid a minimum of $51,020 per annum and a full-time Registered Architect** (entry level) or Experienced Graduate of Architecture must be paid a minimum of $58,986 per annum on a full-time salary Australian national minimum wage is $37,398.84 per annum. This information should be used as a guide only. Current rates of pay and award standards can be found on the Fair Work Commission website www.fairwork.gov.au

Melbourne remained consistently busy across most sectors in 2018 and the forecast remains strong in 2019. Transport and infrastructure are particularly active across metropolitan Melbourne and some regional parts of Victoria. This follows the construction of the new Metro line, upgrades to existing stations across central and regional networks, and the removal of level crossings. The continuous stream of migration to Melbourne and subsequent population growth has seen an increase in infrastructure, transport, institutional education and multiresidential projects throughout central and inner suburban areas. As a result, clients are avidly looking for candidates with experience in these sectors, or with experience across large, complex projects on Revit. The hotel sector remains consistent with new builds, refurbishment works, and the construction of boutique hotels in regional areas and interstate all contributing to this. Luxury private residential and high-end, boutique multi-residential projects continue to develop in the inner, more affluent suburbs of Melbourne. There has been a noticeable slowdown in large-scale, mass market apartment projects, yet there is still a high demand for sustainably driven, affordable housing and community focused developments as people become increasingly conscious that their choices have the power to impact the environment.

Workplace strategy and change management is also at the forefront of the commercial interiors market, with a significant increase in these roles required for the initial stages of projects and to support corporate office relocations. Commercial occupancy rates had improved across the Melbourne CBD in 2018 and remain consistent in 2019. A multitude of projects on-site across Melbourne and surrounding areas have seen the product supplier industry continue to grow. Hiring remains busy across studios of all sizes, particularly larger national and global practices that are winning significant local projects, as well as practices with institutional education specialisation. Candidates skilled in Revit with 6 – 12+ years’ experience running large-scale projects continue to be in high demand across most sectors, and excellent Revit candidates are receiving on average 3 – 5 job offers across both interiors and architecture. The demand for business development managers, sales representatives and account managers remain high for architectural and interior product suppliers. We have noticed that these companies are increasingly more open to candidates who have worked with other types of product. Business development managers are receiving around 3 job offers on average, with leading product companies all vying (very competitively) for the best talent. The 2019 outlook continues to be notably positive in urban regeneration, mixed-use and institutional education sectors, to deliver the infrastructure and public amenities required by our growing population. We predict a continuous softening of larger, mass residential development as banks continue to tighten lending for both owner-occupiers and investors, along with the inflated price of land holdings and development potential. We expect the market to be consistent through the year.

The multitude of projects on site across Melbourne and surrounding areas has seen the product supplier industry remain incredibly busy.

Across the architecture and interiors sectors in Brisbane, there has been a consolidation of resources with cyclical demand affecting hiring decisions in many industry sectors. In the first quarter of the year there was much optimism in interiors teams with new team leaders being hired and additional resources provided from intermediate to student level. In interiors, the demand for skills to be client-facing and capable of business development remains strong with intermediate interior designers being considered for senior roles.

Another factor effecting hiring decisions this year has been the opening and acquisition of new studios interstate. This has meant new business development opportunities for the studios with further resources being available interstate. The market has seen growth across offices of varying sizes and scopes of design work. In Brisbane most practices now use Revit with some switching over from ArchiCAD and AutoCAD in 2018; as a result, Revit proficiency is becoming a mandatory competency from associate level down.

Brisbane studios in 2018 have continued to hire contractors to meet short-term project demands whilst addressing ongoing project In architecture, the focus has continued to be requirements. This trend will continue until around strategic hires with Brisbane studios seeking new principals and partners to focus on several strategic hires are in place in Brisbane, business development and winning work. The Brisbane Metro Investment Program has also created optimism nationally and internationally with five design studios joining confidential consortiums in 2018. As early as January, interstate design offices were hiring for a team to be based in Brisbane for six months and Brisbane-based offices relocated whole teams to confidential offsite locations for the design proposal stage. Interestingly, this put a strain on some offices with a lack of resources resulting in hiring decisions being made on a temporary basis knowing that when these teams would be returning in September, they would need to be reabsorbed into the office.

Strong design skills are in demand across all levels with several studios seeking top talent and lead designers from the international and local stage.

The pattern of steady growth in the New York architecture and design market over the past twelve months is expected to continue in 2019, with many of our clients reporting a positive outlook for anticipated growth in the forthcoming year. Following on from a buoyant 2017, the past twelve months continued the pattern of steady growth with only a slight slowdown in hiring towards the end of 2018. The past year has seen us working with firms across all sectors. The private developer-driven residential sector continues to be very busy with no end in sight to large-scale projects in all five boroughs. Education and transportation sectors are particularly busy, and competition for these projects is fierce. Many clients were using our services on a potential ‘green light’ basis, awaiting the go-ahead on a number of projects. Roughly fifty percent of these went forward with some delays on the remainder which are still awaiting the go-ahead. New York’s status as a design capital continues to attract international design firms eager to set up offices and establish themselves in an already competitive market. Looking ahead, major revitalization projects across the city such as the proposed Red Hook Waterfront, Brooklyn Navy Yard and Hudson Yards Phase 2 are all set to deliver a continued large volume of mixed-use work. The announcement that Amazon will (partly) set up its new headquarters in Long Island City should see a boost to the Queens neighborhood and a knock-on in development in the area. The upgrades of New York’s MTA stations, Moynihan Train Hall and all three major airports will continue to provide a strong revenue stream for transportation firms involved in their delivery. Strategic searches for senior architects with experience in healthcare, transportation and sustainability remain a focus for us going into 2019. BIM specialists remain highly sought after as more firms recognize the need to have a dedicated person for this within their organizations. As ever, the more senior architect roles seem to outweigh the junior roles. However, firms requiring architects with between five and eight years’ professional experience is a steady need.

The figures detailed above should be used as a guide and are based on salary only, exclusive of other benefits.

Within interior design, the continued growth in the shared-space office market has placed experienced workplace designers and workplace strategists in high demand. New York’s ever-competitive hospitality industry and residential condo amenity offerings also means designers with strong experience are sought after. When it comes to the non-design roles, our business support team has worked successfully on several heavyweight financial director positions. Experienced business development and marketing staff at all levels are highly sought after, with demand for these roles currently outweighing supply. In a continuing trend, the changes to work visa policy have deterred firms from considering sponsorship for many international candidates. However, we have had ongoing success with international candidates already holding H-1b or O-1 visas. Australian citizens benefit from the straightforward E-3 visa, and the new USMCA deal thankfully reaffirms the TN visa available to Mexican and Canadian citizens. We have seen a steady increase in salary expectations across all levels in 2018 and in particular a noticeable spike in expectations amongst architects and designers with between three and seven years’ professional experience, which is perhaps a result of the wider trend of demand for talented staff outstripping availability. With the US unemployment rate at its lowest level in almost half a century, a booming US economy, and continued growth predicted in 2019, we expect to remain busy this coming year and are excited about what the future holds.

Experienced business development and marketing staff at all levels are highly sought after, with demand for these roles currently outweighing supply. Global Salary Guide 2019 | 13

The figures detailed above should be used as a guide and are based on salary only, exclusive of other benefits.

The architecture and design markets in California continue to thrive with new projects across the state. Focus is on improving transportation infrastructure, increasing housing stock, addressing rising homelessness, and delving into the architectural needs of emerging industries such as legalized recreational cannabis production and sales. This successful market has shifted hiring needs from design to delivery, which has brought a new set of challenges to the hiring process. The plethora of available jobs has created a candidate’s market, in which employers are forced to compete for what seems like a shrinking talent pool of technically capable mid-level architects. Some firms are discouraged by their lack of ability to retain employees in this enticing market and have considered new methods for identifying candidates who are not only skilled, but also willing to commit to long-term employment with their firm. For example, some firms have been looking at how temp-to-perm arrangements can help both firms and candidates learn more about each other before embarking on a longer-term investment. Some firms are also taking the time to self-reflect and be willing to revamp their benefits structure, implement more inclusive and diverse hiring practices, and empower employees with a path for true career growth within their firm structure.

In San Francisco and the Bay Area, as the region continues to become increasingly dominated by the tech industry, many architects are doing their best to engage with the community’s passion for sustainable design, commitment to historic preservation, and desperate need for solutions to affordability for working families and an ever-increasing homeless population. It was noted in a recent Bespoke survey that millennials are placing an increasing emphasis on firm culture, work-life balance, diversity, and opportunities for growth. The struggle for firms (and jobseekers) to stay afloat during the recession years has given way to several years of financial health within the architecture and design market. While previously the focus was on keeping projects, the focus this year may well be on attracting and retaining employees.

In Los Angeles, some exciting changes are creating opportunities for many architecture firms. While ranked among the busiest airports in the world, LAX has been labeled as having the worst transit options for travelers. Change is finally on the horizon, with a $1.6 billion LAX overhaul and $4.9 billion project to connect the airport with the Metro now underway. The Olympics are a decade away, but many people are looking at 2028 as a deadline to implement change and improvement, particularly in public transportation, public spaces and addressing homelessness.

While previously the focus was on keeping projects, the focus this year may well be on attracting and retaining employees.

Market Update Summary

Architecture

Dubai has remained very steady throughout the last year despite the hype and excitement of Dubai Expo. There hasn’t been a huge increase in salaries and developers are always more prominent and attractive for candidates due to their provision of additional benefits such as schooling — something which practices are yet to provide.

There has been less migration into the UAE, with expats choosing far east Asia as a preferred location with more job opportunities and better prospects. Candidates are becoming more knowledgeable about expat markets, looking wider than salary as a main driver. At Bespoke we have noticed more and more senior level job-seekers looking to relocate internationally on this basis.

The hotel sector has been quiet both in architecture and interiors, this is due to lack of confidence and investment in Dubai in particular, despite encouragement for Dubai Expo 2020. Although Qatar and Abu Dhabi still have notable projects on the horizon, large offices in Dubai have shrunk in size or moved talent back to Asia, Australia, the US or the UK, with clients still preferring design from the major hubs such as New York and London. Hiring needs have been specific around sector and we have seen an increasing number of strategic hires for practices who require talent with strengths in business development and design leadership. The request for local on-the-ground knowledge is paramount.

Generally, there is a bias for technically-minded individuals able to support the delivery of signature projects including stadia, hotels, residential, rail and aviation. Candidates will usually have several offers to consider, and these tend to be Revit-trained, highly design-led individuals. We have seen practices make redundancies across architecture and interiors. This is due to practices not winning work in the area, projects not going through to construction, and larger global practices dominating the market. The outlook for 2019 remains cautious but there is positivity across infrastructure, urban design and landscape. Huge development is starting to progress with masterplans for new cities across the region. Abu Dhabi has huge amounts of investment and there are whispers that Saudi Arabia will be the next market for practices to focus on.

Although Qatar and Abu Dhabi still have notable projects on the horizon, large offices in Dubai have shrunk in size or moved talent back to Asia, Australia, the US or the UK, with clients still preferring design from the major hubs such as New York and London.
