Patch Adams Reflection Essay

In Patch Adams, Robin Williams portrays a doctor who strives to "improve the quality of life." The movie is a perfect example of many cases of sacramental awareness and the sacrament of Annointing of the Sick. Patch encounters a "once–brilliant" man in a psychiatric clinic. Arthur Mendelson helps hunterThe first character Patch meets is Arthur Mendelson. Arthur influences Patch's ability to see through problems. In a Christ–like manner, we must see through and past the problems and look ahead toward the solution. Christ died for our sins by looking past the problem.

Patch also helps his roomate, Rudy, out. This brings on a revelation for Patch which lets him see through the scientific names of diseases. He ...show more content...

This parallels Annointing of the Sick After meeting his two close friends, Truman and Carin, Patch desires to reach out and help people, not to bury himself in his books. His friends quickly jump on the bandwagon and help him to carry out his theories.

The sacramental awareness of Patch's roomate is questionable until we find that he is genuinely good in the end. However, Dean Walcot is up until the end a foe of Patch's. He is concerned with the physical aspect of healing much more than the spiritual aspect of healing. In the old church, Annointing of the Sick was sometimes believed to be physical. The spiritual aspect of healing would later be brought back into effect rightfully. When Patch is treating patients in his clinic, he exhibits great sacramental awareness by simply admittin that we are a community that can help each other. He proclaims that everyone is both a doctor and a patient. Patch also nears the meaning of the sacrament of Annointing of the Sick. He heals people in a beautiful way. He helps people look inside and heal themselves. He lets people embrace death much like the sacrament does. His method, while not religious, is effectively the same as the essential aspects of our sacrament. Patch was a fantastic example of someone who vowed to live the images and messages that we believe. While he did not stamp the

The concept of race and racism has transformed over time and is seen through the eyes of everyone in our world. It unfortunately seems to be the norm for the public to not only assume an individual 's race and to separate them to be distant from one another, but to also pigeon hole every race in a restricted category. This has been going on for so long that we would expect everyone to view society this way, however that might not be the case for all citizens within the United States. Now the question is, where do we learn these ideas from? How do people have this thoughts ingrained in their brain? There are many definitions of race, but how they come about? Whether it is from relatives, media, or even from blatantly witnessing it around us, everyone has a different way of learning what race is.

When speaking with my mother, Clara Salas, a short, humble woman with red/brown hair and a smile that could light up a room, she had quite a bit to say on the matter. Throughout our interview I flooded her with questions on racial construction and how she has came to know what race meant and what it was. First on how see saw race and if these so called divisions within the community wherever in place. Speaking with a soft yet firm tone, she began, "From a young age I never saw a behavioral difference or divide within racial groups because from where I was, everyone from all different racial crowds were integrated." She said. I looked at my mother in awe as though this was not

In 1990, more than 1500 tourists visited Bhutan, and tourism was the largest source of foreign exchange. There are no railroads, but by 1990 there were about 2336 km of roads linking many parts of the country. (Karan, 224)

History

Not much is known of Bhutan's historical origins before the late 17th century. Although, Tibetan Buddhism was brought into Bhutan by the mid 16th century; monasteries dot the inner Himalayan valleys. Most of the 17th and 18th century Bhutan had an aggressive policy toward it's neighbors. This eventually brought them into conflict with the British East India Company in 1772. A series of civil wars plagued Bhutan during the late 19th century. A treaty in 1910 between Britain granted Bhutan internal autonomy and an annual subsidy. But the British still had control of the country's foreign relations. China's territorial claims helped strengthened Bhutan's relationship with India. This was followed by economic aid agreements, military assistance, and diplomatic representations. (Kaminsky, cd–rom)

The Importance Of Sibling Relationships

The Importance of Sibling Relationships

Everyone needs a support system, someone to build them up after they have been broken down, someone to piece them back together when they have been taken apart, someone to encourage them to follow their dreams and do the impossible, and, most importantly, someone to be there to support and accept them through anything and everything. This is where, not only family, but your siblings become very useful and necessary in your life; siblings can fulfill all of those necessities and more. However, circumstances may vary depending on the makeup of the family, most are fortunate enough to have one or more siblings, but others not so much. Those who are fortunate enough to have siblings are not typically put ...show more content...

Every older sibling has high hopes to be this amazing role model for their younger brother or sister, which also drives them to work that much harder to be that role model (Winn 1). Not only are older siblings seen to be responsible for the future of their younger siblings, but also are supposed to protect their younger siblings from the impossibles of the world. This is seen in the Hunger Games when Katniss stands up for her sister Prim against the reaping, "with one sweep of my arm I push her behind me. 'I volunteer!' I gasp. 'I volunteer as tribute!'" (Collins 51). Often older siblings are willing to risk everything to protect their younger sibling because they are scared for them, they are more scared of losing the relationship between them and their sibling then losing everything. Due to this perception of older siblings, there is a large bardon on the backs of the older siblings to, not only, be role models for their younger brothers and sisters, but to protect them for the sake of your relationship and love for them.

The concept of favoritism is defined as the practice of giving unfair preferential treatment to one person or group at the expense of another; this

My First Ramadan Experience

My First Ramadan Experience "Greetings! We inform you that the Ramadan moon sighting wait has ended and the first fast for the following countries will take place in a couple of hours...", exclaimed the newscaster. The news report was continuing to inform listeners of the differing dates for the start of the holy month. I questioned eagerly, "Mom, can I please fast?" I'm nine years old now. "Honey, fasting is a day–long commitment. Also, it is more than not eating or drinking anything." It took a long time for me to satisfy my mom; however, I was allowed to start my first fast. Furthermore, my first Ramadan experience taught me more than not eating or drinking for a religious value; in fact, it disclosed me to a book of principles to live by, makingfamily unity, patience and consistency, and respect and contribution a part of my individuality.

It was overwhelming for me to see the whole family together, crowded around the television, possessing the same amount of excitement. "The US will be starting their fast at the start of sunrise", stated the man. I had fallen asleep, listening to the news. Next thing I knew, I awoke to the sounds of my mom making our special breakfast specials, consisting of 'Halwa', 'Parathas', eggs, and tea; it was time for 'Sehri', the

Speech Outside of Class Extra Credit Assignment During my third–degree black belt test, I was tasked with completing many difficult challenges in order to prove that I was deserving of the promotion. One of these challenges was a speech about the Korean flag. For this speech, I had to stand outside of the building and give the speech in front of everyone. It was an interesting experience and one of the more difficult portions of my test.

When preparing for my speech I researched the Korean flag in depth. I wanted to understand the symbols and what they meant. While doing so I learned that the Korean flag symbolized much of thought, philosophy, and mysticism of the orient. The key thing I learned was that the circle on the front of the flag symbolizes the balance of two opposites. Through doing this I decided that my speech would be describing the meaning of every color and symbol on the flag. I also wanted to explain how these symbols and their meanings tied into Taekwondo. Human Rights And Social Work

Starting with Jane Adams in the early 20th century, human rights were at the forefront of her work with the Hull House which helped establish the social work profession as we know it (Healy, 2008). The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the values set and regulated by the NASW share a common theme focusing on, dignity, self–determination, and improving the quality of life for everyone. Social workers are on the forefront of advocating for, and creating social change, and justice (NASW, 2015). Social work constantly challenges racism, discrimination and the inhumane treatment of vulnerable people. Internationally the social work profession attempts to link vulnerable populations with basic needs like, food, healthcare, housing, and equality all which reflect article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (United Nations, 2014). Social workers wear many hats, and have established roles in many institutions like hospitals, schools, nursing homes, acting as liaisons between the establishments and individuals who seek their services (Reichert, 2007).

2. What social work practices might constrain human rights?

The Social work is a profession not only rewards merit, but there is also a monetary gain. The majority of qualified social workers are employed by local government agencies which can create a conflict of interest because of their obligation, and commitment to their employer. The government agencies have their own political and financial agenda that can be

Thesis Statement For Pride And Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice: Essay Outline Thesis statement, including map of development: In Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice," the author traces portrait of women's role during the Regency period: they were expected to get married, to be accomplished and to self–scarify. Topic Sentence #1: Marriage was crucial at the time, and women of the early Victorian age were expected to marry and to get their daughters married.

a.Argument: Marriage assured social security for both the women and the family. b.Example: When Lady Catherine tells Elizabeth that Darcy was supposed to marry her daughter: "The engagement between them is of a particular kind. From their infancy, they have been intended for each other. It was the favorite wish of his mother, as well as of her's. While I their cradles, we planned the union: and now, at the moment when the wishes of both sisters would be accomplished, in their marriage, to be prevented by a young woman of inferior birth, of no importance in the world, and wholly unallied to the family!" (Austen 335–336).

c.Explanation: Lady Catherine's reaction demonstrates the crucial importance of marriage in the society, but also for women. Demonstrates Lady Catherine's role to protect the high class and prestige of her descendants through marriage. For Elizabeth and her family, this union with the higher class assures them social security.

However one can not meditate without wisdom. This idea seems to say that the practices of the bhikkhu must include meditation and gaining wisdom. The Buddhist monks engage in these practices because it is the way of the Buddha. Within the text, it is very clear that the Buddha finds meditation of great importance. If not directly speaking about meditation, the Buddha speaks about having a disciplined mind. "It is good to restrain one's mind, uncontrollable, fast moving, and following its own desires as it is. A disciplined mind leads to happiness" (V. 35).

As well as having a disciplined mind, the mental state that the bhikkhu strives to cultivate is one that is at peace, developed, and guarded. "...the bhikkhu whose mind is at peace experiences a more than human joy..." (V. 373). Just the same, a mind should be guarded because a guarded mind brings happiness. "A wise man should guard his mind for it is very hard to keep track of, extremely subtle, and follows its own desires. A guarded mind brings happiness" (V. 36). Through cultivating the mind, the bhikkhu has certain effects on society and in turn society has certain obligations with respect to the bhikkhu. Because the bhikkhu leads a life without desire and hate, he becomes an example for society; showing what kusala is and what a person should strive to be. In return, it is up to society to make donations and offerings to keep the bhikkhu content.

He handles the situation with remarkably patient and wise attitude and says to his stepmother, "I gladly obey father's command ...Why, I would go even if you ordered it.". By doing this, he shows characteristics of great piety to his parents and the lack of desire to be a powerful and authoritative rich ruler, all while knowing that he is giving up his righteous turn to rule the kingdom since he is the oldest of the four sons of the king. Instead, he willingly goes off into exile – forest infested with evil spirits whom he battles with the power of good and defeats. As in most of the Eastern world, this example of respect being paid to elders, parents, authorities (no matter what one is commanded to do) is very important in one's 'faith'; and the fact that one successfully wards off evil, gives him/her the title of a cultural model hero, just as seen in Rama's case. Rama's casual attitude about going off into the forest for fourteen years also shows his asceticism – the will to give up his material, emotional and physical attachments. His peaceful and patient attitude towards his life is vivid due to his enduring wisdom. For he goes beyond the material and physical world

Hansberry herself debated if the ending to A Raisin in the Sun was truly an optimistic outcome, but the conclusion of the play is indeed a favorable one because Mama Lena was able to teach her family, through their trials, postponed dreams, and ambitions, how to persevere, putting the Youngers in a much better position than the were in when the play opened. Mama Lena always held on to a shred of hope, symbolized by the small plant that grew well despite the poor conditions. The new house was more than an object to Mama Lena. It symbolized how the Younger family had finally surpassed challenges and become a loving family, filled with hope for the future. Breakdancing

The history of choreography is also very important Any choreography that seems new, fresh and different is usually a variation of something that has been done before. As long as men and women have lived upon this earth, they have danced. The art of movement is among the oldest of the arts.

So for eight months I've been learning the skills of hip hop and breakdancing by going to at a hip hop club at every week where I learned the basic skills of breaking like how to top–rock and six–step.
