The hilarious play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare, tells the twisted love story of four Athenians who are caught between love and lust. The main characters: Hermia, Helena, Lysander, and Demetrius are in a 'love square'. Hermia and Lysander are true love enthusiasts, and love each other greatly. Demetrius is in love with Hermia, and Helena, Hermia's best friend, is deeply and madly in love with Demetrius. Hermia and Lysander try to elope in the woods because Egeus, Hermia's father, disapproves of Lysander. Helena, hearing about their plans, tells Demetrius, and all four of them end up in the woods where Lysander's quotation, "The course of true love never did run smooth"(28), becomes extremely evident due to several...show more content... This time he places it on the right person's eyes, though both Demetrius and Lysander are in love with Helena, so Lysander and Hermias' true love is still mixed up. When Puck finally places the love potion on Lysander's eyes once again, he falls back in love with Hermia. Though their true love took a few turns, it finally ended up being okay. Therefore, Lysander's quote "the course of true love never did run smooth,"(28) occurs for them. In Athens, women had very little rights. Womens fathers were the ones who got to choose whom they married, and that caused trouble for the lovers. Hermia's father, Egeus, strongly believed in this rule. At the beginning, Egeus decides that he wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, which is good for Demetrius but bad for Hermia. Hermia, daringly refuses her father's wishes, so they seek the help of Theseus, the Duke of Athens. Theseus listens to their situation, and being the authority in the situation, tells Hermia: "Either to die the death, or to abjure for the society of men. Therefore, fair Hermia,... if you yield not to your father's choice, you can endure the livery of a nun..."(24). This shows how authority, in this case the law, gets in the way of "the course of true love..."(28). Egeus's decision to have Hermia marry Demetrius does not only affect Hermia but also affects Helena. When Hermia's father chooses Demetris to be her

In the play, we asked ourselves, does true love ever run smooth? The answer to this was no. Shakespeare demonstrates throughout his play the turmoils and conflicts that occur between lovers. In each of the main acts, there is a conflict of love occuring, whether unrequited love, love that has been meddled with, or embarrassing love. Shakespeare uses these different conflicts to show multiple different sides to romance and to demonstrate how life isn't a straight, paved road, but it can be turbulent. Even though the story ends on a high note, one must not forget the troubles that occurred in order for the protagonists to get to this point. In his play, Shakespeare tries to prove that true love never runs smooth by portraying a story where a happy ending only occurs after a long and confusing conflict between not just the lovers, but others around Get more content

The Road To Love "O, take the sense, sweet, of my innocence! Love takes the meaning in love's conference." Lysander's quote, "The course of true love never did run smooth," is proven throughout the play as three couples face challenges and hardships as time goes on, that no love is easy and that anyone would do anything they can to keep the love they have. In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," there are many examples of rough love, as seen with Hermia and Lysander when Lysander stops loving Hermia, when Helena love Demetrius but he does not love her back and with Titania and Oberon, as they argue over the changeling boy. Lysander's quote about true love is saying that no love is easy and there will always be challenges and bumps in the road. Furthermore, Helena hoped to be alone with Demetrius in hopes of convincing him to love her again, "The more you beat me I will fawn on you. True Love in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream I have been studying A Midsummer Night's Dream and exploring how the characters within this play deal with love and the consequences resulting from falling in love. I will be answering the question asked by providing quotes and examples of Shakespeare's technique in showing that 'The course of true love never did run smooth' as well as providing answers as to why Shakespeare made this the case in the play. Shakespeare was born on the 23rd April, in an English town called Stratford–Upon–Avon in the year 1564. He lived for 52 years, and in this time he wrote over 100 plays and sonnets, including 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Macbeth' and...show more content...

This is a good way of creating sympathy for the character as most people have experienced unrequited love at some point in their lives, even if it wasn't in quite the same way as Helena and Demetrius. There are another set of lovers in the play – Oberon and Titania– and again, another technique used to portray a different kind of love. This time it seems to be love gone sour, as Titania and Oberon are technically married but are always apart and trying to avoid each other. Before we actually meet the couple, we see one of Titania's fairies and Oberon's jester Puck have a quick conversation. "The King doth keep his revels here tonight. Take heed the Queen come not within his sight," Here, Shakespeare is trying to give us a little bit of background information on the couple by telling us that the King and Queen must not meet on the Oberon's instruction. Basically, in this part of Puck's speech, he is letting us know that the fairy King and Queen do not get on and this is another one of the techniques Shakespeare uses to show that love isn't always perfect – perhaps even telling us that arranged marriages don't work. Even Titania's fairies seem to have been trained to hate anything related to Oberon when the Fairy exclaims 'you

In William Shakespeare's, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Lysander says "The course of true love never did run smooth"(I.i.134). This is a very significant quotation which plays an important role throughout this play. Shakespeare portrays three different couples whose love lives take them on many eventful and unexpected turns. Truelove is not a plain and easy path, it has many difficulties and obstacles along the way. Lysander's quote about love stays true as various couples experience many troubles and uncertainties throughout their relationships . First of all, Helena and Demetrius are two lovers who have a very complicated love life. Helena is a young woman who falls in love with Demetrius and cares about nothing more than indulging in his presence. Helena follows Demitrius into the woods one day and conveys her love by stating that "the more you beat me, I will fawn on you" (II.i.205). Helena wants to be with the man she loves more than anything; she is ready to take any risk just to see his face and be next to him. However Demetrius despises Helena. He acts ill–natured towards her and makes it very clear that she means nothing to him. Demetrius tells Helena about his hatred towards her and states "for I am sick when I look on thee" (II.i.213). He wants Helena to know how much he loathes her and how he would never want anything to do with her. Notwithstanding their original relationship, Demetrius begins to fall in love Helena and starts seeing her in a new vision as the play progresses. Demetrius receives a spell which makes him fall deeply in love with Helena and praise her. However, even after the spell stops being effective, Demetrius develops a desire to be with Helena and even marry her. The relationship between Demetrius and Helena has many erratic times and misunderstandings until the couple finally begins to truly love each other. The love that Lysander and Hermia share is very unlike the relationship between Helena and Demetrius. Lysander and Hermia have loved each other for a very long period of time and have dreamed of getting married. However, Hermia's father, Egeus, disapproves of this couple. Hermia and Lysander's love for each other is tested when Egeus tries to shatter their relationship

The path to true love is filled with difficulties and obstacles from society, religion, or culture. The idea behind the proverb plays a central role in constructing the plot of the story as seen with the relationships, especially those of Bingley and Jane, and Darcy and Elizabeth. Jane's and Bingley's relationship also depicts the idiom "the course of true love never did run smooth." Jane Bennet and Charles Bingley meet and fall in love at a dance in Meryton. Their mutual attraction is evident to everyone, especially Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley's sisters who disapprove of Jane's social disadvantage. Jane and Mr. Bingley are considered the potential couple that will eventually marry. Elizabeth is happy and wants her sister to be happily married; therefore, she is happy at the thought of a marriage between Bingley and Jane. In the eyes of Elizabeth, this is would be the marriage of true affection. However, as the idiom indicates, one of the obstacles that makes the road to love for Jane and Bingley not smooth is the interference by his family. Bingley's sisters try to convince Bingley not to marry Jane. If he is to marry, he should marry for money, connections, and pride (Schaefer 17). These are the same sentiments voiced by Darcy who is also concerned with social status. When Elizabeth joins Jane to keep her company at Netherfield, the Bingley sisters deride them for their country girls' customs, lifestyle, and relations. Darcy optimistically indicates that these relations, "must very materially lessen their chance of marrying men of any consideration in the world" (Austen 37). The Bingley sisters try everything to prevent the relationship as they also interfere with the relationship

"The course of true love never did run smooth." (Act I, Scene I) (include hook and bridge)William Shakespeare's well–known play, A Midsummer Night's Dream talks about love and its obstacles. The play revolves around four young Athenian lovers' quarrel in an enchanted forest. It also involves Theseus; the Duke of Athens who is planning to have a big wedding. Among the already mentioned characters are a fairy king and a fairy queen who fight over an Indian changeling. At the beginning of the play, no one likes her. It was as if she wasn't even there. If Oberon didn't order Puck to put the magical love juice on the men, she would have been forever lonely. But once the men fell in love with her, Hermia was erased from the men's world. They were fully unto Helena. "I say I love thee more than he can do. / If thou say so, withdraw and prove it too. / Quick, come." (A Midsummer Night's Dream III.ii.:254–256) This small passage shows Demetrius and Lysander fighting for Helena's love. Demetrius tells Lysander that he loves her more than him, but Lysander wants to have a duel to see whose love is stronger towards Helena. Helena thought they were mocking here due to the fact that they never loved her before. This can relate to the quote "The course of true love never did run smooth" (A Midsummer Night's Dream I.i.:137) because it shows that even though she wanted a normal relationship, life made her relationship challenging. This quote will be additionally clarified in Oberon's relationship with

William Shakespeare once said, "The course of true love never did run smooth." In the drama Romeo and Juliet they were star crossed lovers which means that they are destined to never be together. Throughout the drama you can see that their love didn't run smooth. In the matter of four days, Romeo and Juliet were married, Romeo was banished, and they both killed themselves. Throughout the whole drama, the Nurse was always there for Juliet. Juliet and the Nurse have two kinds of love. They have storge and philia love. Philia is friend love and storge is family love. The Nurse raised Juliet from a baby. In that time the richer women would do nothing and they would have servants and nurses to do everything for them. In the scene III Act I the Nurse talked about how she remembers when Juliet was born and how she was the prettiest baby she had every nursed. She also talked about how she thinks that Juliet is too young to start talking about marriage even though Lady Capulet was married around the same age as juliet. She states "Even or odd, of all days in the year,Come Lammas–eve at night shall she be fourteen...On Lammas–eve at night shall she be fourteen;...'Tis since the earthquake now eleven years; And she was weaned, I never shall forget it,..." Love Run Smooth

"The course of true love never did run smooth," comments Lysander of love's complications in an exchange with Hermia (Shakespeare I.i.136). Although the play A Midsummer Night's Dream certainly deals with the difficulty of romance, it is not considered a true love story like Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare, as he unfolds the story, intentionally distances the audience from the emotions of the characters so he can caricature the anguish and burdens endured by the lovers. Through his masterful use of figurative language, Shakespeare examines the theme of the capricious and irrational nature of love. As the play opens, Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, his fiancГ©e discuss their upcoming wedding. With the introduction of Theseus and Hippolyta, Shakespeare presents the backdrop for the multi–faceted love relationships which take place in the play. In an effort to celebrate the occasion with "pomp, triumph and reveling", (Shakespeare I.i.20) Theseus instructs Philostrate, Master of the Revels, to "stir up the Athenian youth to merriments" (Shakespeare I.i.13) as well as to provide entertaining distractions for him and Hippolyta until their wedding. These simple, innocent instructions for merriment and entertainment set the stage for Shakespeare to intricately weave the young lovers, the fairies and the rustics into the story. Introducing the main conflict, Egeus, an Athenian citizen seeking the wise counsel of Theseus, arrives. Egeus' complaint is against his daughter, who Get more content

One would argue for the quote when Lysander says, "The course of true love never did run smooth." This can be argued for with the large abundance of examples that were revealed throughout the play, like when Lysander and Hermia's flame of love was trying to be extinguished by Egeus, Hermia's father. Egeus desires for Hermia to wed Demetrius, but another aimlessly chases Demetrius with the results ending in scorn, that is Helena. This overly complicated love story led them to the magical forest where there already be two lovers whom love each other, though, they constantly feud, the lovers are Oberon and Titania. In A Midsummer's Night Dream, Lysander says, "The course of true love never did run smooth," and this is true because Lysander and Hermia are not allowed to love, Helena aimlessly chases Demetrius with no results, and though Titania and Oberon are in love, they constantly feud.

Within the play, 'A Midsummer Nights Dream', the importance of courtship and marriage is indicated, as is that of love and marriage. One of the ideas in the play is that there is a significant difference between 'doting' and 'loving', something like the distinction between fancying someone and loving them. The play also presents love as a kind of madness and way of looking at someone and admiring them as if they where magic. Love is often presented as a good thing, yet in the play 'love and reason keep little company together'. The variety of relationships provides parallels and ...show more content...

Another example of their love not going to plan and not running smooth is what we would portray as 'Fake love'. This is shown between Titania and Bottom, when Oberon gives Titania a magical love potion which will make her fall in love with the next person she sees, and in this case is the transformed version on Bottom, when he has acquired an ass' head.

'On the first view to say, To swear, I love thee', showing how quickly she has fallen in love with him, but because she does not actually feel this way, it is a demonstration of 'Fake love'.

This also occurs for the four lovers when Lysander and Demetrius have had the juice in their eye and both lovers now fight over Helena, instead of Hermia. Helena is convinced that her two suitors are mocking her as neither loved her originally. 'I pray you, though you mock me gentlemen'. The course of love taken here shows how it was mislead and went wrong, and demonstrates how love does not run at all 'smooth' within the play.

In Shakespeare's work 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' Lysander says that the course of true love never runs smooth. He says this because true love is usually hard to find. Lysander and Hermia are trying to stay together through the tough times they are going through. Egeus is forcing Hermia to marry someone she does not want to wed. Three examples of why the course of true love is hard to find is that there will always be someone trying to change someone's feelings, true love is usually blind, and there will always be sacrifice. There will always be someone trying to change someone's feelings on who they love. Hermia's father, Egeus, wants her to marry Demetrius, someone who he picked out, and not Lysander who is the one she is in love with. Hermia then argues that she wants to marry Lysander. Hermia and Lysander then come up with a plan to run away into the woods. Demetrius is actually in love with the person he is forced to marry. He told Hermis that the title of husband would be his. He also told Helena to quit following him in the woods while he was trying to look for Hermia. Theme Of True Love Never Does Run Smooth

The course of true love never does run smooth. This is one theme in the amazing play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. This play is about a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families that disrupts the city of Verona. On the Montague's side, there is Sir and Lady Montague, their son Romeo, and Romeo's cousin, Mercutio. On the Capulets side there is Sir and Lady Capulet, their daughter Juliet, Juliet's nanny the nurse, Juliet's tempered cousin Tybalt, and the man who wants to marry Juliet, Paris. The feud between the two families causes tragic results for Romeo and Juliet. Revenge, love, and a secret marriage forces the two young lovers to commit suicide in despair. One theme in the play is showed by the two families having a feud, when Romeo gets vanished from Verona, and at the end when Romeo and Juliet kill themselves. ...show more content...

The rival of the two families shows the theme of the play because the rival keeps Romeo and Juliet from seeing each other. This problem that Romeo and Juliet have is bad, but, throughout the play there are more problems that are worse than this. Either way this problem Romeo and Juliet have still proves one theme of this play, the course of true love never does run smooth. The second example that shows one theme of this play happens when Romeo gets vanished from Verona after killing Tybalt. Romeo kills Tybalt because Tybalt kills Romeo's cousin Mercutio after fighting and stabbing him under Romeo's arm. The prince then comes and vanishes Romeo from Verona. The banishment of Romeo affected his relationship with Juliet and made it worse than it already was. This example shows one theme by Juliet and Romeo not being able to show their love for each other. This proves that the course of true love never does run
