How to approach your school
Step 1: Arrange a time to talk to your Head Teacher or the person in charge of teacher recruitment (like a deputy or ITT coordinator) about your wish to gain QTS through professional development.
Step 2: Show your commitment to staying at your school and continuing to support your students.
Step 3: Explain the benefits of the Teacher Apprenticeship for both you and your school. Some Suggested benefits:
Funding: Government funding through the Apprenticeship Levy covers training and assessment costs, unlike the typical salaried ITT route. Mentor grants from the Department for Education (DfE) are also available, and your pay can increase on the unqualified teacher pay scale.
School Benefits: Increases the number of trained teachers, improves teaching quality, and retains current support staff by offering professional development Qualified teachers can also develop mentorship skills with available funding.
Important Notes:
Apprenticeship Levy: Many schools don't realise they are paying into this fund, which can only be used for apprenticeships. If not used, the money goes back to the government.
Unqualified Teacher Pay Scale: The school budget covers this, not the apprenticeship levy.
Available Funding:
Apprenticeship Levy: Fully funds the apprenticeship route.
Mentor Grant: Covers the cost of mentoring each trainee teacher.
