Welcome... NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE The aim of the monthly Life in brackley Magazine is to support businesses in order that the local community can flourish.
November’s here, with its glorious palette of crunchy fallen leaves, sharp frosts hinting that winter is just around the corner, and Remembrance Sunday to remind us all how much we owe to those who gave their lives for our country. Bonfire night brings excitement and community spirit at firework displays, whilst we’re looking towards Christmas and planning fabulous festivities without breaking the bank. Whatever you’re up to this month, stay cosy!

Cllr Blake Stimpson said when asked about this award, “I’m delighted and humbled to have received this award. It has truly been a privilege to work with, and for the children and residents of Brackley, a town I love, for so many years”. Cllr. Chris Cartmell – Brackley Town Mayor said “I can’t think of a more deserving person in Brackley to have been given this award. On behalf of the Town Council and the residents, I would like to thank my dear friend Blake Stimpson for all the hard work he has put in over the many years for the community. Especially for his time at Southfield Primary School and all the hundreds, no thousands of children who were under his care and guidance over the many years. From them, well done Mr. Stimpson”.

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these
values have been held for over 13 years. Since buying the local franchise in 2006 they have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community whilst introducing their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross into the family business along with Dan, Mark & Jo as demand for their service has grown.

H ave yo u u p d a t e d yo u r w i l l l a t e ly ? Good! You have set up a will to safeguard your loved ones, but even after you’ve signed your name, life events and circumstances will continue to change around you. As a rule of thumb, many solicitors advise that wills should be reviewed and updated every three to five years to remain relevant. When should I update my will? There have been changes to family members and relationships Births, deaths, marriages and divorces should trigger a need to update a will. Always ensure that the correct people are named on your most current will and people whom you no longer want to include in your will are taken off. Updating your will is especially important if you are remarrying as your previous will is automatically invalidated. You’ve bought a home or business Buying a home or business adds to your asset
portfolio, which is included in your estate upon your death. Having a will in place that states how these assets are to be distributed can help with effective tax planning. There have been changes to tax laws From time to time, new tax and probate laws are brought in by governing bodies. It is good practice to check if any of these new laws affect your estate and management thereof. Additionally, if you move to a new country, certain laws can impact differently. For more information about creating a will or updating an existing will, please contact Julia Routen, Solicitor at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204012 or email jrouten@se-law.co.uk.

Festive Favourite Now it’s November, it’s safe to say that most of us are thinking ahead to Christmas – planning for presents, decorations and turkey – and quite possibly wondering how much it’s all going to cost! It’s so easy to overspend, when you’ve everyone to buy for, but with our top tips, you’ll save money, shop smarter and make sure your credit card feels much less battered in the New Year! 1. Don’t impulse buy! Choose an item and then shop around using price comparison sites, best deals websites and auction sites to see if you can get it cheaper. 2. Super savings – don’t forget to check for discount vouchers before buying

anything online! There are plenty of sites where members can post deals and discount codes for others to use – saving you as much as 20% on your shopping. 3. Click through cashback – some banks and credit cards let you opt in to get cashback at featured retailers, on other sites you sign up and then click through before buying. Either way, you’ll get anything upwards of 1% of your total spend back in a few weeks or months’ time, without any effort at all. 4. Presents don’t have to be new! Antique or vintage items are every bit as good, if they’re exactly what the

es – on a budget! recipient would like. Online auction sites, social media selling pages or local car boots, markets or craft fairs are great places to look for quirky and unique items at a great price. 5. Set a budget! If you’ve lots of people to buy for, it helps if you all agree on a budget. Shopping around for the perfect gift for under a tenner means that a lot more thought has to go into each present – making each gift that little bit more personal.
full of presents on Christmas morning, so why not agree that everyone gets just one great gift, by drawing names at random? Set a higher budget than you’d usually allocate per person, but save a fortune because each of you just buys the one gift – saving time, money and potential waste into the bargain.

NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART MEDICA
Jobs on offer at new Brackley Sainsbury’s
Around 100 jobs are available at Sainsbury’s newest supermarket, with interviews for positions due to take place later this month. The 20,000 sq ft supermarket site, that also includes an Argos store inside the store, petrol station and car parking for 250, is scheduled to open to customers by Christmas this year. The vacant positions, including for Trading Support Manager, Trading Assistant, Service Assistant and GM and Clothing Assistant require no prior retail experience with all training provided for successful applicants. There are also Baker positions available for those with a passion for food. Previous bakery experience is also not required with a training and support available for the right applicants. Paul Dyer, Sainsbury’s Brackley Store Manager said: “We’re looking for people with a friendly personality and great attitude to join our Winning Team. Sainsbury’s is a great place to work and you’ll be supported to provide the best possible shopping experience to our customers. This store will be the newest Sainsbury’s supermarket in the country and if you thrive on providing great customer service then I look forward to hearing from you.” Cllr. Chris Cartmell, Brackley Town Mayor said: “This is excellent news at this moment in time; local jobs for local people, giving Brackley a real boost to its economy. This new supermarket will give the community more shopping choice of not only normal foodstuffs, but also clothes and an Argos collection point. We thank Sainsbury’s for working hard to get this store open in time for Christmas shopping.” Job interviews will take place at the Brackley Town Hall from Wednesday 14 October – Sunday 25 October 2020. For further information and position descriptions please visit: https://sainsburys. jobs/ Applicants are encouraged to apply online, though for any questions please email recruit. newstores@sainsburys.co.uk 22
A new state-of-the art medical centre in Brackley is set to welcome its first patients later next month (November). Brackley Medical Centre and Community Hospital on Wellington Road will include a GP surgery featuring 16 consulting and treatment rooms and a dedicated urgent care unit. The building will also house a new high-tech pharmacy, located adjacent to the reception area, with a state of the art automated robot picking system, and two consulting rooms. Thanks to a partnership with the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, Brackley Community Hospital 2020 Trust and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, facilities will include an X-Ray department, specialist clinics, physiotherapy and a well-being hub. Intermediate care beds … all with en-suite facilities … will be available on the top floor. Dr Philip Stevens, one of eight GP partners at Brackley Medical Centre, said: “The opening of this new medical facility is very exciting. We have been planning for this day for a very long time and are delighted that it is nearly here. “The new centre will enable us to dramatically expand the range of services and care available for the people of

Brackley and neighbouring villages in South Northants and on the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire borders. “The facilities will be second to none and we have to give thanks to the Brackley Community Hospital 2020 Trust which has so far raised more than £172,799 to finance community assets including a
high-spec X-ray machine (the charity is funding the additional spend required to upgrade from the basic machine provided by the NHS) and various specialist features in the hospital rooms to enhance patient stay and aid recovery. Continual fundraising is on-going to support the introduction of further services.” Provisional go-ahead for a new Brackley Medical Centre and Community Hospital was approved by the NHS Northamptonshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in 2009, following which a core committee -involving GPs, CCG members, Community Healthcare Trust representatives, trustees

AL CENTRE TO OPEN NEXT MONTH of the Brackley Cottage Hospital and representatives of Town, District and County Councils -- was formed to take matters forward. The project has also been fully supported by South Northamptonshire MP Andrea Leadsom. Building work on the 4,200 sq m site began in earnest in January 2019 with
the hope of opening during the summer of 2020. However, delays due to Covid-19, caused the opening to be put back to November 2020. “The Coronavirus Pandemic has obviously delayed things,” said Dr Stevens. “Not only did we have a time when our contractors were unable to work on the site, but we also lost some of our supplies … the original flooring that was due to be delivered for the community hospital, for example, was re-directed to be used in the London Nightingale. That said, the contractors, Wildgoose Construction, have done an amazing job and I would like to pay tribute to site manager Richard
Williams who has done his utmost to keep things as on track as possible.” Currently, Brackley Medical Centre GP Practice operates from two sites on the Halse Road … Washington House Surgery and Brackley Health Centre. In addition to the eight GP partners the practice employs two further GPs, two registrars, 11 nurses and health care assistants and a host of support staff, all of whom will be relocating to the new site. All of the surgery’s existing patients will automatically be registered at the new centre which will also be taking on new registrations. Community facilities at the new site will be available to all local residents and will provide choice for patients from surrounding areas to receive treatment. The initial opening of the new building in November will see the launch of the new GP practice, Lowick Pharmacy and the community services. There will be a phased opening of new elements not currently provided, including the Xray department and intermediate care beds, over the following weeks. • Patients already registered with Brackley Medical Centre will be getting a sneak preview of the new site during October when Brackley Medical Centre will be operating ‘drive-through’ Flu Clinics from the centre’s new 130-space
car park. Explained Brackley Medical Centre Head nurse Jane Wilkinson: “Normally our waiting rooms are packed during flu clinics as we try to ensure that as many of our eligible patients as possible are vaccinated. However, due

November is a funny month... November is a funny month. Most of the impending jobs tend to be about preparing for an apocalypse that is the winter season. It is like the whole season is a threat to your garden and its contents. Put up grease bands! Collect your leaves so they don’t smother everything! Prune your roses

so they don’t get rocked! Protect tender things from frost! Protect newly planted bulbs from rodents! Not even the long range weather forecasters know what sort of winter we will have but the reality is that a benign, quiet, cool, bright, rodent-free winter is very unlikely and it probably is wise to take precautions. However, there are lots of other, more constructive and, dare I say, fun things you can do at this time of year. Wreath making has been popular in recent years but wreaths aren’t just for Christmas! An autumn interest wreath decorated with small squashes or pampas flowers will give your front door some glamour well ahead of Rudolph’s visit. Planting spring bulbs or winter containers to be full of texture and contrasting forms gets the future looking brighter. The bare root season starts now and so is a fabulous time of year to get some great-value trees and shrubs in the ground. The warm soil will help the roots establish. Planting a tree is about as joyful and optimistic as gardening gets and is very addictive.

Fine range of great plants Many people have enjoyed growing their own food this year, so continue that by planting a fruit tree. An apple cannot be beaten, but remember they need a pollination partner to set fruit so encourage neighbours to get another variety that flowers at the same time. Perhaps consider a self-fertile plum or for something a bit different, a quince is fantastic. Gorgeous flowers, beautiful green furry leaves and the fruit... stewed or baked it is aromatic and rare. If fruit trees aren’t your thing then so many trees can brighten up your garden through winter. Deciduous trees may lose their leaves but interest can come from the bark. White stems of himalayan birches or Prunus serrula with its shiny mahogany peeling bark look beautiful through winter. Acer Sango-kaku has bright red bark and is one of the finest Japanese maples for foliage and, in my garden at least, more wind tolerant than others once established. Enjoy your garden activities this month and keep an eye on the forecast, so on a nice day the chores become fun.

Games versis York City
Brackley Town Football Club... w w w.b rac k le y to wn fc .com
Despite the health emergency the football season has kicked off for National League North Brackley Town. The delayed start means more midweek games to fit in and a later finish to the season but the action is underway! It started with an FA Cup tie that Saints successfully came through before a bye in the next round as Kettering Town were forced to withdraw due to positive Covid tests in their camp. The FA Cup is not only a prestigious competition that always brings added excitement but in this season of all seasons it is an invaluable source of income. The FA have halved the prize money this time around but the 26
prize-money for the winners of each round still adds up to a life-line as clubs at Brackley’s level continue to have to play behind closed doors. In the league, the start was disrupted by injuries to key players but at league title favourites York City Kevin Wilkin’s side returned to form. A well organised and determined performance got the season back on track. We used to say “nothing is won in August”. Now we say “nothing is won in October”! Everybody continues to hold their breath as the virus increases because one single positive test can rule the team out of a cup competition completely or
force the postponement of league games and a fixture pile-up later in the year. Many believe the season will not be finished as the winter months hit but as the old saying goes, we can only take one game at a time. Taking each game at a time and enjoying each fixture to its fullest is all that supporters can do in the current difficult circumstances. With games likely to continue behind closed doors for some time, the club is live streaming matches. These can be accessed through the club website. www.brackleytownfc.co.uk
