Towcester isn’t known for its association with the sea, but through your local scuba diving club, Towcester has been put on the map. The British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC), the biggest diving club in the world, has just awarded the South Northants b r a n c h (SNBSAC), based in Towcester, 3rd place in its international Club of the Year awards in recognition of its success in training, it’s active diving programme and its overall commitment to the sport. And for the second year running one of its members has been given a welldeserved Volunteer of the Year award.

How can I get involved? …SNBSAC puts great importance on you enjoying your course - the BSAC way! All our instructors are highly qualified to teach scuba diving and do so not as a salaried profession, clocking off at 5:30pm, but as enthusiasts often giving up weekends and evenings to ensure the highest standard of tuition. We don't have a rigid course structure - if you miss a session there is always someone happy to go through what you missed (normally in return for a consideration at the bar). So whether you're a complete beginner, you've tried diving on holiday, or you've already qualified with another diving organisation, and whether you are young enough to still be at school or old enough to have a free bus pass, SNBSAC has the perfect solution for you to either start or continue your enjoyment of the sport.

We are based in Towcester and carry out weekly training/taster sessions at the Towcester Leisure Centre. We are a very active club and have around 50 members with ages ranging from 15 to the age of… well let’s say mature!! We own 2 boats (RIBS) which are used regularly during the diving season to explore the UK coastline. What do we get out of Scuba diving? …Well it gives the feeling of weightlessness and freedom in the water which can be an exhilarating experience. Whether it be exploring World War II wrecks in Scotland, playing with seals in the North West of England, gathering scallops for supper along the South Coast, diving with Manta Rays in the Galapagos Islands, or really finding Nemo amongst the breathand taking reefs marine life in the Red Sea, SNBSAC members have done it all …..and so could you! So what's stopping you? We can give you some first-hand experience of the sport, before you go on your holidays. Try-divers are always invited to the pub after the session to 'debrief'. We meet every Monday from 9pm at the Conservative Club in Towcester for a social drink and chat. CONT page 7... SNBSAC has access to the pool at Towcester Leisure Centre on Monday evenings from 8-9pm. Most weeks there are try-dives going on for people who want to give it a go. Some go on to complete a course and become active members of the club and some just want a taste of the experience. There is no obligation to complete a diving course just by coming for a try-dive. A try-dive lasts about one hour, during which time you'll learn all about the scuba unit, underwater conduct, finning, breathing - and you'll get almost an hour underwater.

Thanks to local grant funding we can offer try dive events for youth organisations or for corporate events where your group will have the sole use of the pool and access to all the equipment and instruction required to make a fun evening. We have no (reasonable) minimum age for a try-dive, all we ask is that you are a confident swimmer. There is a minimum age of 14 for an actual BSAC diving course. PLENTY OF REASONS TO FOSTER TEENAGERS Northamptonshire County Council is appealing for people who can foster vulnerable teenagers. There are currently 265 children over the age of 10 who are looked after by the county council.The county council wants to recruit 45 new foster carers. The more foster carers the county council has in Northamptonshire, the more it can place these children closer to school, family and friends.

“By giving these children a home in your family and helping them make important decision in their life you’ll be making a huge difference to their future and in return, you’ll have a hugely rewarding career.” Children and young people come into the county council’s care for a variety of reasons, but it is largely because the county council suspects the children are being neglected or abused and remove them from their family for their own safety. They can stay in foster care for a short period of time or may need a permanent placement where they can stay until they are 18 and beyond. The county council has many more reasons why people should foster – they’ll get an allowance, support from the county council’s dedicated fostering team as well as a full training package.

So what do you do when you return home from an outing and you resemble a well-done lobster bake? Try one of these time-tested home remedies…and give yourself a chance to heal. 1 Apply vinegar (or a half-water, half-vinegar solution) with a spray bottle or dab on with a towel. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event on Sunday June 5th will be the ninth annual and will be run on the High Street with soapboxes beginning timed runs from 2.00pm onwards. It is open to two classes, under 15 years of age and adults 15 and over. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for the fastest three in each class and also The Lord Mayor will judge all soapboxes prior to the event and award a prize for the best turned out cart. The soapbox derby is a family event and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great afternoon.

Dancing in the Market Place, Brackley at 5.30a.m. (yes, that does say a.m!), the Brackley Morris Men will be continuing a true Brackley tradition. After playing music, jingling bells, clashing sticks and occasionally stopping for a little warming tipple in the Market Square, the dancers will dance at various locations marking the old town boundaries - ‘The Bounds of Brackley’. Finally they will head to St. Peter’s Church to remember the actions of the Brackley Morris Men in 1623, who then presented a solid silver Paten. BROADBAND SPEED NEWS UPDATE In recent news regarding broadband speeds, BT have been rolling out a new upgrade on many telephone exchanges in Brackley which is now completed. This upgrade still has limited services but should be fully effective by end of April, start of May. BT has informed us they are contacting their customers to enable the new upgrade. Prior to this upgrade, supported speeds were 2 to 6meg broadband regardless the distance from the Brackley telephone exchange. New supported speeds can reach 10 to 17MB, and as regards to distance, this can adjust to speeds at time of day. If you have not been contacted by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) I would suggest to call them and inform your local exchange has been upgraded. BRACKLEY WINE FESTIVAL The Brackley Wine Festival is back for its second year! The 2011 event will take place in the Town Hall on Saturday 28th May, between 12 noon and 6pm. Organised by Brackley Rotary Club, the Brackley Wine Festival is an opportunity for wine lovers to taste and buy wine from merchants who stock a huge range of special wines from around the world. The festival is a fundraising event with proceeds from the £5 entrance fee supporting local youth projects. Garden sheds are particularly popular targets for thieves during milder weather due to the high value of their contents and the low level of security usually found on them. There are several ways to make your shed and garden as secure as they can be: · Place your garden gate as near to the front of your house as possible · Install external lights. However, do be prepared to continue to water regularly any new plantings until they are established or until nature takes over!

Dead And Gone So many plants have been killed or damaged by the severe and prolonged frost before Christmas. In many cases the roots have been killed which is only now showing itself in the death of the whole plant. If there is no sign of life then it is time to replace these plants. To choose the same type may seem crazy but the chances of a repeat of the exceptional weather is, say, 1 in 20? I think that is a gamble worth taking, but you can always move vulnerable potted specimens into protection during the worst spells.

The Garden in May Looking Good There are so many plants coming into bloom. To choose just two: Geranium psilostemmon has dainty purplish cranesbill flowers in early summer. They will grow to a height of around 90cm, and will add colour and movement to a border, in sun or light shade. Campanula poscharskyana has striking blue flowers above small green leaves. This useful evergreen will cover the ground and is fully hardy. Kitchen Garden At this time of year, there are extra jobs that are vital in the vegetable plot. Protect carrots from carrot fly using fleece. Drape it over or form a vertical frame to surround them. Remove runners from strawberries.Put straw or mats down to protect the new fruit. Congested raspberry canes can be thinned out to allow better air circulation and healthier plants.Net brassicas to protect from birds, but check regularly that no animals are caught up. Borders Be prepared to support tall growing herbaceous plants such as Delphiniums, with canes or specialist frames that can be lifted as the plant grows. Dead-head regularly to encourage new flower buds. B u l bs Allow foliage of spring flowering bulbs to die down naturally before mowing, otherwise the plants will be weakened and may go ‘blind’ or even die out.

Now in its 8th year the Lark Rise Trail is a challenging off-road cycle ride through the lovely countryside that formed the backdrop to Flora Thompson’s Lark Rise to Candleford. If you have read the book or watched the recent BBC series, see for yourself where Flora lived, went to school and worked as postmistress. Riding through Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, the route will test cyclists of all abilities, with a choice of 40-mile, 25-mile and 12.5mile circuits. You will follow country lanes, ancient tracks and bridal ways, through beautiful parkland and undulating fields and woods. . The shorter circuits will suit families, while the 40-mile ride will challenge even experienced “off-roaders” and passes through the edge of the Silverstone race track and back

through the dramatic landscape of the Stowe Estate. The rides are well signed and start from Fringford between 8.30 and 10.00am. There are refreshments stops along the way. On return to Fringford, you can enjoy our popular barbeque and have a drink with fellow riders. It’s for charity! All proceeds go to Action Medical Research, which has a long standing reputation for conducting vital medical research.
