Bottled Sunshine Looking to perfect that healthy golden glow without exposing your skin to the sun’s wrinkleinducing rays? You’ll be looking to fake it – without going tell-tale orange! Everyone looks healthier and slimmer with a tan, and there are many ways to achieve that glowing sun-kissed look. Take your pick from products to suit all budgets and in all shades of golden, so you can get the back-from-holiday look without breaking the bank, or taking a fortnight out of your busy schedule. For home application, there are lotions, sprays, wipes and gels – some easier to use than others – the general advice for best results is to exfoliate your skin before applying, and to enlist the help of a friend for an even finish in those hard to reach places! Many salons offer spray tans, applied by a skilled beautician or using a spray booth. Make sure you wear dark-coloured clothing to your appointment and don’t wash for at least 12 hours after application, to allow the colour to develop. Then go out and enjoy the admiration from your friends! Kate Martin

Summer First Aid As well as the usual bumps and bruises, the summer brings some other ‘medical moments’. Here’s how to treat some of the most common: Bites and Stings These are usually more painful than harmful. For most bites, apply a cold compress and add bite/sting cream. If stung in mouth, give an ice cube to suck. Call an ambulance if there are breathing difficulties. Sunburn Get out of the sun. Calamine lotion will ease soreness and itching. Use an aftersun cream (aloe vera gel is great). Increase fluids to keep hydrated. For severe sunburn or if there are signs of heat exhaustion/dehydration see a GP. ask

Keep Your Bike Safe! There have been a number of bike thefts in the local area recently so follow these tips to make sure your bike is secure.
114 Tanners Drive, Blakelands, Milton Keynes, MK14 5BP
Tel: 01908 218875
14
When not in use, store your bike in a locked garage or shed. Always lock your bike when you leave it, even if you are just popping into a shop or friend’s house for a minute. A D-shaped lock is recommended. Lock up anything on your bike that can be removed e.g. wheel, light. When locking your bike up, always lock it to something solid such as a lamp post or railings. Have your bike security marked. A bike shop or the police can stamp your postcode onto the bike and attach a sticker to deter thieves. Take a clear colour photo of your bike. You can hand this to the police if your bike is stolen. Make sure you have insurance cover for your bike. Jen Oakton

My name is Bond, Guaranteed Capital Protection Bond What is a Bond? A bond is essentially a loan to a company, a local authority or the government (commonly known as a Gilt). A fixed interest is paid on this loan, and the loan is repaid after a fixed period of time. What is an Investment Bond? An’ investment bond’ is a single premium unit linked investment, which is invested in stocks and shares. The value of an 'investment bond’ can go up and down depending on the markets. An ‘investment bond’ can be managed either ‘on-shore’, meaning the investment is managed within the UK and according to UK tax laws, or ‘off-shore’ (Guernsey, Isle of Man, etc) and subject to local tax laws. The choice of ‘on-shore’ or ‘off-shore’ is generally dependant on the tax situation of the individual making the investment, both when the investment is made and when the investment is repaid. Essentially, there are tax benefits early on within the fund for an ‘offshore investment bond’, which means that there is more money left in the fund to benefit from future growth. One benefit of an ‘investment bond’ is that up to 5% of the original investment can be taken each year, with no tax to pay, as this is viewed as being a ‘return of capital’. Income tax is payable on the difference between the original investment and the value of the bond on maturity. However the tax payable would be based on the taxpayers rate of tax on maturity of the bond, so if somebody had retired for instance, his tax rate might have fallen from 40% to 20%, therefore saving tax on maturity whilst taking an income from the bond
20
throughout the lifetime of the bond. (There are other elements that need to be considered and the above explanation only covers a basic description of how an ‘investment bond’ works, always consult a financial adviser to ensure that this investment would be right for you) What is a Guaranteed Capital Protection Bond? It is an ‘investment bond’ that guarantees the return of the original capital investment, whilst providing exposure to potential stock market growth. The ‘trade-off’ is generally that: 1) Some of the original investment is used to purchase an insurance policy that provides the guarantee of the return of your capital 2) The ‘investment bond’ company ‘caps’ the maximum return you could get on the investment. Who would benefit from a Guaranteed Capital Protection Bond? Somebody that wants to invest in the markets and have the potential for higher returns than a deposit account, whilst at the same time knowing that the original capital investment is secure and will be returned in the future. If you would like advice on the above or on any other financial matter, just call me. I will be pleased to help : ALAN KENT of Scottsdale Consulting Mob: 07948 001849 www.scottsdaleconsulting.co.uk Reg in England No: 4627921 Scottsdale Consulting Ltd, an appointed representative of Intrinsic Wealth Management, a trading style of Intrinsic Financial Planning Ltd, authorised & regulated by the FSA.Intrinsic Financial Planning Ltd, FSA register http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register/ Ref: 440703.

Avoiding ‘phishing’ scams The internet is fantastic – banking and shopping in the comfort of your own home – but amongst the safe and helpful sites, there are scammers who are after your personal details and, ultimately, want to get their hands on your cash. With the summer holidays upon us, it’s even more important to be sure what’s safe and what may be suspect, in order to protect your details and prevent your kids from wandering into dangerous territory. The most popular way for scammers to try to get your cash is via ‘phishing’ – an email is sent, purporting to be from your bank, stating that your account has been hacked and you need to reenter your username and password, to prevent your account being frozen. There is a link within the email which you are instructed to click through to the form, which then harvests your details as you complete it, and lets the scammers get at your bank account and withdraw all your money.
The first piece of advice is – if your bank emails you and asks you for sufficient details to access your account, it’s certainly a scam. Banks do not phone or email asking for entire passwords. Emails from your bank will usually ask you to log in to their website in the usual way, to deal with an issue with your account, or to phone them if there’s a problem with logging in. Always check the web address you are going to is the one you normally use to log on to your bank, and look for the padlock symbol in the corner of the screen, which can be double-clicked to show a site’s security certificate. Many online banks have special software you can download, which notifies you if you start to enter your banking log-in details into a spoof site, so that you can be sure that you aren’t the target of fraudsters. The simple advice is, if there’s an urgent-looking email from your bank, telling you there is a problem with your account and including a link to click, delete the email or report it to your email provider using their ‘report phishing scam’ button. Free and Cheap Days Out in local area The school holiday brings the same old problem – how to keep the kids entertained without blowing the budget. Here are a few places to try that won’t break the bank. Stanwick Lakes (NN9 6GY) is a fabulous day out! It boasts a huge wooden adventure playground (with waterplay so take a few changes of clothes), a full size assault course, an adventure trail, and lots of foot and cycle paths (so take bikes or scooters). Cost: Free but there is a £3 car parking charge. Salcey Forest (NN7 2HX) is a wonderful place for exploring woodland. Kids love to climb the trees and enjoy the treetop walk. Print out children’s activities from the Woodland Trust’s
website www.naturedetectives.org.uk/summer to add new interest if you visit more than once. Cost: Free but £3 per day to park. Other local ‘green’ areas to explore include Stoke Bruerne (budget for a boat ride though), Limes Farm (www.limesfarm.com) , Daventry Country Park, Farthinghoe Nature Reserve, and Willen Lake. Your local library will run fun events and reading challenges for children. These activities are generally free or a very low cost so worth checking out. Take a trip to a museum in Oxford. Pitt Rivers (OX1 3PW) is free and

the kids love looking at the bugs and archaeological finds. There are free family activities during the holidays – see www.prm.ox.ac.uk for details. There is no parking near the museum so take a Park and Ride bus into Oxford – the kids love this! Make use of your Tesco Clubcard vouchers to pay for some big days out. You can swap the vouchers for tickets to many attractions including Warwick Castle, Wicksteed Park, and Thinktank in Birmingham. See www.tesco.com for a full list. Look out for ‘Movies for Juniors’ at local cinemas. Most of these cost £1 per ticket so the kids get the full movie experience at a much lower cost. These showings can be very popular so book in advance. Whatever you do, save money by planning ahead on food and drink. Taking a packed lunch can save you lots of cash!

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133 Some plants seemingly don’t change, yet some, like asters, re-invent themselves, which is a good thing for gardeners, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Pop stars often re-invent themselves to please a new crowd or even a whole new generation, think Madonna, Cher, Elton John and even Tom Jones! Yet even in the world of gardening we have seen something similar, roses that repeat flower, rarely get blackspot and have names to suit, usually plucked out from the pages of Country Life magazine! However, other plants, like asters have become more compact and mildew resistant, fuelling their renewed interest in recent years. Asters are commonly called Michaelmas Daisies because they flower around mid September if not a little before, hence the timely reminder here. As you
may know Michaelmas actually refers to the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, which is a day in the Western Christian Calendar which occurs on 29th September as days shorten and we see the first signs of autumn. The aster family hails from North America and they remain a popular and prominent addition to late summer colour in gardens. Back in Old Blighty, we simply love them for their star-like flowers in white, pink and purple colours which work so well with our other later flowering perennials such as Anemone japonica (Japanese Anemones), Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’ (pictured above with Aster ‘Monch’), Solidago (Golden Rod) and Helenium (Sneezeweed). Asters’ wonderful bright flowers lift the autumn gloom, attracting late bees and butterflies, especially when deciduous shrubs work their magic and produce wonderfully contrasting autumnal foliage.

The Garden in August & September Once the grand furnishings to back-of-border locations, asters are now out and about in the garden. You can buy compact varieties for pots and front of border spots, slightly taller bushy plants perfect in your mixed borders or where you want to plug a gap with colour, or even as a hedging plant, albeit short-term and temporary, such as Aster lateriflorus horizontalis. If you visited the garden of the great and late Christopher Lloyd over at Great Dixter Gardens, you will be aware of this striking variety. So, which ones are worth growing? Well, for starters, Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ is one well worth tracking down as its bright clear lavender-blue flowers with a yellowcentred eye set against dark green foliage are particularly showy. But, best of all, one of its top qualities is this variety’s relative resistance to mildew, which can blight many a good display. Another aster
with good disease resistance is Aster turbinellus. Despite its towering 1.2m (4ft) height, this plant seems to self-support really well with its wiry stems and violet daisies which keep coming over many weeks. Heath Asters, namely Aster ericoides ‘White Heather’ and ‘Cinderella’ are both white flowered and are covered in masses of the tiniest of daisies you can imagine on plants reaching 1m (3ft) or more set against unique heather-like foliage. Often the weight of the flowers sees the stems arching over and billowing into the border (and lawn), so a tip with this one is give this plant space to breathe as well as stake! Perhaps the biggest group you’ll come across are the Aster novi-belgii varieties. There are masses to choose from including ‘Alice Haslam’ - pale red single, 25cm (9in), ‘Chatterbox’ - pale pink double flowers, cont page 28
