You really shouldn’t let the season pass without a visit to Evenley Wood Garden, just outside of Brackley. This 60 acre private woodland garden displays a huge variety of plants including trees, shrubs and climbers, a wide selection of bulbs, and a substantial collection of lilies. An area of acid soil, unusual for this area, allows plants such as rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, to be grown. You can enjoy one of the suggested garden walks, or try to spot some of the many wildlife visitors. Evenley Wood Garden is open at weekends and on Bank Holidays between 19th March and 17th July 2011. Admission Prices are £5 per adult (£4 concessions) and £1 per child. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads.

RACE FOR LIFE! Race for Life events are held so that women of all ages and fitness levels can come together to raise money to help beat cancer. Women can choose to walk, jog, or run either a 5k or 10k course. The emphasis is on fun and fundraising for Cancer Research so the Race for Life events are not competitive and there is no pressure to finish in a certain time. This summer, Race for Life events are taking place locally in: · Milton Keynes on Saturday 11th June · Northampton on Sunday 19th June · Oxford on Sunday 26th June · Banbury on Saturday 30th July
As well as fundraising for a cause close to their hearts, many women use the Race for Life as motivation to get fitter and healthier. There are lots of ways to go about this and many resources to help can be found on the Internet. The Race for Life website www.raceforlife.org has some great training plans for participants whether they plan to walk, jog, or run either the 5k or 10k distance. The training plans are recommended as a guide to increase fitness, boost energy levels, and tone up the legs, bum, and hips. There are many training systems on the Internet that can be followed in preparation for the Race for Life event. One of these, The Couch-to-5k Running Plan (go on, google it!), has been designed for complete beginners who want to get running and has many happy followers and a very high success rate.
So, even if you are a couch potato, there’s no excuse for not moving this summer. Jen Oakton

WINE FESTIVAL The Brackley Wine Festival is back for its second year! The 2011 event will take place in the Town Hall on Saturday 28th May, between 12 noon and 6pm. Organised by Brackley Rotary Club, the Brackley Wine Festival is an opportunity for wine lovers to taste and buy wine from merchants who stock a huge range of special wines from around the world. The festival is a fundraising event with proceeds from the ÂŁ5 entrance fee supporting local youth projects. There will be 12 stallholders including Members of the Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants and local independent suppliers. Their wine experts will be on hand to offer free tastings and help you to discover new wines where quality, taste and flavour take precedence over brands and mass production. You will be able to buy wine from the attending wine merchants at a great price. For more information,

Cut And Come Again Flowers! If you are growing a few vegetables and fruits for the kitchen this summer, do make space for some homegrown cut flowers also, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.
This year’s latest Grow Your Own trend is to plant specific flowers for your own bumper crop of cut blooms, so if you fancy saving a few bob, now is a perfect opportunity to establish the likes of Carnations, Cosmos, Dahlias, Garden Pinks, Lilies, Roses and Sweet Peas. You don’t have to grow them in regimented rows, like your lettuce and potatoes, but you do need to plant a few more than you would normally to give you the sheer quantity of blooms for cutting.
So, where do you grow them? Well, that’s the fun bit. Sweet peas, for example, can be grown as a screen behind a sunny border to give you a wonderful display, or you could establish them as a feature, say on a wigwam structure made of a simple tripod of canes. You can easily incorporate this into a border to provide useful height – so it will look rustic as well as being productive. Remember the key to good sweet peas is plenty of water, copious feeding with a Tomato fertiliser and regularly cutting off the blooms to ensure continuity. Clump forming clove-scented pinks and carnations are ideal for front of border locations. Gritty, fasterdraining soil is essential as well as plenty of sunshine. We’ve many varieties to choose from, but reliable must-haves include ‘Doris’, ‘Mrs Sinkins’ and ‘Monica Wyatt’. Dahlias are available in a wide range of colours and flower forms – decorative, cactus, ball or bedding, there’s plenty of choice, especially if you go for the larger exhibition types. The dark foliage of the ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ is a real head-turner and makes a fine cut bloom, so investigate what’s available and mix and match them in your mixed borders. Best of all they keep flowering through until the first frosts, so are perfect for autumn table vases. Opt for repeat-flowering roses if you are planning to buy some this season. You’ll get two flushes of flowers, in June and late summer, perfect pickings for table decorations. Check out David Austin Roses for

sheer range, flower form and perfume, but don’t underestimate the likes of ‘Arthur Bell’ and ‘Peace’ for traditional form and reliability. Finally, cheap and cheerful cut flowers can be grown successfully from hardy annual seeds sown now. There are plenty to grow including Chrysanthemum, Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), Cosmos, Larkspur (Consolida ajacis), Godetia, Statice ‘Art Shades Mixed’, Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), and Love-in-aMist (Nigella damascena). You can direct sow into a bright, sunny location with some shelter from strong winds, but again there is no reason why you cannot sow them in plug trays, grow them on until they are 34in (10-12cm) high and use these to fill gaps in your existing borders. TOP TIP Cut flowers need support to ensure long straight stems are formed, so remember to position any support early on in order to keep the plants secure as they grow rapidly. Garden canes and twine, twiggy pea sticks, cut hazel or a ring support system are all possible options.

SECURE YOUR SHED! After a recent spate of burglaries in the local area, it would be sensible to check the security of your shed and garden. Garden sheds are particularly popular targets for thieves during milder weather due to the high value of their contents and the low level of security usually found on them. There are several ways to make your shed and garden as secure as they can be: · Place your garden gate as near to the front of your house as possible · Install external lights. PIR ones are great as they come on when movement is sensed. · Add a good quality hasp and staple to your shed door and use a padlock or padbolt. · Smear glue over the heads of screws in the hinges of your shed door – they then can’t be removed. Alternatively use a clutch-head style screw which cannot be unscrewed.

· Fit internal locks to any openable shed windows. · Permanent shed windows can be protected with bars or grilles fitted to the inside. · Invest in an alarm if your shed’s contents are particularly high value. · Lock bikes to something heavy or bulky such as a ladder or workbench. At the very least, lock several bikes together to make them difficult to carry away. · Get your bikes branded with your home postcode. It’s also worth marking other items with your postcode. Doing so visibly will deter a thief as resale of an item will be difficult. · Don’t leave old tools lying around the garden. They might not be worth much but they could be used as house breaking instruments.
It’s worth checking that your home insurance policy covers garden furniture and shed contents just in case the worst should happen. Jen Oakton
