SCENTS & SENSIBILITY You should never underestimate the power of fragrance in the garden, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. As I write this the pollen count is hitting new levels; the yellow rapeseeds, May and other flowering trees are in full swing and, weed seeds are on the wing, so why then would you want more pollen in the garden? A few years ago, a garden was created at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show illustrating the use of low allergen plants. What the garden proved spectacularly was how many of these low allergen plants there are, including Astilbe, Delphinium (pictured left), Geranium, Heuchera, Nepeta, Potentilla, Salvia, Verbena and Viola. For most gardeners, simply avoiding windpollinated plants in your garden is the best approach as the pollen is
easily inhaled, aggravating allergic reactions. So, looking at the list of plants it’s those that are insectpollinated which we should be planting in our gardens. If, however, pollen doesn’t affect you and perfume is essential in the garden, we are approaching the season of wall to wall heavenly scents. For walls, opt for a wonderful rose or two such as ‘Golden Showers’ (bright yellow flowers, good on North walls, RHS AGM) ‘Lady Sylvia’ (soft pink-apricot flowers) or ‘Teasing Georgia’ (yellow flowers that fade to cream at the edges). Where possible, opt for “repeat-flowering” on the label to ensure the best display over the summer months. If you have an arch, pergola or arbour, consider honeysuckles such as Lonicera delavayi (white flowers which turn yellow), ‘Copper Beauty’ (coppery-yellow flower), henryi (yellow flowers stained red) or ‘Horwood Gem’ (creamy-yellow flowers, semi-evergreen). These are evergreen forms of honeysuckle and fortunately for gardeners

The Garden in June are generally less likely to be attacked by mildew. That said, all honeysuckles need ample moisture and some fertiliser (either Vitax Q4 or Toprose) in the early part of the growing season to help sustain their rapid growth. Warm south and west facing walls are perfect for the Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) (pictures right). This evergreen, which generally survived in many gardens last winter, produces its waxy, extremely sweetly scented white flowers throughout the summer these being set against shiny evergreen foliage, which in winter turns a bronze red. Heavy clay soils will need horticultural grit adding to help with drainage before you plant this climber. Temporary fragrance can be easily created by planting wigwams or obelisks of Sweet Peas or simply plunge pots of fragrant pot lilies into containers. You can add bedding plants such as Ten Week Stocks (Matthiola incana) and Tobacco Plants (Nicotiana affinis) to fill any spare gaps you may have. Again, for instant results, pot up a few named varieties of garden pinks (Dianthus) as their clove scent will pervade the smallest of areas. Likewise, both French and English lavender, in flower, produce amazing fragrance, so again single pots of these is all you need. Finally, thankfully there are certain scents which discourage unwanted midges and flies and these are a must if you are planning to entertain late into the evening. Citronella candles and sticks will certainly help keep these pesky insects at bay, so you can enjoy your garden to the full! TOP TIP June and July are good months to sow fragrant biennials such as Sweet William and Wallflowers for flowering in spring 2012! Sow them directly into some well prepared soil, in a spare row or two on the veg plot or sow a couple of seeds per cell in a cell pack tray in multi-purpose compost. Grow into bushy plants for transplanting into their flowering positions in October.
