GARDENING THIS MONTH No Beast from the East this winter, so far at least, but there’s time yet for a sting in her tail. Either way, I reckon we are in for a wetter spring after the extreme dry weather last year. Looking Good Beneath the ground, bulbs will be growing unscathed, emerge and flower to herald the spring. Of great value now are shrubs with bright colour. Winter jasmine has cheerful yellow flowers that will be knocked back by frosts but should now produce more blooms. Prune after flowering, particularly damaged growth. If thinking of a tree, how about one that gives dazzling bark or the glowing amber peels of Thibetan Cherry, Prunus serrula. Jobs in the Garden Now is a great time to plant bare-rooted fruit trees and fruit bushes. As long as conditions allow, get them in the ground so that the roots can make some growth before leaves and shoots emerge in the spring.

In the kitchen garden, harvest the last leaves of kale before they go to seed. In drier spells, assuming no snow cover, prepare growing beds by working down to a tilth. Compost or well rotted manure can be added at this stage but it should be crumbly and odourless to be of immediate benefit to the soil. Ahead of the game To make the most of early Spring light and heat, low tunnels or cloches can be constructed from kits or make your own using plastic water pipe bent into semicircle hoops. Fix the polythene sheets securely so the mad March winds don’t carry them off! Sowing or planting into these beds will give you crops that romp away. Clematis Late February is a good time to prune late-flowering clematis, including the Clematis viticella varieties and other hybrids such as ‘Jackmanii’, that flower late summer (known as ‘group 3’). Cut all growth back to 25-40cm. Give the plant a good feed for a fine display this summer.

Brackley Town Football Club... It has been the customary frantic few weeks in the non-league football world over the festive period and into the New Year as fixtures came thick and fast. After a poor run of results including three successive defeats against Kidderminster Harriers, Altrincham and York City Saints are on an unbeaten run that has revived genuine hopes of making the end of season play-offs. National League North is as competitive as ever with around a dozen sides in realistic contention for the play-off spots as the season passes its half-way mark. No team has pulled away with lots of sides capable of

beating each other. Brackley remain on the fringes of the play-off places with five or six teams separated by just a few points. The FA Trophy has brought out the best in Saints over the last few seasons culminating in last season’s famous Wembley win over Bromley meaning that this time around Brackley Town is constantly pre-fixed with FA Trophy holders Brackley Town”. After the second round win at Hereford’s Edgar Street it is now 22 FA Trophy ties with just one defeat – something of a record. The next round sees Saints travel to Chesterfield. The Spireites play in National League, one level higher, but
