The aim of the monthly Life in BRACKLEY Magazine is to support businesses in order that the local community can flourish. Website: www.inbusinessmags.co.uk

Welcome... JUNE 2017 ISSUE

to the June’s edition of the Life in Brackley magazine, There’s plenty to do in June! We may have run out of Bank Holidays for a while, after May’s double helping, but the long, balmy evenings more than make up for an extra day off here and there…. Local strawberries and cream, relaxing barbecues, evenings just perfect for a family bike ride – June is just perfect for them all! To start the month, it’s half term! To parents everywhere, it’s either an expensive week off or a few days of juggling playdates and holiday clubs, calling in Granny to babysit, just to get to work on time. For frazzled mums and dads everywhere, who enjoyed the long weekend at the end of May, at least it’s a shorter working week and normal order will be resumed on 5th. Back to the packed lunches and forgotten P.E kits! On 17th it’s the Queen’s official Birthday, usually held on the second Saturday in June, but delayed by a week this year because The Duke of Edinburgh celebrates his 96th Birthday on that day - 10th June. In a tradition brought in by George II in 1748, the official celebration is commemorated in London with Trooping the Colour. The Queen celebrated her ‘actual’ 91st Birthday on April 21st, but the annual summer celebration for the monarch was created almost 270 years ago, in an acknowledgement that the country wishes to celebrate, and the weather in this country is seldom settled, except in midsummer! Father’s Day is just the day after, on 18th – so it’s a weekend of celebration! Make this the day you spoil Dad – with a surprise gift, a day out, a relaxing Sunday barbecue with family and friends - or get the kids busy, creating homemade cards and decorating cupcakes! Even if he just gets a lovely cup of tea and sole charge of the TV remote for the evening, make this day a little bit special for Dads, Grandads and uncles everywhere. Wednesday 21st marks the longest day, the Summer Solstice – the day that the sun is highest in the sky, with the earliest sunrise and latest sunset of the year. Make the most of this highlight of the summer, and enjoy!

Conveyancing fraud – Trusting your solicitors Conveyancing fraud can occur in one of many ways, but the most common examples are email fraud and cloning an already established solicitors firm, duplicating their branding and communication so well, that any differences can be easily missed by an unsuspecting client.

Working together to help protect against fraudsters: 1. Our solicitors will contact you directly, either by phone or in face to face meetings. Client information is kept confidential and, being an SRA and FCA regulated company means that stringent processes are in place for data protection and personal data storage. 2. Before sending any money to another firm of solicitors, we will always check that the bank details belong to that firm by confirming them against a “safe” list. If the firm does not appear on this list we will do an online verification of their bank details. 3. We will provide you with our bank details when any money is required. We encourage you to check our bank account details by ringing our office and speaking to a member of staff dealing with your case.

We will never change our bank details during a transaction! 4. If you do receive an email asking you to send money to a bank account, get in touch with your solicitor. But don't use any contact details provided in that email. They could be fake! 5. We are accredited by The Law Society and their Conveyancing Quality scheme (CQS), so our membership can be queried or confirmed with the Law Society or the Solicitors Regulation Authority. For more information, please contact David Inch, Director at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204015 or email dinch@se-law.co.uk.

Great Enterta Squash Spring

The club’s Spring Handicap finals concluded on the 27th and 28th April with some breath taking squash taking place. England Squash, the national governing body for the sport, were in attendance on Thursday night to film some of the action and interview some of the members. They were doing a feature on how both small clubs (Brackley) and

12

large outfits (Pontefract in Yorkshire) can structure themselves to grow and compete in the leisure market. A great honour for the town to be singled out as the Squash Club continues to grow from strength to strength. On the court the handicap is played as a non-stop 20 minute game between opponents of differing ability. The higher ranked

player has to chase down a positive handicap given to his adversary, and the leader at the end of the bout goes through to the next round. This can involve trying to recoup a points’ disadvantage of over 45! It’s a tough sport. In the quarter finals on the Thursday night the highlights were Gary Wilson overcoming a 32 point deficit against talented Alistair Brown and Warren Thorpe prevailing against tournament favourite Dugald Humphreys. Both the semi-finals and the final took place on the Friday night to a packed gallery. First up, Gary Wilson had to overcome another 32 point deficit against Nick Mullis. Getting off to a storming first 5 minutes Gary pulled back

12 of the required target and caught up at the 15 minute mark. With both players tiring, Gary pulled ahead and was pleased to hang on to victory as the bell sounded for time. What a match in the other semi with Warren Thorpe pulling back a 10 point deficit against Jeremy Palmer in the opening 10 minutes. The lead then switched to either player in the second half of the match and was decided on the very last rally with Jeremy winning 48-47. After a 15 minute break for recovery time, Gary and Jeremy went head to head for the final with Gary being required to climb another mountain of a 47 point handicap. With both players tiring quickly the task proved one too many for Gary, and Jeremy was able to stay ahead comfortably, fighting back with some accurate squash every time his opponent threatened. A great victory to Jeremy Palmer on this occasion, and well done to participants and spectators alike. Pictured from the left are Chairman Andy Bright, runner-up Gary Wilson, winner Jeremy Palmer and tournament organiser Brian Coptcoat.

Self-care is impo

Do you forget sometimes to take care of yourself? We can find it hard to put ourselves first. We are all busy juggling our family’s, work and homes but it is important to take care of our mental and physical wellbeing. If we don’t we can start to feel tired, overwhelmed and have low mood.

It does not have to be big gestures to start to look after ourselves. Sometimes it is the little changes that we make that make a big difference. Here are some ideas of ways you can start to look after your mental and physical wellbeing : 1. Mindfulness – Pay more attention to the moment, we are often thinking about the past or worrying

2. Unplug from technology for an hour – we can get sensory overload

3. Go for a walk – take in your surroundings

4 Meet up with a friend. It is an unselfish act to look after yourself as the happier, more fulfilled you are the more you have to give others and the nicer you are to be around Kindly Written by Donna Jones

Wildlife in June

T: 01280 700110

Now that Spring is well and truly underway, the native animals and birds living in our parks, gardens and wild areas are busy breeding, bringing up the next generation whilst nature is kindest and food supplies are plentiful. The warm sunshine heralds the arrival of insects to pollinate fruit blossom, garden plants and the early flowering There’s nothing more beautiful than an evening stroll on a balmy midsummer’s day….and June boasts the longest day of the year – the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful countryside. Combining family time, fresh air, exercise and a bit of rural education for the kids, there couldn’t be a better way to relax and spend time together. June is a wonderful month for seeing wildlife – nature’s bounty is at peak production, with plants supplying food aplenty for everything from the smallest insects to the largest mammals, enabling all species to flourish and to raise the next generation. One of my favourite places for an evening or Sunday afternoon walk is along a canal towpath, where you can enjoy peace and quiet, away from the traffic, and watch wildlife of all kinds, just going about their daily business. With hedgerows and banks providing a great habitat for garden birds, rabbits, ducks, moorhens and many more, it’s the perfect place to see nature in action.

GARDENING THIS MONTH

Chris Swallow, Swallow Nursery

Having had a couple of months of dry, if somewhat cool, weather, suggests that the first half of summer at least, will be warm and wet. It does often turn out this way but maybe that leaves room for a classic late summer. Rose to the occasion You can’t write a looking good list for June without including roses. The vast array on offer these days will often repeat flower if dead-headed regularly, but most will peak this month to give stunning displays. There are many species of rose that, once established, will look after themselves without any extra input. Examples are Rosa glauca with it’s bluish green leaves and pretty pink flowers. Rosa rugosa and it’s cultivars are largely trouble free apart maybe from possible aphid attack. Colours include white, pink and wine-red. The most fancy varieties, however, do need love and attention to keep them at their best. Good deep soil is essential as is a regular mulch with well rotted manure or compost, and Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham est1990

watering in the driest spells. Clear the leaf litter in the autumn and prune according to type at the end of the winter. English Rose Gertrude Jekyll (see pic.) has gorgeous pink blooms with a full old- fashioned look that will come again on a healthy bush – a classic bred by David Austin Hybrid tea roses are known for their large full blooms on long stems, making them great for cutting and arranging. The variety Silver Anniversary is no exception to this with its exquisite petals making it jaw-droppingly beautiful.

In 2012 field survey revealed traces of a prehistoric and Roman settlement enclosed by a ditch. Preliminary excavations near the find spot of the head in 2013 exposed the foundations of a long, stone building resembling a barn, open on one long side and with no surviving traces of a roof or floor. Two two large pewter serving dishes dated to AD 375-400 were also found. 34
