50th Anniversary of Brackley Baptist Church
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Brackley Baptist Church, so as a celebration we are making a pledge! We plan to host or gift 50 different events or actions within the community of Brackley during this year. These events will be an opportunity to join us in our celebrations as we give a little back to the town that has been home to us all these years. The Church was created in 1970 by the families of several American service personnel from Croughton Airbase. Originally worshipping in Lower Heyford and then moving to Bicester, in 1984 the church finally settled in its current home (the old British Legion hall) here in Brackley . The Church has been here ever since, placed in the heart of the community and surrounded by an ever expanding town.As part of our pledge we intend to offer 12 key events, one a month, throughout 2020; each will be an opportunity to join us in having fun. There will also be additional events open to the town; activities within and for the benefit of the town; and other smaller and more personal projects. We will be raising funds at various events with all money being given back into the town through the Mayor’s chosen charity - the new Cottage Hospital. Wherever possible our events will be free of charge with an open invitation to join us. We will, throughout the year, be giving details of forthcoming events through social
media and in the local press, or please visit our website and click on the link from the home page to learn more about our pledge and our plans for the year! We hope you will join us throughout this year, in celebrating the town and the people within it. If you would like to know more about our pledge or about us as a Church, then please visit our website www.brackleybaptistchurch.org.uk or we would love to see you on Sunday mornings from 10.30am.

W h a t s h o u l d I l o o k fo r i n a c o nveya n c e r ? Buying or selling a property can be a stressful process, but there are some easy steps you can take to help to make the conveyancing process as smooth and as calm as possible. Reputation and client satisfaction Take time to research your solicitor or conveyancer. Recommendations by professionals, friends or family are a good starting point. Visit the solicitor’s website and if they have client testimonials, have a read through. Some firms have profiles, photos and contact details of their conveyancers, so you can be reassured who you will be dealing with. Law firms may also be accredited with The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS), providing evidence of a recognised quality standard. Transparent costs Like with most services, you will probably want to get 2 or 3 quotes for your conveyancing work. Make sure you are comparing like-for-like quotes, that you see a breakdown of the fees and that these are
transparent and fixed from the outset. Regular communication Property conveyancing is often dependent on a ‘chain’ and complications can arise that may hold the process up, so it is important your conveyancer keeps you informed of developments as they happen. When choosing your conveyancer, check how they will be communicating with you, for example, ask if they have direct dial and email, and can you check the progress of your matter online 24/7. If you would like to talk to Spratt Endicott Solicitor’s team of property experts in Brackley about buying or selling a property, please contact Terena Barnacle, Head of Brackley office on 01280 730882 or email tbarnacle@se-law.co.uk

After the shorter leap-month of February, we’ve got a full-on 31 days to enjoy in March – and there’s plenty happening, that’s for sure! March 1st is St David’s Day – a celebration of the life of the patron saint of Wales, and a day to delight in all things Welsh into the bargain. We celebrate on 1st March because that’s the anniversary of his death, way back in 589AD – that’s over 1400 years ago! Many people in Wales participate in parades to mark the occasion, and Welsh people worldwide may well be wearing one of their national symbols – a daffodil or maybe even a leek – showing that they’re taking a pride in their heritage. Another wonderful festival of national identity happens halfway through the month, on Tuesday 17th March – with the Irish celebration of St Patrick’s Day. All things green, shamrocks, Guinness and leprechauns are the order of the day, not just throughout Ireland but all around the globe. On Sunday 22nd, the day has arrived when you can spoil Mum or

Nan, Auntie or Gran – it’s Mothering Sunday. Traditionally the day that children in service could go home to visit their mother, now it’s the perfect excuse to thank that special lady who has always been there for you. Whoever has fulfilled that role in your life - supported you, helped you to realise your potential and been a shoulder to cry on when you needed a little TLC, it’s the perfect time to choose a little gift which will tell her just what she means to you. The following Sunday, 29th March, British Summer Time begins - the clocks will go forward at 1am, so you’ll get an hour less in bed. If you struggle to remember which way the hour goes, it may help to know the saying ‘Spring forward, Fall back’ – thank goodness for phones and laptops, which sort the time out for themselves – it takes me long enough to sort the oven, car and kitchen clocks out!

Ke e p i t g re e n w h e n yo u c l e a n ! !
As the days start to lengthen, the weather starts slowly warming up and bright sunshine floods through my kitchen window, that irresistible urge to start the Spring cleaning hits! It only takes one sunny morning to make those cobwebs show up, fingerprints and smears on the windows become all-too evident and then I’m ready to do battle - armed with a bucketful of cloths, dusters, brushes and potions. Even though it’s tempting to use the strongest, most lethal chemicals available to blitz away the grot, we’ve all got to think green to protect the planet – so it’s a great idea to use repurposed and natural products wherever possible. Here are a few top tips to get amazing results, without costing the earth: • Your kitchen cupboards already contain plenty of ingredients which are also great cleaning products – baking powder, vinegar, lemons and salt are all amazing grime shifters. • Keep your cleaning kit simple – most tasks can be tackled with a few brushes, scourers and some really good cleaning cloths. To keep the green theme, why not repurpose some old clothes? Battered old T-shirts make wonderful dusters – they’re really soft and absorbent, so perfect for polishing, buffing or mopping up spills.
• Boiling water works wonders to keep bugs at bay, it melts through grease and will even make sure your kitchen sink stays blockage-free, if you pour half a kettleful down the plughole every day or two. • If your microwave needs sprucing up, add half a lemon to a small heatproof bowl of water and microwave for 5 minutes, then leave the door closed to let the steam work for ten minutes or so, before switching off at the plug and then wiping up the moisture with soft cloths. • Cleaning windows is easy with a microfibre cloth, hot water and vinegar – if they’re really dirty, then adding a couple of drops of washing up liquid to the solution will get any grime off. The vinegar gives the glass a brilliant shine, and microfibre cloths hold the dirt and work like a chamois leather to prevent streaks. • Keep the loo sparkling clean using baking powder – add a couple of tablespoonsful into the pan, leave it to work for 10 minutes, then pour a mugful of vinegar carefully around the bowl. Let the mixture fizz away for a few minutes, then scrub well with the loo brush, flush and see how spotless it looks, with only natural products! • Keep a spray bottle - filled with a 10% solution of vinegar and water - and a squeegee near your shower cubicle, then it’s quick and easy to give the glass a spray after each shower – saving time and making sure it always looks sparkling!

The Brackley Community Hospital is finally becoming a reality. The town has waited for so long. The original Cottage Hospital was scheduled for closure by the NHS on financial grounds back in 1990 and kept running by a charitable trust until 2015. There has since been a hiatus, but building began on the new community hospital at the start of 2019 and is scheduled to finish
Dates for Pu Tuesday 10th March , Eger Thursday 19 March, T
in May this year, with fitting out taking an estimated eight further weeks. The new building, just off Northampton Road at the north end of town, will house one of the town’s GP surgeries as well as the Community Hospital facilities. These will include clinics, consulting rooms for visiting clinicians, a physiotherapy unit with gym, a podiatry service, an X-ray machine and eventually an ultrasound scanner. On the second floor there will be 16 intermediate care beds, effectively reprovisioning (and more) what was lost when the Cottage Hospital closed. ThePage new 1 Project4_Use Leaflets 27/12/2017 15:38

GA R D E N I N G T H I S M O N T H Article written by Michelle Hiscutt
Time Marches On
With named storms and so much rain, all but the keenest of gardeners will have spent their Februarys hunkered indoors giving little thought to their patches. Perhaps an admiring glance at a clump of snowdrops. But all the while, the mild winter has been moving your garden on. Buds are swelling, daffodils are out, the cherry plum blossom has already been doing its fluffy thing in hedgerows and the blackthorn will not be far behind.
So, if its a fine one, seize the day and finish up the late winter pruning jobs: roses, clematis (late flowering forms), buddleia, dogwood all need to be cut back before heading into spring. Apple and pear trees, autumn flower-
ing raspberries, currants etc need to have had their winter chop, rather careful selective pruning I should say . Any overwintering stems of grasses and perennials left for interest/wildlife needs clearing away. Once tidy, pressure wash paths to clear mud or algae. If there are ever dry days then painting fence panels and other woodwork in the garden will really lift the appearance of your space. Did you know, dark paints like black or the ubiquitous dark grey are brilliant for helping the planting in front pop out, seeming to make the fence itself disappear? Once all the spring cleaning is done there will be time to get a nice mug

of something warm to plan for the season ahead. What didn’t quite work last year? Are you looking to attract more wildlife? Wanting more colour at a specific time of year? If the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged it is a great time to move shrubs and divide perennials to get it right. As the bare root season is ending now, pick up a bargain if new trees or shrubs are in order. Summer bulbs and tuberous dahlias, tender cannas can be bought and potted up but do not leave unprotected until after last frosts in May. As we get past the equinox, and the birds begin chorusing in earnest, spring be well and truly sprung. Happy gardening!

Brackley Town’s stop-start season continued as the recent storms tore the National League North programme to pieces. Saints’ home game against high-flying Boston United was blled as the match of the day but sadly fell foul of the gales, denying the club the financial boost of a big crowd and media coverage. This is another postponed game to be re-arranged. The St James Park pitch was water-logged after heavy rain overnight on Friday. The referee held a pitch inspection early on the Saturday morning and, with the weather forecast bearing only grim news of further wind and rain for later that day, had no
hesitation in giving it the thumbs down and saving the estimated 250 Boston United supporters the trek down. After several high profile late postponements in recent weeks, the way the club managed this situation was exemplary. On the pitch Saints have hit a dip and slipped to 6th place in the league table. With 14 matches
remaining, manager Kevin Wilkin knows his side need to recover their touch in front of goal and to start recording wins again if they are to finish in the play-off places come late April. His side’s impressive defensive record has held up, the meanest defence in the division. But the goals at the other end have dried up. The minimum expectation around St James Park is for a place in the end of season play-off finals. So every game is now crucial with some big games against teams in and around those top spots to come. All the information about forthcoming games is on the club website and Twitter feed.
