The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills.

Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will.

Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected.

The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills.

World Smile Day

As we tumble into Autumn, it’s lovely to have another reason to be cheerful – and the first Friday in October is World Smile Day®- when we can all make a real difference, just by helping others. Founded by the creator of the wellknown Smiley face, Harvey Ball, World Smile Day was first celebrated in 1999 and ever since then, people all around the world have used this day to make a special effort to do just one kind deed, or something that will make another person smile. As you may have guessed, Harvey Ball was from the US – from Worcester, Massachusetts, to be precise – and he invented that Smiley face with a special place in our hearts - and text messages - way back in 1963! Of course, it was an instant success, even way back then; as it is culturally and gender neutral it appeals to everyone, everywhere as a symbol of happiness.

Over time, Harvey became worried that the true spirit of what he had created Smiley for was being lost through over-commercialisation of the image, so he decided to pull Smiley back to his roots. He created a special day to celebrate every year, to encourage everyone to focus on those important values which Smiley was created to embody. After Harvey’s death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established, to continue the work he started in promoting world kindness. So, what can you do to celebrate this year, on Friday 5th? How about making Smiley cupcakes, and taking them into work, school or to share with friends? Maybe host a children’s party, with Smiley face painting, or decorated balloons, or how about getting together and making a giant human Smiley? I like the idea of ‘paying it forward’ – doing a kind deed ‘just because’,

in the hope that the recipient will do the same for someone else – maybe just opening a door for someone, buying their morning coffee or paying for their car parking if they don’t have the right change? It’s got to be a good thing, if we’re making the world a kinder and more thoughtful place, that’s the Smiley philosophy - so what will you choose to do this World Smile Day?

Runaway early leaders Chorley apart, there are so many teams that are well matched and have high expectations that this looks set to be a great season that will run right to the wire. Chorley won seven straight games at the start of the campaign as others stuttered. The leaders dropped their first points against Brackley who had a mixed few opening games before finding their stride to put together a run of impressive form as Kevin Wilkin’s side gelled. A series of home games against big teams such as York City, Darlington and Hereford brought big crowds to St James Park and games of high quality. With a change of personnel

from last season Wilkin changed formation reverting to four at the back and a lone striker supported from midfield with strong wing play. This places a lot of responsibility on the striker and Lee Ndlovu, 23, has risen to the challenge magnificently already over-taking his goal tally from last season and proving himself a handful for any defence. A summer signing from nearby Rushden & Diamonds, young Luke Fairlamb, has also been a revelation with his pace and trickery on the wing and is certainly one to watch. FA Cup and FA Trophy campaigns begin and Saints will of course be hoping to emulate the successful cup runs of recent seasons even if a second Wembley appearance seems unlikely! With memories of last May’s

FA Trophy victory at Wembley still fresh in supporters’ minds, the club is delighted to hold the magnificent silver trophy and to display it at home games. If you have plants with beautiful seedheads, such as poppies, eryngiums, teasels, they can be dried for showing indoors over winter. Cut them with plenty of stem, and hang them in an airy place to dry. Enjoy! Perennials can be cut back now, to get the neat look for the winter. Some subjects can be left if they are still looking good. In the kitchen garden, cropped ground can be dug over, incorporating organic matter such as well rotted manure. Now is the last chance to plant spring cabbage, and don’t for get to net them to keep the birds off. If the runner beans are finished, cut them off but leave the roots in the ground as these legumes will add valuable nitrogen.
