Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these

The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills. Due to changing patterns in family life such as partners cohabiting or having second families making a will is becoming ever more important. Unfortunately, even when a will is made problems can arise if it is not drafted carefully. Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will. The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and

emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills. Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected. Making a will with a solicitor needn’t be expensive. At Spratt Endicott, the usual cost for making a single will is £275 plus VAT or £375 plus VAT for mirror wills. If you would like to discuss making, or updating your will please contact Emma Rolfe on 01869 222 315 or erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

NEWS FROM NHS BUCKINGHAMSHIRE CLINICAL COMMISSIONING GROUP

VACCINE ROLLOUT TO CARE HOMES ON TARGET IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

Residents and staff at care homes across Buckinghamshire are delighted to be receiving the first dose of their Covid-19 vaccine. Teams of medics have been dispatched to residential care and nursing homes across the county in recent weeks to vaccinate the people who fall into the top-most category to receive the potentially life-saving vaccine. The Fremantle Trust operates 11 nursing and residential homes across Buckinghamshire, catering for around 700 residents and with over 1,000 employees. In the past few weeks residents have received their vaccines on site and staff have been able to get their vaccine at the hospital hub set up in Stoke Mandeville stadium and in the care homes where they work. Sara Livadeas, Chief Executive of the Fremantle Trust said: “It’s been a very emotional weekend. Everyone across our organisation - residents, employees and families, are so excited to see this day. The long-awaited vaccine is finally here and we are able to start protecting everyone against this dreadful disease. We are thankful to the NHS and volunteers who have worked so speedily to make this happen. You don’t just need to take my word for how happy this makes us all feel, just take a look at 12

the huge smiles on everyone’s faces.” The government has pledged that all those in the top four priority categories will receive the first dose of their Covid-19 vaccine by 15 February. In Buckinghamshire, these four groups are all on schedule to have received their first dose within the targeted date. Angela Macpherson, Buckinghamshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “We are pleased to see so many of our older and vulnerable residents and the people who care for them getting their vaccines. The NHS is working around the clock to ensure that these priority groups are given protection as soon as possible. Our care homes have faced many difficult challenges during this pandemic. There are still challenges ahead but this vaccine rollout gives hope and optimism for the future. We will continue to work with all our care providers over coming weeks to prioritise the protection of all our vulnerable residents and those who care for them.”

Dr Raj Bajwa, Chair of NHS Buckinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It is wonderful to see the vaccine now reaching so many care home residents and members of staff. There is still lots of work to be done and we must not be complacent, but this is a great cause for hope after the extremely difficult months care homes have faced. “I would also like to praise the remarkable efforts of our GP practices and vaccination teams, who have been working tirelessly to get this vaccine out to our most vulnerable patients as quickly as possible.” Press Release from Buckinghamshire Council

Good Old Fashioned Pancakes This is a great recipe that I found in my Grandma’s recipe book. Judging from the weathered look of this recipe card, this was a family favorite. This will make 8 pancakes. • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon white sugar • 1-1/4 cups milk • 1 egg • 3 tablespoons butter, melted Step 1 In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth. Step 2 Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4

Let gardening be your best friend As the pandemic continues to affect our lives, research from around the world has confirmed something many of us gardeners already know – gardening really is good for you, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Last year it is reckoned that between 2-3 million people in this country discovered the joys of gardening for the very first time. They joined the many already enthusiastic gardeners in using their outdoor space – whether it be a garden, small or large, a balcony, or a window box, to

Woodlands Logs & Kindling DELIVERED LOCALLY 0844 4141174 18

continue to connect with nature and to grow plants for food or simply for enjoyment. If anything, last year confirmed that both gardens and gardening bring benefits to our physical and mental health, from providing exercise and keeping us active and fit, to getting us outside and connecting with plants, soil, and the natural world around us. By creating a beautiful garden outside your own back door you’ll have a personal sanctuary to step out into, and somewhere to grow healthy food and welcome in wildlife. In ‘normal times’ this would include using the garden space to spend quality time with family and friends. Hopefully, in the coming months with vaccines being rolled out this will return for us all to enjoy. For me gardening is a creative, rewarding and a productive pastime, with numerous opportunities to learn new skills, share ideas and make new friends. All these have a positive and restorative effect on mental and physical health, keeping mind and body active, whatever your age.

WINDOWSILL SOWINGS Spring really is coming and seed sowing is just around the corner. Get ahead of the game and buy your seeds, multi-purpose composts, vermiculite, labels, seed trays and all the other paraphernalia now as the Garden Centre is open, so that when those first sunny days inspire you to start sowing seeds you are ready and prepared. You can now sow many of the herbs such as Chives, Coriander, Oregano and Parsley, and vegetables including Beetroot, Broad Beans, Peas, Carrots, Peppers, Parsnip, Onions, Summer Cabbage and early Tomatoes. With additional heat you can start Cosmos, Pelargoniums (Geraniums), Lobelia and Sweet Peas. If you are planning on plenty of seed sowings it is well worth investing a few pounds in a propagator as this will provide some gentle bottom heat which will speed up the germination process for you.

TIME TO CHEER UP We have the prospect of early spring colour arriving in pots shortly with a glorious range of UK grown potted bulbs, including Snowdrops, Winter Aconites, English Bluebells, Hyacinths, Iris, Narcissi Tête-à-Tête, and Tulips which are perfect to add to your pots and maybe to bring indoors on a cool windowsill to give some welcome colour and scent. Later in the month young summer plug plants will start to arrive in the shop and these will include Fuchsias, Pelargoniums, Petunias, Bidens and other colourful hanging basket plants perfect for growing on in a frost-free location.

KEEPING BUSY If this third lockdown has taught us anything it’s that we’ve more time on our hands for doing those routine and often mundane tasks. So, weather conditions allowing, how about these few ideas for starters? Give the fence – both sides if possible - a coat or two of wood preservative but please read the instructions before starting as most fence/wood treatments are water based and cannot be applied in cold conditions. Have a chat with your neighbour if the fence is shared so you can decide on colour and look at the costs. Greenhouses and sheds will definitely benefit from a tidy up – clearing clutter and sweeping out the interior. Go through your shed and remove any old, out-of-date garden chemicals. If in doubt of how to dispose of them, your local authority tip should be able to help. Wash down the glass and in dry weather apply a timber treatment to help maintain the structure. Clear gutters and make sure you have a water butt set up and ready for the new growing season. Now is a good time to lift and move plants whilst they are fully dormant. Look back at your growing successes and any failures - and plan for any new planting projects you would like to introduce.

PRUNING TIME for Hydrangeas – removing the old flower heads on Lace Cap and Mophead varieties by the end of the month. Cut back to just below the old flower head. Butterfly bushes, Buddleja, will benefit from a drastic cut-back to 45cm from soil level to help stimulate plenty of strong shoots which will carry blooms through the summer. The decorative stems of Dogwoods (Cornus) should be cut back by two-thirds. This may seem harsh; however, it is important to encourage strong new growth from the spring to provide those richly coloured stems for next winter. Once your Mahonia has finished flowering it is important to remove the old flowering spikes by trimming them back. Doing this should encourage new growth to develop. ROUTINE Cut back herbaceous Sedum plants to help encourage a fresh flush of growth from the base to develop. Many other herbaceous plants would benefit from a general tidy up this month, including Aster, Coreopsis, Nepeta and Phlox. To do this remove older unproductive growth as this

will encourage fresh growth shortly. Give your fruit trees, fruit bushes and vines an organic winter wash such as Vitax Winter Wash before the end of February to help control overwintering pests such as aphids, red spider mite, scale insects and codling moth grubs. The wash should be applied as a fine spray, thoroughly covering all bark surfaces, with particular attention being paid to the crooks of branches and stems where pests may hide. Continue to plant bare-root roses when it is dry underfoot. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost to the soil before planting, treat the roots with some RootGrow, and mulch well after planting, and then set up a regime of watering, to ensure the roses grow strongly in the spring. This should be a gallon of water applied in one go once a week in dry weather, as this will penetrate the ground and reach all the roots. A small amount, which only penetrates the surface, is not good as this can encourage the roots to grow too near the surface, where they can dry out more easily. START YOUR SPUDS It’s still too early to plant potato tubers. However, it’s the perfect time to select the varieties you wish to grow and get them set up for sprouting, or chitting

to give it its correct name. Chitting simply means encouraging the seed potatoes to sprout before planting. Place in a light, cool, frost free position which will give short, stubby green shoots. In the dark the shoots will be long and white which is not good. You can start chitting from late January in warmer parts of the country or in February in cooler areas, about six weeks before you intend to plant out the potatoes. Each seed potato has a more rounded, blunt end that has a number of ‘eyes’ (pictured) and this should be at the top. We have over 40 varieties of potatoes available this winter, including some organically grown tubers, first early ‘Orla’, second early ‘Bambino’ and maincrop varieties ‘Arran Victory’ and ‘Sunset’. These are sold in 1kg nets at £2.99 each. Most other varieties are available loose so you can choose the exact weight you need. For our

Buckinghamshire Council is ‘pulling out all the stops’ to give Bucks businesses an extra boost

Businesses in Buckinghamshire are now receiving the latest wave of business grants announced by the Chancellor Rishi Sunak. Guidelines for the delivery of this next wave of the Local Restrictions Support Grant (LRSG) were released to councils by government on Wednesday last week and payments started to reach businesses in Bucks this week.

New LRSG grants now live Local Restrictions Support Grants support businesses which have a rateable value and have been told to close, or whose business has been limited because of Covid. As a result of the Covid restrictions in place during December and January, many businesses across Buckinghamshire have seen their takings plummet during this vital trading period so it’s essential they get financial help as fast as possible. To make it quicker and easier, all businesses in Buckinghamshire registered for LRSG support on or after 19 December will not have to re-register. They will automatically get this next wave of grants and we started processing them last Friday. Teams at Buckinghamshire Council are working seven days a week to fast track payments for the latest LRSG grants and continuing to process existing applications. Payments for both waves of LRSG

are now reaching eligible Buckinghamshire businesses. Any new applications for this latest round of LRSG need to be in by 31 January.

Special local boost for Buckinghamshire businesses Buckinghamshire Council has also added an uplift payment to boost the money our local businesses are getting through LRSG payments. Local businesses have already started seeing these extra ‘Buckinghamshire Boost’ payments, worth an average of around £1000, arriving in their accounts as part of their December LRSG payment and we are still processing more. So far we have distributed £1.2 million. Local ‘safety net’ – Bucks Additional Restrictions Grants (Bucks ARG) In addition to boosting the local LRSG payments going out to businesses, Buckinghamshire Council is channelling government money to create additional local grants called Buckinghamshire Additional Restrictions Grants (Bucks ARG) . These extra grants are designed specifically to provide a financial safety net to help local businesses who fall outside the LRSG funding criteria set out by national government. Many selfemployed people or businesses who can’t get LRSG are now Email: inbusinessmags@gmail.com

benefiting from this extra local business grant scheme. The largest demand for these Buckinghamshire Additional Restriction Grants has come from arts, entertainment and recreation businesses with wholesale and retail, motor repairs and scientific and technical businesses also well represented. Any business can apply as this is not a sector specific grant. So far, around £6 million has been paid out to businesses that would otherwise not get any financial help through the national LRSG scheme. Any and all business sectors can apply for this current round of Bucks ARG funding which closes on 31 January. A new Bucks ARG scheme will start on 1 February to distribute the additional national funding announced most recently by the Chancellor. We’re developing a new round of Buckinghamshire Additional Restrictions Grant funding to be released soon to get the latest funding flowing into the economy. Details will be on our social media channels @BucksCouncil and on our website www. buckinghamshire.gov.uk.
