Local author Chris Griffiths has just released his fourth autographical book on amazon.co.uk “ Local author Chris Griffiths has just released his fourth autographical book on amazon. co.uk. You wouldn’t think a person would have that much to write about, but Chris does. From a very early age he has travelled an unusual path, full of trauma, pain, adventure and laughter. With trademark honesty he looks at life from home and abroad , and asks many questions in his search for inner peace. His first book “ How Grim Was My Valley” is a shockingly true account of a life lived in extraordinary testing times in 1960’s and 70’s England. An upsetting and laugh out loud account of one boys story. The book is set in Weedon Bec,
Northamptonshire. His second book “The Furry Angel” is a book you will never forget and will have you laughing as well as brushing away the odd tear. It is a heart rending tale about sadness, hope and most of all love. A mentally broken man who is rescued by his beloved Golden Labrador Pippin. His third book “The Healing of The Wasichu” is set mainly in the deserts and mountains of South West America. It follows Chris as he walks a path, oblivious to the dangers, in search of inner peace. Something that had been missing for a very long time. Follow him as he discovers one state and the people within that majestic and beautiful part of the world. His fourth book
“How Verde Was Their Valley” cleverly links the previous books together. It shows the continuation of his life, after beating mental illness . It shows a resilience that many can understand. It shows a love and respect of his fellow man and nature. It also shows a very disturbed sense of humour. Join him as he makes friends with the Native American Yavapai Apache tribe. And read how he tries to make his little bit of the world a better place.”
Beautiful materials. Precise craftsmanship. Custom made for you. DC

H ave yo u u p d a t e d yo u r w i l l l a t e ly ? Good! You have set up a will to safeguard your loved ones, but even after you’ve signed your name, life events and circumstances will continue to change around you. As a rule of thumb, many solicitors advise that wills should be reviewed and updated every three to five years to remain relevant. When should I update my will? There have been changes to family members and relationships Births, deaths, marriages and divorces should trigger a need to update a will. Always ensure that the correct people are named on your most current will and people whom you no longer want to include in your will are taken off. Updating your will is especially important if you are remarrying as your previous will is automatically invalidated. You’ve bought a home or business Buying a home or business adds to your asset
portfolio, which is included in your estate upon your death. Having a will in place that states how these assets are to be distributed can help with effective tax planning. There have been changes to tax laws From time to time, new tax and probate laws are brought in by governing bodies. It is good practice to check if any of these new laws affect your estate and management thereof. Additionally, if you move to a new country, certain laws can impact differently. For more information about creating a will or updating an existing will, please contact Emma Rolfe, Solicitor at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01869 222315 or email erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

Has self-care become stressful? I was recently invited to join a panel of experts to speak to a group of business women about self-care around running a business. What I quickly discovered was that this new trend of having a ‘self-care’ plan came with a list of ‘shoulds’. We SHOULD meditate, we SHOULD go to the gym, join a yoga / pilates class, study mindfulness. These amazing women were following self-care plans that weren’t necessarily things they enjoyed doing, they were following in the power of the ‘SHOULD’. It left me thinking, as a promoter of self-care, that maybe we need to encourage each other to make small changes so that self-care slots in and becomes an escape rather than adds to our to do list. So here are some suggestions: 1. Sit to eat your meals. Many parents and carers are filling the dishwasher, cleaning up, putting washing on, all while their
children eat the meal that has been prepared. Give yourself permission to sit, eat and enjoy your meal with the family. 2. Increase your water intake by linking it to something else you do regularly. Every time you boil the kettle, pour a glass of water and drink it all. 3. Breathe through your nose. It may feel unfamiliar, but that’s ok as it’ll make you focus just on breathing. Remember, the nose is for breathing and the mouth is for kissing. 4. Establish a good bed time routine, leave your phone downstairs or putting it on airplane mode.

Putting the garden into
Naturalistic planting provided the strong theme of this year’s Chelsea Flower Show and there’s something to be said for the creativity and planting it brings, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. “Where have all the flowers gone?” I overheard a number of visitors begging this question when viewing the huge show gardens on my visit to the Royal Horticultural Society’s annual extravaganza. Of course, there were amazing displays of colour by the spadeful in the floral marquee, however, minimal colour was used in the main gardens, bar a couple. There was plenty of colour, albeit greens and muted tones, in the show gardens. When we look at one of
these show gardens it tends to be from one view, however, this year looking at the gardens through the camera lens it appeared to be a more immersive natural experience. Many of the gardens had layers of planting which you could wander through, to look down then up through the different layers, to take in infinite perspectives. There was use of see-through plants such as Cow Parsley relatives and Verbena. If you were to use bold bright colours the focus changes and your eye is drawn so you don’t often see the bigger picture beyond. The more naturalistic planting certainly does lend itself into our smaller gardens, which let’s face it, is where we need to utilise space to the maximum, so any tricks that help give more feeling of space to our plots can only be a good thing. So, what plants are classed as naturalistic? Well you could take the lead from a plant community that you are familiar

o nature’s hands with, for example what you see along a woodland edge in Britain in spring. Consider growth rates – will one plant become dominant and eliminate the slower-growing species? Match the chosen plant palette to your soil and to the growing conditions. If you have shade from trees or larger shrubs why not maximise the space by planting Snowdrops and Bluebells for early spring colour? If your soil is damp then plant some wild garlic for colour and its strong aroma. This is a true woodland plant that will quickly colonise the soil and it can be used in the kitchen. Wildflower areas, including meadows and edge of lawn scrub areas, can easily be planted with wildflowers grown on from young plug plants. The best time to start sowing the seeds would be late winter and then into early summer into plugs. Once these plants have developed a strong root system they can be planted into your ‘natural area’.

You can use a trowel, however, for convenience I tend to use a bulb planter as this takes out a neat core of soil which provides the perfect hole to place your wildflower plugs. Add a sprinkling of friendly-fungi RootGrow to the base of the planting hole to aid establishment. It’s worth remembering that wildflowers don’t enjoy particularly rich soils and they generally flower best in free-draining soil. These wildflowers will produce strong plants for next spring and provide wonderful colour and rich pollen for insects to increase your garden’s natural biodiversity. When it comes to establishing our beds and borders, one tip which works well is to build up your planting schemes into three vertical layers, starting with the lowest. The main plants you would use are perennials which would increase in vigour over the years as well as providing reliable colour. Short plants less than 30cm (12in) should form the base of the planting scheme at around
Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham
40-50 per cent of the mix, and I tend to choose plants that naturally form low hummocks of growth. Good examples include Heuchera, the popular perennial Coral Bells, which is shade-tolerant, making it particularly useful as a ground-layer plant that won’t mind a little shading from the taller plants. Good doers include Coreopsis verticillata ‘Zagreb’ and Centranthus ruber coccineus (Crimson Red Valerian) would work well together. Primula veris and Primula vulgaris are other shade-tolerant options, perfect for a hedgerow or woodlandedge-inspired area of planting. The middle layer approximately 30cm100cm (12in-40in), around 40 per cent of the mix should contain plants with a long flowering season and a relatively upright form. Sanguisorbas are invaluable for their airy structure and elongated tassel or button-like flowers. For a scheme inspired by British moist meadows, try Sanguisorba officinalis, Lythrum virgatum ‘Dropmore Purple’ and Centaurea nigra (otherwise known as Common Knapweed, pictured). If you have a free-draining soil in a sunny situation, Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’, Liatris spicata ‘Alba’, Eryngium bourgatii, Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ (pictured) and Salvia

(40in) or more, and providing approximately 10 per cent or less of the mix. Use these plants to bring a strong rhythm to the scheme and these are usually placed first so that you can see their distribution clearly. The lower two layers are planted at random amongst them. Random doesn’t mean the distribution lacks any kind of pattern or regularity: there will be clumps of certain species, just as they would naturally grow in nature. For the upper layer, use tall upright species such as Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’ which creates a vibrant composition when planted with Verbena bonariensis and/or the less well-known Verbena hastata. Lysimachia ‘Firecracker’ produces starshaped yellow flowers and is great at encouraging bees
and other pollinating insects. Creating a natural native barrier can also be part of the larger picture for your plot. Native hedge lines really do help to create a fantastic habitat for a whole host of insects and nesting birds, as they are nectar sources and a rich source of food for birds. They also offer a useful and important security measure as a mixed native hedge usually contains two particularly prickly and barbed species – Quickthorn (Crataegus, pictured) and Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa). The best time to establish this type of hedge, which can be kept restricted in both height and width, would be in the early winter with bare-rooted seedlings or transplants. The native hedge will have an informal feel because it’s made up of a mixture of different tree and shrub species. It will quickly form a dense barrier and will happily tolerate pruning.
