Maxwell receive AVCT grant support for Swimming in the Vale Competitive swimming has many rewards and provides fantastic opportunities but does require great determination and commitment to succeed. The athlete receives early morning and late evening coaching plus their mums and dads, drive to training very early, volunteer to run the clubs and, of course, support the costs. This dedication, determination and outstanding performance of the swimmers, parents & volunteers of Maxwell Swim Club Ltd has been recognised by Aylesbury Vale Community Trust (AVCT). The trust, established in the Vale to support local causes, has awarded grants to support training and development to four of the club’s young swimmers. Elite Athlete Funding grants were given to Gracie Hudson, Poppy Baybutt, Izzy Ford and Charlie Toms. Head coach, Noel Horton commented, “not only are the four swimmers extremely talented athletes, capable of reaching the very top in their sport,
but they are also great kids in training who work hard every day, and encourage their team mates. They reflect so well on our club, their coaches and Aylesbury Vale.” Maxwell Swim Club has further reason to thank AVCT for its support. Maxwell is keen to help young athletes to be both great swimmers and helpful, skilled and positive members of our community. AVCT has awarded Maxwell a grant to run a Swim South East England Accredited Poolside Helpers Course, for teenagers aged 13-15. The six month course will teach training techniques, first aid, child safeguarding, and timekeeping. This will help both the club and the local swimming community, and provide valuable life skills for those involved. Maxwell would like to thank AVCT for all their support.

What should I look for in a conveyancer? Buying or selling a property can be a stressful process, but there are some easy steps you can take to help to make the conveyancing process as smooth and as calm as possible.
that you see a breakdown of the fees and that these are transparent and fixed from the outset.
Reputation and client satisfaction Take time to research your solicitor or conveyancer. Recommendations by professionals, friends or family are a good starting point. Visit the solicitor’s website and if they have client testimonials, have a read through. Some firms have profiles, photos and contact details of their conveyancers, so you can be reassured who you will be dealing with. Law firms may also be accredited with The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS), providing evidence of a recognised quality standard.
Regular communication Property conveyancing is often dependent on a ‘chain’ and complications can arise that may hold the process up, so it is important your conveyancer keeps you informed of developments as they happen. When choosing your conveyancer, check how they will be communicating with you, for example, ask if they have direct dial and email, and can you check the progress of your matter online 24/7.
Transparent cost Like with most services, you will probably want to get 2 or 3 quotes for your conveyancing work. Make sure you are comparing like-for-like quotes,
If you would like to talk to Spratt Endicott Solicitor’s team of property experts in Buckingham about buying or selling a property, please contact Abigail Grantham, Head of Buckingham office on 01280 730705 or email agrantham@se-law.co.uk.

The 2019 Buckingham Half Marathon
The 3rd staging of the Buckingham Half Marathon takes place this year on Sunday June 9th. Runners will follow the same route as in 2018, beginning at the Maids Moreton playing fields and passing through Leckhampstead, Wicken and Akeley before returning to the starting point. Last year saw a record number of over 400 entrants, with the profit of £8000 going to local charities. This year we are supporting The Puzzle Centre in Middle Claydon, and The Winter Night Shelter Milton Keynes, which supports the homeless and vulnerable.
The event is being sponsored by Rainscourt Family Law Solicitors of Milton Keynes, and Buckingham based Lee Therapies, Bates Body Factory, The Energy Effect Fitness Studio and The Gallery Dental Practice. We are also indebted to Maids Moreton and Akeley Parish Councils. Buckingham Town Rugby Club, Vitalograph, Buckingham Primary School, Tesco and the BCQ group. The list may seem long but it is an indication of the way the local community continues to get behind the event.
Entry fees are £24 or £22 for England Athletics affiliated runners, further details and how to enter can be found on the Buckingham & Stowe Running Club website www.buckinghamrunningclub.com. But if you’d like to volunteer in anyway, such as marshalling or helping at the water stations, then please contact the club at buckinghamrunningclub@hotmail.co.uk. The half marathon starts at 9.30am so why not come along and cheer on the runners? 12

Creating a taste of the Orient With spring just around the corner our thoughts and inspirations encourage us to look at new ideas and plants for our plots, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. If you have been inspired by Monty Don’s recent two-part BBC series on Japanese Gardens here are a few pointers you might like to consider if you are planning a suitably themed makeover.
are often sparsely planted, so the spaces around the plants are as important as the plants themselves. Cleverly this can also help to create the effect of a bigger garden. Japanese gardens often ‘borrow’ the landscape around them. So, if you have a good view from your lounge or kitchen window, simply frame it with a choice Japanese maple or two or maybe a beautiful Japanese flowering cherry tree. These may be grown in slightly acidic soil, or in large glazed pots filled with ericaceous compost. Consider some authentic hard landscaping which can include gravel, rocks and stepping stones. One simple

idea would be tying pieces of bamboo together with twine to create Japanese-style fences. Some of the best Japanese gardens use many shades of green to create a calm and serene ambience. The new foliage of Acers such as ‘Shin-Deshojo’ and ‘Emerald Lace’ really lift the display in May, especially if you underplant with the contrasting foliage of the black mondo grass, Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ (RHS AGM). If you want drama with your Acers then opt for the larger leaved varieties such as ‘Bloodgood’, ‘Jordan’ and ‘Orange Dream’ (pictured). If you are looking for some finer leaved Acers we would strongly recommend ‘Garnet’, ‘Crimson Queen’ and ‘Orangeola’. You could also encourage mosses to spread in nooks and crannies – something we usually don’t advocate but in oriental gardens they bask in this authentic setting. You can inject colour into Oriental plots and you won’t go far wrong with stately scented Lilies and

produces an evergreen foliage blanket across the soil with white flowers in early summer. It is also perfect in dense shade and makes a useful foil to your permanent plantings. If you are looking for more plant inspiration consider clump-forming bamboos that grow in tight clumps and are less invasive. There are a few forms of Fargesia available which would be perfect and many of them don’t grow too tall. If space is limited you can even grow them in large pots and this also gives you the opportunity to move them around the garden to change the display and overall effect. Owing to our Buckingham clay, Azaleas and Dwarf Rhododendrons are best grown in large pots. However, we do stock the lime-tolerant Rhododendron Inkarho varieties which have a special rootstock enabling you to grow them in heavy soils or even light sandy alkaline soils. As well as the plants, Oriental gardens benefit from some well-placed props for visual appeal. The sound of running water could come from a self-contained water feature and the coolness it creates would be perfect through the summer months where the sound could be enjoyed. Bridges and stoneware pagodas are the most used structures and they can add welcome height and drama to the landscape. Keeping on the oriental theme, orchids continue to remain popular on the houseplant stakes. Time was when every household in the land had its fair share of house plants – a weeping fig in the sitting room, a rubber plant in the hall and bedroom windowsills awash with cyclamen. The great news is times are changing and we are again embracing houseplants, especially the millennials. We all look for an easy-to-care-for houseplant that has attractive flowers and we seem to have found it in Phalaenopsis, the moth orchid. You’ll see these beauties everywhere now, from supermarkets to garden centres, and at a price that defies belief. For under eleven pounds you can enjoy an arching spray of rounded, waxy flowers that may be anything from pure white to magenta and every shade in between. Choose a plant that has a few flowers already open and many more in bud and you can bank on it lasting from now until well into the summer. The secret is not to overwater it. Although ideally rainwater is its preferred refreshment, even in our hard water area I get away with us-

ing tap water. The main thing to remember is that the plants require a minimal amount. You’ll find they are grown in transparent plastic pots, since many of the fleshy roots enjoy daylight. It is quite sufficient to run the pot under the tap once a week and allow all the water to run off before you pop it back on to its saucer. That really is all there is to it. Water more frequently and you will find that the plant suffers and does not last nearly so long. Other than this, all your moth orchid will ask for is a spot in good indirect light and its leaves will appreciate a quick wipe over when dusty. If you are looking for more advice then do come along to our Orchid Day on Wednesday 27th March with top orchid expert and professional grower Peter White. At 11am and 2pm there will be a couple of Orchid Care Talks, including a repotting demonstration, plus you can bring your orchid in for an MOT. Your orchid repotted cost £3.00, or FREE when you buy a pot and Orchid Focus Repotting Mix. We look forward to seeing you.
