After the shorter leap-month of February, we’ve got a full-on 31 days to enjoy in March – and there’s plenty happening, that’s for sure! March 1st is St David’s Day – a celebration of the life of the patron saint of Wales, and a day to delight in all things Welsh into the bargain. We celebrate on 1st March because that’s the anniversary of his death, way back in 589AD – that’s over 1400 years ago! Many people in Wales participate in parades to mark the occasion, and Welsh people worldwide may well be wearing one of their national symbols – a daffodil or maybe even a leek – showing that they’re taking a pride in their heritage. Another wonderful festival of national identity happens halfway through the month, on Tuesday 17th March – with the Irish celebration of St Patrick’s Day. All things green, shamrocks, Guinness and leprechauns are the order of the day, not just throughout Ireland but all around the globe. On Sunday 22nd, the day has arrived when you can spoil Mum or
Nan, Auntie or Gran – it’s Mothering Sunday. Traditionally the day that children in service could go home to visit their mother, now it’s the perfect excuse to thank that special lady who has always been there for you. Whoever has fulfilled that role in your life - supported you, helped you to realise your potential and been a shoulder to cry on when you needed a little TLC, it’s the perfect time to choose a little gift which will tell her just what she means to you. The following Sunday, 29th March, British Summer Time begins - the clocks will go forward at 1am, so you’ll get an hour less in bed. If you struggle to remember which way the hour goes, it may help to know the saying ‘Spring forward, Fall back’ – thank goodness for phones and laptops, which sort the time out for themselves – it takes me long enough to sort the oven, car and kitchen clocks out!

Ke e p i t g re e n w h e n yo u c l e a n ! !
As the days start to lengthen, the weather starts slowly warming up and bright sunshine floods through my kitchen window, that irresistible urge to start the Spring cleaning hits! It only takes one sunny morning to make those cobwebs show up, fingerprints and smears on the windows become all-too evident and then I’m ready to do battle - armed with a bucketful of cloths, dusters, brushes and potions. Even though it’s tempting to use the strongest, most lethal chemicals available to blitz away the grot, we’ve all got to think green to protect the planet – so it’s a great idea to use repurposed and natural products wherever possible. Here are a few top tips to get amazing results, without costing the earth: • Your kitchen cupboards already contain plenty of ingredients which are also great cleaning products – baking powder, vinegar, lemons and salt are all amazing grime shifters. • Keep your cleaning kit simple – most tasks can be tackled with a few brushes, scourers and some really good cleaning cloths. To keep the green theme, why not repurpose some old clothes? Battered old T-shirts make wonderful dusters – they’re really soft and absorbent, so perfect for polishing, buffing or mopping up spills.
• Boiling water works wonders to keep bugs at bay, it melts through grease and will even make sure your kitchen sink stays blockage-free, if you pour half a kettleful down the plughole every day or two. • If your microwave needs sprucing up, add half a lemon to a small heatproof bowl of water and microwave for 5 minutes, then leave the door closed to let the steam work for ten minutes or so, before switching off at the plug and then wiping up the moisture with soft cloths. • Cleaning windows is easy with a microfibre cloth, hot water and vinegar – if they’re really dirty, then adding a couple of drops of washing up liquid to the solution will get any grime off. The vinegar gives the glass a brilliant shine, and microfibre cloths hold the dirt and work like a chamois leather to prevent streaks. • Keep the loo sparkling clean using baking powder – add a couple of tablespoonsful into the pan, leave it to work for 10 minutes, then pour a mugful of vinegar carefully around the bowl. Let the mixture fizz away for a few minutes, then scrub well with the loo brush, flush and see how spotless it looks, with only natural products! • Keep a spray bottle - filled with a 10% solution of vinegar and water - and a squeegee near your shower cubicle, then it’s quick and easy to give the glass a spray after each shower – saving time and making sure it always looks sparkling!

Centre will be planning celebrations with staff and customers over the next few months and we hope you can come along and take part in some of these through 2020. MUST-DOS Protect new spring shoots, including emerging Hostas, Delphiniums and vegetable seedlings, from slugs and snails. There are plenty of good organic and safe materials you can use including recycled wool waste pellets (Slug Gone) pictured right, coffee grounds, copper tape (on pots and along raised beds), beer traps and Neudorff Sluggo Slug and Snail Killer, based on a natural iron compound. Plant Shallots, Onion sets and early Potatoes in open plots, raised beds and large pots now the soil has started to warm up. Check out our range of over 50 potato varieties, sold loose and in
At last, Spring is in the air in a golden year! As we see the clocks move forward on the 29th March, already the garden is stirring with interest from colourful bulbs and early spring shrubs giving their uplifting displays, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.
50th CELEBRATIONS This year Buckingham Garden Centre celebrates a major milestone of 50 golden years. Back in February 1970 outline planning permission was granted on the eleven-acre site on Tingewick Road. pre-packs, including First Early, Second Early and Main Crop types. Your planted outdoor pots may well benefit from a top-dressing of fresh peat-free compost. If you have long term plants such as Japanese Maples, Camellias, Pieris and conifers in containers then consider using an ericaceous compost (lime-free) to bring up the compost level in the pot. Feeding wise, add a slow release fertiliser such as Osmocote to provide nutrients over the next six months. Keep the hoe moving through the borders to take out emerging weed seeds. Once cleared mulch the ground to keep weeds under control. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials before their main growing season begins – Aster, Coreopsis, Dicentra and Sedum particularly benefit from regular splitting. SUMMER flowering bulbs can be planted from this month onwards. Tough and robust Agapanthus, Amarine Belladiva (summer bulb of the year, pictured top left), Calla,
Gladioli, and Liliums amongst others can be established in the border. If your soil is very heavy clay it would be good to add some potting or horticultural grit to the soil where the bulbs are to be planted. If you have a greenhouse, porch or cool conservatory you can start off your Dahlia tubers in pots or shallow trays. The Dahlia tuber needs to be partially covered with potting compost to help encourage the new shoots from around the old stem of last year. Once emerged these shoots can be used as cutting material so you can increase the number of plants easily, and cheaply, for this summer. PRUNE If you haven’t already completed your pruning of Bush and Climbing roses then this needs to be completed early in March. Remember to accompany your pruning regime with a feed of TopRose or Vitax Q4 to help encourage strong flowering stems. Hold back on pruning spring-flowering shrubs such as Honeysuckle ‘Winter Beauty’ and Forsythia until flowering has finished. The same pruning rule applies to Clematis montana varieties. These flower on wood produced last summer, so cutting plants back directly after flowering not only keeps the plants in shape, it also encourages plenty of new flowering wood.

Check tree ties and stakes. Replace, tighten or slacken the ties where necessary. Mulch and feed shrubs, trees, hedges and climbers after pruning, to give them energy for the extra growth they will put on after cutting back. Cut back Cornus (Dogwood) and Salix (Willow) grown for colourful winter stems to 9in (23cm) from the base all the shoots. This sometimes referred to as coppicing. This may seem brutal, however, it will encourage plenty of good colourful growth this year, which is particularly effective in the winter. HOUSEPLANTS You can start feeding your foliage and flowering houseplants now light levels are increasing. Baby Bio is the often-recommended feed for indoor plants because it contains plenty of nitrogen which encourages strong, leafy growth. All your flowering plants such as Spathiphyllum, Begonias and Stephanotis would benefit from a fertiliser higher in potassium so Phostrogen or a Tomato feed would be perfect to keep them healthy and productive. Your Orchids
will benefit from specialist Focus Orchid feeds or Baby Bio Orchid dripper feeder. SOW in rows in the open ground seeds of round seeded Spinach, Swiss chard, early types of Beetroot, Carrots, Parsnips, Lettuce, Peas, Broad Beans and Turnips. Now is a good time to forward plan your winter crops so consider sowing Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Kale and Brussels Sprouts as space becomes available. The key to a well-planned vegetable plot is continuity, so short rows sown frequently of fast-developing crops such as Lettuce, Radish, Spring Onions and Rocket, will reap delicious rewards. Look out for the new range of Microgreens from Johnsons Seeds which are perfect for sprouting on the windowsill. You can buy a starter kit or simply select from a range of packet seeds including Basil, Beetroot, Coriander, Gourmet Garnish, Fenugreek, Radish, Chard and Rocket. Make a start to plant your chitted Potatoes toward the end of the month in pre-warmed soil or containers. The traditional way is to dig a narrow trench 12cm (5in) deep. This can be lined with compost or even grass clippings for a better crop. The seed tubers are spaced 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop varieties in

rows 60cm (24in) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Keep the emerging tips of the developing potato covered by earthing up around the plant in rows or by simply adding more compost to the pot. SHRUBS All gardens, whatever their size, need some shrub interest. Shrubs create the framework to the garden space; many provide exciting seasonal colour from flowers and/or foliage as well as providing a useful habitat for wildlife. Choice and selection can be bewildering, however good ones to consider if you are planning to add new shrubs to a new plot or existing garden. Look at the following; Aucuba, Berberis, Cotoneaster, Hebe (including ‘Merlot Memories’, our plant of the month at the Garden Centre), Spiraea and Viburnum. Our staff are always happy to help you choose the right plant for your garden. Remember to give the plants the best possible start by improving the planting hole, adding some Tree, Shrub and Rose Planting Compost, a dusting of Bonemeal and RootGrow. Plant to the same depth the plant was grown in the pot and keep the newly established shrubs well-watered throughout the first couple of seasons.

BUCKINGHAM HALF MARATHON
Sunday 17th May sees the fourth Buckingham Half Marathon organised by Buckingham & Stowe Running Club. Starting, and finishing, at Maids Moreton playing fields, competitors from all over the country will run the circular 13.1 mile course through the picturesque villages of Leckhampstead, Wicken, and Akeley and surrounding countryside. As one runner commented last year “It is the most beautiful half marathon I have ever run.” Last year the race raised £8000 for local charities and the beneficiaries of this year’s non-profit making venture are Medical Detection Dogs, Great Horwood, which trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease. It is at the forefront of the research into the fight against cancer and helping people with life-threatening diseases Chairman, Chris Usher said, “The race committee has worked tremendously hard to get this event off the ground and we are indebted to the parish councils
of Maids Moreton and Akeley, Vitalograph, Buckingham Primary School and Buckingham Rugby Club for the use of their premises.” The event is being sponsored by Rainscourt Family Law Solicitors of Milton Keynes, and Buckingham based Bates Body Factory and The Gallery Dental Practice. The organisers would also like to thank Seahawk Trophies, Swan Practice Medical Services, The Ultra Marathon Running Store, BCQ Printers and Tesco for their invaluable contributions. The half marathon starts at 9.30am, so why not come along and cheer on the runners? Or maybe even run the race yourself? Entries will be accepted on the day - £25 cash only.
