Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these

values have been held for over 13 years. Since buying the local franchise in 2006 they have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community whilst introducing their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross into the family business along with Dan, Mark & Jo as demand for their service has grown.

The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills. Due to changing patterns in family life such as partners cohabiting or having second families making a will is becoming ever more important. Unfortunately, even when a will is made problems can arise if it is not drafted carefully. Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will. The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and

emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills. Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected. Making a will with a solicitor needn’t be expensive. At Spratt Endicott, the usual cost for making a single will is £275 plus VAT or £375 plus VAT for mirror wills. If you would like to discuss making, or updating your will please contact Emma Rolfe on 01869 222 315 or erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

POACHER’S PIE

This is a twist on a classic steak and ale pie, swapping out the chunks of beef for mixed, diced game – this could include venison, wild boar, partridge and pheasant pieces. FILLING • vegetable oil 3 tbsp • celery 2 sticks, diced • carrots 2 large, diced • onion 1 large, diced • garlic 2 cloves, crushed • bay leaf 1 • rosemary 1 sprig • thyme 2 sprigs • mixed diced game meat 500g (order from a local butcher) Step 1 Heat the oil in a casserole over a medium heat and fry the vegetables, garlic and herbs until golden, then scoop out onto a plate. Toss the game meat in the seasoned flour and brown in batches, until really golden, then scoop out onto a plate.

14

BRITISH PIE WEEK Step 2 Pour in the stout and scrape all the chewy bits off the bottom of the casserole with a wooden spoon. Add the stock and prunes, along with the browned meat and vegetables, lower the heat and cook gently for 2 hours or until the meat is very tender. Tip into a pie dish and cool. Step 3 For the pastry, mix the flour and suet together in a large bowl. Add 100-120ml of cold water and a good pinch of salt, and work by hand until the dough comes together – don’t overwork it and let it become sticky. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes. Heat the oven to 200C/ fan 180C/gas 6. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured worksurface until

All systems go for action Longer days, bulbs producing their fine blooms and the warmth of sunshine mean just one thing - the merry month of March has arrived, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. VEG SOWINGS At the start of last year’s first lockdown vegetable growing really took off. So, don’t delay as early spring is a rewarding time to sow or plant vegetables, whether you’re starting a new garden or popping a few Lettuce in to a sunny window box. Veggies and herbs to sow now include Cabbage, Carrot, Broad Beans

Woodlands Logs & Kindling DELIVERED LOCALLY 0844 4141174 18

and Lettuce but we’ll have to wait a little while till after the last frosts to include summer salad veggies such as Tomato, Pepper or Chilli, Cucumber and Basil. You can start germinating these on a sunny warm windowsill from the end of this month if you fancy growing your own from seed. PREPARATION is the key as we start the growing season. However, one of the most rewarding tasks to do right now is to get rid of the weeds before they start growing with renewed vigour. Hand weed or hoe out new and emerging weeds regularly as weather conditions allow. Target persistent weeds such as Bindweed and Ground Elder with spot herbicide treatments. If you are not adverse to using Glysophate, use Roundup, now renamed Fast Action Round-up, as this is the only really effective weedkiller against these weeds. For Brambles, Nettles, Hedera (Ivies) and woody weeds we would suggest using SBK Brushwood Killer. This product is a foliar acting herbicide which is best applied later in the spring to be most effective. FEED FOR GROWTH Gardeners love to nurture their gardens. Early spring is the best time of the year to give everything in the garden a good dose of fertiliser. After the next substantial fall of rain in early March, scatter slow-release or pelletised fertiliser around the base of your plants. Good feeding products to use include Miracle-Gro Continuous Release and Vitax Q4. If you prefer to garden organically then opt for Blood, Fish and Bone fertiliser but do bear in mind this doesn’t contain the micro-nutrients – the so-called trace elements which will benefit many plants, including lime-hating plants like Camellias, Pieris and Acers. As these feeds break down and filter into the soil, they are absorbed by

growing roots and used to fuel growth and flowering. LOVELY LAWN Apply a slow-release complete lawn food such as Evergreen® Complete 4 in 1 to all grass areas. This product encourages a much thicker, tougher lawn, plus it kills weeds, moss and feeds lawns. You can apply this from April onwards. Apply at a dose of 35g per square metre (1oz per sq. yard) for best results. Use a metal rake to remove any build-up of thatch (the term used to describe dead growth giving lawns a spongy feel underfoot). If the lawn is looking sparse, re-seed (pictured) or re-turf bare areas. Before seeding, dig in organic matter and treat the area with a soil wetting agent such as Broadleaf P9 or Water Saving Gel. if your soil is light and fast draining. Our Buckingham clay soils would benefit from some John Innes No. 1

Compost to provide a perfect seed bed for new grass seedlings. Keep everyone off areas that are being renovated until the new grass is growing vigorously. PRUNE FOR SUCCESS Plants that have already bloomed or have frost damage can be pruned to encourage new growth. The general rule is to prune flowering shrubs directly after flowering so avoiding the possibility of removing flowering wood by mistake. Also, if not already done, remove old stems from perennials and grasses to make way for fresh spring growth. To keep shrubs, perennials and annuals in bloom over the months ahead, remove spent flowers regularly unless they would produce attractive hips or berries later if the spent flowers are left on.

EASY COLOUR Flowering spring annuals can be sown now to give your garden a quick fix from late May onwards. Good hardy annuals to sow directly into the borders include Calendula, Godetia, Larkspur and Nasturtium. Add instant colour with pots and hanging baskets using Pansies, Polyanthus, named Primrose varieties, Violas and Senetti (arriving soon), or flowering pots of bulbs such as Daffodils and Tulips. Also, plan ahead for flowers and invest in trays of hardier bedders such as Antirrhinums, Asters and Dianthus. If you have some undercover protection, then half-hardy bedding plants can be purchased as young seedlings or slightly larger plug plants for growing on in large pots or hanging baskets for strategic bursts of colour. PLANT, PLANT, PLANT Early spring is a rewarding time to plant trees, shrubs and annuals –

it is also the last opportunity to get bare-rooted hedging, rose bushes, fruit trees and soft fruit (including Blackcurrants such as this variety ‘Big Ben’) planted before they come out of winter dormancy. Elsewhere in the garden take stock now and remove plants that have died or are past their best, or re-design your garden to accommodate some new plantings. Prepare for new plants by clearing any weeds and grass, then improve the soil by digging into it some organic matter such as Tree, Shrub and Rose Planting Compost. When working out where to place a new plant take into account the amount of space that will be required eventually. Always check plant labels - either on the pot or attached to the plant for information on eventual plant size both in height and spread. A CLEAN SWEEP Warmer weather will soon mean more time spent outside eating and relaxing. Check outdoor furniture and outdoor sitting areas in preparation for those convivial times ahead. need to be repainted or re-oiled. Nuts and bolts should be checked and tightened. Canvas chairs may need to be cleaned or re-covered. Also, clean the barbecue and replenish gas bottles. Paving and other hard surfaces benefit from a vigorous sweep to remove accumulated leaves and dirt. Mossy or slippery paths, a real problem again this year after a wet winter, can be cleaned and treated with a product such as Resolva Mosskiller (available in a 1-litre and 3-litre size, pictured). If your paths are weedy then it would be useful to treat the vegetation before it starts growing away this spring. Use Weedol Pathclear on permeable surfaces or Weedol Rootkill Plus or another general weedkiller on impermeable surfaces.

replant into the old pot but with fresh potting compost such as Levington® Original Multi-Purpose Compost. Specialist plants such as Cacti, Citrus and Orchids, would benefit from using their own specific composts and fertilisers, pictured Cacti Feed.

REPOT AND FEED FOR GROWTH Generally speaking, container-grown plants, including indoor house plants, which have been in the same pot for several years, or that have outgrown their current pot, can be re-potted now. Place plants into slightly larger pots with fresh potting mix or trim roots and

Press Release from Buckinghamshire Council

A tree for every woman, man and child in Buckinghamshire

The next steps of an ambitious programme to plant a tree for every resident in Bucks took a step closer to fruition last night after Cabinet agreed plans to progress the scheme. The large scale tree planting aims to see approximately 543,000 trees planted on large sites of councilowned land over the next ten years in a bid to address climate change in Buckinghamshire. It is planned that the scheme, which links to the Climate Change Strategy, would see the council becoming carbon neutral by 2050 or earlier. Bill Chapple OBE, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “I’m delighted that Cabinet has given their full backing to this fantastic programme. We’re committed to tackling climate change issues and improving air quality in Buckinghamshire and these trees will play a crucial role in offsetting our emissions, as well as all the other benefits they will deliver. “Trees enhance our environments, they provide biodiversity benefits not only by providing food and water but also giving our birds, bats, mammals, insects, fungi and butterflies homes, playgrounds, and hiding spots from predators. These new woodland areas will create more space for nature to

grow and thrive and will improve public health and wellbeing.

“As the project progresses we will look at how we can involve our communities and schools so that we can all work together on community tree planting, and play our part in making Bucks greener and cleaner for generations to come.” Once the sites have been finalised, work will begin on designing detailed creation plans to ensure that the right tree is planted in the right place. The council will ensure it secures the available grant funding for both planning and creating these woodlands in order to offset some of the cost of buying and planting the trees. The woodlands will be designed in accordance with the Woodland Carbon Code to provide assurance on the levels of carbon being captured.

75% of the tree planting would take place over the next five years starting during the next planting season which is December 2021 to March 2022. Once delivered in full, the project has the potential to create at least 200 hectares of new woodland in Buckinghamshire, that’s the equivalent of 285 full sized football pitches or the size of Monaco. Tree planting in our parks, open spaces and along highways will continue outside and beyond this project.
