C h o o s i n g a Fa m i ly L aw ye r Few people consult a family lawyer before they need to do so and, for that reason, the process of choosing one to support and represent you at a difficult and stressful time can feel rather rushed. Many of our clients come to us through recommendation from a family member, friend or work colleague, but a significant number will look for a family lawyer through local publications, organisations or the internet.

When choosing a family lawyer, we would recommend looking for one who can demonstrate experience and expertise of your specific circumstances, provide a clear indication of the likely costs involved in your matter, and be relied upon to communicate well and give regular updates on the progress of your case.

Divorce, separation and issues around children are often emotional, complex and can take time to resolve. This is why it is vital to choose a solicitor that you feel will provide you with the best level of service and support and one who understands your situation.

Spratt Endicott Solicitors offer clients a fixed fee initial meeting at ÂŁ95 (including VAT) at any of our four offices in Banbury, Brackley, Bicester or Buckingham. For more information please contact Sobiah Hussain on 01869 222320 or email shussain@se-law.co.uk.

Scouting success in Buckingham and Winslow Scout District Were you ever a Scout or Guide? Are you aware that Scouting is for boys and girls now? Do you appreciate how many young people are enjoying the Scouting experience locally today? In our District we have seen a steady growth in the number of youth members over the past few years and currently have 601 youth members supported by 141 adult members (Source: Scout Association Annual Census 2019). Young people of all abilities can join as Beaver Scouts from the age of 6 years and progress through the sections, Cubs at 8 years, Scouts at 10 ½ years and Explorer Scouts at 14 ½ years. Scouting will enable them to achieve skills for life, make friends and have much fun. Some will have the opportunity to travel locally, nationally and internationally to camp and experience different cultures in many different settings. Leaders are offered training in all aspects of their role and many achieve additional nationally recognised qualifications that enable them to lead more adventurous activities. Our Section Assistants undertake basic training to equip them to be proactive in the running of the section. Each section plans and

delivers a varied programme of activities at the weekly meetings which enable the young people to develop skills that can then be transferred to specific activities or to everyday life. Supporting each Group is a Group Scout Leader who acts as a manager to the Leaders and is responsible for ensuring the group is run safely. To enable the leadership team to concentrate on delivering Scouting to the young people every Group has an Executive Committee, a body of people from all walks of life who support the Group by fundraising, helping to maintain buildings and many other ways. Scouting in our area has become so popular that many Groups have waiting lists for all sections and we welcome any adults who would like to volunteer as a Leader or Executive Committee Member to enable us to use our volunteers most effectively and ensure that we can offer Scouting to even more young people. If you would like to find out more please contact our District Commissioner: steveelliottbwd@gmail.com .

November is a month that whizzies by..... November is a month that whizzes by in a flurry of shorter days, chilly evenings and debates over whether to turn up the heating or put on another jumper! It’s a month that has certainly seen some very interesting occurrences throughout history, though; here are a few that really captured my attention:

Rioting broke out in Germany on 6th November 1923, as the financial crisis had reached epic proportions. This was due to hyperinflation, which had been caused by the government printing masses of extra banknotes to try to counteract the effects of a widespread general strike. Paper money became almost worthless, with the price of everyday things increasing beyond all imagination. Something as basic as a loaf of bread increased in price by over 60 million percent in just 11 months, bringing the cost to over 200 million Reichsmarks by the start of November. The government was in crisis and it took the appointment of a new finance minister, Hans Luther, and creation of a new reserve bank and currency, the Rentenmark, to stabilise the situation. 7th November 1872 was the day the Mary Celeste, a

merchant ship captained by Benjamin Briggs, sailed from New York City. She was headed for Genoa with her crew and a cargo of alcohol, but was found abandoned about four weeks later, off the Azores. Nobody was on board, her sails and ropes were in disarray and one of her lifeboats and some of the ship’s instruments were missing. Her captain and crew were never seen again, and many mysteries were dreamed up about what may have happened to them, with insurance fraud, piracy, mutiny and attack by a giant squid among the possible theories to their demise. On 14th November 1889, Nellie Bly, a daring newspaper reporter for the New York World, set off on a round-the-world trip. Her aim was to complete this epic journey in less time than Phileas Fogg – the hero of Jules Verne’s famous 1873 novel Around the World in 80 days. As a single woman travelling alone, this was a particularly brave attempt – and she completed it in amazing time, beating her own target as well as Jules Verne’s legendary one. She arrived home in 72 days, 6 hours and 14 minutes – quite an astounding achievement!

With Bonfire Night just a few da With Bonfire Night just a few days away, it’s great to wrap up warm, enjoy the fireworks, toast marshmallows on the bonfire and wave a sparkler or two – so we have a few top tips to make it memorable, for all the right reasons!

• If you’ve built your bonfire pile before the night, check it thoroughly before lighting – look for small creatures, like hedgehogs and voles, which may have crawled underneath

• Let the neighbours know in advance, if you’re going to be letting off fireworks in the garden, so they can shut any sensitive pets safely away in the house • Put your garden fireworks into a metal tin with a lid and take them out individually as needed

• Site each firework on a flat, non-flammable surface, light with a taper and stand back to a safe distance • Don’t go back to a lit firework which didn’t

• Make sure your bonfire is well away from anything which could catch light and check the wind strength and direction won’t take sparks towards anything flammable • Never use petrol or flammable liquids to get the fire started – firelighters or scrunched-up newspaper work well outdoors • Have a garden fork handy, to rearrange any burning wood which slides down once the fire is alight • Although it’s tempting to have a good sort-out for the bonfire, don’t burn anything which may contain plastics, aerosols or batteries as they can become lethal when they are exposed to flames • Keep several buckets of water or a fire extinguisher handy, just in case 16

go off – it might suddenly ignite in your face • Make sure kids are supervised at all times and wear gloves to hold sparklers, and keep a bucket of water ready for the sticks, once the sparkles have finished • Public fireworks displays are great fun and much less hassle, if you’d rather not have your Bonfire night celebrations at home – check our Information page to find a display near you!

PUTTING THE GARDEN TO BED There’s no doubt the garden undergoes plenty of change as we go into November, but there’s lots of opportunities to enjoy and tasks to get on with, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Pruning, preparation and protection are the three key words for the garden just now. There are some plants that should be pruned in the autumn - these include Beech, Hawthorn and Hazel. It’s worth trimming back climbing and shrub roses by half to help stop wind rock affecting your plants. Vigorous growers like Buddleja, Dogwoods and Lavatera can be reduced by half to again lessen problems of wind rock over the winter. The most important part of autumn pruning is removing any dead, diseased, or misplaced branches. Always aim to make a clean cut, either back to just above a bud on living wood, or back to the stem it’s growing from. After pruning, scatter a few handfuls of bonemeal around the root area of shrubs to stimulate root growth over winter, and mulch

with some garden compost. As long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged, keep planting out pot-grown hardy climbers, perennials, shrubs and trees - but you must remember to water them through the winter. It’s also a good time to plant bare root specimens which are usually cheaper to buy, and of course, you get to select a wide range of species, often available in many good planting sizes. Check out availability at www.hedging.co.uk LATE SOWINGS Sow some broad beans! These beans, which are also known as ‘fava’ beans, are a cool weather crop and can be sown in autumn or early spring to give a succession of pods to pick from early, to mid-summer and they are delicious! They like a deep, rich, moist but free draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Some varieties can grow

... to around 90cm high, so make sure you prepare for this when choosing a spot to plant them. If your garden gets a lot of wind, then you may be better to grow a dwarf variety - such as ‘The Sutton’. Once they’re planted you can look forward to harvesting them come late spring but make sure you pick them before the beans grow huge (beans should be about the size of a thumbnail when popped from their pod). If you haven’t already sown some Sweet Peas, now would be a good time! Sow one to two seeds per cardboard tube, Root Trainer, or in a multi-cell tray in a good seed and sowing compost and provide some protection in either a porch, cold frame or greenhouse through the winter months. Early winter sown Sweet Peas will flower a month or so earlier than those Sweet Peas sown in the spring. LAWNS Rake and gather up leaves that are falling on the lawn, beds and in your pond, doing this regularly to

keep on top of this task. If you missed feeding the lawn last month, don’t worry as you can do it through this month. Evergreen Lawn Feed and Moss Killer is always best applied when the weather is fair, the soil is moist and the grass is dry and frost free. COVER UP Provide some horticultural fleece protection for half-hardy shrubs, including Palms, Olive Trees and Callistemon. Tree Ferns and Bananas will benefit from some additional insulation, perhaps in the form straw lagging, to encase the stem as well as to help protect the crown of the plant. Keeping the plants drier through the winter months is essential and house them in a well-lit garage or shed. SPRING COLOUR It’s your last chance to plant some tulip bulbs! By planting them this late in the year you’ll have a much better chance of preventing the bulbs being

infected with the fungal disease, tulip fire. Just don’t leave it too late – try to get them planted right at the start of the month. They are best planted in a lightly shaded spot that gets more sun as spring progresses. WILDLIFE PLANTING If you are planning to re-vamp a border this winter, its worth having a list of bee and butterfly friendly plants to hand to help attract more wildlife into our plots. Do please ask at the Plant Information Office for our range of wildlife leaflets to help you plan. We do try and give inspiration on encouraging wildlife with our plant area displays, however at this late stage of the season Achillea, Coreopsis, Michaelmas Daisies, Helenium and Penstemons are still providing some interest. Elsewhere make sure that your bird feeders are topped up, there is a good supply of fresh water for the birds available and that clean nest boxes are in place.

WELCOME COLOUR Look out for a range of glorious 60cm tall standard Hollies, Skimmia, Mahonia (including the varieties ‘Winter Sun’, ‘Soft Caress’, pictured, and ‘Charity’) and grasses perfect for creating colourful welcoming colour to the front of your home. Don’t forget to add a few winter hardy pansies and violas to provide pockets of colour. INDOOR CULTURE Give houseplants extra care over winter. Reduce watering and stand on trays of gravel with a small amount of water in the base to help increase humidity. Ensure they are not placed in the way of cold draughts and dead head regularly. Remove dead, dying or diseased leaves as soon as you spot them. Continue to feed your plants with Baby Bio, however reduce to once every three weeks through the winter.

TIDY AND CLEAN Wash slippery surfaces. Algae, moss and other grime can easily be removed by scrubbing with water and a few drops of a specialist cleaner, such Evergreen Patio Magic.
