The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills.
Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will.
Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected.
The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills.

World Smile Day
As we tumble into Autumn, it’s lovely to have another reason to be cheerful – and the first Friday in October is World Smile Day®- when we can all make a real difference, just by helping others. Founded by the creator of the wellknown Smiley face, Harvey Ball, World Smile Day was first celebrated in 1999 and ever since then, people all around the world have used this day to make a special effort to do just one kind deed, or something that will make another person smile. As you may have guessed, Harvey Ball was from the US – from Worcester, Massachusetts, to be precise – and he invented that Smiley face with a special place in our hearts - and text messages - way back in 1963! Of course, it was an instant success, even way back then; as it is culturally and gender neutral it appeals to everyone, everywhere as a symbol of happiness.
Over time, Harvey became worried that the true spirit of what he had created Smiley for was being lost through over-commercialisation of the image, so he decided to pull Smiley back to his roots. He created a special day to celebrate every year, to encourage everyone to focus on those important values which Smiley was created to embody. After Harvey’s death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established, to continue the work he started in promoting world kindness. So, what can you do to celebrate this year, on Friday 5th? How about making Smiley cupcakes, and taking them into work, school or to share with friends? Maybe host a children’s party, with Smiley face painting, or decorated balloons, or how about getting together and making a giant human Smiley? I like the idea of ‘paying it forward’ – doing a kind deed ‘just because’,
in the hope that the recipient will do the same for someone else – maybe just opening a door for someone, buying their morning coffee or paying for their car parking if they don’t have the right change? It’s got to be a good thing, if we’re making the world a kinder and more thoughtful place, that’s the Smiley philosophy - so what will you choose to do this World Smile Day?

Getting creative with you
A wise old gardener once told me, “the one thing you can be sure of in life is change”. Gardening reinforces this message all the time, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. If you’ve had a garden or gardens over the years you know that each one can be a personal challenge. Choosing the right plants for the location, the soil type and your own plants’ wish list makes for a journey into the unknown. Over the years you’ll be able to build
on experience of growing things and which plants have or have not performed to their best. It is these sets of challenges we find enduring about the way we perceive our garden space, what it can bring to our lives and what we can pass on to future budding gardeners in our families. If you think I’m getting a bit “Monty Don”, then I won’t apologise as his vision of gardening, often vented on Gardeners’ World, is extremely similar to my own. If your garden has simply evolved rather than been meticulously drawn and planned to the nth degree then I suspect you will be in the majority and there is nothing wrong (or right) about that approach.
The autumn is the favoured season for change, in fact many garden commentators say this is the start of the new gardening year as we enter the prime time to transplant our plants and / or simply plant afresh. No more so is this true then when it comes to our pots and hanging baskets but what are the best plants

They’re only suitable for autumn displays, however, as the first proper frost will kill them off, but if you bring them inside – to an unheated conservatory or enclosed porch – they should continue to flower for a few more weeks. Bedding cyclamen The cyclamen we’re talking about here are not the hardy ones, but the miniature florists’ cyclamen that are sold in trays or small pots for autumn bedding. To create your display, stand the pots inside a larger container – plunge plant them - so don’t tip them out or disturb the roots as that brings

flowering to an early end. As with the outdoor chrysanthemums, these are killed by the first hard frost, but they will last all winter if moved indoors to a conservatory or cool room. Ornamental greens Decorative brassicas that form rosettes of plain or frilly foliage – such as cabbages and kale – make a useful foil for winter heathers and last late into winter/early spring. Blooming pansies Various kinds of pansies and violas are sold in flower during autumn. Many stop blooming when conditions turn cold, but true winter-flowering
pansies will keep blooming until late spring, with only short breaks during very cold spells. Do keep them regularly deadheaded. Flowering heathers These are my top choice as they handle bad weather well and have a long flowering season, from November to March. They come in various colours, including white, pink, mauve and purple, while varieties with orange or golden foliage are also available. Most heathers are lime-hating, however for Buckinghamshire clay Erica carnea and E. x darleyensis will tolerate our neutral to alkaline
soils. Winter heathers team well with evergreen shrubs, including berrying kinds such as Pernettya and Gaultheria. After flowering, replant in the garden if required. Evergreen perennials Many compact or trailing perennials with good evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage can be used for your winter pot displays – and then you can plant them in the garden next spring. Year-round shrubs The low-trailing Gaultheria procumbens is a popular evergreen, with large red berries, while the evergreen Sarcoccoca hookeriana humilis will give you fragrant, winter flowers on upright stems. Trained hollies and potted topiary make great stand-alone specimens in pots. Bulb colour Don’t miss the opportunity to add bulbs to your planters adopting the popular Lasagne or layered method. The bulbs that flower last in the spring, such as Alliums and Tulips need to go the bottom of the pot working through three or so layers to the top of the container. From the bottom Tulips, Alliums, then Daffodils (Narcissi), and finally Hyacinths and Crocus work particularly well together. Look out for the Crocus ‘Prins Claus’, this season’s Bulb of the Year. Invaluable ivy Ivies are brilliant if you want to hide the edges of hanging baskets, and they’re great teamed with mixed winter bedding plants or potted evergreens in more formal displays. Small, variegated evergreen Euonymus plants are also good for this.
