The aim of the monthly Life in Brackley Magazine is to support businesses in order that the local community can flourish.

After a warm and sunny September, we’re looking forward to getting cosy as we head into Autumn, enjoying the misty mornings and a crisp chill as the nights draw in. The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills. Due to changing patterns in family life such as partners cohabiting or having second families making a will is becoming ever more important. Unfortunately, even when a will is made problems can arise if it is not drafted carefully. Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will. The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and

emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills. Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected. Making a will with a solicitor needn’t be expensive. At Spratt Endicott, the usual cost for making a single will is £275 plus VAT or £375 plus VAT for mirror wills. If you would like to discuss making, or updating your will please contact Emma Rolfe on 01869 222 315 or erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

Eco-friendly Halloween With Halloween just around the corner, I’m mixing things up a bit this year. I want to put up the usual mad and spooky decorations, but I’m keen to avoid the mountains of plastic and keep things a bit more eco-friendly! I’ve come up with some upcycling ideas and compostable creations, which will look great on the day but won’t hurt the environment – or your bank balance!

Pumpkin spiders A pumpkin just shouts Halloween, so it’s great that they’re cheap to buy, fun to carve and then completely home-compostable – they’ll rot down to give goodness back to your garden in just a few months. Choose a smaller pumpkin, cut off the top, scoop out the middle and carve a spooky face, then push 4 L-shaped sticks into each side to create scary spider legs. A rechargeable tealight placed in the centre provides a safe flickering glow, and you could make a few spooky spiders to line your garden path, or one for either side of the front door. Floating ghosts This one is super-cheap and simple to make, so even the smallest children will love helping to create it! Just get an ordinary white balloon, inflate to about 2/3 full –

so it’s easy to knot the neck – and tie on some string to hang it from. Pop a few pieces of double sided sticky tape on the neck end of the balloon and remove the backing. Take a recycled piece of white fabric – maybe cut from an old school shirt or pillowcase – and hang it over the balloon, making a hole in the centre for the string to be pushed through. Press it over the sticky tape, to ensure it stays in place. Now you can draw on your spooky face with black marker pen, or stick on glow-in-the-dark scary eyes…….and you’re done! Hanging from a tree or bracket outside your house, these little ghosts look really effective as they blow about in the breeze. Witch’s cauldron Fun to make, looks great and it’s edible too – what’s not to like about a bowlful of gory body parts floating in yucky green slime?! You’ll need – a large glass bowl, some garden wire, 2 packs of lime jelly, gummy eyeballs and wiggly worm sweets. Make the wire into a loop and put this around the top of the bowl, under the rim. Twist the ends together, bringing the long end up and over to make a handle shape. Mix up two packs of lime jelly with a little extra water for a more gooey gloop, add the eyeballs and a few worm sweets, pop into the bowl and leave to set in the fridge. After a couple of hours, bring it out to decorate with a few more ‘worms’ climbing out of the cauldron and enjoy!

Mixed Bag Of Weather

After the mixed bag of weather of late summer, the autumn is now definitely here for real, and it feels distinctly cooler. It’s a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. However, there’s much to do so you can enjoy the garden now and into next spring, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Harking back to my college days and remembering the prudent advice that the month of October is the beginning of the gardening cycle, so for horticultural students and home gardeners there’s plenty to be getting on with! For some of us it is a time to prepare, plant and develop gardens or take on mini makeover projects. In

real life, though, gardening is more about the here and now and for many, rightly or wrongly, a time to put the garden to bed for the winter. Yes, there are certainly things that you have to do – autumn feed the lawn, clear unsightly fallen leaves, clear your beds, pots or borders of short-term bedding and seasonal plants, repair/replace fences, and cut back plants to help maintain their shape for the next growing season. The nights may be drawing in but that’s no excuse as to why we cannot enjoy our plots to the full this month. The last couple of years have proved perfect for weekend BBQs or maybe to set up a fire bowl in October and let’s face it, I’m reluctant to close the back-patio doors and miss out on all the blooming flowers and scents just now. If you can, try and extend

r the season by adding some lights to your garden. Increased battery technology means many solar lights can perform well this month, however low voltage lighting and even battery lights may provide an attractive proposition. If you are planning a major all mains lit garden, do the sensible thing and call in a qualified electrician and make sure the lighting you select is specifically designed for outside use. HIGHLIGHTING If you have a pond or water feature, why not add some submerged LED lighting to create an atmospheric glow? You could also dress specimen plants, says bay trees, palms or olive trees with some solar light strings. Up lighters are particularly useful for giving individual plants dramatic effect. NATURAL LIGHT Traditional candles, tea lights and glass lanterns usually provide sufficient lighting around your seated patio or deck area. Tea lights come in a variety of sizes

and options; however, you might find the citronella ones useful at deterring the midges and mosquitoes! PEST-FREE RELAXING There are of course some natural and attractive insect repellents you could plant instead of using a mozzie spray. Good effective candidates would be Lavender, Rosemary (pictured) and Thyme. These could be used as individuals, or buy a reasonably sized pot and surround it with other herbs to help deter the flying nuisances around your seated areas. BRIGHTENING YOUR BORDER One of the best ways of creating an illusion of space, shimmer and shine to the garden is to plant a bold group of white flowers. Large flowered white Japanese Anemones such as ‘Honorine Jobert’ , Shasta Daisies, Dahlias, Michaelmas Daisies and even climbing Trachelospermum Jasminoides will produce an ethereal glow. Don’t just rely on flowers, foliage can play a great part in the illusion,

especially the silvery foliage of perennial Artemisia ‘Powys Castle’, shrubby Convolvulus cneorum, seasonal bedder Cineraria maritima, herbs such as the Curry Plant (Helichrysum italicum) and Cotton Lavender (Santolina chamaecyparissus) or ground-covering lamb’s ears, Stachys lanata. These foliage beauties, including the silvery Heuchera ‘Silver Celebration’, really look good when bathed in LED light!

for winter planter displays, including colourful winter flowering Pansies, Violas, Bellis daisies, Miracle mini Cyclamen and Chrysanthemums. You can intersperse your displays effectively with evergreen foliage plants such as Ajuga, Creeping Jenny, ornamental grasses such as Carex ‘Prairie Fire’ and Festuca as well as colourful conifers including lemon scented Cupressus ‘Goldcrest’ and the silvery blue Chamaecyparis ‘Boulevard’.

KEEP WARM If you plan to sit outside at dusk and later then some natural warmth is going to be required. Those gas patio heaters are definitely a no-no these days, so opt instead for an eco-friendly fire pit or chiminea where you can make use of your large woody prunings (dried of course). Not only do fire pits look attractive, you can enjoy relative safety as the open flame is protected by a grill dome. Don’t forget to have a warm blanket to hand and make sure there’s plenty of marshmallow to toast!

DOUBLE DECKER Larger and deeper pots provide the perfect excuse to layer plant your bulbs – a process sometimes referred to as lasagne planting - which helps to extend the season of interest from a few weeks to a couple or more months. Put your biggest bulbs in first - if you were planting an Iris, Narcissus and Tulip combination, the Tulips would go on the bottom. They can be packed in quite closely, providing they don’t touch. Cover with a 5cm layer of compost, then add the Narcissus. Cover as before and finish with a layer of Iris such as ‘Katharine Hodgkin’. If you like, you could also add some Grape Hyacinths and Crocus to this

CHANGING SEASONS Patio pots will no doubt require a re-vamp after the summer season. There are so many options available
