A Fairtrade Town 4
It seems that Autumn has well and truly arrived as there’s been a definite chill in the air in recent mornings. After the house has been attacked by some high temperatures, some extreme rainfall, and some excited children over the summer months, we’ve been checking around our home to see if any repairs are necessary before winter sets in. Usually our guttering needs a bit of attention and we always get the roof checked over so it’s in tip-top condition before any snow falls. Our boiler gets its annual service this month and we usually hang heavier curtains at our especially draughty windows (must get those looked at as well!). The garden gets a once over too – the furniture is treated and stored away and many of our plants need some sort of attention. The idea of fitting in all these extra home maintenance jobs is overwhelming to say the least, particularly as we’re as busy as ever right now at In Business magazines (thank you to everyone for your continued support!). Thankfully, we are lucky to have some fantastic local businesses to help take the pressure off. Have a flick through this month’s magazine to find someone who can help you. They all come highly recommended! You can read all our mags on ISSUU – just go to our website & click on the link. Or find us on Facebook – click through from our Homepage or go to www.facebook.com/mandy.bib
If you are a member of a local Charity or Community Organisation, don’t forget our What’s On page – we’ll list details of your special events, open days and fundraisers on there for free, so do get in touch and let us know what you’re doing for NOVEMBER.

Following the sporting enthusiasm generated by the amazing London Olympics, more and more people are taking up running. It’s a great sport to get into – it’s cheap (just the cost of some trainers and something suitable to wear), it’s convenient (you can run almost any place and at any time), and almost anyone can do it! Starting to run after a long break or for the first time is a tough challenge, both mentally and physically, but the benefits are well worth the effort. Studies have shown that running reduces your chances of getting everything from the common cold to cancer. It’s one of the best aerobic activities you can do so keeps your heart and lungs healthy and is a proven stress reliever. If you need to lose a pound or two, running is a very efficient way to burn calories. It’s advisable to have medical checks before you get started, just to be on the safe side. You should also get the right running shoes for your

foot type to make sure you can run in comfort and without the risk of injury. Specialist running stores will offer advice and help you find the right running shoes. Then you’re good to go... well, almost! Before you begin to pound the streets, find a beginner’s running program on the Internet. This will help you to build up your stamina and skills gradually and safely. Try The Couch to 5k Running Plan – you’ll ease into the program with lots of walking and running and will be running 5k (that’s 3 miles) on a regular basis in just two months. If you need a little more encouragement, contact your local running club. These often hold beginner sessions and the more experienced runners will be more than happy to support you. Before you know it, you’ll be entering your first 5k race!

Inclusive Design Solutions. GD Cooper Architectural Services provide a design and planning service producing architectural drawings for planning applications, building control and for general renovations and home adaptions. I have been involved in the construction industry since leaving school in 1988, when I trained as a plumber. An accident at work 9 years ago left me needing to use a wheelchair and my career had to change direction. A three year degree course in Architectural Technology has allowed me to utilize the wealth of experience built up over the years. This experience along with a first class degree and two other C.A.D qualifications enables me to approach a client’s project from both a practical and technical perspective. GD Cooper Architectural Services also provide a specialist design service for elderly and disabled clients needing to adapt their home to better cater for their individual needs. My personal experience of having to adapt my own home to cater for my disability; alongside the qualifications and experience, puts me in a position to not only provide the service that you need but also understand and appreciate the day to day benefits of good design.

GD Cooper Architectural is uniquely able to offer an inclusive design solution for all.
Customer Recommendation I have recently employed Gary to undertake the drawings for my recent house extension, I found him to be very knowledgeable, extremely efficient and always on hand for help and advice, highly recommend. Jim Docherty, Brackley

Student Money Saves Going to university and living on a budget can be hard, especially when the student union bar beckons. However there are some ways to save on the boring stuff so there’s just enough to spend on having fun! Cooking from scratch and buying in bulk is far cheaper than eating out or buying ready meals. If you can club together with other students to buy and cook food, even better. Don’t pay more than you need to on your contents insurance – many students are already covered on their parents’ policy. Ask them to check. The BBC television licence fee can be avoided if you only watch on-demand TV over the Internet (think iplayer etc) as the licence is for watching or recording programs as they are broadcast. If you do buy a licence, you can claim back for the three months you won’t need it over the summer. Earn and save at the same time by getting a job in a place where you’d normally spend money. If you work in Topshop, you get up to 25% off all Arcadia Group products and Asda employees get 10% off their food purchases for example. Jen Oakton

Bulbs for bees There are plenty of opportunities to help our struggling bee population next spring if you plan your spring bulb plantings now, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Over the summer, there’s been a distinct sound of honey bees humming at the Garden Centre for all the right reasons. Back in early May two bee hives were “installed” with over 10,000 bees introduced to their new hives. So good has been their settling in process we are looking forward to our first taste of honey very soon. Their establishment has been nothing short of amazing, albeit when they arrived all our fruit trees were laden with their tempting blossom and the rest of the garden centre was filled with a cornucopia of
22
seasonal flowers. What we could not have predicted was the cool wet summer which has caused major problems, especially for farmers and growers, as the lack of bee activity, coupled with some severe late frosts has certainly hit many fruit crops this year. Incredibly, our bees have settled in well, despite the awful weather conditions. However, we are upbeat that our Apple Weekend, which this year is over the 6th & 7th October, will generate the continuing interest in growing fruit as well as celebrating the English apple. This year we have one of the country’s best apple identification experts, John Edgeley, who will be on hand throughout the event. Visitors are encouraged to bring along their apples for identification, ideally 2-3 fruits per variety if you can, from the tree.

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133 There is no charge for this service; however it can take time so you will need to be patient! Fritz De Zutter from Moulton College will be offering topical fruit advice plus tips on rootstock selection for the garden. There should be a good display of apple varieties (crops and weather allowing!), together with some apple fruits for sale, plus plenty of apple trees to buy, including trained forms such as step-overs, espaliers and bushes. Also there will be entertainment and competitions for younger members of the family as well! However, what sets our event apart to previous Apple Weekends will be highlighting the importance of encouraging bees into the garden and bee keeping for fruit pollination. Some educational displays will be set up, with bee expert, Farokh Khorooshi on hand to explain all! So, what can we do to help our ailing bee population? By far the easiest is to establish a beefriendly population of plants, weaved into our existing displays in the garden and the simplest way of doing this is to plant native species of hedging such as quickthorn, blackthorn, dog roses, and sweet briar –

all being single flowered and pollen-rich. These could be planted from late October and throughout the bare-root season until next March. It’s not just native hedging and flowers, native bulbs should also be considered. Bulb suppliers really have missed a trick here by not actively promoting native species on their packaging. But here are a few you might wish to consider, most take up very little space, yet they really benefit our visiting bees early in the year.
A bulb very much of the moment is the autumn crocus, Colchicum autumnale (above). It’s already in flower in gardens just now when its beautiful pale purplish-pink flowers provide useful late forage for bees. Interestingly, the large blooms suddenly appearing from the bare earth without any leaves provokes their other common name, naked ladies!

The flowers reach 4-6in (10-15cm) when in bloom but its foliage grows to 12in (30cm) in the spring, so be careful not to plant it at the front of the border. If you have a good sized lawn, why not naturalise a few bulbs in this as well? Plant colchicums to around twice the depth of the corm, in moist soils that are well drained. Looking further into late winter, we have the early crocus, namely Crocus tommasinianus to provide an important source of early pollen for bumble and honeybees and their new brood in particular. This crocus has (pictured) pale lilac to purple flowers with a Royal Horticultural Award of Garden Merit (AGM). It is a real star - it blooms from January, and once established, in the border freely self-seeds. Best of all, it will tolerate most situations and soil types, so is a must-have bulb. You can also get named varieties including 'Ruby

Giant': large, violet flowers (see picture), which make a stunning show especially when planted in bold numbers. For best results, this bulb needs full sun and in Buckingham clay, add a little potting compost to the planting hole - mixed with a little sharp sand or grit. The very name, round-headed leeks, Allium sphaerocephalon, doesn’t exactly conjure the best picture of a plant (nor roll off the tongue especially well!), but they are much more attractive than they sound! Their small round umbels of purple flowers make a helpful addition to borders when planted in numbers, and are a useful source of nectar. Being an ornamental onion, it flowers in June and July, and reaches a height of about 2ft (60cm). Like all other alliums, it thrives in full sun and needs well-worked fertile soil to prosper. Plant the bulbs 2-4 inches (5-10cm) deep in groups. Interestingly, round-headed leeks have only been found on one site in the wild in the UK, but once you have this beauty in your garden, I suspect many more alliums are likely to follow! There’s a bit of a debate as to whether the common snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis, RHS AGM) is a native. However they are incredibly well distributed and their early flowering means they are helpful for bumble and honeybees. They do best in a part-shaded location, so under deciduous trees or large shrubs is good. As far as the soil, so long as it doesn’t dry out in the summer and is not too wet in winter, any soil is good. Plant the bulbs as soon as you can from the garden centre as they don’t like to hang around unplanted!

WIN! A Buckingham Garden Centre Gift Voucher worth £25!
TOP TIP: Don’t forget to plant up your baskets and containers with bulbs once the summer displays have finished. You can easily layer them working compost between the bulbs and the layers and placing the bulbs with the largest and latest flowering bulbs at the bottom of the pot, moving to the smallest and earliest in the top layer. So, this is option you could try starting from the bottom... tall growing tulips, large flowered daffodils, dwarf tulips, miniature narcissi, crocus and muscari just below the compost surface. You’ll maximise the effect of your bulbs as well as extending your pots of bulbs for a much longer period as well. Use winter-hardy violas and pansies for the top planting – the bulbs can easily push through in between these to flower.
Here’s a great opportunity to give your garden a well-deserved mini-makeover by winning our easy-to-enter competition. Simply answer the question and TWO lucky readers will have a chance to win a Buckingham Garden Centre Gift Voucher, worth £25 perfect for those bulb purchases!
