SPIRIT OF LEADERSHIP AWARD EDMUND N. ANSIN OWNER & PRESIDENT WSVN CHANNEL 7 - MIAMI, FLORIDA WHDH-TV CHANNEL 7 AND WLVI-TV 56 - BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS Best Buddies International is proud to award Mr. Edmund Ansin with the “Spirit of Leadership” award. This award is Best Buddies’ highest accolade and was presented to distinguished luminaries such as Muhammad Ali, Carlos Slim and Sargent Shriver, who have all shown great leadership, generosity and spirit in supporting the organization’s mission. Over the past decade, Mr. Ansin has supported the Best Buddies mission by contributing close to $2 million in donations, providing more than $2 million in television media, inspiring employees to spend countless hours volunteering and fundraising, and hiring Best Buddies Jobs participant Gabriel Holmes at WSVN Channel 7. Edmund N. Ansin and Anthony K. Shriver at the 2019 Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port Kennedy Compound Luncheon.

Edmund Ansin was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. After relocating to Miami at a young age, he attended Miami Beach Public School through junior high school. He later studied at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and was elected President of his class and a member of the Cum Laude Society. Continuing on to Harvard University, Mr. Ansin attained a Dean’s List scholastic standing. He completed his higher education at the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania in 1957, and graduated with a B. S. in Economics. Mr. Ansin served as Executive Vice President at WSVN from 1962 to 1971. Following his father’s footsteps, the late Sidney D. Ansin, Edmund became President of Sunbeam Television Corporation (Channel 7, Miami) in December 1971. Paving the way for success, Mr. Ansin received the Peabody Award for Channel 7 in 1975, “the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast journalism.” WSVN has received a total of three Peabody Awards and over 250 significant awards of local, state and national recognition. On January 1, 1989, Channel 7 became an independent television station affiliated with the FOX network. Channel 7 is known for its 12 ½ hours of news each weekday. Through Sunbeam’s real estate subsidiaries, namely Sunbeam Properties, Inc. and Sunbeam Development Corporation, Mr. Ansin has developed business parks in South Florida and Indianapolis. Miramar Park of Commerce in Broward County, Florida encompasses over five million square feet and is the largest in the country. The Miramar Park of Commerce has been recognized for numerous industry awards. In 2018, Mr. Ansin was recognized by the City of Miramar for his numerous business contributions and philanthropic work including the building of a sports complex and art gallery. Mr. Ansin, whose station is considered one of the most community-minded in South Florida, has served as Director of the United Way of Dade County, the Red Cross, and the Anti-Defamation League. He holds the unique honor of receiving the prestigious United Way Alexis de Tocqueville Award for philanthropy in Miami, Boston, and Fort Lauderdale where his generous half-million dollar gift allowed United Way of Broward County to completely renovate its building. Mr. Ansin is a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity for both Dade and Broward Counties and has helped build 20 homes, the most recent in the City of Miramar. Another million-dollar gift in 1999 facilitated purchase of a new headquarters by the United Way of Miami-Dade County. Both buildings were dedicated to Ed’s late parents. On July 29, 1993, Sunbeam purchased WHDH-TV, the CBS affiliate in Boston. Since becoming the NBC affiliate in 1995, WHDH-TV became New England’s most-watched television station. A strong local news franchise was established. On December 18, 2006, Mr. Ansin purchased WLVI-TV 56, a CW affiliate, adding a duopoly to the Sunbeam Television roster. In 2017, WHDH became an I ndependent station. Together, Mr. Ansin and his brother Ron Ansin have donated $2.6 million to the Boys & Girls Club of Boston. Their donation has served hundreds of youngsters and at-risk youth through the “YouthConnect” program. The Boys & Girls Club’s renovated building in Charlestown called The Ansin Youth Center, was dedicated in honor of Ed’s late parents. Thanks to yet another generous contribution by Mr. Ansin, students at Emerson College in Boston have a state-of-the-art broadcast studio at the newly named Ansin Building. The Ansin Building serves as a hands-on learning center for college and graduate students interested in careers in broadcasting. In 2011, the Ansin Foundation contributed to the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale with support of a Storm Center, an interactive exhibit focusing on severe weather in South Florida.

Ed Ansin continues to remain involved in the day-to-day decision-making at all three television stations, WSVN in Miami and WHDH and WLVI in Boston. He is very grateful to both the Miami and Boston communities where he has established both his personal and professional life, helping build both communities through his generous contributions come naturally.
