As any cigar smoker knows, the rich tradition of tobacco rolling traces back hundreds of years to Cuba, where the tradition was born. A lot has changed since then, but some manufacturers are still holding true to the time-honored Cuban methods of cigar creation. Illusione The cigars on this page spread are prized not only for their quality but also their rarity. Illusiones are no exception, made in extremely small batches making them almost impossible to find (we know some people). Any stick that doesn’t meet master blender Dion Giolito’s astronomically high standards is cut from the run. It’s obvious from the second you pick it up: this Nicaraguan puro exudes quality. Its glistening reddish-brown wrapper could be a museum exhibit for cigar construction, and the all-Nicaraguan tobacco chosen for each part of this cigar is obviously the best of the batch. Like the name suggests, the taste of this cigar is mysterious. Under blind taste-test conditions, you’d never guess that this cigar is allnatural and the only ingredient is tobacco. The Natural takes the inherent flavors of coffee, cream and chocolate found in trace amounts in normal cigar tobacco and positively makes them sing out loud. As the guy the writes the copy for the catalog, I gotta tell you it’s tough sometimes. I love cigars, but obviously I don’t love every cigar out there. That’s why I look forward to writing about the Revolucion. It’s my favorite of our exclusive brands, hitting smack dab in the middle of the strength meter with medium-bodied decadence. The burn on this baby is so even and true it embarrasses sticks that cost twice as much. I’ve tried all the wrappers and honestly can’t pick a favorite, they all got something going. The Connecticut is the most laid-back with just a hint of faraway spice. The Cameroon has a toothy, complex character with more pronounced spice notes. Finally, the Maduro sweetens up the taste, offering a distinct peppery kick and surprisingly floral undertone. It doesn’t hurt that it’s made by Perdomo, coming from a long line of top-rated smokes. This Revolucion won’t change the world, but it might spark a movement in your humidor. It did for me.

We have been in touch with the fine folks at the “Reel” Cigar Shop in Deerfield Beach, FL, and we came away with a haul of one of their house brand cigars, the Reel Grande. These cigars are made in Honduras using a rich blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos to achieve a complex medium-full bodied flavor. However, as the folks at the Reel Cigar Shop say, “size really does matter”, and with these babies it’s all about the girth. Offered in 3 different vitolas, each one boasting a full 60-ring, these are big smokes that are sure to satisfy. The increased size allows for the manufacturer to incorporate a greater quantity and variety of tobacco to gain a more complex blend.
