Iconic Rebuilding Graduation Project Critical Thinking Discipline

4th Year

Supervisor: Michael E. Young , Gaye BezircioÄ&#x;lu, Nazli KĂśk

Iconic Rebuilding Project shows us an already collective and dynamic island by adding a new green heart into there. The main aim of this Project is to continue the idea which is philosophy of collectivity. There are different amount of houses owned by different families on adjacent , their social and individual areas are provided by steel frames. The main goal is decreasing the density of housing footprint and replacing it with the public necessities such as clinic, library and green areas, also providing quality housing. These public spaces provide activities for all ages, as well as link to different character of the island.

Port

provides people to fishing, sailing and selling their products cooperatively..

Landing Stage

the coastline, where the local people spend most of their time, designed according to their necessities.

Clinic & Library

In order to eliminate the lack of social spaces, the library and the clinic were designed.

For this project architectural design experience completely different, they all at various scale. Drew details for the structure that was suggested and also for the houses, library and clinic designed as a reference for islanders to show how they could build their necessities with free structures. Designed plans could extend according request with free steel structures.

Sociological dimension of architecture is very crucial. Spaces are anomalously build up in Santa Cruz and they are starting to become different because of the intertwining of the spaces, started to approach the design with ideas of Constant’s New Babylon Utopia. west elevation

Time Regulation Institute Critical Thinking Discipline

4th Year

Supervisor: Michael E. Young , Gaye Bezircioğlu, Nazli Kök

“Time Regulation Institute“ selected as a representative of group for Salt Galata Event.

Critical Practices: Angelus Novus Time Regulation Institute located in Damlacık Mahallesi, Konak where is very close to important historical places and The Clock Tower. That year, critical thinking group coordinator has given Time Regulation Institute book by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. We started our semester Project with reading this book and design this institute in Izmir. Percieving that writer’s describe of spaces in human scale, space relations according to our criticism. The phrase I have gained from this novel, in which the author refers to architecture, is “the clock itself is space, its walk is time, its setting is human”.

From my point of view, bureacracy is created by integration of public and government. It is a social necessity that provide the people to live in a harmony. This integration is reflected by vertical element which is called “Watch Setting Station”. As Tanpınar said that it shoulde be face of institute..Structure of this element created by 6 o’clock pavillion, offices and working places.Watch Setting Station circulated vertivally and it connect bureacrats and public.Conceptual idea comes from conflict between east&west and old&new.East is forward about the time with sun direction, we follow sun east to west but there is specific term about “westernization”.This sun direction commemorate with “Oculus”.

The fabrics of the structure represents daytime and night. Daytime and night create a day together like our fabrics create space. The equinox when day and night are equal length and after than the spring equinox, day will last longer than night. The form also welcomes the sun and remembers the sunset.

Another point of equinox is sun’s direction. Sun only rise and down directly east and west direction only two equinox day. So the structure emphasise those two points and located through the direction.

The form of the structure based on light and it’s direction. While sunrise, the structure welcomes it’s light. When sunset, we commemorate the sun by the replaced light of an artificial one.

site + light workshop

The site involves agriculture and art areas. The functional part of the structure is to feel and see the knowladges about the sun at the moment. People who works in agriculture can take benefit from that. By the form it directs people from agriculture to art areas. Another inspiration comes from trees by their function of creating shadow.

architecture. His ethical values and responsibilities shaped according to his life. Kéré describe himself as lucky because he was the first person who went to school in his village. That’s why Kéré worked in order to share the luck he had, with other people. After his architecture education, he went back to his hometown and worked to increase the possibilities for other people. Meanwhile, he established Kéré Foundation and Kéré Architecture. Ethical Values How architecture can help us to change the world and touch the people’s lives? Architecture can improve people’s lives but why should it serve so many few while there are millions of people in need. Diebedo Francis Kéré’s approach to architecture is raised through his homeland, where the access to basic living initials was difficult. An architectural touch can change communities social interactions, generate and improve economies and help to raise the environmental conscious. The touch of Francis Kéré affected his village in different perspectives. The social interaction of community generated by training people, because his purpose is, one day when he dies, at least one person from Gando keeps doing this work. People in Gando can use their skills to earn money themselves however Burkina Faso has difficult economic conditions in Gando community and made them leave the village. Now, community members on site are trained as construction workers and can use those skills to find work in the region, and earn a living.Francis Kéré’s projects established micro economy. Furthermore, economy affects society. This economical weakness, reduces the unity of society and causes the cultural assimilation. For instance, young generation leave the country and never come back. However, now they can stay in the country and work on different job opportunities and earn money to feed their family. These projects has opened up opportunities to develop Gando more. Participation creates a sense of identification and motivation. “My work is first and foremost a social instrument. Its cultural, economic and environmental building solutions are always underpinned by a social process.” says Francis Kere. The village being valued, preserved and further developed by Francis Kere and his successful projects in Gando and those became a symbol of inspiration, As the collective knowledge of construction began to spread, its neighbor villages also built their own educational facilities. To put it in a few words, Kere’s architectural approach on using local materials, designing sustainable buildings, generating a public sense and collectivity, and educating the community changed a lot on people’s lives and affected the worlds awareness.
