When I ask others about their leadership philosophy, I often get blank looks of confusion in return. It seems we strive to do a lot of learning about leadership, without giving much thought to who we are as leaders - or what we hope to achieve as we mentor or lead others. A leadership philosophy is a set of principles that guides a leader's actions. Leadership philosophies help leaders stay focused on what is important to them as they make decisions and model and plan for productivity throughout their organization. Leadership philosophies require a leader to understand their values, priorities, and their expectations deeply and clearly. Because of the frequency in which this will be used, it should be developed thoroughly and evaluated regularly to

by Sheila Farr. SHRM-SCP Business Strategist ensure the leader continues to: 1) operate within the context of his/her core values, and 2) to ensure continued growth. Leadership philosophies should be personal. Your leadership philosophy should explain what sort of leader you aspire to be. Your personal leadership philosophy will differ from others because it should position your beliefs and expectations with your business goals. This means that you'll need to spend a little time in self-reflection to first understand who you are as a leader. So, our first assignment in developing our philosophy is this: tell us who you are as a leader! Watch for our answers in next month's column.

She Shells, LLC’s, art pieces begin when the team starts their travels to beach comb for shells throughout the world. After cleaning and sorting, they head back to the studio! Their shell-adorned crosses from their signature collection take a month to craft and process for sale. Each piece is unique and crafted to last for generations! However, there is much more to this unique Coastal business.

MEET BECKY FARRELL Artisan Becky Farrell is the CEO and artistic designer behind all of the fabulous creations at She Shells, LLC, and she's also the founding attorney at the Law Office of Becky Farrell, PLLC. Becky has practiced law on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for 20 years, and her roots here on the Coast run deep. She was born and raised in New Orleans, but like many others, she spent her weekends, summers, and holidays at her family's vacation home on the Coast.


She moved to the Coast permanently in 1995 with her children and today she practices general law, with a focus on accident and injury cases, in the quaint city of Bay St. Louis. This award-winning attorney is very active in the legal community, including her participation in the MS Bar Association, the Hancock County Bar Association, and regular participation in a local Lawyers and Judges support group and the National Trial Lawyers Association. She is a fierce advocate for those in the profession who struggle with depression and substance abuse issues, and sits on several Boards and organizations along the Gulf Coast. In 2022, She Shells, LLC, was born after Becky was placed on bed-rest for an extended period of time following an illness. Always having a love for crafts and design, she decided to create works of art from the sea shells she and her children had collected through the years. It was so fun and therapeutic for her that she decided to turn her hobby into a business.

WHO IS CARLIN DUNCAN? Carlin Duncan has been cooking since she was in diapers. She learned at an early age just how important food was to people. Gathered around a kitchen table is where her family laughed, cried, fought, made-up, found out shocking news, gave advice - etc., etc., - all while eating. Carlin says, "It's funny how a simple taste of food can cause the tears to dry up and a smile to appear." After realizing food had so much power to change a mood, she knew she wanted to be a part of that world. To hear people enjoying something she created and to see the smiles on their faces is worth the hours in the kitchen to her. Today, Carlin is a food blogger and owner of Girl Meets Kitchen, a boutique catering service along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

HER PHILOSOPHY ON CUSTOMER SERVICE When asked about her philoscopy on customer service, Carlin said, "I support my customers by always being available to them. My customers need to know that they are not just a number or money to me. They are humans and they deserve respect no matter what. They need to know that I am here for any question or shoulder they need. Any one I have ever worked with/for knows to this day, that they can still reach out to me even if its not food related. Its important to me that I learn each person. That they feel comfortable enough to let their true self show. It's also important that people realize I have “old school values” - which means people, as well as the little things, matter most to me. I'm not some huge business or corporation where people are easily replaced. Each person, whether a client or a person walking by, deserves my time if they want it. And whether we talk food or you need to vent, I am here. I'm a girl in the South, I still say yes ma'am and no sir when speaking. I was raised that way and I will run my business the same as the morals and values I was taught."

WHAT INSPIRES CARLIN? "To be honest, everyone who is living their truth and doing what they love! I mean how cool is that, that in today's craziness, there are people who are living out loud! Like OMG, I respect those types of people so much. They are so bold to say, “I dont care what people say or think, I'm going to do me regardless." It takes so much strength to be honest with yourself and just be you. Those types of people need to be cherished and loved on even more. Their life is free from all the chaotic mess of the world," she says. Carlin believes that you are the only one who can change your surroundings. "Life is short; start doing what you were called to do! If you don't like your job, find one you love. Don't like your circle of friends? Find some who will treat you the way friends should."

HER GREATEST SUCCESS AT WORK...THUS FAR! When asked about her greatest professional success thus far, she remarked, "That's an interesting question, but some would say that when I was contacted by a major cooking show that I had 'made it.' To think that a prime time show wanted me to audition was HUGE!! And yes that was an amazing opportunity. I did the audition and went through months of jumping through hoops. I even made it to the final stage of auditioning...but then was cut. And that's OK. That was an amazing time of my life and the people were super nice. But I think my greatest success is knowing that I'm doing this my way and not conforming and changing who I am."

"I'm not saying the show wanted me to change, I am saying alot of people do not stay true sometimes and I don't want that to be me. When I “make it,” I want it to be because I am Carlin. The same Carlin I was from a child to now. The same Carlin who is goofy, shy , silly, watching SVU and Chicago PD on repeat. The same person who will literary give you my last $20 knowing my light bill is due by 5 p.m. That is how I was raised, and that is how I want to stay. No matter how many clients I have, or where this journey takes me. I want to be true to my family’s name and be someone that when my mother and grandmother look down on me they are pleased with what they left behind." she said.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT When asked about advice she would give to anyone entering her profession, she told us, "My advice to anyone entering into this industry… cut yourself some slack. This industry is not for the weak. You are going to get frustrated, angry, you are going to go crazy and cry at times. There will be times where you will doubt yourself, mess up, and straight out fail. But you must get back up!! Never accept defeat. Tune out everyone else and listen to you heart and gut. It's easier said than done but trust me, it's so rewarding. Love yourself enough to wipe your tears and speak positive to your inner child. Love yourself enough to not give up on yourself. The world is full of people who don't care about you, so you owe it to yourself to be the one who cares. And if you can't give yourself that, then contact me and let's fight your self-doubt together!'

FEBRUARY'S RECIPE

CARLIN'S GREEN BEANS AND POTATOES 2 lbs potatoes ( your choice . Pictured are the red & yellow potatoes from DJ ) 1 pack of bacon Step 1 - Cut your bacon into small pieces and cook until crispy. Remove bacon from pan but leave the grease. Step 2 - Remove about half of the grease from the pack of bacon from the pan. Add 2 tbsp of butter to grease. Quarter your potatoes and put in the pan on med/low heat. Let potatoes form a crust before touching them. Don't touch them too much or they will become mushy. Step 3 - Let potatoes cook on med/high for about 30 mins (or under half done), stirring occasionally. Once your potatoes have reached a half done point , throw in your green beans. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, Tony's or Slap Your Momma seasonings . Cook for additional 25 mins until done ( this part varies due to some people like a little crunch still in their beans) pic below was cooked for 25-30 mins slowly when beans were added. Step 4 remove from heat and toss in bacon pieces. Toss slightly and serve. Enjoy! Page 12

2023 TRENDS In the post-COVID world, there is a whole new set of workplace safety concerns surfacing. Let's look at the top three trends for 2023. 1. Irregular or extended working hours. 2. Mental health disorders in the workplace. 3. Home ergonomics for remote workers.

As we know, the human body can only withstand a certain amount of stress before it begins to break down. Conditions such as tendinitis, neuropathy, and other muscle-related issues exacerbated by inflammation are extremely common when someone begins to work beyond their normal level of conditioning for an extended period of time. In addition to slow-developing chronic issues, being fatigued while on the job can prove to be extremely dangerous. Fatigue often results in the impaired ability to think clearly, restlessness, anxiety, and other symptoms that don’t mesh well with jobs that require focus or precision, heavy machinery, hazardous working conditions, or other common safety risks.


Mental health disorders in the workplace According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults aged 18 or older (44.7 million people) have reported a mental illness. In addition, 71% of adults reported at least one symptom of stress, such as a headache or feeling overwhelmed or anxious. With these statistics, it is important that mental health awareness be an integral part of any workplace-injury prevention and safety program.

According to a survey conducted by Owl Labs, during the COVID-19 pandemic, close to 70% of full-time workers began working from home. After the pandemic, 92% of people surveyed expected to work from home at least 1 day per week, and 80% expected to work at least 3 days from home per week. While research suggests this is a positive thing in the minds of most employees and employers alike, it presents some issues in the short and long term as employees are ditching their ergonomically friendly chairs and office setups for their couches and kitchen tables.

When it comes to workplace safety, we all must be vigilant. Ensuring that you (and your employees) are adequately educated and trained to respond to hazards and emergencies can help save both dollars and lives; especially when seconds count. With the shift in today's workforce, there is a change on the horizon for workplace safety and what it means to our workforce. Let's take a look at five steps employers can take to make certain they are providing the safest workplaces possible.

1. Have emergency protocols in place

Develop a written safety plan that clearly outlines a procedure for handling and reporting injuries and emergencies, including phone numbers for first responders. Make sure every employee has read the plan as part of their training, and review it with them as part of your monthly, quarterly, and annual training refreshers. Also, make sure to post the plan in an accessible spot, so it’s easy to reference.

2. Perform Regular Safety Checks and Self-audits

Having a written safety plan that clearly outlines policies and procedure is imperative, but also important is performing regular safety checks and self audits. Safety checks may be done by employers and employees. If businesses get into the practice of making safety first from the top down, organizations can begin to develop their employees with a 'safety first' mentality. Ensuring monthly checks are done can help keep equipment in good repair and can encourage everyone - both employers and employees alike - to

keep their eyes open for potential hazards. Self-audits are an effective way of monitoring your policies and work to ensure you're meeting goals, objectives, and standards. By conducting self-examination activities on an regular basis, you can identify any weaknesses or potential problems and make any necessary adjustments to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines. When it comes to auditing, it’s critical to have independence and objectivity to demonstrate a “culture of compliance."


3. Provide Personal Protective Equipment

What your employees need as personal protective equipment (PPE) depends on your industry. For example, antibacterial garments keep people safe with food processing, masks with double-ply panels are used by healthcare workers, and industrial workwear is fire retardant and sturdy. An industry association can often provide guidance for your particular workplace. 4. Ergonomics, Ergonomics, Ergonomics

People who perform office work also need to think about workplace safety. They might be less likely to be injured from a one-time accident, but they are at risk for back and neck pain, carpal tunnel, headaches, and vision issues. It’s important that employees are educated about proper posture when sitting at a desk. Computers and office devices should be adjusted to the correct height and distance so that your employees are working safely. Industrial workers must also be concerned with ergonomics at work, so be certain that you are properly evaluation all job descriptions to ensure you're following OSHA guidelines for ergonomics in all areas. 5. Properly Train All Employees

All employees should be trained to safely execute the duties listed in their job description, including proper lifting techniques and how to handle any hazardous materials that are present in the workplace. Each new employee should be properly trained before beginning work, and it’s important to provide refresher training at least annually. By becoming familiar with these workplace safety tips, and others that are specific to your industry or environment, you can enjoy increased employee retention, higher productivity, and reduced workers’ compensation costs. Mental Muscle By Juanita Terry-Wentz

You ever pass by a martial arts school in the summer when their front doors are wide open, and class is in full session? Have ever wondered what goes on inside? Do you ever hear the yells and screams coming from inside the building? Or the rhythmic sound that echoes from inside those walls? What curiosities are inside? Now you know from TV, movies, or magazines, that martial arts are physically strenuous, but there is another benefit to martial arts that I did not know existed: the training and/or retraining of your thought process. Yes, your brain! What you think and what you believe, have the opportunity to be challenged!

With the newfound strength in the knowledge of your mental and physical capabilities and disabilities, the inner strength of knowing you can defend yourself without a weapon. A personal growth of spirit, mind and body fosters slowly. So slowly that you may not recognize it for some time, or until someone points it out to you. Repetition of movements gives the mind the opportunity to wander off. Those thoughts can be spiritual or not, whichever you prefer. I aim for a spiritual connection. I have a mixture of music playing in the background. Time flies by with every movement. Each movement is followed by another and another. Each movement begins and ends with a deep breath, then slowly exhaling. My purpose is to correct the errors and hold a proper position, with slow methodical movements. I adjust for my body type, then repeat. All the while I am building muscle memory, without a thought about what the training has done to my brain.

For me, Martial Arts helped me realize that I had become a mentally stronger person, Where there was once fear, doubt and confusion, now has been challenged to change with the newfound knowledge of Martial Arts. The mind has grown in spirit, as the body grows accustomed to the never-ending challenges of a Martial Arts lifestyle. My journey for peace of mind may be different from yours. We may get to that peace of mind at different times in our journey. It’s what I strive for during my private classes. There’s a calming peace from within me. A mental clarity, and sometimes even spiritually uplifting. There are so many different avenues to try out and see what’s a good fit for you. Work your mental muscle!

IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH, WE SPOTLIGHT MAYA ANGELOU'S TOP 10 LEADERSHIP QUALITIES As a young woman, I was deeply inspired by Maya Angelou. Maya was a poet, dancer, singer, activist, and world-famous author. But to me, Maya felt like “home.” Growing up I had a loveaffair with books. My Mother passed this passion down to me as she read to me most nights of my early childhood. My security blanket was a book, any book. I connected with Maya Angelou through her books and through her poetry. In the late 70’s, the poem, “Still I Rise,” was published by Maya Angelou. Her words deeply touched me as she wrote about the unshakeable spirit of black people. This unshakeable spirit inspired them to rise above racism and adversity. I sat in awe as Maya’s powerful words of “survival” and “hope” seared into my heart. I was a poor white child who lived on the other side of the tracks with African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and American Indians. In my mind, I identified with those words. Maya’s message of liberation and survival took root in my soul. As I became a young career woman in the military healthcare field I carried her message with me with a passion and a fervor. I tried to be a person of character and if witnessing a wrong I would speak up and advocate for justice. I could not tolerate a “bully-mentality” by anyone. You see, Maya Angelou taught me the importance of loving myself fully and loving others even in the face of hardship. Maya Angelou is well known for her seven autobiographies, focusing on her childhood and young adult experiences. She is also well known for her poetry and as a powerful spokeswoman. I would like to recap a speech that Maya delivered to one of the many university graduations. It is called her Top 10 Rules for Success. Just Do Right. “Right may not be expedient and it may not be profitable, but it will satisfy your soul.” I remember Sunday School lessons in the 1970’s where my teacher would share that God was always watching us. She would say that even when no one else was around, He knew what was in our hearts and mind. Doing the right thing is what is expected of a good citizen. “Try to live your life in a way so that you will not regret years of inertia and timidity.” “Pick up the battle and make it a better world, just where you are.”

Be Courageous. “Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can’t be consistently kind, or fair, or humane, or generous, not without courage.” Love. “Have enough courage to trust love one more time and always one more time.” “I believe self-love is very important. If you read my work, you know I’m always talking about loving one’s self. I never trust anybody if he or she doesn’t love herself or himself.” Laugh. “If you don’t laugh, you will die. You really must laugh. The sense of humor is a selfdefense, and against the cruelties of life one must laugh.” “Just as hope rings through laughter it can also shine through tears.” Be a Blessing to Somebody. “I have had a lot of clouds, but I have had so many rainbows in those clouds.” In her speeches, Maya often talks about carrying the love and blessings of all her friends and family with her every time she goes onto a stage to speak. She carries them inside her heart. Having the images of all those who have ever loved her provides her with the encouragement she needs to connect with her audience. “The thing to do it seems is to prepare yourself as a blessing so you can be the rainbow in somebody else’s cloud.” Turn Struggles into Triumphs. Maya often spoke of the worse trauma of her life occurring at the age of seven and a half years old. The trauma was so severe that she didn’t speak for five years. Maya turned into herself during that time and began to read every book in the black school library and in the white school library. She memorized the whole plays of Shakespeare and everything of Edger Allen Poe. She had access to all the great poets and philosophers, and she memorized them all. When she decided to speak, she had a lot to say and many ways in which to say her words. Maya credits that “out of the evil she was saved through her muteness.” She was able to draw from human thought, disappointments, and triumphs. When Maya began speaking at the age of 12 ½ years old she had a lot to say. You are Talented. “I believe that every person is born with talent.” “If you are stupid, you will ill-use your talents. If you are wise, you will use your talents for the furtherance of your mind.” Learn to say No. “There’s a place in you that you must keep pristine and clean. So that nobody has the right to curse you or treat you badly. Say no, when it’s no, because that place must remain clean and untouched.” Saying no, gives you an implicit power and protects your energy


Always do Your Best. Maya said, “I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one. I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Keep Rising. “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, you may tread me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I’ll rise.” “Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise. Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear, I rise. Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave me, I rise.” Maya Angelou’s poem, “Still I Rise,” boldly spoke about the grace, dignity, and resilience of black people. She often spoke encouraging all marginalized people to keep rising despite oppression. “Maya Angelou published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.” (Stanley, 1992). Maya Angelou was heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960’s. She served as the Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1959. The sixth installment of her autobiographical series, A Song Flung up to Heaven (2002), provides a personal account of Maya’s role as an influential leader of the Civil Rights Movement between 1965 and 1968. Veteransville: Helping Others Connect & Grow by Sheila Farr

From the moment you lay eyes on the patriotic-colored tiedyed logo, you know there's something special about this organization. Veteransville is a new nonprofit established to provide charitable and educational services to Veterans and their families. Founded by retired U.S. Army logistics specialist Brandi Miles, Veteransville has already started making an a major impact serving homeless Veterans along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. "We aren't just limited to helping the homeless population, but here along the Coast, so many of our brothers and sisters need help. We're working to

make sure we don't just get stuck in a cycle of outreach, but instead, we'd like to focus on helping with reintegration into our community," says Miles. In addition to homeless outreach and reintegration, Veteransville will offer assistance to female Veterans undergoing trauma recovery by offering quarterly retreats that focus on providing mental health counseling, on-going lifecoaching, and education in the areas of health and wellness. "It's so important to help others understand that many of our veterans are still in recovery. So many of our female veterans need

help in releasing the control and experiences that had in the military, so they can transition to civilian lives and still be productive. We're working to make sure that happens for as many Veterans as we can," said the Executive Director of the organization. Plans are in the works for a fundraising golf tournament on May 27th and a festival called "VetsFest" this November. "We just want to show the world what our Veterans are capable of doing. We're out here changing the world and making sure we help our veterans make healthy connections with each other and with our community,"


remarked Coach Brandi Miles. Veteransville is excited to begin partnering with other nonprofits and businesses along the Coast in order to bring their services to a wider range of Veterans. VETERANS' CORNER: HOW TO MAKE YOUR WORKPLACE VETERAN FRIENDLY By Sheila Farr

As a Veteran who is also concerned with integrating prior service members into civilian workforces, I wanted to share a few tips designed to help employers understand the benefits to hiring Veterans and military service members (including National Guard and Reserve) and the practices that could be implemented to attract and retain Veteran employees.

Organizations wishing to attract and retain Veteran employees can benefit from the Veteran-friendly practices derived from this study and additional resources.

There are many good reasons why companies would want to hire Veterans:

Some Veteran-friendly practices to consider:

•They bring with them the skills to do the job in a timely and efficient manner •They have both the hard and soft skills coveted by employers, such as leadership, management, teamwork, accountability, and responsibility •There are tax incentives associated with hiring Veterans, such as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 The Department of Veterans Affairs conducted the Veterans in the Workplace study to gain insight into improving Veteran retention in the workplace, and this is what they learned.

An organization does not have to implement all these practices but can choose the practices that are the best fit for the company.

•Have a strong Veteran recruitment and hiring program •Have supportive policies and practices in place for members of the National Guard and Reserve •Support affinity groups for Veterans and military service members •Provide orientation training to new Veteran employees on the organization’s culture, services, and the like Develop and support a Veteran mentoring program

One thing is for certain: if employers are willing to give our Veterans a chance, there are many, many options available to them. Veterans are great leaders - they're conditioned to lead - so once employers begin to understand this, I think we will begin to see a great deal of change in the attitudes about hiring Veterans. It's really a good idea all the way around!

•Give preference to Veteran-owned businesses when seeking product or service vendor support Support a military-focused philanthropic effort

Recruitment and hiring practices to consider: •Have dedicated military recruiters •Advertise job openings on military job boards and social media sites •Attend military job fairs, both traditional and virtual •Have a dedicated military section on the organization’s website •Encourage Veteran employees to refer fellow Veterans for job openings •Develop a PR campaign to market your organization as military-friendly

Dear Watley: Thank you for your question about client attraction, marketing, communications and growth. Much of what you ask about, many businesses experience, including my own during the first 25 years. Business growth is a continual cycle of creating trust, and managing your client projects with a high quality of service and communications. When one of these is missing, then business growth may slow down or become non-existent. Your two questions are similar, so I will answer them together. Hopefully my response will give you a perspective into what you may do for the future growth of your company.

1. What might I be doing wrong? What can I do now to move forward in 2023 to gain the confidence of my former clients so they will consider me for their long-term projects? A business plan or business model is needed for your company to determine what its SWOT is (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats). Use your updated business model or business plan on a regular (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, all of these) basis to monitor and manage your business growth - both financially and customer perspective. Know what is in your bank account on a daily basis. As the CEO, it is your responsibility to know what your company is doing. It doesn’t matter if it is home-based or part-time basis. Know what it is doing for you. Then you will begin to see what areas you may need to work on to serve your clients. A business model or business plan is your guide to growth, positive or negative. One of the best resources to gain information is www.score.gov. There are chapters in the San Diego area that offers free mentorship and counseling for entrepreneurs at all levels of business development. It is time for you to stop and get your plan into writing and use it as your roadmap. Otherwise, it is like going to the middle of a Y-bridge and not caring which direction you turn – left or right. Smile. Breathe. Laugh. Repeat. It will take some authentic talk with yourself in identifying who you are, who your company is, and what your vision and mission for your company. 2. Communication with your clients is important. Yes, we are in a social media age, but that does not mean that a hand-written thank you note, birthday card, anniversary card, or just a ‘hello’ note isn’t important for you to send to them. It makes the difference when they get snail mail from a business colleague that isn’t an advertisement or selling them. Design a small note card with your logo on it or create an image that inspires happiness. These do count. 3. You are a salesperson, like it or not. Every CEO sells. Every person who works in your company is an internal customer and an external salesperson. Pay attention to the words you use in communicating with a client, or what you/how you write in your proposals, emails, or any form of written communication. Your confidence exudes when you change your mindset that you are a salesperson and you represent your company at all times, no matter where you are. Customers are all around you, even when you are in the grocery store or at a sporting event, concert, or walking. Ask your former/current clients for referrals.

4. Marketing and Public Relations are excellent vehicles to promote your business and its accomplishments with local, regional and national media. Volunteer with community events that your clients also volunteer and support. Use your expertise to develop a short talk or presentation. Share your wisdom with others. Toastmasters International has chapters in the San Diego area, and is a great place to gain experience in public speaking.
