SET YOUR COURSE FOR SUCESS?

A leadership philosophy is essentially a belief system that guides your decisionmaking It consists of your core principles, perspectives, and values

When you define what they are, and use them to shape a leadership philosophy statement, your behaviors and decisions will remain consistent.

Our formula for beginning to developing your personal leadership philosophy is simple It can help you gain a greater sense of self-awareness so you have a clearer idea of who you are as a leader and the areas in which you need to grow. It can be developed just by considering these questions:

1. What is your definition of leadership?

2 What are your personal core values?

3 What do you feel are your best leadership qualities?

4 What are some areas in which you feel you need to grow or develop as a leader?

5. What would you like your "leadership legacy" to be?

These are some really great questions to get you started on your way to developing your own philosophy of leadership Looking at these questionsand taking time to really consider the answers - can help deepen your understanding of yourself, your behaviors, and your actions as a leader.

Join us next month for more about ways to develop your leadership philosophy

Soulful Self Care: A Journey of Healing Through Journaling

Brandy M Morgan is an author with a heart for helping others Her first solo project, Soulful Self Care, is making a big splash along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and beyond after its release this summer More than just another selfhelp journal, Brandy's work is filled with prompts to help you soul search, information that will enrich your life, helpful hints that allow you to really connect with yourself and grow

We sat down with this agent of change recently, and talked about her book, her work as a life coach and advocacy coach, and we learned about the things that motivate her, inspire here, and keep

her moving forward

We learned that she values family, tradition, and helping others truly understand their heritage and healing

For more information about her work or to reach out to Brandy, she invites you to connect with her at her website:

www themorganlegacygroup com

The following is our interview with this most impassioned advocate:

AUGUST 2023
Page 9

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?

I truly enjoy being a part of something that is greater than myself that brings about positive lasting change within my clients and my community

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR BOOK?

With all the many trials and tribulations that I have faced over the past six years, I somewhere in the midst of it all lost myself I didn't feel like I knew who I was anymore, and I was falling into a battle with depression, and severe anxiety I needed to stop focusing on my outer world and instead focus on doing the inner work to heal my past traumas

Through my journey of healing, I used several tools to help me establish a healthy, mindful, and easy-to-follow self-care routine that encompassed multiple healing modalities. Then I added a cultural spin to it and started to notice how quickly my healing process began to move forward.

It wasn't until I lost my father in April 2022 that I started to get messages from my ancestors to share my knowledge and help others find strength through their healing journeys, so in October 2022, I took the leap and decided to officially write my guided self-care journal titled; Soulful Self-Care: A Journey of Healing Through Journaling Every single tool that I share in my journal are tools that I personally used throughout my own healing process, and still use to this day! These practices helped me through some of the most difficult times in my life, and they helped me establish a mindset of positivity, growth, and inner peace

If my journal helps even one person establish a healthy inner relationship with themselves then it makes all my work that much more special.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PROFESSION?

I want to be the support for others that I didn't have (and needed) when I was experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, and many other personal issues Helping people grow into their purpose and take actionable steps toward their dream life is my form of success I am working to build a legacy that my children can be proud of A legacy that will last long after I have left this life and joined my ancestors in the next

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST UNEXPECTED BLESSING OR PART OF THE WORK YOU DO?

The most unexpected blessing that I have received throughout my journey is the acceptance of so many wonderful women business owners throughout the Mississippi Gulf Coast When I left California, I left all of my networking connections, friends, and family These were all associations that took years for me to establish while working in my local community Being accepted in my new community in such a short time has shown me the true meaning of Southern Hospitality, and I am honored to be accepted as a professional businesswoman of color on the Gulf Coast.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My biggest motivation is my children

They are my "why" in this world of uncertainty As a young single mother, it was a struggle to raise them on my own, but their love pushed me to work harder and smarter toward achieving my goals

I want to be someone that they look up to, are proud of, and someone they can learn from. I wasn't able to provide them the life that I thought they deserved as little ones, so now I work even harder to ensure that I am able to support their goals & dreams as they start to grow into adulthood.

Page 10

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN THE WORK YOU DO?

My biggest challenge has been my fear of vulnerability It takes a lot of guts to share your personal life story with others for the fear of judgement always seems to creep its way into our minds So, stepping out of my comfort zone and sharing my challenges publicly has been the biggest hurdle that I've had to cross, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and there are people out in the world struggling with the same issues as I did, and by sharing my story I am giving them space to share theirs as well.

SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT HOW YOU MANAGE OR WORK TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES.

Every day as an entrepreneur is its own challenge, and some are easier to manage than others The goal for me is not to get too consumed by the potentially negative situations and focus on the preventative measures that I can take whenever possible. Every challenge presents an opportunity for growth. So, learning how to give myself grace during operational challenges has been the most difficult obstacle to overcome. For the most part, I always keep a notebook by my side so that I can create a Ta-Da list, write down inspirations as they come, and take notes whenever needed. Physically writing down information and repeating it to myself helps me retain important information, as well as track my daily progress with ease It's a bit old-fashioned but it helps!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS AT WORK?

My greatest success at work has been ME I am finally at a point in my professional life where I recognize my value and what I bring to the table I no longer feel comfortable shying away in the background I have accepted my inner greatness, and am no longer afraid to let my light shine By doing so, I create a safe space for my clients to do the same It took a lot for me to get to where I am today Six years ago, I was homeless with my son, and now I am a homeowner and entrepreneur And, to me, that's what success looks like

HOW DO YOU SUPPORT YOUR CUSTOMERS OR CLIENTS? WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Building a trusting relationship with my clients is my number one concern I want them to feel seen, heard, and appreciated throughout the entire coaching and/or consulting process Each session is tailored to their specific goals and needs First, we start off with confidence-building exercises because success starts from maintaining a healthy mindset Then we start focusing on creating actionable steps toward their personal & career goals.

WHO (OR WHAT) INSPIRES YOU?

Honoring my ancestors and paying homage to those who came before me is a big part of my inspiration It reminds me of how hard they fought for my rights as a woman and as a woman of color. Most of my ancestors didn't have rights and were seen as property instead of as people with lives of value & purpose. To be the one to break generational curses and step into my personal power is the grandest inspiration of all. It is an honor to represent my ancestors through my actions.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH ANYONE WHO IS CONSIDERING ENTERING YOUR CAREER FIELD?

Life coaching was never really a career that I thought about going into, at first Instead, I was called to it by the universal energies that be My life experiences (though daunting) have allowed me to gain a variety of tips & tools that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.

My advice is this, if you have experienced pain, and have used that pain to fuel your passion then Life Coaching is the path for you! It is one of the most rewarding roles I have ever worked in, and I get to help people take actionable steps toward the life of their dreams. It doesn't get any better than that.

Feng Shui is a mixture of Chinese philosophy, Buddhism, and Taoism. It has been around for thousands of years. It means Wind and Water it is an art and science of placement. It’s all about keeping positive energy flowing for harmony and balance to support your lifestyle. It can be applied to your house, individual rooms, desktops, and landscaping.

MEETDEBBIBOSTDORF

Debbi Bostdorf is a U.S. Veteran who has found a new career after her military service with Feng Shui.

"Feng Shui has always fascinated me," she says, "It is a feeling - a vibe and energy you get from a room or area you are in. I’m sure you have experienced it as well. For example, if you walk in a dark, cluttered room you’ll feel weighted down, whereas if you walked in a bright room with open space, you feel energized."

Page 15

WHATIS FENGSHUIANDHOW DOES ITWORKFORYOU?

There are various types of Feng Shui : BTS, White Pillar, 8 mansion, and Flying star. I am certified in Black Sect Feng Shui (BTS) which is the 5 elements and uses the Baqua map. By using the map with 9 sections we call qua’s we learn to enhance that section of your house; for example - if it’s the wood section, we would not want to load it with fire that would burn the energy. The goal is to keep positive energy flowing.

Everyone most likely is already using some elements of Feng Shui and you may not even realize it. It’s as simple as keeping areas uncluttered, throwing away dead flowers, and making sure the mirrors are clean. However, it’s how we enhance the areas in ways that prevent us from getting the feeling of being stuck. Feng Shui can also be used when we want to advance in our careers, find a partner, or even travel more. In those instances, we would learn how to enhance those qua’s to support our goals.

It’s all about the flow of energy and I would like to help you better understand yours and assist you in reaching your goals.

Fun with Feng Shui

Feng Shui is about the flow of positive energy thru your home, the main entry area is the front door which we call the mouth of Chi It’s letting in the energy to flow/nourish your home.

That’s why when you enter the home it should be open, inviting and attractive You will notice more energy flowing into your life. Where as a dark, gloomy, and difficult to approach entry can cause negative energies and missed opportunities.

There should be no cluttering at the front door or where you enter your home. If there is no closet for shoes or coats you can add a basket or racks for shoes and a coat stand for hats and coats You can also hang small symbols of welcome or inspiration in this area.

Let’s not forget the outside of the main entry door this too should be free of clutter and a clear pathway into the home. You can brighten and make it attractive Also be sure your door is clean from bugs and dirt

I know some situations are not always ideal, but remember there are always cures with Feng Shui to improve the positive flow

Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions I can always address it in next month’s column.

Keep your flow on.

THEESSENCEOF EXCELLENCE

Through interviews with successful entrepreneurs each month, we reveal different perspectives.

FEATURED COLUMNIST

In an interview with Dr Shirley Luu of Shirley Luu and Associates, she shared insights into her triumphant journey to entrepreneurship Dr Henry-Fields's questions will be written in italic fonts and bold print, followed by Dr Luu's responses

A strong value proposition is crucial for a company ' s success and survival. What is your company ' s value proposition?

"Our value proposition is to provide our clients the highest level of fiduciary service regardless of their income or net worth We have access to the most innovative financial solutions through the nation's most reputable financial companies "

Starting a business with your interest and expertise in mind is crucial. It's also necessary to ensure that this enterprise represents a concrete entrepreneurial opportunity. What other business decisions did you consider when starting your business?

"One thing I considered was a business's long-term stability I used to work in the mortgage industry, which is notorious for its highs and lows I don't think that's the best environment to be in as a business owner I was looking for a recession-proof business that could generate income that'd last not just for my lifetime but for future generations The financial industry and the solutions I work with are recession-proof and offer an income that will continue to pay even if I stop working "

Success is something that everyone strives for, but the path to achieving success is always a challenging one. It's a journey that requires hard work, perseverance, and dedication. Along the way, there will be obstacles and challenges that will test your determination and resilience. What are some hurdles you had to push past to remain in business?

"Besides being a single mother trying to raise my three kids while jumping into the financial services business My biggest professional hurdle has been teaching people that my solutions aren't "too good to be true " Twenty years ago, this was the first time anyone ever heard of a solution where you can grow your money when the market does well; but not have to risk losing your money when the market losses The clients that did trust me and the financial companies that created these solutions from day one have benefited greatly from not losing any money during all the market instability we have been through Others also benefit from a lifetime income stream they know they can't outlive "

Finances ensure businesses thrive in today's competitive world. How did you finance your business startup? (Loans, savings, seed money, etc.) and how do you evaluate and ensure your company ' s financial stability?

"The beautiful part about my business is that it requires very little startup You can start this business for under 500 dollars; that's all you need to create a million-dollar business"

Markets are changing rapidly, and businesses not ready to keep up with trends will not last. How do you stay up to date in your industry/field?

"As I've mentioned, my broker and its companies have always been the innovation leaders in the financial services market I like to compare the financial services industry to your phone; did your phone look different 15/20 years ago? It certainly did, and so has the financial industry You no longer must buy term, invest the difference, or go to your bank to open a CD or Bond There are many new solutions out there to help you grow your money more aggressively while remaining safe from any market loss Whenever I find a company with a new innovative product, I make it a point to partner with them to make it available Since my broker is a non-captive broker, it allows my business always to innovate where it needs to"

Customer retention is a critical factor in business sustainability. How do you build and foster relationships with clients/customers?

"For better or worse, the financial services industry is a bottom-line business Am I up or down 8%? If I lost you money, most advisors are stuck trying to explain the complexities of macro and microeconomics However, when you work with index products, we work with where you can't lose any money; you have nothing to worry about During 2020 I had an annual review with a doctor-client, and I had to share how he earned only 3% (significantly less than the 17% he earned last year) He shared with me how this was his #1 performing asset; he was down 15% in a mutual fund and 5% in a hedge fund The results speak for themselves"

Page 18

It's often hard to find time for self-care as entrepreneurs because most entrepreneurs take pride in working long hours and caring for their businesses. With all the stress of running a business, it's easy to overlook the importance of maintaining a regular self-care routine. How do you ensure self-care?

"To be honest, this is something I struggle with the most I am lucky to have a big, loving family who is always there to help My partner Hoang Vu goes above and beyond to support me personally and professionally Words can't express how grateful I am for the family and friends I have in my life. It also helps that our company offers fun incentives to dream destination vacations (for free) for those who produce a certain amount"

What are your top three business principles that you live by, and why those three?

"Integrity, because unfortunately, the financial services industry has been plagued with deceivers Our integrity is everything, and I make sure everyone who joins our team knows this before joining. If there's ever a hint of concern throughout our onboarding process, we don't hesitate to inform them that we aren't a good fit. (Work ethic, tenacity) Honesty: Remaining honest is critical, especially when working with our client's hard-earned money I am the kind of person who means what I say and follows through on it Education: I emphasize to my team that we are financial educators first We are teaching people about financial solutions they've never heard about before We don't keep it a secret that there are pros and cons to every option and solution, and we spend ample time discussing their options together so they can decide what's in the best interest of their financial goals

Giving back to the community takes a variety of forms. Depending on your skill set and the unique nature of your community, you will find many opportunities to help those around you. In what ways do you give back to your community or industry?

"Through all my hard work and success that has come, being able to give back has been one of my greatest joys. I've allowed many people at personal financial lows to join the business and turn their financial situation around I've also donated to wonderful charitable organizations Some notable ones are The Woman Shelter, Women that Soar, Women of Good Works, and many other local churches and nonprofits that have reached out"

Being an entrepreneur is a high risk, high reward. You could make millions, or you could make nothing at all. What advice would you give to a budding entrepreneur?

"Be diligent when jumping into a business opportunity Find an industry that's fulfilling and meaningful to you When you see an opportunity, jump on it, and give it your all to make it work. Great things take time; not everyone can make 50k in one week within their first year. However, if you surround yourself with great leaders, and have quality mentorship, keep with it; you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish!"

Motivation is vital to all aspects of life, including entrepreneurship. We need inspiration to maintain our focus on our goals. How do you stay motivated?

"You need to have a strong "why" when you get into business, and your why needs to be deep and personal. We have a saying if your why doesn't make you cry; it's not strong enough If you keep that as your "true north" throughout the highs and lows of business, you'll be able to get through and achieve anything "

Having a support system amid the chaos and crushing responsibility of founding and running a business is helpful. What supports do you have in place?

"As I mentioned before, I have a beautiful and loving family. They're my #1 system for joy to unplug from the business I have also designed my business, so I'm working with people I enjoy working with They support me with everything from my professional schedule and demands to celebrating personal life accomplishments together My business wouldn't be a fraction of what it is if I didn't have my team"

Page 19

Marketing is a dynamic and ever-changing field. Every company needs a well-planned marketing strategy that defines milestones and objectives. What are your marketing strategies for your business?

"I've found that everyone wants to tune into their favorite radio program at WIIFM 101; What's In It For Me? One of my marketing strategies is to provide win-win scenarios for whomever I'm working with I have a lot of professional partners who are CPAs, Lawyers, Realtors, Mortgage officers, etc."

Please create and write your motivational quote for this column. "A client a day keeps poverty away "

Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers?

"Call me if you want to change your life and help others be a game changer "

How can people connect with you?

VETERANVILLE'S FIRST GOLF TOURNAMENT IS A HUGE SUCCESS

On May 27, 2023, Veteransville held its first major fundraising event near the beauty of the bay at Hickory Hill Country Club and Resort in Gautier, Mississippi

Complete with vendors, good food, and the U.S. Navy's color guard, this event was the start of beautiful relationships between other nonprofits and veteran-owned businesses along the Mississippi Gulf Coast!

Veteransville is an organization whose mission is to connect Veterans and their families with the resources they need to live healthy and happy lives after they separate from military service. The funds raised from this tournament will be used to help feed homeless Veterans, provide job training and non-clinical mental health support for Veterans, and allow the organization to do several smaller community outreach projects throughout the fall and winter

Training Plans 101: Giving Your Employees the Best Chance for Success

It's always odd to me when I encounter a business or organization that does not provide employeetrainingfortheirnewstaffmembers. AsanHRprofessionalandeducator,Iknowand understand the importance of a good training plan and I've seen debilitating results in organizations that fail to provide them. Training plans are important for so many reasons, but fundamentally, a good training plan is important because it can help employees learn and develop the skills they need to do their job It can also help a company meet its operational goals Much like a business plan is a blueprint for running a business, the employee training plan is an an organized way of providing information to a trainee or new employee It outlines the approach you use to design, implement and track how well your employee is performing and where and if any adjustments need to be made in order to help your employees be more successfulintheirwork.

Taking the time to develop a good written training plan is hard work, but if done correctly, it can help prepare your employees to do their best. It is definitely worth the effort to ensure the success of your employees and the success of your organization.

Workers compensation is insurance for businesses that protect them from financial loss It is a governmentmandated program for employees who are proven to have been injured or to have become ill while actively at work at their company. Due to their occupations, the insurance program might give cash or healthcare benefits, or both.

Almost all states must carry this policy, except Texas and New Jersey, where this is optional However, while companies do have it, certain conditions apply so that sick or injured workers can claim it The employer is responsible for paying the insurance premium, and there is no cost to the employee Below are five important things to remember about Workers' Compensation.

Wake Up with Tai Chi

Tai Chi is practiced around the world as a health-promoting exercise, and was developed as a martial art in 13th-century China. Known also as Tai Chi Chuan, it combines deep breathing and relaxation with slow and gentle movements. Health studies have shown, as an innovative morning therapy, Tai Chi can help people reduce stress, improve balance, and increase general mobility. Participants also report increased muscle strength in their legs. When lessons are provided by a licensed and experienced instructor, Tai Chi can be a great way to creating a healthy lifestyle.

Benefits of using Tai Chi to wake up your mind and body include:

Decreased stress and anxiety

Increased aerobic capacity

Increased energy and stamina

Increased flexibility, balance, and agility

Increased muscle strength and definition

What makes the ancient practice so accessible is that Tai Chi is a low-impact endeavour. It places minimal stress on muscles and joints Because of the slow, fluid motions, it is generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. Tai Chi may be extremely beneficial to older adults who find other types of exercise too difficult. Tai Chi is also a relatively inexpensive hobby to get it into for most. It does not require any special equipment, and with the aid of an experienced instructor, Tai Chi may offer you that momentarily escape from your busy world and the perfect way to start your day!

MIND YOUR THOUGHTS

Matthew 6:34

Another Bible TranslationsMessage Bible Says Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes

August 2023 Inspiration
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Rev. Allison G. Daniels

Mind Your Thoughts! Be mindful of the things that you are thinking aboutdon't worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today. You have enough to think about, enough things to do. But, God doesn’t want you to even worry about that because He will supply all of your needs when you surrender your all and all unto Him and cast your cares on Him

Mind Your Thoughts! And stop worrying over things that you cannot changethings that only God can do. Yes, God knows that you see, feel, and hear everything that is going on around you but He doesn’t want you to get distracted. Instead put your trust in Him knowing that He’s still going to make a way out of it - a way just for you, my son, my daughter, my child. When you mind your thoughts and trust Me (GOD).

Mind Your Thoughts! And stay focused on the Word of God Why? Because whether you know it or not the devil isn’t using new tactics - he’s only feeding off of what you fear the most. The devil is feeding off of your emotions. If you’re walking in fear, if you’ve lost all hope, if you don’t think that you can make it, and if you don’t feel like living this old life anymore - the devil is going to bombard your mind with suicidal thoughts. The devil is going to bombard your mind with depression and the devil is going to bombard your mind with low selfesteem. My sister, my brother pick yourself and stop allowing the devil to speak negative thoughts into your life be free and move on.

Mind Your Thoughts! And stop going down memory lane rehearsing and rehearsing and rehearing everything that didn’t happen in your life. Stop allowing the devil to steal your peace and rob you of your joy. Stop allowing the devil to push you into tomorrow when you haven’t even embraced the joys of today, the love of today, the hope of today, the peace of today.

Mind Your Thoughts. And be still... settle down and know that He is still God. And God is listening to you. But you have to listen for His small still voice to guide you from this day forth because this is the day that the Lord has made so rejoice, rejoice and be glad in it. Rejoice right now and be glad in it.

Mind Your Thoughts! Be mindful of the things that you are meditating on and remember that devil comes to steal, kill and destroy you but since he can’t kill you will bombard your mind and make you think that you are crazy, make you think that God doesn’t care, make you think that God is not present.

Mind Your Thoughts! Cast down the opinions of the enemy, the opinion of your friends be careful who you allow in your circle, be careful you allow to pour into you, and trust God to send you the ones that are for you and not against you.

VETERANS' CORNER: THE PACT ACT AND YOUR VA BENEFITS

If you aren't familiar with the PACT Act, the Office of Veterans Affairs recently made this statement about it:

The PACT Act is perhaps the largest health care and benefit expansion in VA history. The full name of the law is The Sergeant First Class (SFC) Heath Robinson Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act.

The PACT Act will bring these changes:

Expands and extends eligibility for VA health care for Veterans with toxic exposures and Veterans of the Vietnam, Gulf War, and post-9/11 eras

Adds 20+ more presumptive conditions for burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic exposures

Adds more presumptive-exposure locations for Agent Orange and radiation

Requires VA to provide a toxic exposure screening to every Veteran enrolled in VA health care

Helps us improve research, staff education, and treatment related to toxic exposures

If you’re a Veteran or survivor, you can file claims now to apply for PACT Act-related benefits.

Talk to your representative at your local VA , contact us for more information, or go online to start your own claim now Here's the link:

I used to work in the oil field for 10 years where I invested a percentage to my 401K. It has been 8 years since I have worked there or in a similar industry. Shortly afterward, I ended up working in a different field that offered 403's. So, I opened another account to be able to keep my previous investment available in hopes that I would return to the oil industry. I am currently working in an industry that has IRA plan that I have agreed to contribute bimonthly. I also have a personal investment account where I can buy, sell, or trade if I wanted. Each of these accounts has proved to be beneficial and profitable. I don't mind keeping track of these accounts.

My question is, "Is it better to stay diversified with 401K, 403, and IRA accounts being that each one of these investments has its own perks in the long run, or should I consolidate so that I can manage gains and losses from the 401K that I don't have any financial control over or can't contribute to purchasing more shares in the oilfield? If it is better to consolidate, which account would be best for future financial security?"

Thank you for taking my question. I look forward to wise counsel.

Dear Gloria,

Thank you for your question regarding financial planning. This is an area that is not in my wheelhouse of expertise. As a business consultant, I recommend that individuals get at least 2 referrals from financial planners in their area. However, I have been going through a similar financial planning endeavor, so I will share with you the steps I took and hope this helps.

Here are some questions I have to consider as I go through this journey. My first step was to get a notebook and pen and answer the questions in writing about my financial future What does it look like? Whom will it impact? How much longer do I want to be involved in a career? What experiences would I like to pursue once I change the course of my retirement? Do you have long-term healthcare? Do you have all of your paperwork done including your will and end-of-life documents completed? What is paid for? What do I want to invest in?

A favorite article that helped me is “7 Important Questions a Financial Plan Can Help You Answer “written by Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz in October 2020. Below is a link to the article that really makes me consider things I hadn’t thought about. A portion of that article is included within this reply.

https://www.schwab.com/learn/story/7-important-questions-financial-plan-can-help-youanswer

“1) How realistic is it to reach all of my dreams and goals?

The only way to make any of that happen is to get specific A financial plan starts with helping you zero in on what you own and what you owe and clarifies how your income can cover essentials as well as savings and discretionary expenses It will help you focus on your goals, put a dollar amount on each and create a realistic timeline for achieving them

2) What should I do first?

Trying to save, invest and pay off debt all at once can be overwhelming. A basic plan helps you prioritize, whether you're creating a savings strategy, trying to reduce debt or both. It can give you a blueprint for acting; for example, getting a 401(k) match first, next paying off nondeductible high-interest debt, then contributing to your child's education. These aren't high finance issues; these are everyday issues.

3) How should I invest for retirement as well as shorter-term goals like a down payment or kids' education?

How you invest has a lot to do with when you need the money The longer the timeframe, the more risk you can afford to take, depending on your own feelings about risk Generally speaking, the money you'll need within the next six-to-eighteen months, like an emergency fund or a vacation, should be in cash Money for intermediate goals that you may need in two-to-four years, like a home down payment, might be conservatively invested in bonds.

PAGE 45 DR BIZBUZZ BEST IN BUSINESS
Ask Dr. BizBuzz

Savings for longer-term goals more than five-to-seven years out, for instance, retirement or college, could reasonably be invested in stocks Once you've answered questions one and two, you'll more easily be able to pinpoint how to invest for your various goals

4) What's the best way to protect my family and me?

A financial plan can also help you focus on crucial issues like emergency preparation and insurance. Do you have enough cash to cover at least three-to-six months' essential living expenses? When was the last time you reviewed your health insurance coverage? Do you need life or disability insurance and how much? These are the deeper questions a plan can help you answer to protect your family from the unexpected.

5) When will I be able to retire and how much will I need?

As you prioritize your savings goals, retirement should be high on your list, because the earlier you start planning the better But planning for when you'll be able to retire isn't about saving blindly; it's about projecting your needs with some degree of accuracy So back to question one Your current expenses provide a reasonable starting point to estimate a retirement budget This will give you an idea of how much you need to save when you can realistically retire, and if you're on track

6) What if something should happen to me?

This is the key reason for estate planning another concept that many people feel doesn't apply to them. But we all need to think about who will take care of our children, who will make financial and medical decisions if we can't do it for ourselves, and how we want our assets and personal property distributed. Again, it's not about "how much," but rather about "how" we want these decisions to be made. A financial plan helps keep you in charge, so someone else doesn't make decisions for you.

7)

What am I overlooking?

There are a lot of pieces to our financial lives And sometimes it's hard to see them all, let alone how they fit together A financial plan lays them out for you so you can see if something is missing If you can work with a financial planning professional, so much the better A set of trained eyes can help you address any savings shortfalls, improve your budget, and save on taxes.

PAGE 46 DR BIZBUZZ BEST IN BUSINESS Ask Dr. BizBuzz

Answers that go beyond money:

The process of creating a financial plan can be just as important as the plan itself It can help you think through and more confidently make life decisions; it can give you the assurance that your family is covered in the face of an uncertain world; and it can help couples be on the same page as they deal with present worries and future hopes. In other words, financial planning can be liberating not just for you personally, but for your entire family as well.”

The more that you learn and the more you visualize what type of life you want to create, the better the foundation for it happening. Finding a financial planner will be the challenge. Ask for recommendations. and Interview them with your questions.

Good luck

Coming in september: Leading with compassion!

All year long we are focusing on the topics that our human resource managers and business owners have requested. In September, we're turning away from looking at processes, as we start to look more closely at people.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart.” Compassionate leaders lead and manage with both their head and their heart. It's all about empathy. In September, we will be diving into the characteristics of a compassionate leader, why it's important to lead with compassion, and ways that you can develop your skills as a compassionate leader.

We hope you will join us!
