COVER STORY

COVER STORY: Life Coach Elizabeth Harper: Helping You Create the Life You Envision! by Sheila Farr

As the owner of Elizabeth Harper Coaching, Elizabeth Harper is a women’s life coach who specializes in self-image and self-confidence coaching. Through her coaching programs, she helps women who feel trapped in a disempowering self-image overcome endless wishful thinking and the pain of not living as their ideal self to begin living as a confident and empowered woman. Best in Business Magazine sat down with Elizabeth earlier this month to learn more about her, her business, and with whom she likes to connect with to work that magic that is all her own. The following is what we learned about Elizabeth and how she views success. BB: Tell us a little about how you found your way into the coaching profession. EH: That’s a long story. I loved reading books by motivational coaches and speakers and always wanted to be a life coach, but it was a journey getting there. I had overcome two lifethreatening illnesses, poverty, abandonment, abuse, being a single parent-you name it, and I probably went through it. Yet I just didn’t just go through these experiences, I learned from them and successfully defeated a lot of hardships by constantly re-inventing myself and my life. And this ability and mindset was always a willingness to try, even if I felt fear or doubt or had no support. I still found a way to continue persevering and I eventually learned that this was the embodiment of self-confidence.

Empowerment Coach Elizabeth Harper

Confidence wasn’t the lack of fear or never failing, which I did a lot along the way, but it was having the self-image of someone that could grow, transform, and be an innovator. Confidence wasn’t innate but was a skill I developed. It is a huge part of our self-image. So, after being in several different careers include holistic health coaching, I began coaching in self-confidence and image because these attributes were a common factor that kept people stuck no matter how badly they wanted change. I saw this over and over again in life. I also wanted to create a place where woman could learn, support, grow and uplift each other. So, I founded the Academy of Confident Women which focuses on confidence, self-image and manifesting a life that aligns with the best version of ourselves. It’s opening soon to all women.

COVER STORY

BB: Did your profession require any special training or certification(s)? If so, please share a little with us about what was required. EH: Although my profession does not require any special training or certifications, I believe it to be quite helpful and lends a certain amount of credibility to the profession of life coaching. I first started coaching in holistic health and as a result obtained a BS in health and wellness and certification as a holistic health practitioner. I also worked towards a BS in psychology and obtained certifications as a certified professional life coach, confidence coach, habits coach, NLP practitioner, law of attraction coach, and image consultant among other certifications. As you can clearly see I love to learn and apply knowledge to my personal and business life. BB: What is your favorite aspect of the work you do? EH: I’d have to say it’s being able to use the cumulation of life events and hardships that I’ve gone through and successfully overcome as a way to empathize, empower, and educate my clients in knowing that setbacks are temporary, and we have control over our lives. Watching a client who is stuck in a false self-image (perhaps from childhood), doubting their ideas, or believing they are not capable of being anything more, realize they get to decide who they are, the choices they make and how they live their life is priceless. That is my favorite aspect of my coaching. BB: Who do you serve? Do you have a “target customer” or someone that you most enjoy working with? EH: I work with women who aren’t living as their ideal selves and who want to improve their confidence in certain areas of their lives. My target customer is a woman who feels stuck in an endless cycle of doing, being and habitually responding to life the same way day after day that isn’t serving them. They want results that they can see. Even though I focus on confidence and image coaching, these two aspects cover a wide range of concerns in life, so I am not entirely limited in who I coach. BB: What is the greatest challenge you've experienced as an entrepreneur? EH: One of my greatest challenges was remaining focused on my business and not running on autopilot and feeling the need to accept every opportunity that came my way. While every opportunity that I took had the potential to change my life, it became more important to be more selective in my choices. After experiencing burnout (work related physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion from being overwhelmed with demands), I learned the hard way to begin to make conscious choices based on what was important to me and my business. Sometimes life isn’t always about doing more but doing less by being more selective.

BB: Tell us about something you've encountered as an entrepreneur that you didn't anticipate prior to starting your business. EH: The amount of continuous learning and implementing different skills and knowledge that goes into a business. It’s on-going and as an entrepreneur it’s necessary to learn and keep up with different skills such as social media, marketing, technology, the latest platforms and so forth, which are always evolving and changing. These things take time so be fully prepared to adjust as you go along and be willing to invest your time into your business. You’re going to make mistakes; everyone does while learning something new. So, if I can help give women the skills to gain confidence and elevate their image to match who they were truly meant to be, then that is success to me. If one person changes it usually affects those around them as well, so it has a domino effect and that’s really awesome. BB: What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming an entrepreneur?

EH: My advice would be to embody the identity (self-image) of someone who is an entrepreneur in your chosen field. What do they do? How do they act? Who do they hang out with? What skills do they have to learn? How many hours do they work? What is their message? How do they show up in their life? What does their day look like? Ask Dr. Bizbuzz Dear Dr. BizBuzz, "I started a new business in 2019 but I am not making money. I am barely meeting my obligations of rent and supplies. How can I turn my business around? Where do I start? Angie Enterprise, AL

Dear Angie, Thank you for asking this question about turning your business around. Any business may be turned around to obtain success and profitability. It is not an easy process and takes commitment on your part to take the necessary steps to ensure your business success. Your letter points out several challenges: Your new business is just 3 years old. Your business is not profitable. Your vision to make your business successful has some gaps. Now, what to do? Becoming a good steward of money and making sure your finances are paying your bills is important. Did you quit your full-time job too soon? Did you not save enough money to make sure that your business and personal expenses would be paid for at least six months? Do you balance your personal and business finances daily? Do you stay within a budget for both personal and business expenditures? So many other questions to ask yourself to find out what the root cause for your concern….. Here is the first important step in your new direction to become successful and sustainable….

You can ask Dr. BizBuzz Send your business questions to us at: bestinbusinesspublishing@gmail.com

If the answer to these questions is "NO", then stop and take the time to step back and ask for some guidance. Asking for help in building your business is a strength not a weakness. There are several national organizations that offer free counseling and can give you another set of eyes to develop your written business plan. Check to see if there is a women's business center in your area, Small Business Development Center (SBDC), or contact www.score.org for the nearest location. Each have expert counselors in all areas of business development. Your business plan does not need to be lengthy. Start with a 2–3-page plan that will give you some easy strategic tactics to implement and monitor to see if they produce the reports you anticipate. Remember that not all tactics are without cost, so decide what type of budget for your business you want/need to invest to produce results of any type. Focus on completion of your tactics and what criteria you need to evaluate their outcomes. Managing a successful business takes commitment, patience, communication, and a plan. If you choose to not plan, plan to fail. If you choose any other type of plan not written but remains in your mind, then expect that your results may be the same as you started with. Eva Gregory of Enlightened Spiritual Business Academy asks the question (and I ask myself daily): What if success is my only option? The answer? SUCCESS IS MY ONLY OPTION! May your business plan be your new path to success! Dr. BizBuzz PS. Let us know how it goes. Until then, working to pay your bills is a great way to begin again. And it is ok to begin again any day, step of your journey into business.

MOVE YOUR BUS BY RON CLARK Ron Clark travels across the country consulting with innovative Fortune 500 companies, whip-smart business leaders, and talented individuals across all walks of life. And the one thing he’s learned for certain is: no matter what your business does, the members of your team are the key to unlocking its success. But is your team moving at top speed?

Imagine your company as a bus filled with people who either help or hinder the team’s ability to move it forward: Runners (who consistently go above and beyond for the good of the company), Joggers (who do their jobs without pushing themselves), Walkers (who are just getting pulled along), and Riders (who hinder success and drag the team down). And as the boss, it’s the Driver’s job to steer the organization, encourage the workers to keep the “bus” moving, and sometimes kick off those who aren’t pulling their weight.
