Camping is usually a bare minimum ordeal. A few boxes of matches, unless you’re skilled at stone striking, a sleeping bag and canned foods cross your mind. Perhaps a cardboard thin camping mattress if you’re really lucky. Unless of course, you’re on a luxury camping safari in Kenya... We’re out there, what about you?

CAPE TOWN

S

ituated on the southern tip of the continent, Cape Town - recognised as Africa’s Leading Beach Destination by World Travel Awards - is not only the most popular tourist destination in South Africa, but Africa as a whole. A city of great beauty, its natural setting is complimented by a wealth of contemporary hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. While Table Mountain remains the star of the show, the city is increasingly recognised as a gastronomic hub, drawing in cultured visitors from across the continent. Many tourists also visit the outstanding beaches which surround the city, with the unique geography of the region making it possible to visit several different locations in the same day. Cape Town has several notable cultural attractions, with the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, built on top of part of the docks of the Port of Cape Town, being the most visited. The hotspot is also one of the city's most popular shopping venues, with several hundred shops and the Two Oceans Aquarium on hand, while the V&A also hosts the Nelson Mandela Gateway, through which ferries depart for Robben Island. Among savvy travellers the city is noted for its architectural heritage, with the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world. Cape Dutch style, which combines the architectural traditions of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Indonesia, is most visible in Constantia, the old government buildings in the Central Business District, and along Long Street. The city also encloses the 36 hectare Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden which contains protected natural forest and fynbos, along with a variety of animals and birds. SEPTEMBER 2013 // ISSUE 22

VICTORIA FALLS

O

ne of the most spectacular sights anywhere in nature, Victoria Falls has to be seen to be believed. Situated on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, the falls see the Zambezi River travel through a series of gorges, with the cascading water drawing nearly half a million visitors each year. A famous feature - for the brave hearted - is the naturally formed Devil's Pool, near the edge of the falls on Livingstone Island on the Zambian side. When the river flow is at a certain level, usually between September and December, a rock barrier forms an eddy with minimal current allowing adventurous swimmers to splash around in relative safety a few feet from the point where the water cascades over the falls. The number of visitors to the Zimbabwean side of the falls has historically been much higher than the number visiting the Zambia side, due to the greater development of the visitor facilities there. However, this has been reversed in recent years, with Zambia now offering a developed range of luxury accommodation to the discerning traveller.

MARRAKECH

C

osmopolitan, international Marrakech, like its archetypal counterparts of Madrid, Paris, Barcelona and London, surprises by its creative energy. In a little over a decade, the destination has transformed itself from a backpacker favourite (high on charm, low on comfort) into the epitome of boho-chic. Swathes of traditional town houses, known as riads, have been converted into boutique retreats, while away from the towns oasis hotels, tented desert camps and seaside hideaways all await. The ramparts, gardens and fine palaces of the imperial city’s golden age are the backdrop for cultural, sporting, artistic and economic fervour. Marrakech which took the title of Africa’s Leading Destination at the 2012 World Travel Awards - means a change of scenery in the space of short hop with a predictably pleasant climate; it means suffering the agony of having to choose between the 1,000 activities on offer in the city. One star attraction for the luxury traveller is Kasbah Tamadot, purchased by world famous entrepreneur Richard Branson in 1998 after he spotted it on one of his ballooning expeditions. Set at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, just an hour’s drive from Marrakech, Kasbah Tamadot is an exclusive retreat for the privileged few, with the secrets revealed only to those who pass through its heavy wooden doors. 20

Tours of the town, safaris in game parks, and camping trips can all be included in a vacation plan. Nightlife in Mombasa is always exciting, and the city offers many dance clubs and casinos that cater to a variety of entertainment tastes. MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE, KENYA

C

overing an area of over 1,500 square km, the Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most popular tourism destinations in Kenya. The reserve is located in the Great Rift Valley in primarily open grassland. Wildlife tends to be most concentrated on the reserve’s western escarpment. The swampy land provides more access to water and less access to tourists. The eastern end is closest to Nairobi and hence easier to access by tourists. The Masai Mara is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife viewing areas. The annual wildebeests migration alone involves over 1.5 million animals arriving in July and departing in November. There have been some 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles and over 400 birds

52

species recorded on the reserve. Nowhere in Africa is wildlife more abundant, and it is for this reason a visitor hardly misses to see the big five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino). Other game include hippopotami, cheetah, Grant’s gazelle, impala, topi, Coke’s hartebeest, giraffe, Roan antelope and the nocturnal bat-eared fox. However, wildebeest are by far the dominant inhabitants of the Masai Mara. Maasai Mara has a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, tastes and interests. There are very basic campsites where you can pitch a tent and sleep under canvas in the wild, well appointed safari lodges, luxury tented camps with large, fully furnished tents, small private camps for your exclusive use and much, much, more.

ominated at Africa’s Leading National Park at the World Travel Awards, Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man’s interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA

T

he oldest and most popular national park in Tanzania, also a UNESCO world heritage site and recently proclaimed a seventh world wide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle. The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary

56

leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the south-eastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur there, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. As enduring as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterises the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK, BOTSWANA

W

hether arriving by air or road, the first glimpse of the river – deep and dazzling in the sandy terrain – is always breathtaking. It appears as a swathe of brilliant, peacock blue ribbon, winding its way through the tiny town of Kasane, and ensuing wilderness – the Chobe National Park. Undoubtedly one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, the Chobe supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalleled anywhere else in the country. Established in 1968, the park covers approximately 11,700 sq kms, encompassing floodplains, swamps and woodland. The Chobe River forms its northern boundary. There are four distinct geographical areas in the park: the Chobe Riverfront, the Ngwezumba pans, Savuté and Linyanti. The most accessible and frequently visited of Botswana’s big game country, the Chobe Riverfront is most famous for its large herds of elephants and cape buffalo, which during the dry winter months converge upon the river to drink. During this season, on an afternoon game drive, visitors may see hundreds of elephants at one time. Over 460 bird species have been recorded in the park, making it one of Africa’s premier venues for bird Safaris.

SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA

S

outh Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia, the southernmost of three national parks in the valley of the Luangwa River, is a world-renowned wildlife haven. It supports large populations of giraffe, as well as herds of elephant and buffalo often several hundred strong, while the Luangwa River supports abundant crocodiles and hippopotamuses. Having been founded as a game reserve in 1938, it became a national park in 1972 and is now considered one of the bestknown national parks in Africa for walking safaris. With about 400 of Zambia’s 732 species of birds appearing in the park, including 39 birds of prey and 47 migrant species, there is plenty for the birdwatcher to spot, whatever the season. Among the more common trees in the valley are the mopane, leadwood, winterthorn, the tall vegetable ivory palm, the marula and the magnificent tamarind tree. There are also some magnificent baobab specimens and a few large ebony forests to admire.

It was also here in October 2011 that the pilot prince borrowed a helicopter and whisked Kate Middleton to a lake on the slopes of nearby Mount Kenya, where he proposed, against the backdrop of the Rift Valley. Lewa Downs, owned by the parents of Jecca Craig (William’s close friend and rumoured ex-girlfriend), is a safari in the true “Out of Africa” sense.
