he industry’s elite travelled from around the globe to join guests of honour HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority and Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz al-Thani. Victor Agha, Chairman, La Cigale Hotel, said: “We are truly honoured to hold the 20th anniversary of the World Travel Awards Grand Final, right here in Doha, capital of the fast-emerging tourism destination of Qatar.” Winners on the night included Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts which was voted “World’s Leading Hotel Brand” whilst JW Marriott Marquis Dubai was named “World’s Leading New Hotel” and “World’s Leading Hotel” went to Burj Al Arab. “World’s Leading Airline” and “World’s Leading Airline – First Class” were awarded to Etihad Airways, the national flag carrier of the UAE, whilst Hainan Airlines of China was named “World’s Leading Airline – Economy Class”

World Travel Awards began its 20th anniversary celebrations with its opening led in Dubai. The Middle East Ceremony Gala 2013 took place at Le Royal MĂŠridien Beach Resort & Spa, Dubai on 5 May 2013.

tihad Airways was one of the shining stars on the night, capturing “Middle East’s Leading Airline”, whilst Emirates took “Middle East’s Leading Airline Business Class”. Other victories included “Middle East’s Leading Business Travel Destination” going to Doha, Qatar. “Middle East’s Leading Villa” went to Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, and Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai collected “Middle East’s Leading Resort”. Abu Dhabi’s continuing rise to tourism stardom was rewarded too, as it took home a host of top honours, including the award for the “Middle East’s Leading Exhibition & Convention Centre”. Newcomer Coco Privé Kuda Hithi Island was named “Indian Ocean’s Leading New Resort”, whilst One&Only Reethi Rah picked up “Indian Ocean’s Leading Resort”. The Maldives continuing rise to tourism stardom was rewarded too, as it took home top honours for leading airport for Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, “Indian Ocean’s Leading Tourist Board” and “Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination”. Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, Maldives Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture, said: “It was an honour to host a prestigious event of this level for the first time, which also coincided with the 40th year of tourism in the Maldives. Hosting of the event in the Maldives is an assurance to the travel trade that Maldives is ready for event-based tourism in a luxury and private setting. He added: “Tourism, which began as an unplanned activity in 1972, is the lifeline of the Maldives economy. As we celebrate 40 years of tourism, 108 exclusive resorts, 19 Hotels, 81 Guest Houses and 160 Safari Vessels/Liveaboards with 28,392 beds have been developed which constitute a billion dollar industry. ufthansa, Intercontinental Hotels, Avis, and Kuoni were among the top brand names to emerge victorious at the red-carpet ceremony, which returned to the region for the third time in four years. It was an evening of sweet success for nations across the continent. The Portuguese capital Lisbon fended off competition from the likes of Venice, St Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Prague and Paris to win the coveted title of “Europe’s Leading City Break Destination”. Meanwhile Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul nudged ahead of Hotel Cipriani (Venice), The Dorchester (London), Four Seasons Hotel Milano, Hôtel Le Bristol (Paris) and Beau-Rivage Palace (Switzerland) to claim the title of “Europe’s Leading Hotel”. Turkey’s ascendancy up the tourism order was acknowledged with The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism named “Europe’s Leading Tourist Board”. The nation’s leading-edge hotels also scooped a series individual awards, including “Europe’s Leading Luxury Hotel” (Mardan Palace) and “Europe’s Leading Family Resort” (Angel’s Peninsula). The WTA awards programme, hailed as the ‘Oscars of the travel

industry’ by the global media, highlights and rewards those travel brands that have made the greatest contribution to the industry over the past year. epresentatives from more than 30 nations attended WTA’s Caribbean & The Americas Ceremony 2013, which was hosted by Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority and Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa. It was an evening of travel triumph for nations across the region. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Puerto Rico won the coveted title of “Caribbean’s New Hotel”, Coco Reef Resort (Tobago) picked up “Caribbean’s Leading Hotel”, whilst Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island (British Virgin Islands) was voted “Caribbean Leading Private Island”. Jamaica’s continuing rise up the global tourism order was acknowledged after it was named “Caribbean’s Leading Destination”. In North America, Las Vegas saw off competition from New York, Miami, San Francisco, Montreal and Vancouver to win the coveted title of “North America’s Leading Destination”. New York won the “North America’s Leading City Break Destination” title, while American Airlines was voted “North America’s Leading Airline”. Joining guests of honour were Antigua & Barbuda Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack and Prime Minister Dr. Hon Baldwin Spencer and at the event were government ministers, chairmen, and presidents from the region’s premier travel companies.

Inaugural World Ski Awards PROVES A PHENOMENAL SUCCESS World Ski Awards recognised the very best in the global ski tourism industry during its inaugural Gala Ceremony at A-ROSA Kitzb端hel.

he event, attended by 200 handpicked guests, saw the title of “World’s Best Ski Resort” go to Val Thorens (France), while Bighorn, Revelstoke (Canada) took “World’s Best Ski Chalet”, Aurelio Lech (Austria) won “World’s Best Ski Boutique Hotel” and “World’s Best Ski Hotel” went to The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch (USA). In a special presentation at the end of the evening, the WSA Academy presented a unique trophy for “Outstanding Services to Ski Tourism” to Dr. Josef Burger, chief executive of the Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel. Taking place over the weekend of November 15th-17th in Austria’s legendary winter sports destination, guests took part in a three-day programme of unrivalled networking events, dinners, and exclusive ski experience activities. Ski tourism figureheads and market leaders from North America, Europe Asia, South America and Australasia attended. Sion Rapson, managing director, World Ski Awards, said: “The reaction to this – our inaugural event – has been phenomenal. Hundreds of thousands travel professionals and skiers across the globe have voted for their favourite resorts, chalets and hotels.
