BESTINTRAVELMAGAZINE.COM
ROTANA
Rotana is opening its first property in Oman, the five-star Salalah Rotana Resort. Its 400 rooms and suites are connected by an elaborate network of manmade waterways that link all waterfront hotels and residential areas in Muriya’s Salalah Beach Resort to the Indian Ocean. Omer Kaddouri, President & CEO of Rotana, says: “We are excited to begin a new journey today at the first hotel to be operated by Rotana in Oman. We will be working closely Oman’s Ministry of Tourism on developing the country’s appeal and establishing Salalah as a new and upcoming year-round tourist destination.” Salalah Rotana Resort form part of the government’s strategy to strengthen Oman’s reputation as a luxury hospitality haven. The resort offers guests a wide variety of food and beverage venues including a lobby lounge café, all-day dining and specialty restaurants as well as a beach restaurant and pool bar. The hotel is fully-equipped to cater to business visitors with a selection of meeting rooms, a business centre, Bodylines leisure and fitness club, a large outdoor pool, massage services, and a kids’ club.

Guests can rest, relax and rejuvenate at the resort’s Zen the spa; Rotana’s home-grown spa concept derived from ancient holistic Asian philosophies. A calming space where stress melts away, Zen the spa at Rotana promises to provide each guest the opportunity to ‘rebalance the body’ with a wide variety of relaxing ‘ritual’ treatments from full body massages, facials and soothing wraps. In the coming months, the resort will grow to feature 45 villas and we expect the resort to be fully operational in time for the popular Khareef season when the area receives a large number of visitors. The resort has also been commended by Sheikh Khalid bin Mussalam Al Rowas, Director General of the Ministry of Tourism in Salalah, who commented that the hotel will have a profound impact on tourism in the region in line with the Government’s vision for tourism development. Salalah Rotana Resort will offer a fully-integrated destination in the city that supports increased investment and development of infrastructure which includes the new international airport and expansion of the Port of Salalah. In 2013, 435,000 visitors from the Gulf region visited Salalah during the Khareef season, an increase of over 80,000 on the previous year as visitor numbers continue to rise year on year. The new Salalah Airport is expected to be completed in 2014, with the capacity to handle one million passengers. Future expansion is planned to extend capacity to six million passengers. Spread over an area of 15.6 million square meters with 8.2km beach front, Salalah Beach is located in one of the most breath-taking natural settings in the Sultanate between spectacular mountains, fresh water springs and tropical scenery. Visitors find themselves immersed in traditional Arabian lifestyles and values expressed through the surrounding architecture, wildlife and frankincense trees.

The definition of ultra-luxury, Burj al Arab is not just the leading hotel in the world, it is also one of the most unique. Its exterior, designed to resemble a billowing sail, has become one of the most photographed structures in the world. However only a small number of visitors to Dubai ever get to feast their eyes on the Burj’s spectacular interior. Al Mahara, the flagship seafood restaurant, typifies the quirkiness of the Burj. Diners take a simulated submarine ride down to the restaurant, which is surrounded by an aquarium. As you feast on such delicacies as beluga caviar, an aquatic soap opera starring fish and sharks unfolds before your eyes. For unrivalled views across Dubai, head to the Skyview Bar on the top floor and suspended 200 metres above sea level. From here you can walk across to the giant helipad, which was once transformed into a tennis court for a match between Andre Agassi and Roger Federer. The helipad has also been converted into a golf bunker where US Open Champion Rory McIlroy hit a series of breathtaking bunker shots towards Jumeirah Beach.

DUBAI EXPO
Hospitality key to Dubai’s Expo 2020 plans APRIL 2014 // ISSUE 24
47
Dubai has announced plans to boost its number of hotel rooms by 80,000 following the emirate winning hosting rights to World Expo 2020. An estimated 25 million visitors are expected to attend the six-month spectacle, which will be held in the MENA region for the first time in the history of the event. Due to its geographic positioning, an estimated 70 per cent of visitors would originate from outside the host nation, making it the most international event in the history of Expo and offering unprecedented reach and exposure to participants and visitors alike. The world fair is the world’s largest non-sporting event, and the third-largest event behind the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. It aims not only to open up opportunities for trade and tourism, but also to put the UAE in the world’s spotlight. Dubai Expo 2020 will be hosted at Dubai Trade Centre – Jebel Ali, a single 438-hectare site, among one of the largest in Expo history. Situated between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, directly adjacent to the new Dubai World Central Airport, the site will provide optimal ease of access for visitors. Dubai Expo 2020 would serve as a platform for ideas and solutions across nations and organisation, inspiring a generation and driving lasting social change. The theme for Expo 2020 is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” which offers a vision of progress and development based on shared purpose and commitment in today’s highly interconnected world. The event will also generate employment for a growing region with a young and dynamic population, creating more than 275,000 jobs in Dubai over the next seven years. Meanwhile, the Dubai economy could expect to benefit from an estimated US$23bn as a direct result of Expo 2020.

DUBAI EXPO Dubai Expo would take place immediately before the UAE marks its 50th anniversary in 2021, offering a unique opportunity to connect Expo to the national celebrations as the country enjoys a moment of collective reflection. The nation has outlined plans to invest $8 billion on infrastructure projects ahead of the event. Works include plans to extend Dubai Metro’s Red Line to Dubai World Central. The expansion also includes the construction of a new stretch of line from the existing terminus at Jebel Ali to Al Maktoum International Airport, which is next to the proposed Expo site at Dubai World Central. Voted “World’s Leading Destination” at World Travel Awards 2013, Dubai hosted more than 10 million visitors last year. Tourism is one of the key contributors to the city’s economy, generating US$4.4bn in revenues for Dubai in 2011. Among the city’s many attractions, The Dubai Mall, located at the foot of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, recorded a total footfall of over 65 million last year – more than the number of annual tourists to New York City.

Award-winning Abu Dhabi is currently enjoying a surge in visitor numbers. A total of 2,806,283 guests checked into Abu Dhabi’s 150 hotels and hotel apartments in 2013, up 18 per cent on 2012, according to figures released by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. The UK remains Abu Dhabi’s second largest overseas market, behind India, with 162,973 Britons checking into the emirate’s hotels last year, a 16 per cent increase on 2012. British guests accounted for 763,151 guest nights – an increase of 25 per cent year on year - with an average length of stay of 4.68 nights, again up seven percent from the previous year. “This is a highly satisfying performance, particularly as we have seen 13 more hotels and hotel apartments open throughout 2013. QUITO
Quito boasts a host of historical attractions, reflected in the city’s victory at World Travel Awards 2013 when it was voted “South America’s Leading Destination”. At the heart of the city is the Spanish colonial centre, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site as long ago as 1978. The area has recently undergone a renaissance, with the city government investing hundreds of millions of US dollars on improvements to infrastructure, attractions and amenities. The cobblestoned streets and pastel-coloured mansions which hem the revitalised San Francisco Church now dazzle once again as they welcome guests from around the world. Other projects planned as part of the 35th anniversary celebrations include recovering landmark buildings to house two new universities, the construction of the cultural complex and recreational Cumandá (in a former bus terminal), the opening of the Monastery of Carmen Alto Museum, the rehabilitation of the St. Augustine Sala Capitular and San Blas squares, Victoria Square and the Capitol Theatre.

Close by, La Mariscal is considered the centre of entertainment in Quito. Here the city offers visitors endless options for dining, shopping, dancing and anything else they might desire. A meeting point for local people, the cosmopolitan atmosphere also takes in a huge array of cultural experiences, dance schools and craft shops. Latin Americans are renowned for their sense of fun, meaning festivities will extend well into the night! But it is not

all partying, with Quito also offering a developed cultural sector. In recent years the city has carried out various projects to offer residents and visitors a range cultural sites and opportunities for artistic expression. Quito will step up to host its inaugural World Travel Awards ceremony in the summer of 2014. The glittering red carpet event will take place at the historic Centro Cultural Itchimbia. Forming the centrepiece of Parque Itchimbia, the Centro Cultural Itchimbia is a magnificent glass-and-iron building, modelled after the city’s original Mercado Santa Clara. The centre hosts regular art exhibits and cultural events, as well as serving as a museum.
World City Offering a significant boost to tourism in Ecuador, the Mariscal Antonio Jose d Sucre International Airport in Quito opened last year. Set to welcome five million passengers in its first year, the airport offers a longer runway than its predecessor meaning planes no longer have to stop at Guayaquil to refuel on the way to European destinations. Quito is also set to boost its business credentials with the launch of one of the largest urban development projects in recent years: the Quito Convention & Events Centre Complex. The project will occupy an 11 hectares site on the grounds of the old airport.

Mauritius boasts 177km of coastline, the majority of which features beaches of dazzling beauty. The coral reef means that much of the shoreline is protected by translucent, calm lagoons, with the opportunity for snorkelling, diving and watersports out by the reef. But there is plenty more to Mauritius than paradise beaches and cloudless skies. The island is also a paradise for adventure and exploration, and beyond its stunning coastal ring lies a less-explored yet equally spectacular interior – forested mountains and gorges, bright tropical flowers and palm trees, meadows and arable land, all interspersed with emerald-green jagged peaks. Visit the wild virgin forests of Black River Gorges National Park. Here the Black River waterfall cascades into a steep gorge, whilst the enchanted forest is inhabited by endangered birds, rare plant species and monkeys. The park is also home to the famous pink pigeon which is staging a very gradual comeback from the brink of extinction. APRIL 2014 // ISSUE 24
The southern interior rises sharply to the island’s highest peak, Mount Piton (828m). The village of Chamarel is surrounded by lush coffee and pineapple plantations, and is best known for its barren volcanic landscape. Perhaps the country’s single biggest asset is the relaxed charm of its warm and welcoming people: a fusion of Asia, Africa, France and Britain, reflecting its history as an important trading post. Unsurprisingly, Mauritius is perfect territory for honeymooners, with palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear water and coral reef-sheltered lagoons – plus an incredible array of luxury hotels.
