Europe THE WORLD IN A CONTINENT

Stretching from Asia in the East to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in the West, and from the tip of African in the South to the icy waters of the Arctic in the North, Europe is the second smallest continent by surface area but also the second most densely populated. Home to some of the most famous historical and cultural sites in the world, as well as many of the world’s most visited countries, it is as much of a destination as it is an experience.

Europe

Europe’s immense cultural diversity, rich history, and unparalleled scenic beauty ensures that every visitor will enjoy a unique experience tailored to their liking. Despite its relatively small size, each country within its borders has its own unique heritage: Athens is the birthplace of democracy, Florence gave rise to the Renaissance, Paris is the capital of love, Istanbul marks the meeting point of East and West, the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain – the list is inexhaustible. It is this which draws millions visitors every year, many of them returning multiple times but always leaving with memories of new experiences. Part of what makes Europe so appealing to visitors is its open borders and excellent infrastructure, which makes travelling between countries and to and from the continent almost effortless. Flights are quick, comfortable and most importantly affordable, and often a trip to a single country becomes a journey across several. Travellers with more time at their disposal can also opt to explore the continent and its surrounds by car or bus. Regularly serviced roads paired with welltravelled routes make self-drive tours a pleasant and unique way to explore the region. Grand Tours by rail are yet another option for those with nostalgic yearnings, and travellers are almost guaranteed to enjoy the journey as much as each destination. It’s not just Europe’s culture which is richly diverse, but its landscapes and climate too. From the azure blue

waters and sandy golden beaches of the Mediterranean to the impressive Alps which offer a unique experience for every season, the picturesque scenery of Tuscany to the lush vineyards of France and Italy, the continent’s inherent variety provides an abundance of activities for yearround thrills. Over the years, decades and centuries of its development, one word has become increasingly synonymous with Europe: luxury. Exclusive resorts and hotels are found in every corner of the continent, each with exceedingly opulent offerings attracting celebrities, moguls, captains of industry, and world leaders. Found on some of the most valuable and pristine land in all of Europe, these exquisite hotels and resorts offer unparalleled views and one-of-a-kind experiences which are the exclusive privilege of clientele. With its well-preserved historical sites, amazing natural wonders, unrivalled luxury offerings, and promise of excitement and adventure at almost every turn, Europe is a traveller’s delight and the best way to visit it is multiple times – how else will travellers manage to see the Colosseum in Rome, visit the Eiffel tower in Paris, gaze at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, bask in the splendour of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, ponder the origins of Stonehenge in England, experience a performance at the Mariinsky Theatre in Petersburg, and be part of countless other experiences. 9

SARDINIA .....................

Secluded Seduction

As D. H. Lawrence so eloquently put it in his travel book, Sea and Sardinia, Sardinia is “different. It is different in so many wonderful ways, not only from Italy and the surrounding islands and mainland, but also from the world at the large. The coastal island, the second biggest in the Mediterranean, is a nation unto itself with its own unique history, traditions, cuisine, and culture. Visitors to the island leave with horizons expanded, expectations exceeded, and an unrelenting desire to return.

12

INTRAVELMAGAZINE.COM

Sardinia

ANCIENT BEGINNINGS

The island’s history stretches back thousands of years, with the remnants of some ancient settlements dating back to 3200 BC. The most significant and recognisable of the ruins on the island are those from the mysterious Nuragic civilization. Established during the Bronze Age, the civilization was indigenous to the island having developed from previous inhabitants. They were a people exclusive to the island, and never settled elsewhere in the Mediterranean. There are several theories which ponder the origin of the civilization – one of the oldest, if not the oldest in the Western Mediterranean – not least of which is Sergio Frau’s; in his 2002 book Le Colonne d’Ercole. Un’inchiesta (The Pillars of Hercules. An investigation), he posits that Sardinia was in the fact the mythical island of Atlantis! Regardless of the civilization’s origins, its remnants are as much a part of the island as very earth they’re found on. Nuraghi, the ancient structures from which the civilization was given its name, are found right across the expanse of the island; at almost any location on the island there is a nuraghi ruin – some in excellent condition – within 5km or less. Notable sites include the Su Nuraxi, Cabu Abbas Riu Mulinu, Losa, and the Villages of Serra Orrios and Tiscali. Equally impressive are the Nuragic Tombs of the Giants and Sacred Wells, some of which can be viewed at Su Monte es’ape and S’Ena e Thomes, and Sa Testa, Santa Cristina, and Su Tempiesu respectively.

DISTINCTIVE CULTURE

The Sardinian people are as unique as the island they call home. Generally more quiet and reserved compared to their Mediterranean neighbours, but every bit as friendly and polite, they have a deep connection to their homeland and inherent traditions and cultures. Thanks to healthy habits and a mostly laidback lifestyle, many Sardinians live incredibly long lives – some to over 100 years old! Perhaps this is also due to their healthy appetite for festivals and celebrations. No trip to Sardinia would be complete without experiencing one of its many incredible, eccentric festivals. The number and variety festivals draw crowds from far and wide and each one is a great opportunity to witness traditional dress and local craftwork, enjoy local music, and indulge in local produce at authentic Sardinian food stalls. Because of the region’s strong horse culture, there are many equestrian events including the adrenalin-fuelled L’Ardia in Sedilo in July, and February’s Sa Sartiglia Carnival in Oristano. Other annual festivals include Barbagia’s il Carnevale Barbaricino which sees the region’s inhabitants dress as wild characters with ferocious masks to drive away winter’s evil spirits; the Sagra di Sant Efisio which is the island’s most famed religious festival during which thousands of participants complete a 40km long pilgrimage; and Easter in Sardinia, known locally as Sa Pasca Manna, which is famed for its mystery processions and is also an unforgettable experience.

EXQUISITE CUISINE

The people of Sardinia love their food and wine, and the island’s long culinary history has produced some excellent dishes. Although the local cuisine is primarily Mediterranean in nature, there is no shortage of local flair. Visitors who prefer to stick to what they know can indulge in the many delicious pizza and pasta dishes available on its shores, but those who are willing and wanting to expand their culinary horizons will find no shortage of gastronomic adventure. A happy consequence of the Sardinian people’s long history on the island is their mastery of several crafts, not least of which is roasting meat, baking bread, and making cheese. With techniques thousands of years in the making, the results are exquisite. So much so, that Sardinia produces 80% of Italy’s pecorino romano cheese! As in mainland Italy, Agriturismo, are plentiful in Sardinia – many of them incredibly lavish – and are excellent place to sample some local dishes. These farm-based restaurants produce authentic local fare including a variety of meats, cheeses, breads, salamis and olives. Sardinian wines, although relatively unknown outside of the island, are as delicious and varied as can be found anywhere. Each region produces its own speciality, many pairing perfectly with the cuisine of the area. UNFORGETTABLE LANDSCAPES & WILDLIFE

Situated in the middle mesmerising turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia is an island of wonderfully diverse landscapes. The snow-white beaches and picturesque coves of the coast attract as many visitors as those who come to conquer its inland mountains. Covered in beautifully lush vegetation, the island is somewhat akin in a mini-continent. One of Sardinia’s most famous coastal stretches, the Costa Smeralda in the North, is littered with famous resorts and pristine beaches. At its heart sits Porto Cervo, a custom-built resort which effortlessly blends in the landscape and attracts thousands of luxury travellers each year. In stark contrast to its coastline, inland Sardinia is mountainous and rugged – but every bit as beautiful. The best known range is the Gennargentu in the east, which offers unrivalled views from its peaks – provided visitors are willing to make the gruelling climb.

An excellent way to visit and view the interior of Sardinia is aboard “Il Trenino Verde”, The Little Green Train. Its railway passes through some of the most beautiful, and often untouched Sardinian land as well as many of the island’s ancient monuments. Sardinia is also home to an amazing variety of wildlife and is renowned in particular for its bird-watching. Peregrine falcons, tufted cormorants, bearded and griffon vultures, pink flamingos and many other rare and exquisite species are counted amongst its offering. Occasionally, some visitors are also fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the very rare Sardinian Fox or the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Calling Sardinia picture-perfect would be fair, but also an injustice. The island offers so much more than just its inherent beauty, and it is truly a destination that every traveller should make an effort to experience.

Etihad takes Abu Dhabi hospitality to the world

Last year the carrier welcomed more than 14 million passengers, with the figure increasing annually for over a decade as Etihad adds an ever growing number of destinations to its global portfolio. The airline launched services to ten new destinations in eight countries last year – Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Rome, Zurich, Medina, Yerevan, Jaipur, Phuket and Perth – and increased capacity on 23 existing routes. The latest additions were however just the tip of the iceberg, with Etihad currently flying to more than 100 destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Etihad also has one of the most modern fleets in the skies, with 116 luxurious Airbus and Boeing aircraft in operation. At the same time, the airline is realising its ever expanding ambitions, with more than 200 aircraft on firm order, including 69 Boeing 787s, 25 Boeing 777-X, 62 Airbus A350s and eight Airbus A380s. The launch of the airline’s first Airbus A380 and first Boeing 787, along with its new cabin crew uniform, received an overwhelming response from the public, leading to a major increase in online brand awareness. On social media alone, the Etihad Airways brand garnered more than 150 million impressions throughout the world in a two-week period after the launch of the new planes. Most recently, Etihad added a touch of glamour to its operations, welcoming Nicole Kidman as global spokeswomen. Kidman is both star and narrator of a captivating feature, which was shown on global TV stations and social media in both 60 and 30 second formats, with still versions of the campaign appearing in print, digital and on outdoor channels. Judging by the enormous support the inaugural event received, it’s clear that not only were those demands met, but that the World Golf Awards can look forward to long run of success. Following the spectacular success of last year’s event at the exquisite Conrad Algarve in Algarve, Portugal, it seemed an obvious choice for the World Golf Rewards to return to the venue. The prestigious five-star hotel, the most modern in the region, will once again welcome golfing professionals and enthusiasts for the November ceremony. Attendees can look forward to a meticulously planned three-day itinerary which includes golfing on one of the three championship golf courses at Quinta do Lago – the South Course, Laranjal, and new North Course –, a networking event, the Second Annual World Golf Awards Classic competition, and of course the ceremony itself! 55

Voting for this year’s Awards began in March and will run to the end of September. Competition within the industry is fierce, with many of the world’s most prestigious golf resorts and courses vying for position. However, ultimately it is not up to them, it is up the voters. Votes have been cast by golf travel and tourism professionals as well as members of the public. To ensure impartiality, the voting runs on a first-pastthe-post system, which sees the candidate with the most votes take home the trophy. After national category winners have been decided, they will go head-to-head for arguably the most coveted awards, the World Winners. At this stage it is still anyone’s game and the anticipation is running high as heavyweights go head-to-head. Among the most sought-after titles is Asia’s Best Golf Destination, which Malaysia took home in 2014. This year it faces stiff competition from the likes of China, Indonesia, and Thailand. Other regions of the world host equally strong competition, and all eyes are on Portugal to see if it can retain its title of World’s Best Golf Destination. 56

Comparatively small, the Mediterranean attraction can be divided up into several tourist areas with the Algarve and Porto and Northern Portugal being among the most popular. THE ALGARVE

Characterised by stunning beaches, exquisite cuisine, an abundance of outdoor activities and award-winning golf courses, it’s not surprising that the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is a long-time tourist favourite.

Boasting 200km of pristine, unbroken coastline, the region is home to numerous nature reserves, picture-perfect villages, ancient castles and fortresses and much more. With its guarantee of 300 days of sunshine, visitors will delight in the Algarve seemingly inexhaustible selection of activities. Every year the Algarve broadens its offering, adding to its already exciting calendar of yearly and seasonal events including Nature Weeks and Wine and Food Pairings. Similarly, hotels, golf courses and other establishments continue to rake in awards and constantly strive to bring the very best to guests and visitors. PORTO AND NORTHERN PORTUGAL

On the opposite end of the country’s border lies the equally alluring Porto and Northern Portugal. The region is rich with culture and colourful history, and is home to no less than four UNESCO World Heritage sites. Porto, which gave its name to the country, is the ideal destination for a getaway of any length. Easily reached from almost anywhere in Europe, on a selection of affordable airlines, even a weekend in the city is well worth the trip. Travellers can look forward to extraordinary gastronomic delights paired with an unparalleled selection of excellent wines, rich history and tradition which is still very much alive throughout the region, culture like nowhere else, and natural wonders as far as the eye can see. 61

FOOTGOLFERS IN FINE FETTLE AT MISSION HILLS Mission Hills, the pioneer and innovator in China’s golf and leisure industry, has scored another notable first with the launch of the country’s inaugural footgolf tournament. Comprising five rounds, the Mission Hills Footgolf Championship will culminate with a Grand Final from which the champions will be presented with the opportunity to compete in the Footgolf World Cup 2016, to be held in Argentina. Registered in Hong Kong in March, the China Footgolf Federation was officially established by the Mission Hills Group. As Asia’s first Footgolf federation it is committed to promoting and developing footgolf in China and the region. A total of 48 two-man teams took part in today’s first round on the resort’s Pete Dye Course at Mission Hills Mid-Valley, Shenzhen. pastime for players and fans alike. As a new and exciting way, footgolf can introduce even more people to golf. “China has 26 million footballers and 200 million football spectators and fans, the most of any country in the world. So we are tapping into an entirely new audience with this venture. The fact that 90 per cent of the players today were non-golfers speaks for itself. “While we are continuing to grow golf, there is no doubt that the sport of footgolf is here to stay. We plan to have a permanent footgolf course at Mission Hills open soon to the public, which will provide the platform for players and fans to practice. Given the enthusiasm shown for today’s event, we are confident that it is only a matter of time before it takes off very quickly.” It was a case of football skills ruling the day at Mission Hills as a duo representing China carried off the winners’ trophy. Shen Rong and Chen Yujun, a junior golfer who regularly plays in tournaments at Mission Hills, combined for a winning score of six-under-par 66 on the 18-hole course.

“We are delighted with the success of the first round of the first footgolf tournament in China. We hope it will be just the start of a programme that will see us host a regular league,” said Mission Hills Group Vice Chairman Mr Tenniel Chu.

“It’s been tremendous fun and we’ve had a really enjoyable day,” said Rong. “This has been a great experience. We hope that a lot more football fans come to join us.”

Hotel Les Ottomans

HOTEL LES OTTOMANS Istanbul is the magical meeting place of East and West, the intersection of ancient and contemporary worlds, and where old and modern cultures fuse. In the heart of this world class city, on the banks of the iconic Bosphorus, sits a hotel that embodies all of these treats with luxurious flair. The Hotel Les Ottomans has a rich heritage which stretches back to the 18th century, when it was initially conceived as a mansion. Over 100 years after its inception the original proprietors left, following which it was used as a coal warehouse and then for sand storage before being bought by an entrepreneur in the 1980s who turned it into the magnificent destination it is today. Its renovation saw the exterior restored to its former glory, while the interior was re imagined with an allusion to its historic journey and in accordance to the Feng Shui philosophy. A wide selection of rooms are available to all guests, each uniquely decorated and draped in opulence. A harmonious combination of Ottoman tradition and modern luxury, the rooms offer guests supreme comfort and complete luxury, and all feature a large bathroom with a Jacuzzi and rain shower, remote controlled automation systems, complimentary spa access and much more. The Caudalie Vinothérapie® Spa is the perfect destination for patrons to indulge in the finer aspects of wellness. Using only the most natural formulas possible for its products, the spa’s treatments provide clientele with a wellness experience like no other. Its treatments include the famous Barrel Bath and the Crushed Cabernet Scrub, The Pulp Friction Sculpting Treatment, and an array of body treatments inspired by practices from around the world. 101
