Asia & Australasia THE WORLD, IN A NUTSHELL Making up a significant portion of the Eastern Hemisphere, Asia and Australasia are home to some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife, richest culture and history, most impressive economies, and a variety of exclusive destinations. Generally understood to include all countries east of Afghanistan and south of mainland Russia, the region is a world unto itself. Australasia’s incredible natural wonders and Asia’s captivating culture gives the area an allure that few others can match. This is in large part due to how the regions developed; much of Asia developed in parallel to the West, while Australasia was largely untouched by modern civilization until relatively recently. Compared to one another and within themselves, Asia and Australasia are worlds of contrasts. Bustling modern metropolises like Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong sit in stark contrast to ancient wonders like the Great Wall of China, the temples of Angkor, K2, the Chocolate Hills, and countless others. Similarly, and despite its age, Australasia offers its own plethora

of diverse attractions; the exquisite Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef, the impressive Sky Tower and Fiordland National Park, the captivating Pacific Islands and their intriguing culture. Within their boundaries lie some of the world’s strongest and fastest growing economies, making many of the countries and cities of Asia and Australasia premier business destinations. Excellent infrastructure attracts numerous global conferences and a variety of international corporations have operations and headquarters in the region. The hospitality industry of Asia and Australasia is second to none. Its world-class resorts and hotels are among the best to be found anywhere, and paired with its excellent, welldeveloped leisure industry, the region’s appeal as a luxury travel destination is undeniable. Between Asia and Australasia there is not much, if anything, that can’t be had. World-class in almost every sense, the question is not if to visit, but when?

The Unending Appeal of Hong Kong
A cacophony of horns and hooters, whistles and wails, gears and grunts, pours in from all sides; droves of pedestrians, taxis, buses, and bikes constantly stream from here to there and there to here; wafts of incense, searing meat, churning engines, and street smells permeate the air; this is the beautiful, organised chaos of Hong Kong. At any moment it seems as if everything could spin out of control and descend into pandemonium, but of course it never does and never will. Some intangible force (not to mention extraordinary infrastructure) keeps it running along smoothly without so much as a hitch.
Hanging off of the southern tip of the China, the cosmopolitan hub is a fusion of East and West, new and old, fast and slow. It where some of the world’s finest fashion, food, and design can found, but is also home to ancient traditions, and timeless monuments. It’s one of the most densely populated places on the planet, but handles the label with aplomb. An exercise in balance on the extreme scale, it is undeniably of the most alluring destinations in the world.

Where once arrival in Hong Kong entailed a nail-biting entry over colourful Kowloon leading up to Kai Tak airport, it is now a much more elegant affair taken care off at the world-class Hong Kong International Airport. The new airport is not without its own charms though, least of which are a Michelin-starred restaurant and a 9-hole golf course. Transport to the city, possible via numerous methods, is fast and efficient, and less than an hour after arrival travellers can be exploring Hong Kong’s many treasures. As one of Asia’s top food cities Hong Kong is a gastronomic delight. Around every corner a new culinary experience awaits; hunting down hidden local delicacies like pineapple buns or more renowned specialities like barbeque pork buns and roast meats is half the fun. But where to begin? From intriguing street foods and open air markets, to highly-rated Michelin-starred restaurants and exclusive dining experiences, Hong Kong’s food scene has no boundaries.

The Unending Appeal of Hong Kong
Despite the city’s busy, crowded nature, there are numerous pockets of tranquillity to be found within its limits. The Hong Kong Zoological & Botanical Gardens, located in the Central district on Hong Kong Island, were built in the Victorian Era and boast a wonderful collection of fountains, greenhouses, aviaries, greenhouses, and a zoo. In Kowloon, the meticulously kempt Yuen Po Street Bird Garden is home to dozens of stalls selling a variety of avian paraphernalia. Further afoot lies the Kowloon Walled City Park, the site of the former city of the same name. Beyond these pockets, many visitors are surprised to learn that over 40% of Hong Kong’s territory is country parks and national reserves. In addition to its numerous attractions, Hong Kong also offers some of the world’s best shopping. Everything from state-ofthe-art electronics and the latest fashions, to exclusive luxury items and designer homeware can be found in exotic locations around the city. Even without making any purchases, exploring Hong Kong’s open air markets, boutique stores, luxury outlets, and opulent malls is an incredible experience of itself. Hong Kong’s appeal is seemingly unending, and can be written about to exhaustion. The pages of dozens of books, magazines, and guides have been dedicated to its many attractions – and will continue to be forever more – but, as with all such places, the only way to truly do it justice is by experiencing it first-hand.

A New Look and the Return of an Icon at
CATHAY PACIFIC Ready to take on the new year with style and grace, Hong Kong’s home carrier has revealed striking new aircraft livery and reopened its iconic Pier First Class lounge following extensive renovations. Over a year ago work began on refreshing Cathay Pacific’s brand identity. One of the most noticeable changes was unveiled in early November when the aircraft revealed its new aircraft livery. 20
INTRAVELMAGAZINE.COM
Cathay Pacific
The new livery, which Cathay Pacific considers symbolic of its commitment to its home city and a visible interpretation of its promise to offer a “Life Well Travelled” to customers, comprises three key design elements; the updated and streamlined brushwing, a simplification of the colour palette to Cathay Pacific green, grey and white, and a more prominent display of the name and brushwing. “Creating a new livery is much more than a cosmetic exercise. This new look is the latest – and most significant – development in our ongoing efforts to improve the overall customer experience at Cathay Pacific. It is also a highly visible representation of the huge investments we are making in new aircraft and products as part of our ongoing commitment to build Hong Kong’s position as an international aviation hub.” – Ican Chu, Cathay Pacific Chief Executive
In a related development, the Pier First Class Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport finally reopened on 19 June after being closed for several months. The passenger favourite, located at Gate 63 in the North West concourse, underwent extensive renovations in line with Cathay Pacific’s new brand design ethos. The redesign of 2061 square metre lounge was led by Ilse Crawford of Studioilse, a London-based design studio, and evokes the atmosphere of a homely, contemporary apartment. Every aspect of the design reflects this intention, including the selection of materials, furniture, and lighting as well as art, music, and food. The result is a space in which passengers feel like visitors to a friend’s apartment. With seating for up to 231 guests, the lounge is divided into several individual sections; the Library, the Bureau with six iMac workstations, the Dining Room for sit-down á la carte, the Pantry for “grab and go” light bites, the horseshoe-shaped bar, and the Retreat area featuring 14 showers, eight Day Suites and three foot-massage booths. In addition to its impressive amenities the lounge is also the first Cathay Pacific lounge to feature the airline’s bespoke fragrance. 21

ASIA AND AUSTRALASIA’S LEADING SPAS As the world of luxury travel becomes increasingly competitive, it also becomes more and more difficult for hotels and resorts to distinguish themselves from their competitors. World-class service is ubiquitous and luxury is standard, leaving leading destinations with few other ways to impress and attract discerning travellers. That is, except for one: spas. Spas provide an opportunity for hotels and resorts to differentiate themselves by offering exclusive treatments, some unique to their establishment. Even so the field can be a challenging one to navigate, but the latest results of the World Travel Awards makes it considerably less so.

Following two previous, unsuccessful bids, losing out to Vancouver, Canada and Sochi, Russia in 2010 and 2014 respectively, PyeongChang persisted and bid again. Its commitment to host the Olympic Games paid off on 6 July 2011, when it was elected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The announcement was made at the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa, and saw PyeongChang beat candidates Annecy, France and Munich, Germany. It is only the third Asian city to host the Winter Games, following Sapporo, Japan in 1972, and Nagano, Japan in 1998.
Recently the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) broke ground on the site of the soon-to-be Olympic Village. It will be constructed on the 42 000 square meter Yongpyong Dome, located in the PyeongChang Mountain Cluster. Mission Hills Haikou
Earlier this year, Mission Hills Haikou added another feather to its cap when it was awarded as GEO Certified® for its sustainable environment management, becoming the largest single-site facility in the world to achieve the coveted status. One of the world’s largest golf resorts, Mission Hills Haikou has been exemplary in its commitment to sustainable tourism leadership, and this reward is only the latest in a string of recognition for its outstanding environmentally-sustainable efforts. GEO Certified® is golf ’s international mark of sustainability and is administered and assured by the notfor-profit Golf Environment Organization (GEO). The award recognises golf businesses that exhibit an ongoing commitment to deliver more value to both the people and nature at the facilities they manage. Located on Hainan Island, Mission Hills Haikou was established in 1992 and was a pioneer in developing golf in China. In more recent years it has come to be known as “Asia’s sport and lifestyle capital”. Set on a sprawling 15 000 acre estate, the resort was constructed on permeable lava rock and strict management and monitoring systems ensure the conservation of groundwater. It features ten diverse golf courses which cater to all levels of playing ability, each of which was designed to work with the natural surroundings. During its development over 20 000 mature trees were preserved, and the ongoing replanting of 50 000 trees across its grounds further bolsters restoration initiatives. Mission Hill Haikou is equally committed to providing attractive opportunities for local people. It is a leader in China in fair wages and benefits, which include social insurance, a housing fund, and a health system development. Furthermore, it also offers professional development opportunities and training. Last year the resort hosted China’s first major carbon neutral sporting event, 2014 World Celebrity Pro-Am, and complemented the effort by donating proceeds from the tournament to the World Wildlife Fund. 61

Consistently ranked among Asia and the world’s top shopping destinations, and often considered the best shopping destination in Southeast Asia, Kuala Lumpur is a shopper’s dream. This status was the result of years of planning and development, much of it under the guidance of the Shopping Malaysia Secretariat. Formed in 2002, as a subsidiary of Tourism Malaysia, it has helped Kuala Lumpur achieve impressive feats including being ranked as the 4th Best Shopping City in the World by CNN Travel for two consecutive years (2012-2013).
The Captivating Contrasts of Malaysia
With over 350 shopping malls, three of which are among the world’s 10 largest, offering over 100 million square feet of net lettable area, there is no shortage of variety. From its many duty-free havens to upmarket establishments like Johor Premium Outlet and Mitsui Outlet Park, no shopping need cannot be met. In addition to its generous offerings, the country’s National Shopping Campaigns greatly boost tourist arrivals. Key campaigns include: • 1Malaysia GP Sale (March - April): To catch the Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix fever by creating a shopping frenzy during the international racing season. • 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival ( June - September): To serve as the ‘Mother of All Sales’ with mid-year mega deals and mega bargains. • 1Malaysia Year-End Sale (November - January): To target year-end festive revellers and holiday makers, who are all set to unwind at the end of the year.
Travellers who prefer the open road over a crowded aisle will also not be disappointed. A prime example is picturesque state of Terengganu, situated on the north-east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. With a documented history stretching back over 2000 years, it has rich heritage and fascinating history. Undoubtedly one of the best ways to explore it is via Federal Route 3, an almost 100 year old highway. Along its 739km long course it crosses four states, weaving through some of the most stunning scenery in all of Asia. Stops along the way provide the perfect setting to indulge in Malaysian culture and embrace the charming countryside. From its opulent malls to its scenic roads, Malaysia is a country of wonderful contrasts and fascinating diversity.
