From gourmet restaurants on the high street of Lima, to street vendors in one-horse towns, and home-cooked meals in the confines of a local’s home, each dish tells a story and adds to Peru’s wonderful appeal. ECUADOR 2016
South America's Leading Green Destination 2016
Ecuador might be relatively small, but it is far from insignificant. Often referred to as the “country of four worlds”, the South American nation is one of the most diverse in the world and was awarded the region’s Leading Green Destination for the third consecutive year – it has also been voted the World’s Leading Destination every year since 2013, with this year’s winner still be decided. Ecuador’s four worlds comprise the Coast, the Andes, the Amazon and the Galapagos. Between those live thousands of exotic and endemic flora species, including close to 18 000 plants and flowers, over 1600 species of birds, 350 species of reptiles and 400 species of amphibians. Many of these species thrive thanks to the country’s numerous protected areas which preserve the natural treasures under force of law.

Ecuador
Each of the “four worlds” has its own fauna and flora, but the Galapagos is arguably the most widely-recognised for its extraordinary biodiversity. Enormous tortoises, the world’s only sea-going lizard, cuddly-looking sea lions and more all share the renowned volcanic archipelago. Similarly, the Amazon is home to vast number of different species, most of which have specifically adapted to the unique environment. Even without the abundance of marine- and wildlife, it is an incredibly picturesque destination. Beautiful mountain villages and defunct mining towns can be found at higher altitudes, while down at sea-level stunning beaches wait to be explored. Beautifully complementing Ecuador’s many natural wonders are its intricate, exquisite cities. Historic centres like Quito and Cuenca hold delights around every corner; ancient places of worship, extravagant mansions, and many other architectural gems, all connected by wonderfully winding cobblestone streets. www.ecuador.travel

At the recent Latin America World Travel Awards it was voted South America's Leading Luxury Train 2016, making it its third consecutive year taking home the honours. Tren Crucero operates two routes – northbound and southbound - between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, running two locomotive varieties: modern, electric-diesel engines; and beautifully restored, antique steam engines. They pull a convoy of two luxury Colonial and Republican-style themed passenger cars which have been restricted to 50 passengers to ensure an exclusive experience for all guests. A third car is home to bar and gift-shop, as well as two observation lounges and an open air terrace.

Whether travelling south on the Train of Wonders or north on the Train to the Clouds, it’s a four-day, three-night journey. The former sets off from Quito and initially heads up into the northern Andes, straight into the valley of Otavalo, an area rich with culture and tradition, where amazing handicrafts can be found and export-class rose plantations can be explored. It then doubles back and sets off for the coast from Quito. Along the way it climbs the Chimborazo volcano moorlands, zig-zags across the “Devil’s Nose” pass, and rides along the Chanchan river canyon before crossing a cloud forest and tropical plantations en route to the final destination, Guayaquil. The Train to the Clouds follows the same route, only in reverse, climbing 3600 metres in little more than 450km.

Much of the lodge’s construction was done off-site in Quito, where pre-assembled steel walls were put together and later transported to the site. LED lights reduce energy consumption while yellow

“There’s an old adage in our business, ‘no matter where you go, the first and last impression that you'll have of any country, or any city, is the airport.’ ” - Andrew O'Brian CEO, Quiport Mariscal Sucre International Airport. It’s a fact that often goes unsaid, but that doesn’t make it any less relevant. More often than not, airports determine travellers’ perspectives of any given destination, which is why Mariscal Sucre International Airport is the perfect welcoming point for visitors to Ecuador. Set on the Caraburo plateau, the airport is just 20.5 aerial kilometres from the centre of Quito and has greatly increased the flow of travellers in and out of the city. As the city’s and the country’s economies have grown, so too have the airport’s services and innovation. Just earlier this month, the airport opened the Hotel Wyndham Quito Airport, the first establishment of its kind at the airport and a much needed one at that. Through increasing connectivity for both domestic and international travellers, improving services on all levels, and operating with incredibly high security standards, the airport has earned the respect and admiration of passengers and the industry at large. Over its young life, it was only opened in 2013, Mariscal Sucre International Airport has been awarded South America’s Leading Airport every year since 2014 – and the only reason it did not take home the award in its inaugural year was because the category did not yet exist! 43

Its eclectic architecture, which at the time of its construction broke from tradition and offered something different, is as notable as its unique location in the main plaza of the historic centre of Quito – which affords it stunning views of the government palace, the Cathedral, ancient domes of old churches, the Panecillo and the Town Hall. At some later stage, the owners decided to establish Quito’s first luxury hotel, and so Hotel Plaza Grande was born. Voted South America's Leading Boutique Hotel 2016, Hotel Plaza Grande has 15 suites each finely furnished with intricately patterned wood reminiscent of the style of the Spanish colonial era. A beautiful fusion of vintage tastes with contemporary luxuries, all suites offer a true five-star experience. Large windows overlook the charming city of Quito, offering guests a unique vantage point. In addition to all the standard features of a five-star suite, the Presidential Suite also boasts a lounge with a balcony, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a further two balconies adjacent to the master bedroom. Guests at the hotel have the privilege of dining at either of its wonderful restaurants. Belle Epoque combines spectacular views and a one-of-kind atmosphere with incomparable food and an impressive Opera show. The slightly smaller Café Plaza Grande will take diners on a culinary journey, exploring all the traditional delights of the city and the country’s unique flavours. Two events venues are also available at the hotel. The San Francisco Hall is the larger of the two, with a capacity for up to 200 guests standing or 110 seated at circular tables. Cava El Claustro boasts some of the best crops to be found anywhere and offers fine wines and drinks paired with creative dining options and superb live music. www.plazagrandequito.com

CARTAGENA DE INDIAS Set in Columbia’s picturesque northern coast, where the Caribbean Sea laps stunning beaches, Cartagena de Indias is in many ways the gateway to South America. Founded in 1533 by Spanish conqueror Pedro de Heredia, the city has been shaped and complemented by the unique Caribbean landscape and its fairytale-like architecture, which features traits from multiple time periods, makes it seem as if it was plucked from the pages of Treasure Island. At the heart of the city is the old, colonial walled city which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and has the most extensive fortifications in South America. Its walls have seen galleons and pirates, carriages and queens, motorcades and presidents, and every year its cobbled alleys welcome thousands upon thousands of new visitors. Surrounding the 13 kilometres of ancient walls lies the outer town. Bustling with constant activity, it is home to numerous prestigious restaurants, a variety of superb hotels, and an excellent entertainment scene, and visitors are guaranteed a good time no matter where in the city they find themselves. In 1991 the greater city was also declared Tourist, Historical and Cultural District in Columbia.

South America's Leading Hotel Brand 2016
Marriott Hotels Few people know that Marriott Hotels actually began as a humble root beer stand in 1927 opened by young newlyweds J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott, and their business partner Hugh Colton. In the years that followed the business and the brand grew exponentially and 1959 the first Marriott Hotel was opened in the United States, followed by its first international hotel in Acapulco, Mexico a decade later. Today, Marriott International, Inc owns close to 4500 properties across 87 countries and territories, and is still family run as it always has been. Over the years, Marriott has constantly been pushing innovation, seeking inventive ways to better serve customers and provide better opportunities for its associates. It attributes much of its success to its five core values: put people first, pursue excellence, embrace change, act with integrity, and serve our world.
When Marriott talks about putting people first, it’s as much about customers as it is about its own staff and associates. The founder’s philosophy, “take care of associates and they will take care of the customers," still rings true today and has formed the backbone of the brand’s incredible service offering.
