The latter takes inspiration from the Peking Opera, a complicated Chinese stage art that combines performances, acrobatics, gongs, drums, facial paintings, music and more to dazzling effect.

Although some are quick to equate Vietnam with the war that ravaged it for two decades, the country is so much more than that, and the strides it has made in the wake of the historic conflict are extraordinary.

Instead of falling apart or disintegrating, Vietnam pulled together as a nation and rebuilt itself. Of course the war will never be forgotten, and its scars will forever be visible, but it is only a single chapter in the countless volumes that comprise the story of a spectacular destination.

As beautiful as it is mysterious, Vietnam is an undeniably compelling and is impossible not to fall in love with. Preparations are well underway for the highly-anticipated Grand Final Gala Ceremony of the World Travel Awards. As always, a fundamental aspect of the event is the host venue, and this year the organisation’s outdone itself.

The prestigious host of the 2017 event is the recently opened JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, Vietnam.

The JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay officially opened its doors in December, 2016, but the property’s history dates back considerably further. In 1880, before JW Marriot was even conceived, the fictional Lamarck University was established in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. Named for its founder, famed naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, the university operated until 1940.

With the onset of war, interest waned and sadly the property fell into a state of disrepair.

However, over half a century later, the Sun Group saw the potential in the site and brought in renowned hotel designer and architect Bill Bensley.

Thanks to its founder, the university’s buildings and structures all had an underlying connection to nature and its many rhythms, and Bensley was quick to see this. Each building had a unique story, and he sought to preserve this in his redesign. From the smaller, quaint buildings that line the main street, to the larger structures on the periphery, Bensley’s whimsical touches can been seen throughout the resort.

His designs modernised the property without removing its soul, and result is something quite spectacular, a resort that he himself called “the best big hotel” he’s ever designed.

The new addition to the Southeast Asia is the first luxury hotel on the island of Phu Quoc and offers guest a choice of 250 rooms, suites, apartments, and villas – with a 54 square-meter minimum. Based on a fictional university, Bensley created an entire world unto itself.

Each building is modelled after an academic department, and careful attention has been paid to ensure that every last detail is convincing and authentic. Not only that, but each and every space is utterly unique, no mean feat considering the size and complexity of the property. But, where others see obstacles, Bensley sees only opportunities and at worst challenges.
