Africa

INCOMPARABLE,

UNFORGETTABLE

There is something unique, something special about Africa which gives it an allure like few other places. Perhaps it is the knowledge that it is the ancestral home of all of humanity, which beckons travellers from every corner of the world to its shores. Perhaps it is its vast expanse - it is afterall the second biggest continent - which is home to an abundance of natural wonders, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else on earth. Perhaps it is the pursuit of adventure, which seems to lurk around every corner, that summons thrill-seekers, adrenaline junkies, and contemporary explorers to discover its mysteries. Whatever “it” is, it makes Africa an incomparable and unforgettable destination. Divided by the compass into four regions, which comprise 54 incredibly diverse countries, Africa offers something unique at every turn. The North brings together the distinct cultures of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and of course Africa. Characterised by its desert expanses, bustling markets and thriving ancient cities, it’s a rare combination of many interwoven worlds and a delight for travellers.

Africa

To the west lies a variety of everchanging landscapes, from beaches and jungles to deserts and rainforests. In these lands many ancient tribes live on, having found a balance between traditional and modern life. The West offers a glimpse of a time and place almost forgotten, yet still prospering wildly. Known for its safaris and savannas, the East is home to a plethora of fascinating wildlife and also some of the most picturesque beaches in the world. That’s not to mention that Kilimanjaro, and some of the oldest known human remains, are found within its boundaries.

Last, but most certainly not least, is the South. It offers something for everyone at almost any time, with much of the region enjoying an almost year round favourable climate. Wildlife parks and nature reserves abound as do myriad gastronomical delights. Africa is one of very few destinations that can be visited multiple, if not innumerable times and each visit will be utterly unique, and that alone makes it a must-see for anyone who has the means.

ETIHAD TAKES ABU DHABI HOSPITALITY TO THE WORLD Etihad Airways – which began operations in 2003 – has continued to soar in recent months, fully growing into its role as the standard bearer of the United Arab Emirates.

Etihad takes Abu Dhabi hospitality to the world

Last year the carrier welcomed more than 14 million passengers, with the figure increasing annually for over a decade as Etihad adds an ever growing number of destinations to its global portfolio. The airline launched services to ten new destinations in eight countries last year – Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Rome, Zurich, Medina, Yerevan, Jaipur, Phuket and Perth – and increased capacity on 23 existing routes. The latest additions were however just the tip of the iceberg, with Etihad currently flying to more than 100 destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Etihad also has one of the most modern fleets in the skies, with 116 luxurious Airbus and Boeing aircraft in operation. At the same time, the airline is realising its ever expanding ambitions, with more than 200 aircraft on firm order, including 69 Boeing 787s, 25 Boeing 777-X, 62 Airbus A350s and eight Airbus A380s. The launch of the airline’s first Airbus A380 and first Boeing 787, along with its new cabin crew uniform, received an overwhelming response from the public, leading to a major increase in online brand awareness. On social media alone, the Etihad Airways brand garnered more than 150 million impressions throughout the world in a two-week period after the launch of the new planes. Most recently, Etihad added a touch of glamour to its operations, welcoming Nicole Kidman as global spokeswomen. Kidman is both star and narrator of a captivating feature, which was shown on global TV stations and social media in both 60 and 30 second formats, with still versions of the campaign appearing in print, digital and on outdoor channels. The ad was shot on-board Etihad Airways’ new flagship Airbus A380 – home to The Residence by Etihad – and in locations around the world, including various landmarks in Abu Dhabi.

NORTH AFRICA THE LAND OF MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS

Although Northern Africa only comprises seven countries, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Tunisia, it is a region of many worlds. Each country is its own unique mix of ancient tradition, modern customs, and inherent beauty. Over the last decade or so, Morocco has become a leading tourist destination in the region and with good reason. Situated as it is on the north-west tip of the continent, its proximity to European capitals and incredibly diverse local landscape makes it an ideal escape for any amount of time. Of course it’s not only Morocco that holds appeal, many of the countries share the magnificent Atlas Mountains between their borders, not to mention the Sahara desert which stretches across them all. Egypt and its ancient history tracing back to the pharoahs, and even earlier, will always be a fascinating attraction, as will Algeria – Africa’s largest country – which is still relatively unexploited as far as tourism is concerned. Wherever you might end up in Northern Africa, you can be assured it will be a riveting journey that you’ll not soon forget. 11

China’s Leading Sport & Lifestyle Resort SCORES IMPRESSIVE ONE-TWO VICTORY

China’s Mission Hill Haikou, the country’s capital sport and leisure resort, recently took home two impressive – albeit quite different – wins. In the first, Mission Hill was recognised for its continued sustainability efforts. Committed to protecting the fragile environment and carefully managing natural resources, it achieved the international sustainability award, GEO Certified®. The splendid resort, boasting ten diverse courses, is the largest single-site facility in the world to do so. The notable award is 28

INTRAVELMAGAZINE.COM

independently assessed and administered by the not-for-profit Golf Environment Organization (GEO). This recognition was only the latest in a string of triumphs including last year’s first ever carbon neutral sporting event in China, the 2014 World Celebrity Pro-Am, the proceeds of which went

// China’s Leading Sport & Lifestyle Resort

to the World Wildlife Foundation. The previous year it was designate a Global Low-Carbon Ecological Scenic Spot by the Global Forum on Human Settlements. The resort’s sustainability efforts are integrated throughout the facility; golf carts are solar powered, the clubhouse’s hot water is generated by efficient air-source pump and heat recovery system, irrigation water is 100% self-sufficient, the list goes on. On a somewhat different tack, but no less impressive, earlier this year Mission Hills Haikou launched China’s first inaugural footgolf tournament, Mission Hills Footgolf Championship. The sport, in case you are new to it, follows the same set of basic rules and concepts of golf but foregoes the traditional clubs and balls for skilled feet and footballs. The championship kicked off in June in at Pete Dye Course at Mission Hills Mid-Valley, Shenzhen. 48 two-man teams competed for the trophy in an entertaining day of good-hearted sportsmanship. This was only the first of the tournament’s five rounds, all leading to the Grand Final from the champions will be given the opporunity to compete in the Footgolf World Cup 2016, to be held in Argentina.

EAST AFRICA

EAST AFRICA A CHILDHOOD DREAM, AN ADULT REALITY

When most people think of Africa it’s the image of East Africa that first comes to mind, even if they don’t realise it. It’s untamed Africa, where the beasts of the plains run freely across the Serengeti, where tall African men in traditional dress – the Masai Mara – seemingly bounce meters off the ground with the lightest jump, and where the sun always sets behind an acacia tree, perfectly silhouetting its shape. Amazingly, none of these imagined scenes are too far from reality. Each year millions of wildebeest, zebras, and antelope gather on the Serengeti plains of Tanzania to begin the long, treacherous trek north to Kenya in search of water and sustenance. The spectacle literally causes the earth to shake and instantly creates everlasting memories for those privileged enough to witness it. Much of the fascination with the migration comes from the drama created when predators enter the playing field. All throughout the trek lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs stalk the massive herd of animals, but it is the river crossings, where crocodiles lie in wait, that often generate the most interest. The region is also responsible for another vivid image, that of azure waters, perfectly white sandy beaches, and teeming marine life. This of course is where east coast meets the warm Indian Ocean, which has become an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional “paradise island” getaways so often overrun with travellers. This year it also happens to be the chosen destination of the WTA 2016 Africa & Indian Ocean event. East Africa is the Africa that many dreamed of as children, and still dream of today. It’s come a long way since travellers first set foot on it shores, but it still retains every shred of its renowned, ancient charm.

Surrounded on all sides by the stunning Indian Ocean, it would be difficult not to end up on a pristine beach when on Zanzibar, but the main tourist jaunts are Nungwi and Kendwa, in the north and north-west respectively. Nungwi village is the slightly more traditional of the two, and is widely known for its dhow building industry. There is always something a-go at the bustling coastal retreat, and visitors will not have to look far for entertainment. Dhows depart regularly from various points on the coast, carrying snorkelers and divers to prime diving spots where vibrant marine life can be observed with ease. In the evenings the beaches come alive with music, dancing, and merriment, much of it emanating from the numerous beach bars. For those looking to take things up a notch, Kendwa is calling. Over the last few years the north-western coastal strip has become the home of the travelling partygoer, hosting many late night events to indulge in. THE EAST COAST

For a something a little more removed from the beaten track, head a bit further south. The east coast is home to several breathtaking beaches, not yet as popular with tourists as the north is. Matemwe, Paje, and Kiwengwa are but a few of the wonderful destinations on this coast, which can sometimes be slightly more windy but is every bit as beautiful as any other part of the island.

34

Zanzibar

Slightly more inland and just into the southern half of the island is Jozani Forest, part of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park – the island nation’s only national park. Within its boundaries reside a host of weird and wonderful creatures, chief among the red colubus monkey, an endangered species which is fiercely guarded. The fascinating mangrove forests in the region also produce endless series of oohs and ahs from visitors, and are not to be missed. OTHER ISLETS

All sides of the main island are dotted with smaller islets, each with its own appeal. Just off the north-east coast is Mnemba island, a picturesque destination which is privately owned and can be hired in its entirety. Its surrounding waters are renowned for spectacular diving and snorkelling. To the north east of the main island lies Pemba island, still largely unexploited and almost unsurpassed in its superb diving spots. Chumbe island to the south is a marine sanctuary and haven to countless marine species and several rare birds. WHEN TO VISIT

The best time to visit Zanzibar changes based on personal preferences, but it’s usually a safe bet to avoid the rainy season which usually runs March through May. Other than that, guests can consult local travel and tourism agencies to work out when would best suit their specific needs.

An African Showcase

Kenya

When it comes to abundant wildlife, scenic natural beauty, and authentic African culture and heritage, Kenya is second to none. Situated on the beautiful east coast of Africa, where the Indian Ocean’s warm waters kiss the shore, it is here where much of Africa’s allure originates. One of the continent’s premier destinations, Kenya is home to some of the world’s most beautiful wildlife and no less than six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is this amazing diversity that draws an ever-increasing number of visitors each year. Travellers could go on safari every day for a week and not have the same experience twice. Of course Kenya can scarce be mentioned without bringing to mind one of the greatest natural spectacles to be seen anywhere: the great migration. The spectacular sight of over one million animals stampeding simultaneously is an experience that cannot be done justice by mere words and must be experienced to truly be appreciated. And then there are its beaches, some of the best on the continent if not in the world. Beautiful stretches of white sand flanked by rows of palm trees on one side and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean on the other, it’s merely a matter of wading into the water with a snorkel before encountering a flurry of marine life. As is the case with so many destinations, it is it’s people that endear to so many. The Maasai, the Samburu, the Turkana, Swahili, and the Kikuyu are the people that populate the ancient land and have done so for centuries. With them resides the nation’s true culture and heritage, and it is through them that visitors can get a true taste of Africa. Images by Angela Scott 49

Kenya Airways

For almost 40 years Kenya Airways has been among the top airlines in Africa, and with scrupulous investments in their fleet and a continued dedication to unfaltering service they have only climbed in ranking and reputation. Established in 1977, strategically partnering with Dutch airline KLM in 1994, and eventually being listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in 1996, it was clear from the start that the authentically African airline was there to stay. Today, they are not only Africa’s youngest fleet, boasting the B787-8 Dreamliner, B777-300ER and the New Generation B737-800 amongst other aircraft, and a member of Sky Alliance, but also one of the largest destination carriers on the continent. This year they also became the first and only airline to offer direct flights from Hanoi, Vietnam to Africa, this they add to their already impressive list of international destinations. Kenya Airlines is committed to making every traveller’s journey as pleasant and memorable as their destination, and the airline’s business class, Premier World, together with its unsurpassed in-flight service are a testament to this promise. Premier World passengers are treated to exquisitely prepared meals paired with leading wines from France and South Africa, all of which they can enjoy from comfortable, spacious seats while indulging in the vast selection of in-flight entertainment options. On the ground too, the airline has been making changes, last year unveiling the updated, upgraded Terminal 1A at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, their exclusive hub. The terminal has enough seating for almost 2000 passengers and boasts over ten boarding gates, ensuring that even the boarding experience is a pleasant one. They also two new opened two marvellous new lounges, the Pride and Simba lounges. There are some rare exceptions to the general rule that “bigger is better”, and even those are often overturned (just think of the current state of the mobile phone market), but one industry in which it is irrefutable is aviation. As Africa’s largest airline (ranked by IATA), Ethiopian Airlines therefore has a distinct advantage over its competitors and is the obvious choice for savvy travellers. Featured in more than one publication as a top destination for 2015 – not only in Africa, but the world – there has never been a better time to visit Ethiopia, and it has never been easier than with Ethiopian Airlines. Serving over 83 destinations, spread across five continents, with a impeccable fleet of modern aircraft, Ethiopian Airlines has been leading the African aviation industry since its inception – and continues to do so to this day. Recently, it proudly announced another victory: it became the first, and only airline on the continent to offer direct flights to Dublin and Los Angeles from Addis Ababa. This new development is not only great news for business and leisure travellers, but also reflects the airline’s commitment to facilitating travel to and from Ethiopia and thereby generating further appeal. Always striving to offer its passengers the best possible travel experience, Ethiopian Airlines established Ethiopian Holidays. As the name suggests, it is a service dedicated to facilitating seamless, hassle-free travel for passengers to the country. AN UNEXPECTED TREASURE TROVE West Africa is as diverse and wonderful as Africa itself, it’s filled with breathtaking landscapes, wonderful beaches, mesmerising jungles, and vast deserts. Although not necessarily renowned for its wildlife, travellers are often pleasantly surprised by its unique offerings – after all, there are not many other places where hippos play in the surf and elephants stroll down the beaches. A mix of ancient and modern life, West Africa is a region that all travellers need to visit at least once. Although comprising almost 20 unique countries, there is a certain cultural vein that penetrates the entire region and some similarities can be seen in the cuisine, dress, and music. It is also these cultural traits which leave many visitors with some of their most vivid memories. After all, there are not many who can resist the rhythmic beat of a tribal drum. Unlike other regions in Africa, travellers to the West may have to work a bit harder than usual to be rewarded, but often that reward is so much sweeter. Within the region roam majestic elephants and primates as well as many big cats which lurk in the long grasses. There is also an abundance of amazing, exotic bird life – if visitors know where to look – as well as the native, and sometimes reclusive, pygmy hippo. One of the region’s greatest strengths is in fact that it is often overlooked, meaning when lucky travellers land on something unique it will be theirs to enjoy alone.

Southern Africa has a charm and diversity unlike anywhere else in the world. Within this region resides some of the most beautiful wildlife to be seen anywhere, one of the world’s biggest deserts as well as one of its biggest waterfalls, unimaginably beautiful landscapes, but also beautiful, modern, cosmopolitan cities, thriving industries, and some of the most luxurious resorts to be found anywhere. Comprising South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, Malawi, and Zambia the region is an unending source of wonder and beauty. For many travellers, South Africa is the gateway to the entire region. Within shores it has incredible diversity: the warm waters of the east coast, the scenic Drakensberg mountains, penguins waddling in the south, the tranquil Garden Route and much, much more. South Africa is also the home of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino, so named years ago by hunters who deemed them the most difficult animals to hunt and kill. These days the hunting is less frequent and many more travellers flock to the country to catch a glimpse of these magnificent beasts in the wild. To the north west lies Namibia and its endless dunes, some of the biggest in the world, and the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon, second only the USA’s Grand Canyon in size. On the opposite coast Mozambique entices travellers with it’s exotic beaches and island-like atmosphere. Zimbabwe and Zambia share the breathtaking Victoria Falls. These are just a fraction of what the region has to offer. With such an abundance of extraordinary sites and attractions it may seem overwhelming at times, and surely it can, which is why Southern Africa sees so many return visitors. Giltedge Travel

Of the countless number travellers setting off into the world to explore lands, countries, and continents unknown to them, an ever-increasing number is headed to Africa and many of them have started asking a question: “how can they make a difference in these new lands”. Giltedge Travel recognised this new need and found it aligned surprisingly well with their commitment to responsible tourism, and after some time they had a solution: a brand new initiative aptly named “Travel With a Purpose”. As the name suggests, Travel With a Purpose is about more than just experiencing a new destination. It gives travellers the opportunity to make a real difference and give back while travelling in Southern Africa. Through the initiative, participants will create everlasting memories of the kind that cannot be captured on any type of film, and build meaningful, lasting friendship. What’s more, they will be of service to local communities and have a positive impact on the environment. Travel With a Purpose offers three different experiences, Volun-tourism, Eco-tourism, Edu-tourism. Volun-tourism revolves around social engagement and those

who select it will interact with many members of local communities, including vulnerable children and caretakers. A typical program may include: a visit to an orphanage, school, care-home or youth project in the townships; engaging with children during their school holidays; cross-cultural exchanges; or simply the donation of much need materials such as school and art supplies, clothing and sports equipment. Eco-tourism is concerned with conservation efforts, giving travellers the opportunity to take part in conservation and wildlife projects in Southern Africa, balancing culture with wildlife preservation. Programs may feature exploration efforts, hands-on participation in animal care, assisting with the rehabilitation of animals, and educating young Africans on the importance of conservation. Lastly, Edu-tourism refers to cross-cultural exchange. Travellers will share work and life experiences, skills and talents with other individuals and organisations who have similar interests. Through these and other practices they will promote mutual understanding and respect, and build lasting, global friendships. Programs range from anywhere from a day, to a week, to several weeks.
