Each year, WTA covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to recognise and celebrate individual and collective success within each key geographical region. This year’s Europe gala ceremony is taking place on Saturday 30 June in Athens.Oen referred to as the cradle of Western civilisation, Greece’s charismatic capital is Europe’s oldest city and dates back 2,500 years. Since 2004, the Archaeological Promenade, a 2.5-mile long, pedestrian-only walkway skirts the foot of the Acropolis and links all the city’s major archaeological sites. This huge archaeological park has reconciled past and present, with the city’s cultural and social life once again taking place around the ancient monuments and surrounding neighbourhoods. But visitors don’t travel to Athens just for the ancient monuments. Contemporary Athens boasts one of the most thriving nightlife in Europe, from the urban-chic bars around Monastiraki (at the foot of the Acropolis), to lounge-bars and fusion-food eateries of up-market Kolonaki. WTA’s red carpet event will be co-hosted by Maria Nikoltsiou and Petros Kousoulos. A journalist, anchor and radio
producer, Maria has hosted numerous news bulletins and TV programmes, including presenting the midday news bulletin for AlphaTV for the past 10 years. Petros, one of Greece’s brightest up-and-coming broadcasters, is currently a TV presenter on the weekend show at Epsilontv, the CEO of a leading news website and the publisher of a weekly Greek newspaper. Entertainment will be provided by Rena Morfi, one of Greece’s most popular singers. Rena made her singing debut with Fivos Delivorias and has collaborated with Panagiotis Kalantzopoulos in concerts and in the studio, as well as contributing vocals to various Disney and Mael movies. Rena Morfi will be joined by DuoViolins, the result of a collaboration between two critically-acclaimed musicians: Dimitris Isaris, the founding member of the hit-making pop group Other-View, and George Gaitanos, a renowned violinist and composer who has collaborated with the likes of Vanessa Mae, Scorpions, Sakis Rouvas and Anna Vissi. Fire show, Phantom Utopia, will complete the dazzling lineup of entertainment. Situated to the east of Athens, the Sporades Islands consists of four lush green, enchanting islands: step forward Skiathos, Skopelos, Skyros and Alonissos. The Sporades – so-called because they lie scaered ("sporadically", as it were) off the east coast of mainland Greece are among the most wooded of Greece's islands, with dense green pine forests dropping away to turquoise seas and secluded coves. If you've seen the film Mamma Mia, which was filmed largely on Skopelos, you'll know what we're talking about.
Skiathos, the best known of the Sporades islands and the birthplace of Alexandros Papadiamantis, boasts one of Greece’s most beautiful beaches in Koukounaries. Elsewhere on Skopelos, admire the unique architecture of its capital town (Hora) while Alonisso is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal, one of the biggest seal species. The fourth island, Skyros, isn’t the easiest to reach (there’s no direct ferry link from neighbouring islands) but the pay off is pure heaven: Skyros, famed for its diminutive Skyrian ponies, is an island of immense natural beauty and charm.

cyclades, aegean islands, souTh aegean region The most famous island group in the Aegean Sea comprises some of the most beautiful islands in the world. Gorgeous sandy beaches, architecture in white and blue, traditional lifestyle, folk music, warm, hospitable people and barren landscapes with isolated chapels, turn a trip to the Cyclades into a lifetime experience. The name ‘Cyclades’ refers to the islands forming a circle (the name in English means ‘circular islands’) around the sacred island of Delos. ionian islands, ionian region Scaered along the western coastline of Central Greece, the Ionian Islands as they are known, are an island cluster comprising 12 small and large islands whose total surface area comes to 2,200 sqkm. Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu (Kerkyra), Kefalonia, Leada, and Paxi are the six, large Ionian Islands. Antipaxi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, Meganisi and the deserted islets of Strofades south of Zakynthos are the smaller Ionian Islands. Once upon a time, the Ionian Islands were part of Central Greece but were torn apart when the terrain sank due to the seismic activity along the great coastline fault of the Ionian Sea. This accounts not only for the ragged shores and hauntingly beautiful beaches
but also accounts for the islands’ tall mountains, once part of the Pindos mountain range which crosses Central Greece. It also explains the great depth of the waters in the area which, at 4,406,, is the greatest in the Mediterranean. Whichever island you visit, expect a temperate climate, deep and cool sea waters, mountains, lush vegetation and cheerful locals who will greet you with a welcome as warm as the weather.

Aigina, Agkistri, Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Salamina and the peninsula of Methana form the island complex of the Argosaronic Gulf in southern Greece. tinos islAnd, cyclAdes Enchanting yet still unknown to the majority of tourists, this Cycladic island mostly aracts Greek pilgrims travelling there twice a year, on 25 March and 15 August, to visit the church of Panagia Megalochari (the Blessed Virgin Mary). People come from all over the country to fulfil their vows and to seek comfort.
But a pilgrimage is not the only reason to travel to Tinos. The oen overlooked island is home to beautiful beaches and traditional villages and celebrated for its marble-carving tradition. According to the legend, the famous sculptor of the ancient times, Fidias, taught the secrets of his art to the locals. cafe culture Despite being home to blockbuster sights such as the aforementioned Acropolis, Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens isn’t about sightseeing per se but about exploring. It’s about wandering around neighbourhoods like Kolonaki and stopping for a leisurely coffee in a people watching cafe. Make no mistake: Athenians have great and enduring obsession with coffee. Coffee culture brings people out of their homes and into the streets cafes.
a creaking calendar of events The Greek capital is a city that rarely sleeps. Each month of the year, there’s something happening somewhere – a festival, a show or an exhibition -– and oen at the same time. Right now, Athens is gearing up to host World Travel Awards’ Europe Gala Ceremony. The travel industry’s leading awards programme will stage its red carpet event at the stunning Zappeion Megaron Hall on Saturday 30 June. Surrounded by over 200,000sqm of gardens with meandering paths, fountains and over 70 neoclassical sculptures, Zappeion Megaron Hall was one of the first buildings in Europe specifically designed for exhibitions and conferences. Built back in 1988, it has served as the headquarters for the Greek EU Presidency and the Press Centre for the Ministry of the Press during the 2004 Olympic Games. In town in November? Don’t miss the Athens marathon – aka the mother of all marathons, whose finish line is in Athens’ magnificent Olympic Stadium (the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games). According to legend, the race covers the same ground that the Athenian messenger Pheidippides ran when he brought news of victory from the balefield of Marathon 2,500 years ago. Fantastic food Chances are all this partying will make you feel hungry but fortunately food is a passion in Athens – just ask locals to recommend favourite spots to start a lively debate. Whoever you head, be sure to try dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves), baked moussaka, mouthwatering mezze, succulent souvlaki, feta and Greek fava dip mopped up with freshly baked breads. Make no mistake: you'll fast find yourself slipping into a food coma when in Athens….
to market, to market Athens’ buzzy Central Market – a cacophony of shopkeepers, food sellers, scents and performers – is remnant of an older, miraculously unspoiled world Put your bargaining skills to the test by haggling for spices and this year’s olive oil, then make for the famous Monastiraki Flee Market at Avissynias Square to barter for everything from books to paintings, clothes and trinkets. Even if you come away empty handed, listening to stallholders sing and shout about their wares is half the fun.
