Europ Cultural Heritage
Glorious Scenery
Europe’s almost unmanageable wealth of attractions is its biggest single draw: the birthplace of democracy in Athens, the Renaissance art of Florence, the graceful canals of Venice, the Napoleonic splendour of Paris, and the multilayered historical and cultural canvas of London. Less obvious but no less impressive attractions include Moorish palaces in Andalucía, the fascinating East-meets-West brew of İstanbul in Turkey, the majesty of meticulously restored imperial palaces in Russia's former capital St Petersburg and the ongoing project of Gaudí's La Sagrada Família in Barcelona.
There's a huge diversity of natural scenery: rugged Scottish Highlands with glens and lochs; Norway's fabulous fjords, seemingly chipped to jagged perfection by giants; the vine-raked valleys of the Loire; and the steppe-like plains of central Spain. If you're looking for beaches, a circuit of the Mediterranean's northern coast reveals one gem after another. Or strike out to lesser known, yet beautiful coastal regions such as the Baltic and Black Seas. Mountain lovers should head to the Alps: they march across central Europe taking in France, Switzerland, Austria, northern Italy and tiny Liechtenstein.

Europe has some of the best nightlife in the world. Globally famous DJs keep the party going in London, Berlin and Paris, all of which also oer top-class entertainment, especially theatre and live music. Other key locations for high-energy nightlife include Moscow, Belgrade, Budapest and Madrid, while those hankering for something cosier can add Dublin's pubs or Vienna's cafes to their itinerary. Continue to party on the continent's streets at a multiplicity of festivals and celebrations, from city parades attended by hundreds of thousands to intimate concerts in an ancient amphitheatre.
Once you've ticked o the great museums, panoramic vistas and energetic nightlife, what's left? A chance to indulge in a culinary adventure to beat all others, that's what! Who wouldn't want to snack on pizza in Naples, souvlaki in Santorini or even haggis in Scotland? But did you also know that Britain has some of the best Indian restaurants in the world; that Turkey's doner kebab is a key part of contemporary German food culture; and that in the Netherlands you can gorge on an Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table)? Once again Europe's diversity and global reach is its trump card.

FIFE ARMS HOTE

EUROPE
The Fife Arms in Braemar is being sensitively restored and returned to its former splendour as a first class hotel. The building is a significant landmark in the scenic village famed for the Braemar Gathering annual highland games, the Cairngorms National Park and its Royal Deeside connections. Owned by Iwan and Manuela Wirth, co-Presidents of internationally acclaimed art gallery, Hauser & Wirth, The Fife Arms will build on and reflect their interest in heritage, tradition, contemporary art and culture. They hope to bring their love of art and design to the historic interiors
of the building, creating a unique and transformative experience for guests. This begins with the artist and poet Alec Finlay, who is collaborating on the research and design of The Fife Arms. Responding to the elements in the landscape and culture of Upper Deeside and ensuring that these are represented within the building and remain central to the philosophy of the project. www.thefifearms.com

HÔTEL LUTETIA When the Boucicaut family opened the first modern department store, they changed how Parisians, and then the world, do their shopping. Once they had transformed retail commerce, their decision to innovate hoteliery was almost an afterthought. Their store was such a runaway success, that their many suppliers, bringing luxuries from afar, needed a comfortable place to spend the night. Visiting customers from across Europe also needed an enticement to stay longer. The board of 'Le Bon Marché' decide to open a modern, palace-inspired, luxury hotel in Paris, directly across from their famous store. www.hotellutetia.com

INIALA HARBOUR
HOUSE
EUROPE
A surprise contender for an emerging hotspot, Malta’s capital Valletta is scrubbing up very nicely for its moment in the limelight as European Capital of Culture 2018, rather easily done when you are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the sunniest places in Europe. Another reason to hop on a plane is Iniala Harbour House, which opens at the end of the year. Set on a prime harbour-front position on St Barbara Bastion, it is the second hotel from a British entrepreneur-turned-philanthropist whose Iniala Beach House in Phuket was built on the site of his own beach house, destroyed in the 2004 tsunami (a chunk of the revenues funds his charitable foundation). www.iniala.com

L'OSCAR HOTEL Jacques Garcia knows how to create drama. Rich, decadent and deeply sexy interiors are the French designer’s speciality, as seen at La Reserve and Hôtel Costes in Paris. This spring he brings his theatrical signature style to London for L’oscar. Turning a gorgeous Grade-II former Baptist Church HQ into something decidedly more sinful-looking, Garcia has papered halls in embossed purple leather, while the 39 bedrooms are lavishly decorated in deep purples, rich reds and burnished golds with wonderfully tactile silks, velvets and damask. There are original religious flourishes – including terracotta biblical narrative panels by Doulton above huge marble fireplaces – but the showstopper is The Baptist Grill, which takes over the beautiful octagonal former chapel. www.loscar.com

KETTNER’S TOWNHOUSE
EUROPE
Established in 1867 by August Kettner, rumoured to have been chef to Napoleon III, Kettner’s was one of the first restaurants in London to serve French food. Popular with historical figures and creatives throughout its 151-year history, legend has it that King Edward VII courted his mistress, actress Lillie Langtry, in its cabinets particuliers (private dining rooms). Remaining open through both World Wars, Kettner’s entertained visitors including Sir Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie, Oscar Wilde, Bing Crosby and Margaret Thatcher. The French restaurant at Kettner’s Townhouse has a menu inspired by its past, using locally-sourced ingredients. The design retains the original Grade II listed details, including the floral plasterwork and mirrors that line the walls. The interiors feature rosewood and mahogany furniture in a warm colour palette. kettnerstownhouse.com/hotel
