I

HAVE always wondered if anyone ever reads this column – I thought it was only Tony Liddar (I couldn’t resist a shout out to the magazine’s self-confessed number one fan!) And clearly people do as my guardian angel noticed last month’s wish list and treated me to lunch at Sat Bains, Nottingham. It was an 8 course tasting menu in the Nucleus Kitchen – where the chefs experiment with new concepts right in front of you. I will let just a few of the pictures do the talking:

I have taken my mother on the Orient Express for a special occasion and it was even better than that! So enormous thanks to my benefactor. I will never forget the experience. I also recently enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the Hornblower (see page 24) and dinner at The Blue Ball, Braunston probably the friendliest pub in Rutland. I am still yet to try The Wheatsheaf but if I continue in this vein I will have nothing to wear; there is precious little in my wardrobe as it is, but I am enjoying it all while it lasts. I can diet in the USA!? Pete and I were also very kindly taken to The Fox and Hounds, Exton and that was also very special – incredible food but it was the stunning décor that captivated me. I do recommend. So another month and more talking about food – I promise to change the subject for my last edition! Happy Holidays

Summer Reading Abigail Richardson reveals the secrets of ‘book group’ or should we say wine club?

B

EFORE I go, I would like to share with you some of my favourite books and thank the two groups that I have belonged to here in Oakham. They have been the highlights of my month and I have made some very good friends. The first started at my house with a selection of Philip P hilip Larkin poems and, in hindsight, it was an incredibly successful way to bring together a group, as was the never ending flow of wine!

“The only reason you say that race was not an issue is because you wish it was not.” Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. (Thanks Emma). This one actually split the group but I could not put it down – I initially bought it on the kindle but had to own in paperback too – it was so inspirational and beautifully written. I completely concur with its review: “There are some novels that tell a great story and others that make you change the way you look at the world. This is a book that manages to do both.” Similarly so does The Help by Kathryn Stockett, thanks to Amander I finally got round to reading – it is a moving piece of fact/fiction which is shockingly revealing about Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s. Also Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe – I used to teach this in the USA – illuminating.

“Some women are lost in the fire. Some are made from it.” Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells (thanks Jacquie) – For anyone with a complicated mother/ daughter relationship– I will say no more!

“An artist who maintains that he has been misunderstood is almost always a bad artist who, I’m afraid to say, has been understood.” I am not particularly a fan of the psychological thriller but Headhunters by Jo Nesbø was brilliant (thanks Nicky) – exciting and not too distressing although the characters were definitely not sympathetic. I gather, though, Nesbø’s Harry Hole series is not for the faint hearted. A quick nod to Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins – Amander’s favourite, and Before I go to Sleep by SJ Watson – same genre and very good reads.

“. . . to serve so selflessly, you have to subdue something in yourself.” ‘Chick lit’, no apologies- my go to summer genre: I Don’t Know How She Does It, Allison Pearson – such a reassuring read for a guilt ridden, busy, working mother! I didn’t care for the film though. Oh and anything by Liane Moriarty – Big Little Lies was particularly fun – (thanks Helen).

“The best men are not consistent in good—why should the worst men be consistent in evil?” The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins – another classic and Emily’s favourite (thanks Kim). Probably my preferred genre this novel was and considered one of the first examples of detective fiction. It is long but worth the trouble. Also in the same class are anything by Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Edgar Alan Poe and Roald Dahl’s adult short stories.

“To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love” Finally my all-time favourite – Pride and Prejudice – yes predictable for an English teacher, but truly entertaining with laugh out loud moments from the brilliantly witty Jane Austen. Love the BBC version and Matthew Mcfadyen in the film but Kiera Knightly? My daughter and I saw some of the latter filmed at Brooke Church and Judy Dench came out to say hello…that was a long time ago.

• Walkers Bookshop, I see, have most of these titles on their display table in Oakham by the entrance – Good choices!

The cost is £7 per day or £30 for the week. Dates confirmed to date are w/c 27/07/16, 01/08/16 and 08/08/16, however please register interest or enquire about further dates by contacting Conrad Nancarrow at CGN@ oakham.rutland.sch.uk

Move over minimalism…Oakham is a brave new world of exotic prints & faux fauna! Jacquie Rumble explores…

Design News • Look out for ‘Pebbles’ (right), a new design coming to The Rug Studio, in the next few weeks. And if you want to change the feel and look of a room quickly this summer, then adding a statement rug is a cost effective way to achieve this. The Rug Studio in Uppingham and Oakham Rugs (left) have a wonderful selection of such rugs which come in many different colour combinations: www.therugstudio.co.uk and www. oakhamorientalrugs.co.uk

H

AVING spent recent months craving our home to be a sanctuary from the outside and the harsh elements, the summer trends of 2016 are now encouraging us to bring something of the outside in now that the days are longer and warmer. Bold flaura and fauna in print and in faux form represent a massive shift away from the minimalist approach we have seen over the last 24 months. Strong jungle inspired wallpaper prints are a massive trend and for those brave enough to take the plunge, a bathroom is a good place to start your relationship with the exotic print world. Wallpapers designers such as Designer’s Guild (Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors) or Arte (SoJo Home: www.sojohome.co.uk) both provide a wide range of choices for such a design choice. Continuing with the lush, green theme, the interior designer Abigail Ahern is a massive advocate of the more unusual and exotically inspired faux fauna with a selection of oversized jungle leaves through to gorgeous lime green Californian buds that give your home that contemporary pop of colour, requiring no looking after at all! Put in an aged terracotta pot and you’re bang on trend. Check out Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors, Albar’s Den and SoJo Home in Oakham for stunning faux foliage. The metallic theme is not new to many of us, but whilst we are being told to wave goodbye to copper, it’s the shift to gold and brass that’s big news in interiors now. Combine some well chosen gold accessories with the official colour of 2016 and your home will be achingly cool. Rose quartz, or rather a soft pink is indeed the colour of 2016 and, whilst the idea might conjure up images of a saccharine baby girl’s nursery, get the shade right and Pantone’s HQ reassures us that the colour will convey a sense of compassion and composure. Accent with blues and greys to add some masculinity and keep the palette looking edgy and current. Fords of Oakham have many elegant accessories to adorn this look and Sarah Harding Interiors (www.sarahhardinginteriors.co.uk) also stock up to the minute furniture collections in an array of colours and design, or for a quick and cost effective make over, they can re-upholster individual pieces and make loose covers to order in a fabric of your choice. Smith&Jo is the new home interiors shop, based on Northgate in Oakham set up by Interior Designer Jo Robinson and Ella James - the online homeware company (ellajames.co.uk). Their stock looks carefully curated to offer our homes affordable yet beautiful and different products. Smith&Jo also plays host to SoJo Home, an interior design service run by Jo Robinson. With a strong focus on affordability, Jo believes that a beautiful home can be achieved without having to spend vast sums. She prides herself on seeking out new and exciting designers and has an eclectic collection of wallpapers and soft furnishings in the shop as well as flooring from Barefoot. Also check out Barefoot’s own showroom on Station Approach as it is now twice the size and stocks an array of flooring choices whatever your preference as well as a selection of luxurious designer beds. Hot smoked darnes of salmon…

…. with salt-baked Jersey Royal potatoes, lemon hollandaise and griddled asparagus. By Sean Hope, head chef at The Olive Branch in Clipsham PHOTOS: CLIVE DOYLE

F

IRST things first, what’s a darne? Well, basically it’s a thick, on-the-bone fish steak, in this case salmon. But don’t let the name confuse you – you could use any thick, meaty cut of salmon, or indeed tuna or monkfish or, well, it’s up to you… It doesn’t even have to be fish or on the bone! As always, the key is to use high quality ingredients and to enjoy cooking them. And with this recipe, the quartet of ingredients riff beautifully off one another, making for a perfectly in-tune summer dish. The smoked flavour from the oil (note: you may have to find a good deli to find smoked oil, or order online) gives the salmon a distinctive note that goes beautifully with the delicate, fresh lemon hollandaise and griddled asparagus. In fact, the lemon hollandaise is a great summer standby – it’s fantastic with so many things. All recipes below serve four. HOT SMOKED DARNE OF SALMON • 4 x 200g salmon darnes • 1 tablespoon smoked oil • Knob of butter • Half lemon Method 1. Heat the frying pan and add the smoked oil 2. Season the salmon darnes with salt and pepper 3. Place the salmon into the frying pan to colour for two minutes 4. Turn over the salmon and add the butter 5. Cook for two minutes, then place into a preheated oven at 190C (Gas Mark 5) and roast for five minutes 6. Remove the salmon from the oven and allow to rest for around two minutes 7. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and serve

SALT-BAKED JERSEY ROYAL POTATOES • 400g Jersey Royal potatoes – washed and dried • 2 sprigs of thyme • 4 cloves garlic, crushed • 250g flaked natural sea salt • 1 teaspoon pink peppercorns • 1 stick lemongrass, roughly chopped Method 1. Sprinkle half the salt into a high-sided baking tray 2. Preheat the oven to 190C (Gas Mark 5) 3. Place the garlic, thyme and Jersey potatoes onto the salt, then sprinkle the remainder of the salt over the top 4. Place the potatoes into the pre-heated oven and bake for 3040 minutes until soft 5. When cooked remove the potatoes from the salt, brush off any excess salt and serve

GRIDDLED ASPARAGUS • 20 x large spears of English asparagus, trimmed and washed • Knob of butter • Salt and pepper Method 1. Heat the griddle pan 2. Drizzle the asparagus with two tablespoons of rapeseed oil 3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and place into the griddle pan 4. Grill the asparagus in two batches for four minutes on a medium heat, giving them a shake now and then, allowing them to cook evenly 5. When cooked, serve immediately

LEMON HOLLANDAISE • 200g unsalted butter, melted • 3 egg yolks • Zest and juice of one lemon • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1 teaspoon sherry vinegar Method 1. Place the yolks, mustard, vinegar and finely grated lemon zest into a beaker 2. Using a hand/stick blender, blitz the ingredients for 60 seconds 3. Gradually pour the melted butter into the beaker, using the hand blender until smooth and creamy 4. Finish the hollandaise by adding the lemon juice, then season to taste 5. Keep warm before serving

Leicester food & drink guide Leicester has a food and drink scene to match its recent footballing achievements. Here’s your guide to the best places… By Matt Wright & Tim Burke

N

OT so long ago, Leicester wasn’t far from a national joke. Adrian Mole’s hometown was – unfairly – regarded as boredom in city form, somewhere you went out of necessity, never desire. But now the once-grey Leicester is in the pink. First Richard III, then Ranieri and his ruthless Foxes (and, of course, it has always had a first-class rugby team). All that regal and sporting energy is being matched by a burgeoning food and drink scene, led by a fantastic independent sector. What’s more, Leicester is well under an hour on the train from Stamford and Oakham. So what are you waiting for? Here’s Great Food Club’s guide to some great places to visit in Leicester…

ST MARTIN’S SQUARE Highcross is where you’ll find John Lewis, Carluccio’s, and all the chains, but two minutes’ walk away is St Martin’s Square, where the far more interesting independents reign supreme.

Gelato Village

Gelato Village (2 St Martin’s Square) is an authentic Italian ice cream parlour whose owners hail from Turin. It produces gelato and sorbetto on the premises, using a traditional Italian churning method known as ‘mantecazione’. One of the best things about Gelato Village is its commitment to sourcing local ingredients, so all of Gelato Village’s milk comes from a herd of Red Poll cows at Belvoir Ridge Creamery in Eastwell, Leicestershire. And all sorbettos are made with fruit purchased at Leicester Market. The quality of the ice cream is superb: dense, creamy, luxurious gelato, and light, fresh-tasting sorbetto. These are served alongside excellent coffees, waffles and Italian pastries in a lovely, vibrant atmosphere that brings a little bit of Italy to Leicester. Gelato Village is open late – till 10pm Monday to Thursday and till 11pm Friday and Saturday.

45 West bar

45 West Bottle Shop & Bar (4a Hotel Street) is just outside St Martin’s Square and owned by Leicestershire-based artisan distiller 45 West, producer of Burleighs London Dry Gin. A bar and bottle shop combined, it showcases an excellent cocktail menu with an eclectic offering of fine wines, craft beers and, of course, Burleighs Gin. Elegantly decorated with a great atmosphere, 45 West is the perfect venue for the drinks enthusiast, with a specialist wine department overseen by expert Andrew Hill from wine and spirit merchant George Hill of Loughborough. www.coolasleicester.co.uk

St Martin’s Tea & Coffee (2-6 St Martin’s Square) is an artisan coffee roaster and loose leaf tea merchant that also serves fresh food and cakes. And on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 6pm-9pm, it plays host to Crafty Burger, one of the city’s most-talked-about and highly rated burger joints.

St Martin’s Tea & Coffee 33 Cank St (33 Cank St, St Martin’s Square) is a cool cocktail bar and café with a great range of drinks and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to while away a few hours sipping on Mezcal Margaritas and nibbling on Manchego cheese and sun-dried tomatoes.

QUEEN’S ROAD In the shadow of Leicester University, Queen’s Road links lively, bohemian Clarendon Park to the wealthy professional areas of Knighton and Stoneygate. It punches above its weight with an intriguing collection of independent restaurants, bars, delicatessens, butchers and grocers. It’s refreshingly free of pretension – an everyday thoroughfare but with a dash of style and character.

Christopher James Deli (60B, Queen’s Road) is many people’s idea of the ideal deli. It’s small, cramped even, but rammed to the gunnels with all sorts of wonderful produce waiting to be discovered. Cheese is the key element – Stilton and Red Leicester are ever popular but it’s the continentals that are probably the best sellers. Alongside the cheeses are a wide range of cured meats – salamis from Hungary, Germany, Italy and Denmark, and reflecting Clarendon Park’s longestablished Polish community, meats such as boczek, kabanos and weijska. Behind the counter stand oils, vinegars, condiments and a range of leaf teas and coffee beans. You’ll also find an impressive selection of pastas, biscuits for cheese, chocolates, chutneys and jams. Babelas Continental Bar (77 Queen’s Road) is named after the Afrikaans word for hangover and this is the area’s most laid-back, easy going bar. The feel is of a slightly down-at-heel living room, but it all gives rise to a friendly, intimate atmosphere that pulls in a mixed crowd. The wine selection is excellent, backed up with popular cheese boards. Award winning real ales (Landlord, Harvest Pale) and a wide range of whiskies are available too. Dos Hermanos/Barceloneta (54 Queen’s Road) are two linked venues. One side – Dos Hermanos – is a lively 1940s Cuban-themed bar, decked out with real flair. It does a roaring trade in cocktails and is packed at weekends for its celebrated Full Monty breakfasts and hangover-busting brunch dishes. The other side – Barceloneta (open evenings only from 6.30pm) – is a traditional-style tapas bar now established for over 20 years. Try dishes such as Asturian cod and chorizo pie or fresh tuna fishballs with pine nuts, cinnamon and herbs while you sip your choice of seven different sherries.

OTHER PLACES TO TRY IN LEICESTER…

Christoper James Deli

Maiyango (13-21 St Nicholas Place) is an award-winning and highly individual restaurant, hotel and bar in central Leicester, with a passion for cooking with local produce. The White Peacock (14-16 King Street) is a stylish restaurant and bar in a nice city centre spot offering a varied menu. Peter Pizzeria (9 Welford Place) offers authentic Neapolitan-style sourdough pizzas in a cool and funky setting, and is where Claudio Ranieri took his Leicester team out for pizza after keeping a clean sheet last season.

Babelas

Barceloneta and Dos Hermanos

Lansdowne

The Lansdowne (121-123 London Rd) is a spacious bar/restaurant offering top quality casual dining. Paddy’s Marten Inn (98 Martin St) is a 1960s working class boozer that has been transformed into a vibrant curry house. Featured on Jamie Oliver’s Great Britain TV series, it has a fabulous, unique atmosphere and offers authentic home-style Indian cooking. The other place to go for a curry in Leicester is Belgrave Road, known as The Golden Mile, where’s there’s choice a-plenty.

The Admiral Hornblower, Oakham The Admiral Hornblower Hotel and Restaurant is a beautiful privately owned, family run hotel in the heart of Oakham. Abigail Richardson and friends investigate…

I

T was with great enthusiasm that I set out for lunch at the recently refurbished Admiral Hornblower in Oakham. I have many happy memories of the pub and am delighted it has been taken on and restored by the successful team at the Finch’s Arms in Hambleton. A sister venture for The Finches, daughter Charlotte told me that her parents have over 30 years’ experience in the business; they bought the Peacock at Redmile in 1987 which sold in 1999. Then they went on to open the Blue Ball in Braunston in 1991 and on to the Finch’s Arms at Hambleton in 1997. Mark Gough of course heads the kitchen there now and the rest is history. With her parents threatening to retire, Charlotte and her brother thought The

Hornblower would be a fantastic launch pad for their independent careers in the trade. So with their parents’ experience and help they are all taking the next step together. Charlotte, having previously a background in in Fashion PR in London, explains further: “Both myself and my brother grew up in traditional English Inns, so you could say it’s in our blood and my brother has been in the hospitality industry for many years. I think we always knew we would carry on the family business one day. We have handpicked a fantastic front of house and kitchen team. Our Head Chef, Gary Hewitt previously Head Chef at the World Service in Nottingham, has created a relaxed and exciting menu using local fresh produce. The Pub is at the heart of English culture and we wanted to expand on the Admiral Hornblower’s cosy traditions and add a touch of luxury with fantastic food.” The menu was just my kind of thing – lots of sharing boards, nibbles and interesting looking starters. Who needs a main? – Although they

did look tantalising with such offerings as Lemon Sole and Confit Lamb Shoulder and actually I opted for the Roasted Chicken Breast with Cesar Salad (£9.50) – crispy, succulent warm chicken breast – beautifully cooked with oodles of leaves and tasty croutons. Geetisha had the Smoked Haddock, Tomato and Parmesan Risotto (£9.50) which she devoured although it was nearly the same size as her! Emma also thoroughly enjoyed the Blue Cheese and Pear Salad with Walnuts and Chicory (£10.50). We were served complimentary olives and warm bread to start and it was truly a feast and great value for money. We are planning a return with the husbands to try the sharing boards such as the Assiette of Charcuterie with breads and pickles at a reasonable £12 and the generous looking fish board at £14, and we may even get to the desserts next time….can’t wait! • Log on to www.hornblowerhotel.co.uk or call Tel: 01572 723004 for reservations.

The Wheatsheaf Langham Congratulations to the also newly refurbished Wheatsheaf pub in Langham for their recent awards; they were named Best Overall Small Producer at the eighth annual British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray

H

EAD chef Andy Saunders impressed a panel of top pie experts including TV chef Andy Bates, food critic Charles Campion and Chef Rachel Green with his succulent steak and ale pie. Andy said a commitment to using the best local ingredients was key to his success. Landlord Mike Kilby added: “The awards are proudly on display and we’re shouting from the rooftops that our pies are among the best in the country. We want Rutlanders to come and experience our offerings.” You can find The Steak and Ale Pie on the menu at £13.95. It is served with a choice of potato, fresh vegetables and rich cooking reduction gravy but due to popularity there may be limited stock. The versatile menu also includes: Chargrilled Rump of Lamb served with crushed minted new season potatoes, red wine reduction and fresh vegetables for £16.95, Sticky BBQ Stincanto, a generous cut

of Pork marinated in their own BBQ sauce and slow cooked for 12 hours until meltingly tender served with spiced ‘slaw’, salad and skinny fries, 14.95 and King Prawn Stir fry with mixed vegetables, noodles and their own soy, oyster, ginger and garlic sauce for £12.95. New to the menu are stone baked Pizzas, freshly prepared and cooked to order and topped with fresh ingredients. • What are we waiting for? The Kitchen Showroom Abigail Richardson returns to one of her favourite showroom locations in Oakham...

G

ARY, one of the owners of The Kitchen Showroom on The Braunston Road in Oakham, invited me back for a cup of coffee to show me their transformed showroom and the latest in kitchen trends. And transformed it was - gone are the chunky solid oak, traditional kitchens which are now replaced by striking, high gloss minimalist designs. The ever popular Shaker styles remain on display but in new, contemporary colour palettes including stone and porcelain. Apparently almond is becoming a very popular choice and looks stylish when complemented by a timber that ingeniously shows no grain. Also on display are the latest in modern high gloss and flat matt colours which range from various tones of grey through to stone and deep anthracite, some with beautiful metallic hues. Not only are the displays in the showroom beautiful, but they are also amazingly functional with imaginative German storage features. Gary assured me that, although the showroom displays are moving towards the more modern and minimalist, they still cater for the occasional customer who wants a traditional style to their kitchen. Also on trend and on display are a variety of decadent quartz worktops in a vast range of colours, some with mirror chippings included for that real wow factor. Having the factory in Oakham, using the latest in production methods and with materials that are not on the high street gives this company an edge on prices and, I know from experience, they can accommodate every budget. The coffee was good, the kitchens were beautiful... so much so like most visitors to the showroom, I left wanting one now. Or at least when I return in three years!

Naturally Beautiful Catherine Varney looks to some chemical-free alternatives for achieving the face and body beautiful this summer

Chemical-free cosmetics:

When it comes to looking after your skin, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it. After all, we all know that we’ll look and feel far better if we fuel our bodies with fresh fruit and vegetables rather than fast food: so why then would we use chemical-laden cosmetics that are absorbed into our bloodstream through our skin? It’s a view shared by Meesha Kanadia who has recently opened Apothecary shop Amelia Nour in Stoneygate which offers a selection of vegan and vegetarian products from the most popular well-being and beauty brands from around the world including Elemental Herbology, Oskia Skincare, Odacite and Neom Organics. As a huge fan of all things natural, I was delighted to try some of the products from Odacite, founded by breast cancer survivor Valerie Grandury who wanted to create a skincare brand which delivered on performance and purity (removing toxins from her daily routine was an important step in her recovery). The Wild Carrot Serum Concentrate gets five-star rated reviews online, smelt absolutely divine and absorbed into my skin on contact without leaving a greasy residue. After just a couple of days usage my skin felt more supple, smoother and appeared more radiant – certainly the long-term anti-ageing benefits would be significant. I also loved the vitamin-rich Oskia cleansing gel and day cream, which combined to gently cleanse my skin and leave an excellent, fresh base for make-up (meaning I could even forgo my primer on the days I used them). Many of the products can only otherwise be found in selected and exclusive stores worldwide so this little treasure trove of goodies is a must-visit for beauty addicts everywhere. • Amelia Nour, 59 Francis Street, Leicester, Tel: 0116 431 5395, www.amelianour.co.uk

‘Kind to your hair’ haircare: Great hair doesn’t stop the moment you leave the salon and to ensure you have envy-inducing locks everyday, you need professional haircare products to use at home. In fact some of the high street brands could do more harm than good as many are full of silicone oils and other artificial additives, which give the hair a temporary shine-effect, but add a ‘plasticky’ coating, leaving it unable to absorb natural, nourishing ingredients that it would really benefit from.

Thomas Potts is an expert in haircare and in addition to owning three local salons also boasts his own range of products which can be bought in-store or online. Even better, each product is targeted to very specific customer needs so there’s no more guesswork over which to choose: Shampoo One is for fine hair and is a must have for anyone who finds it difficult to get movement or body when blow drying at home. Hair feeling dull, heavy and laden-down with products? Go for Shampoo Four which contains tea tree extract and eucalyptus oil, ideal for any sensitive or easily irritated scalps. It’s also great for removing heavy product build-up from waxes and hair spray to invigorate the scalp, ensuring hair feels fresh and light again. • Thomas Hairdressing, The Maltings, 15 Mill Street, Oakham, Tel: 01572 756561, www.thomashairdressing.co.uk

A holistic approach to your health: If you’re not getting the results you want from your diet and exercise regime, it’s time to make a change. Steve Rutherford-Bate owns Body Fitness Personal Training in Market Harborough and believes the only way to achieve success is with an integrated holistic approach that takes into account nutrition, exercise, mental attitude and stresses on the body: “The body is driven by hormones and it’s important to control these to bring about long-lasting change.” The coach-client relationship is vital here and the team at Body Fitness will put together a bespoke programme which will help you lose weight, change your body shape and increase energy levels. Steve told me: “We can teach people why diets don’t work and can actually cause increased fat gain, why developing lean muscle tissue is the best thing for a healthy looking body and why you need to control your daily stresses if you want long-term results.” The range of services includes Personal Training Programmes, Junior and Parent coaching, Rehabilitation programmes, a Back Clinic, Weight Loss & Nutrition programmes and Pre and Post Natal Programmes. And the testimonials really do speak for themselves, as one happy client commented: “Since starting the programme I have gone from a size 16 to a size 10 and my body shape has changed massively. I have curves in the right places and those unsightly rolls of fat have disappeared. Best of all, I have reduced my body fat % significantly meaning I’m much healthier and less at risk of developing serious illness.” Why not go along and see what you can achieve too? • Body Fitness Personal Training, Archway House, Lubenham Hill, Market Harborough, Tel: 01858 410820, www.bodyfitnesspt.com

Luxury skincare: The team at Barnsdale Spa are delighted to have recently introduced natural and high-end skincare brand ESPA therapy and retail products. From Express Facials that you can fit into a lunch break to the Advanced Skin Radiance Facial which takes a luxurious 85 minutes, there really is a treatment for all budgets and skin requirements. Body treatments include the Detox Wrap to eliminate toxins and improve circulation (ideal before you unveil your beach body!) and the Salt and Oil body scrub which is also perfect for preparing your skin before going into the sun. Salon Manager Annabel Miles told me: “All of the products are packed with beautiful natural blends of essential oils and natural carrier oils. Each treatment is specifically designed and tailored to each individual client’s concerns and needs by using sensory testing, carried out by our highly trained therapists. As the manager of Barnsdale Hair and Beauty, I know our clients will fall in love with these products.” • Barnsdale Spa, Oakham, Rutland, Tel: 01572771313, www.barnsdalehotel.co.uk

Creme Hair and Beauty celebrates 20 years!

E

STABLISHED local salon Creme Hair and Beauty has recently celebrated its 20 year anniversary of providing exceptional hair and beauty services in Rutland. Launched in 1996 as a hair salon by Chris Gunby from a small unit in the Maltings, the beauty side to the business was developed in 1999 and expanded into larger premises. Fast forward 20 years (via a salon at Greetham golf course!) and the salon now boasts 32 loyal staff members and is perfectly situated in The Old Church on Mill Street: a stunning refurbishment project that deservedly won British Hairdressing Salon Interior of the Year in 2010. The many regular and happy customers love the professional customer service, coupled with a relaxed, friendly approach: and of course the huge variety of hair and beauty treatments on offer. Always looking to expand their repertoire, the salon have recently taken on Redken professional hair products in addition to Kerastase, as well as hair extensions and deep conditioning treatments. The beauty side is run by salon manager Emma Stokes and along with her team of beauty therapists offers a full range of ESPA face and body treatments as well as nail services using Jessica products, Mii mineral make-up and St Tropez tanning. Chris has always been a firm advocate of training and developing staff members: a commitment that was justly rewarded in 2011 with an award for Outstanding Contribution for Training from Leicester College. And in an industry where high turnover of staff is the norm, the salon are proud to have 5 staff members who have worked for them from apprenticeship through to senior / master stylist for over 15 years. Open 6 days a week with a late night until 8pm on Thursdays, the salon also regularly hold charity events; the last one which was in aid of Blood Cancer raised over £2,500 in just one evening. Chris told me: “My aim since day one has been to provide the premier hair and beauty experience in Rutland, whilst being at the forefront of training excellence and new product innovation. The difference at Creme is that we will go the extra mile for anyone; this has been proven over the last twenty years time and time again. Here’s to continued success with our fabulous clients for the next twenty years and beyond!” • Creme Hair and Beauty, The Old Church, 8 Mill Street, Oakham, Tel 01572 723823, www.cremehairandbeauty.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2016

THE THOMAS RANGE A little over 18 months ago we were proud to launch the THOMAS shampoo and conditioner range. It was a product born over the two previous years, with countless hours taken trying different recipes sent to us from our chemists in Kent, sending them back with lists of positives and negatives until finally, we managed to all agree on the three main Shampoos that will be the corner stone of the range. Shampoos I, II and III. They were at first sold only in salon and used at the backwash and we marketed them very little beyond our four walls, this didn’t seem to stop us supplying many clients with them and the feedback was overwhelmingly supportive. The following summer due to popular request, we stocked some small travel sized bottles and again having the knowledge to inform our clients of every ingredient and knowing its origins from source to shelf was invaluable, the fact it is 100% not tested on animals and is 100% made in Britain also seemed to really go down well. Late last year we had an online shop produced by a local design company (DUO DESIGN) and attached it to our existing website, this as well has been a great success. We currently distribute to all four corners of Britain and have had even more great feedback. Where clients have requested smaller bottles for travel, a pump instead of a flip cap or refills to an existing bottle to cut down on their carbon footprint, we have been able to oblige and this has only served to grow the reputation of the THOMAS brand as a whole. We now are supplying other salons outside of Rutland/Leicestershire with the product and have also been approached by several boutique hotels with the aim to stock their rooms with our travel sized range for overnight guests to enjoy. It is still very early days and we are, of course, learning all the time but with our aim to educate and supply as many establishments as possible. We are lucky enough to be making a few small waves in the field.

VINEYARD in Brixworth, which is owned by a Harborough couple, is inviting wine enthusiasts to attend a celebratory event marking its one year anniversary. The event also coincides with the launch of the vineyard’s first wines of 2016. The joint celebration will take place at Brynne Vineyard on Saturday 9th July from 10 to 4 and is free to attend. Visitors will be able to enjoy a scenic walk around the vines, ask questions about wine production and sample a glass of wine with the owners. “We are very excited to unveil our first selection of wines. We have carried out a great deal of work on the site and the tasting barn so we are looking forward to welcoming the public for the first time,” comments Julia Bennett who owns Brynne Vineyard with husband Mark. “Everyone is welcome. Join us for a chat to see what we’re up to, or come and justenjoy the scenery with a glass of wine.” The couple spotted the vineyard on Rightmove in 2015 and instantly decided that the venture was just what they had been looking for. One year and a lot of hard work later, they have just completed labelling up the first delivery of wines, all whilst still pursuing their respective accountancy and engineering jobs. Very much a family run business, one of the vineyard’s wines ‘Georgie Girl’ is named after Mark and Julia’s six year old daughter. A set of wine label designs have been commissioned for the launch to reflect the delicate blended flavours that have been created in the different wines. “Working together as a family to achieve something has been the best part of the whole project,” Julia adds. “We’re lucky to have had so much support from our friends and family who have helped with everything from harvesting to tasting – we couldn’t have done it without them.” Brynne Vineyard (www.brynnevineyard.com) is located on a 10 acre site off the A508 between Market Harborough and Northampton on the shores of Pitsford Reservoir. The vineyard sells rose, white and sparkling wines as well as offering an adopt-a-vine service. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2016

Brooke Priory Pupils Join the Fight Against Cancer

B

A Move to Rutland Provides the Purrfect Dream Job for new Villager

ROOKE Priory School in Oakham is adding Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life to the timetable for the summer term. Brooke Priory School is hosting a special event on the school’s playing fields on Thursday July 7 as part of Race for Life’s schools programme. Around 180 youngsters, aged from three to eleven years old, will join forces with parents, teachers and siblings to take on cancer and walk, jog or run ( maximum 5km age dependent) in aid of Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. Participants will be asked to make a donation to enter the event at the Brooke Priory Just Giving page. Elizabeth Bell, headmistress at Brooke Priory School, said: “Race for Life is a great addition to the school timetable. The whole school is supporting the event so it will be a real team effort and a great day out for parents, pupils and staff, all whilst raising money for a seriously good cause. Most of us know someone who has been touched by cancer and we all have our special reasons for taking part and wanting to help more people survive.”

Relocating to Oakham at the beginning of the year has created the perfect opportunity for local cat lover, Sarah Partridge.

H

AVING run a Pet Sitting Franchise in Cheltenham and Gloucester for the last 6 years, Sarah has focused her new business on the aspect she loves the most, caring for our feline friends. At Purrfect Cat Sitting Sarah offers a high quality, professional and friendly service, visiting your cats in their own home whilst you are away on holiday. “Cats can be very territorial about their surroundings and some can become stressed with changes such as car journeys and unfamiliar cattery stays,” says Sarah. “Having had first-hand experience of stress related conditions, I know how important the small changes can be so I always endeavour to keep to a calm, familiar routine so your cat remains relaxed and content at home. A pet owner herself with 3 cats, 35 year old Sarah is trained in animal first aid and fully insured to care for cats at a client’s home where they are most comfortable. She has focused her personal development in feline care by completing 2 diplomas with distinction in cat behaviour and psychology with C.O.A.P.E, The Association of applied pet behaviourists and trainers. She said, “I understand how precious your pets are to you, mine rule the roost and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I look after every animal as if it were my own and keep in touch with clients throughout the duration of their absence. As long as you and your pets are happy, I am happy. I am enjoying getting to know beautiful Rutland and I’m very excited to take on the challenge of starting a new business doing the job I love”. • For more information please visit www.purrfect-catsitting.co.uk

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help fund vital research. Schools across the UK are being invited to hold their own Race for Life events in aid of the charity. They can choose a day that fits with the term calendar and pick a distance which suits the age and abilities of all pupils. Rachel Carr, head of Race for Life, said: “Race for Life Schools is a fantastic way to have fun, get fit and save lives. Young people today are the generation who could see ground-breaking treatments and cures for cancer in their lifetime. They will be the researchers and lifesavers of tomorrow. But first, we need them to be the fundraisers of today – and walk, jog and run to help beat cancer sooner.” • For more information visit raceforlife.org/schools or call Tel: 0300 123 0770. Where to find the best buy-to-let deals in Rutland? Local buy-to-let property expert, David Crooke, managing director of UPP Property Agents offers tried and tested advice to local property investors and homeowners.

D

AVID understands that buying an investment property is a big decision to make, and to assist you in reaching these decisions he has started writing monthly newsletters and a weekly blog: www.rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk Since the blog was started at the end of last year, there is already an impressive library of topical articles to read as new articles are added weekly. The articles are informative, yet easy to read and his opinion is supported with facts and figures on the local property market – not national trends that don’t reflect what’s happening around here. Proving to be really popular with regular visitors to the blog are David’s weekly list of the ‘3 best buy-to-let deals’ on the market – irrespective of which estate agents it is listed with. Think of it as a kind of ‘Homes Under The Hammer’ Rutland and Stamford style! Over a decade ago, just prior to David starting his own residential lettings and estate agency, he bought his first investment property and became a landlord for the first time. Before taking the plunge into buying his first investment property David said he really struggled to find decent, reliable, local property information; He wanted to know where to buy in the area and where to avoid? What to buy? How many bedrooms? New build or old? He needed answers on rental yields and capital growth. He didn’t know where to begin his research. The ‘Rutland and Stamford Property Blog’ will have something of interest for you, such as whether you’re looking to maximise on your own home to save you from ‘pension oblivion’, or trusted advice for first time buyers, or perhaps discussion on how the new taxation legislation will affect buy-to-let landlords. House buying trends and residential demands across the spectrum of the local property market affects the value and ‘sale-ability’ of your own home, so this blog is a valuable resource and has significance to all Rutland homeowners. If you’ve got friends, family or colleagues looking to relocate to the area, then direct them to the blog. The latest issue of ‘The Rutland and Stamford Property News’ is included within this month’s publication of Rutland Living. If your copy is missing, or if you would like another copy for someone you know who shares your interest in the property market, please call UPP Property Agents on Tel: 01572 725 825 or pop into either of their two offices; 20 Church Street, Oakham or 12 St John Street, Stamford. • For further information call UPP Property Agents on Tel: 01572 725 825 or email David Crooke via David@ upp-property.co.uk.

Pro-rider Bill Levett wins Loomes Championship

T

HE Robert Loomes Championship is the prize for the rider with the optimum time on cross country. The prize is a hand-made British watch from the Loomes workshops. Rockingham International Horse Trials attracted riders from sixteen nations this year, with many still vying for a place in their teams for Rio Olympics. Sir Mark Todd, last year’s winner was very much in evidence, wearing the watch as he flied clear around the show jumping and then wore the watch to do the cross country. In the end the experienced Bill Levett (53) of Australia won the watch. Bill planned his attach carefully. He timed other riders from

the second to last fence until the end. When he came to the second to last fence he was under the time. Bill held his horse Improvise a 16.1 high, 12 year old bay colour gelding, so much that he thought he must in fact be over the time but came in exactly on time. Bill is the first rider to achieve optimum time in the Loomes championship, now in its fourth year. He is hoping to represent Australia at the Rio Olympics this summer. Bill won the Regency Robin watch, a newly released limited edition of fifty stainless steel watches with multi-layered dials and with Arabic numerals that were first popularized in the Regency period (1810s).

Jason Leonard Swaps Packs for Pedals Rugby legend and current President of the Rugby Football Union, Jason Leonard OBE, recently took on the challenge of riding the Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo in support of the ATLAS Foundation. The charity was founded by Leonard, along with other rugby and corporate heavyweights, in 2015 to fund grassroots projects around the world through the power of rugby. Rutland Cycling, Official Retail Partner of the Tour of Cambridgeshire, supported Jason and his peloton by delivering complimentary bike fits and providing demo bikes to riders to train on and ride during the race. Leonard is the most capped player in England’s history, taking to the field on 114 occasions, and was a crucial member of the 2003 Rugby World Cup winning team but the Tour of Cambridgeshire is a whole new ball game for the former Saracens and Harlequins man.

I’m committed to spreading the word to those with hearing problems and letting them know that help is at hand that can make an amazing difference to their lives. That’s why I’m so delighted to be coming to the HearClear Expo.” Johnnie will be joined by Mat Gilbert, Vice President of the England Deaf Rugby Union and former number 8 with the Worcester Warriors, who is the UK’s only profoundly deaf professional rugby union player and high profile Heart Radio breakfast presenter Kev Lawrence. All three will be discussing how they overcame their hearing loss. HUGE thanks to Vicki McDavid for providing the incredible flower arrangement for us at The Rutland Show last month. Many visitors to our stand commented on its effectiveness. Vicki started her new business recently after spending five years in the fashion industry: “When I decided the time was right for a change of career, there was only one option for me – floristry. I was born and raised in Oakham, so naturally I’ve been inspired by the beautiful Rutland countryside and the flora that surrounds us here. A love for the rich colours and textures of nature has shaped my creative vision for Paisley Flower Co.” Vicki studied at the renowned Jane Packer Floristry School in London where she learned the art of creating the beautiful bouquets, large statement floral arrangements and flower crowns that are fast becoming the Paisley Flower Co. signature. Viki continues: “Paisley Flower Co. has already given me opportunities I could only have imagined previously. I’ve just returned from my first RHS Chelsea Flower Show where I provided the creative floral arrangements for the Joules retail stand, and I’m delighted to say the hard work that we put in was rewarded with 3 Stars from the RHS Committee judges. If you’ve got an event coming up that you need flowers for, or just want to find a way to brighten up your home please do get in touch with me; I’m available for a free and relaxed consultation about all of your floral needs.” • Email: vicki@paisleyflower.co.uk or Tel: 07789153383, www.paisleyflower.co.uk

Last call for Oundle Festival tickets There’s still time to buy tickets for the Oundle International Festival, which features music for all tastes between 8-16 July and ends with an all-day Food Festival in the town’s Market Place

MONG those on the Lunchtime Recitals programme is a local girl and previous Festival performer, saxophonist Amy Green. Amy Green On Friday 15 July – in an event sponsored bysister magazine, Nene Living – she’ll be playing both classic and modern pieces. Amy told us: “I’m very excited to be back performing in the Oundle Festival. I went to the concerts when I was younger and remembering really being inspired by them so it’s a delight to be playing here for my second time now! The Festival is brilliant as it brings such a diverse range of music to Oundle and my concert is no exception. I’ll be performing original works for saxophone as well as transcriptions for the instrument. The theme for this year’s Festival is ‘The Voice’ which is rather appropriate as the saxophone is one of the instruments considered to be closest to the human voice! I’ll also be featuring several songs in my concert, including a transcription of VaughanWilliams’ Six Studies in English Folksong, and will be bringing the concert to a close with the fun and feisty Devil’s Rag.” • Visit www.oundlefestival.org.uk or call Tel: 01832 274734 for tickets. “A place to relax and enjoy the stunning views as the superbly landscaped gardens slope gently down onto the shores of Rutland Water”

Welcome to Barnsdale Hall Hotel History

T

HE old hall at Barnsdale was originally constructed in 1890 for the 6th Earl Fitzwilliam as a family hunting lodge. The hall was built on the sheltered south facing slopes of the Vale of Catmose and the Gwash Valley. The geographical position of the hall placed it in the heart of the most prestigious fox hunts in the country, The Quorn, The Belvoir and The Cottesmore, and gave the Earl the opportunity to play host to Royalty, including Edward, the late Duke of Windsor and Mrs Simpson and the cream of England’s aristocracy. It is believed the Barnsdale name was possibly brought from the area of the same name, just north of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire where the Fitzwilliam family had their ancestral estate. During the post war years, the hall fell into disrepair and passed through the hands of a variety of owners. When the twin valleys of the River Gwash were flooded in the mid 1970s to create a reservoir, Rutland Water became Europe’s largest man-made lake and resulted in the creation of extensive nature reserves which attract a large number of endangered species, particularly the Osprey. The 80s and 90s saw the construction and expansion of Barnsdale Hall Hotel, with the main hall and its rich history as its centerpiece. A place to relax and enjoy the stunning views as the superbly landscaped gardens slope gently down onto the shores of Rutland Water, and ponder awhile on those who came before you more than 100 years ago!

Barnsdale Hall Hotel & Spa

With a fantastic indoor pool, spa, tennis courts and 18 hole crazy golf I’m sure most people can find an excuse to stop off here. A selection of A la Carte Food is served in the Brasserie Restaurant with Sunday lunch proving to be very popular. The more informal Lounge Bar serves food all day.

having one too many, then pop your tent up and stay the night! (Camping and Caravan Club only - 07780 721638).

Venture onto Hambleton Island and you have the choice of two pit stops:

Hambleton Hall

This Michelin starred, Relais Chateaux hotel and restaurant, is probably not one for the sweaty, Lycra clad brigade, but if you are walking or driving around Rutland Water and want a very special lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, then this is the place for you. The setting is exquisite with wonderful gardens that run down to the water. Despite its Michelin star and grand appearance it’s not as expensive as you might imagine. Their lunch for less from Monday to Friday is £29 for 2 courses, add a third course for £8.50. This is a place to indulge, and to be indulged.

Finch’s Arms

Situated on the left hand side as you come into Hambleton, this pub has been extended and refurbished in the last few years. It has a wonderful terrace at the rear with plenty of seating and lovely views over the water. No dogs allowed inside or on the terrace. The food is excellent.

Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre @ Egleton

Run by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT) this is a wonderful area at the Oakham end of the water. With ample free parking and a small walk to the centre, it’s a glorious spot for a bit of twitching. Inside the visitor centre is a self-service coffee machine that serves Alterra Coffee, alongside a fridge stacked high with soft drinks and a few pre-packed sandwiches and savoury snacks. There are ice creams for hot and sunny days and a good selection of sweets and crisps. The shop sells some rather lovely bird related gifts. Outside there are a couple of picnic tables and seats to rest weary limbs. The extremely popular Bird Fair is based here from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st August 2016.

The Horse & Jockey Pub @ Manton

Situated directly on the cycle route as you come round the Egleton end of Rutland Water into Manton, this pub has a huge terrace, large car park and a vast number of bike racks. Not surprisingly awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2015, with long opening hours and an excellent pub menu this pub caters for all. The Patio can be hired for private functions and Barbeques. Opposite, lies the Horse & Jockey campsite, so if you are thinking of

Wellies Café @ Rutland Water Garden Nursery This inviting café situated inside The Rutland Water Garden Nursery, opened in February 2015. It seats up to 50 indoors and another 12 or so outside on the terrace. No dogs in the coffee shop but they are happily accommodated within the outside seating area. Ably managed by Alice Manby, with a team of helpful staff, this is a great place to stop on your circuit of Rutland Water. Wellie boot shape table numbers, pot plants in ceramic watering can plant pots and delicious wellie boot shaped butter shortbread served with every hot drink. Their Full English Breakfast has locally reared Hambleton Farm Fine Foods bacon and sausages. The lunch menu offers a daily homemade soup, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and paninis. All their cakes are made on site and they have a good selection with excellent scones. Afternoon Teas are served on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday by reservation only 01572 737059

Lyndon Visitor Centre and Nature Reserve

This little visitor centre is just the start of a magical part of Rutland Water. Situated on the South shore and looking out over the water to the magnificent Burley on the Hill House, standing proudly on the hill opposite. With a small shop, self-service Alterra Coffee machine and cold drinks available, it sets you up for a foray into the nature reserve. Whether you head towards Egleton through the nature reserve or follow the cycle track towards Edith Weston it is a tranquil place and teaming with nature. This has to be one of my favourite spots. Open daily from Easter until the end of August and run by volunteers of LRWT. They also run a programme of nature activities such as badger watching and osprey cruises. www.lrwt.org.uk

L’Oliveto @ Edith Weston

As you enter the car park at Edith Weston you can already smell the delicious garlicky aroma of Italian cooking. L’Oliveto is based just above the fishing tackle shop and has wonderful views over the water; you could almost be on the edge of Lake Como. Serving traditional Italian food they make everything on site, even their bread.

There is an extensive menu that includes Italian classics such as antipasta, pizza, charcoal grilled meats plus a blackboard specials menu offering luxuries such as lobster thermidor and scallops. Open all year round, this is a great venue for a party. Seating 150 people, they allow live music, and weather permitting the doors at the front of the restaurant, leading to the balcony can be flung open. It offers a relaxed and happy atmosphere. The terrace at the entrance and the back of the restaurant are both dog friendly, and complimentary parking is given to those who are dining. 01780 721599

Fardys Ice Cream Van & The View @ Normanton Church

Andy Fardell has based his ice cream van at Rutland Water for a few years now but this year he has persuaded Anglian Water to let him open up a food and drinks concession. The View looks like a retro garden shed, although Andy didn’t like my interpretation of it as a shed, and preferred his own wooden log cabin description! Situated in a great position just up from Normanton Church, and far enough from the car park to make you feel you have earned an ice cream or a cuppa. Also, hot sausage rolls, toasties, sandwiches and cakes. There are lots of picnic tables and individual seats, all with a wonderful view. The ice cream van serves traditional scooped ice cream and for those with intolerances, a locally made goat’s milk ice cream. This is the only ice cream van I know that offers the option of contactless payment and also Apple pay.

Normanton Park Hotel

This impressive looking hotel owned by Best Western, on the South Shore of Rutland Water has loads of outdoor space. A connecting gate leads to Rutland Water, and cycle racks are located just inside this. A children’s climbing frame provides entertainment for the little ones whilst you enjoy a relaxed drink or light lunch. Food is served from 12noon to 5pm with Afternoon Tea available between 3-5pm. Dogs are allowed in both the garden and the lounge areas.

Water for Kids Celebrating 20 Years Water for Kids (WFK) became a registered charity in 1996. Twenty years on the charity raises over £60,000 per year and spends the same amount on projects delivering safe water to communities mainly in Uganda and Zambia. Amander Meade speaks to Trustee Barbara Lucas about what the charity has achieved and lives it has changed during those two decades

Skype contact. Trips are all paid for by the Trustees themselves. In the UK we actively raise awareness and fundraise of course.

How has WFK made a difference?

How did the charity begin? WFK was set up in after two Environmental Health Officers visited Peru as part of a scheme to eradicate cholera. They were concerned that people in small and less formal settlements needed environmental health services in general and safe water in particular. They looked for a charity that was addressing these issues but couldn’t find one so Water for Kids was set up firmly rooted in environmental health. The first project at Quebrada Verde was chosen because it was small enough to be completed by the EHOs themselves if necessary. They felt it was vital that any project that was started should be finished; there were and still are too many halffinished schemes and broken promises in developing countries.

How does your work differ from that of other charities working towards cleaner water?

We work with local Environmental Health Practitioners who know their local communities and their needs very well and by utilising this expertise at little or no cost to the charity; we can provide tailor made solutions and make very effective use of every pound we raise. The three pronged approach is to provide safe water, improve sanitation and carry out health education.

52

52.indd 1

What actually happens to improve outcomes? In all locations we work sustainably. The communities help carry out the work and we set up water committees to manage and look after projects once completed. Health education is a priority in schools and we encourage villagers to build latrines with remarkable success. By making good use of volunteer time both in country and in the UK, we ensure that most (86% on last audited accounts) of our funds gets spent on the ground. We employ an administrator one day per week but everything else is done by the Trustees.

What is the role of the Trustees like you?

WFK has a small group of 6 to 8 volunteer Trustees who make annual visits to Africa to carry out work, check on progress and assess future projects. Local teams carry out ongoing monitoring and testing facilitated by regular

Think of children in hot, crowded classrooms with no access to water for the whole day unless some are despatched to walk a couple of kilometres to fetch water that is not even safe to drink. WFK have set up rainwater harvesting systems and provide maintenance free filters and drinking water stands for each class as well as health clubs and latrines. In larger schools we have provided bore holes which are also used by the community. Imagine having to collect water from muddy pools used by animals as there is no alternative. WFK can protect the water source and create a safe place to collect clean running water. Families spend precious resources on medicines to treat disease caused by poor water so once the water is made safe, that money can be used to send children to school instead. A simple water source may help 400 villagers, a borehole upwards of 800. One of our projects in Zambia has brought clean water to 7,000 people in 7 villages. Each year we take volunteers to Uganda to see our work for themselves. I went on one such trip intending to protect a water source in memory of my brother, a water engineer, who died suddenly. I was so impressed and humbled by the effectiveness on the ground I became a Trustee. Quite simply, WFK changes lives. • To find out more about fundraising for Water for Kids please visit www.waterforkids or www.mydonate.bt.com

Rutland Osprey Project marks 20 years This month sees the 20th anniversary of the Rutland Osprey Project, which has successfully reintroduced ospreys to England following their extinction in the 1840s. I

N 1996 the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Anglian Water, began an ambitious project to translocate ospreys from Scotland to Rutland Water. The bird population had declined dramatically in England in the 19th century due to persecution and egg collection. While ospreys had also become extinct as a breeding bird in Scotland in the early 20th century, a pair naturally recolonised in 1954 and Scotland’s population began to grow. However, due to the ospreys’ strong instinct to return to the area of their birth, the birds were not spreading naturally into England. The Rutland Osprey Project obtained a license from Scottish Natural Heritage to translocate ospreys to Rutland Water and, over a period of six years, 64 ospreys were released at the reservoir. Today, more than a hundred chicks have fledged at Rutland Water thanks to the Project, with eight breeding pairs creating a self-sustaining population, ensuring the longterm survival in England of this magnificent bird.

The generation game

The first osprey to breed in Rutland was a male translocated in 1997, with the glamorous name of 03 (97), taken from the ID on his leg ring. His first chick hatched in 2001, the first from a nest in central England for more than 150 years, so a great achievement. Tim Mackrill, Senior Reserve Officer for the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust at Rutland Water, said, “Sadly 03 hasn’t Tim Mackrill returned this spring, but he bred for 15 seasons between 2001 and 2015. In that time he has raised the amazing total of 32 chicks and is a grandfather and great-grandfather many times over. Several of those birds have since returned to Rutland and are now breeding.” One of them, with the equally minimalist name of 32 (11), was recently spotted by the team in Senegal, one of the winter migration locations of the birds in West Africa. This was a thrilling development for the team, which had been visiting Africa since 2011 to better understand the birds’ global distribution and winter behaviour, as the osprey was not even satellite-tagged. The blue ring on his right leg identified him as a Rutland osprey, since Scottish birds are ringed on the left leg. The African initiative is known as the Ospreys Flyways Project and is supported entirely by fundraising activities. It aims to raise awareness of migration and bird protection through educational activities such as World Osprey Week, when schoolchildren all over the globe can follow satellite-tagged birds and link up to other schools worldwide. Three Rutland ospreys have so far been sighted in Africa, including 03’s daughter, also seen in Senegal, and another female who winters in The Gambia. The birds travel 3,000 miles each way to their wintering grounds and back, usually via the same route and always to the same site.

Cruises and competitions

On 15 July the Project team is hosting a special celebratory osprey cruise aboard the Rutland Belle to mark the 20th anniversary, setting off from Normanton Church. Kayleigh Brookes, Information Officer at the Lyndon centre on the south side of Rutland Water, the HQ of the Project, explained: “This is the exact date 20 years ago that the first osprey chicks were brought from Scotland. The cruise is a great way to see ospreys flying and fishing up close.” Due to high demand the anniversary cruise is already sold out but osprey-spotting cruises are a regular part of the events calendar, running each year from late May until the end of August. The Osprey Project also has an active education team that organises school visits to Lyndon as well as performing assemblies in local schools. To mark the anniversary, schoolchildren were invited to submit osprey-inspired poems, short stories, artwork and scientific studies to an Osprey Festival competition.

Hatching plans

At the Lyndon and Egleton centres, visitors can look out for birdlife from a network of trails, hides and telescopes. Although seven of the eight osprey nest sites are on private land hidden from public sight, there are fantastic views from Lyndon of a pair nesting in Manton Bay. The nest is only 250m from the Waderscrape and Shallow Water hides, a short walk from the centre. There’s also a live stream from the webcam, visible at the centre or from the comfort of your own home at www.ospreys.org.uk. As I was writing this in breezy mid-May, a third chick had just hatched and I watched on the webcam as the female, Maya, fussed over the trio (the first two hatched on the same day, much to the Osprey Project team’s delight), keeping them warm with her feathers. Kayleigh had written with palpable excitement on the website that morning: “It was 08.23 and it was perfect timing, as the tiny chick was just in the process of hatching at the very moment I turned on the big screen – it was pushing its way out of the egg, shrugging off the top half of the shell with a little help from Maya. What a fantastic start to the day and a wonderful thing to witness.” These chicks should now be taking their first forays out of the nest, so hotfoot it down to Lyndon with your binoculars!

Osprey life

Ospreys generally lay their eggs in April, which hatch around late May. The birds feed on fish, which they look for by hovering over the water

or scanning it from a perch. When they go for their prey it is a dramatic sight, if you are lucky enough to witness it. With wings swept back, the osprey dives into the water, thrusting its talons forward at the last moment to seize the fish. Ospreys hunt in both salt and fresh water and at Rutland they eat mostly trout and roach. Adult birds are successful about once every four dives but juveniles take many more attempts. The young birds leave the nest after about seven or eight weeks, having been fed pieces of fish, principally by their mother. The nest, also called an eyrie, is a huge pile of sticks lined with bark, moss and grass. At Rutland Water these are set on top of long poles in the water. At about a month old, the fledglings preen and flap their wings until they can lift a short way above the nest, called ‘helicoptering’. Eventually they take their hesitant first flight. “The chicks are adult-sized by seven weeks old, so July and August are the best times to see the birds in flight” said Tim. “Photographers can also get spectacular views of ospreys fishing at nearby River Gwash Trout Farm, as this has become a favoured place for them to fish.” Instead of netting off his trout pools, the farm owner decided to play a pro-active role in the ospreys’ conservation. With the assistance of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, viewing hides have been built to allow photographers to capture the birds in action. The income generated helps to offset the loss of fish, while the 30,000 visitors who come annually to see the birds at Rutland Water provide many benefits to the local economy. Cause for celebration all round.

Visit www.ospreys.org.uk for further information, to see the ospreys on the live webcam or to orde r a copy of Tim’s book, The Rutland Water Ospreys, which charts the history and progress of the Project. Lyndon Visitor Centre (01572 737378) is accessed from the south side of Rutland Water between Manton and Edith Weston and is open daily from March to September. There is an Osprey Family Fun Day on 2 August from 10am to 3pm, featuring activities such as making osprey masks, feeding chicks and catching fish. Entry is £10 per family with no advance booking required. The centre is also looking for volunteers to help monitor the birds and inform visitors at weekends and on bank holidays until September. Blakeney was a commercial seaport until the early 20th century. Now the harbour is silted up, and only small boats can make their way out past Blakeney Point to the sea. Just inland from the harbour is Mariners Hill. This vantage point is believed to be man-made, probably as a lookout point for the harbour. Adjacent to the hill is the old Guildhall with a 14thcentury undercroft.

Flores House

The Grand Old Lady of the High Street Restored Amander Meade discovers more about what is believed to be the oldest building in Oakham

LORES House is situated in the middle of the town’s High Street and has occupied its position since the fourteenth century. Named after its creator, the house was originally built in the mid-1300s by William Flore, Controller of Works at Oakham Castle, and also occupied by his son Roger Flore, a wealthy wool merchant and lawyer who became Speaker of the House of Commons and died in 1427. Much altered over the centuries, in its more recent history Flores House has been divided into a retail outlet with frontage onto the High Street and a separate large private home which has recently been lovingly restored by restoration expert Will Ashmore of Coppice Homes with valued input by David Taylor and Will’s wife Lisa who runs Old Spot Interiors and has overseen the interior details with her expert eye. “We noticed the property was for sale in October 2014,” explains Will. “We love a challenge and I particularly like working on listed properties so we decided to go ahead and buy the place.” Work began with a complete stripping back of the interior which was in need of complete renovation. Will’s team removed all the floors which have been replaced with limecrete finished with limestone flagstones in the kitchen and reclaimed York stone in the hall with the added luxury of underfloor heating – the perfect solution for keeping older houses warm. Flores House has a Grade II listing and it was essential from the start that the renovation be both sympathetic to the building’s proud history and within the regulations imposed by English Heritage. David Trubshaw was the Conservation Officer providing liaison and Will credits him with offering fantastic support and guidance. Throughout the project Will has utilised artisan materials and methods to highlight the historic features of the house. The walls were replastered with horsehair and lime before being

lime washed in Matchstick by Farrow and Ball which provides a wonderful neutral base for any design scheme. Lisa has chosen traditionally styled wall lights, door handles and light switches – lovely details which complement the décor. In the master bedroom the walls are lined with the original beams and the dramatic double height ceiling was discovered under a further ceiling added at a later date, exposing more beams which now create a striking feature. As befits a house of this age, historic elements abound including a carved stone portal, a front door dating back almost three hundred years and a medieval piscina in the hallway that was once the only source of drinking water in Oakham. Externally, the whole roof has been retiled with reclaimed slate and all the exterior plastic has been replaced with traditional cast iron guttering. The hand blown conservation glass and leaded panes for the windows were made to order and the garden has been beautifully landscaped and planted. Will and Lisa say they have thoroughly enjoyed the project although there have been plenty of challenges along the way. “It has been truly fascinating finding out all about the house whilst we have been here. For me the joy is in returning an unloved gem to its former glory. There is so much incredible history here and now the house is ready to welcome in her next phase – the grand old lady is ready to welcome whatever the future brings.” • Flores House is currently on the market through Moores Estate Agency. OUT & ABOUT

Cruising around Rutland Water is a labour of love for skipper Matt

For more than 30 years, the Rutland Belle has carried passengers on leisure trips around Rutland Water. The business behind the boat is a real family affair. Nick Rennie took a trip on the vessel to find out more about the people behind it
