HELLO JANUARY 2025
The Magic of Music
The purpose of our magazine is to help us each get the most out of where we live, especially finding things that inspire us and create joy. And, in a way, nothing gives such undiluted pleasure to so many as live music, be that classical, folk, jazz, rock or pop, or whatever genre tickles your fancy.
Music is our only truly international language; it knows no borders; and it has the power to evoke emotion, conjure up memories and bring people together in a way that almost nothing else can.
This year we are going to redouble our efforts to support music in our communities. We will sponsor a number of music festivals, expand our arts & culture section, and continue our wonderful monthly feature on local musicians by Steve Roberts. And, of course, we will continue to go to lots of concerts ourselves. We really have an amazing array of musical talent in our region.
May music bring much joy and happiness into your life in the year ahead.

THE JANUARY LANDSCAPE
HOW wintry and serene Burghley House looks in this picture as it takes a rest from visitors during the winter months. Whilst the House is now closed until March, Burghley Park makes for a beautiful walk, as long as you are well wrapped up. Check out our suggested walk on page 92. From Friday 10 January, The Orangery restaurant at Burghley will be open again on selected days for a hot drink and a bite to eat. And what happens to the deer herd during the winter months? They graze the park for most of the year, and their diet is supplemented with deer nuts and sugar beet throughout the winter months to maintain their health and encourage healthy fawn growth.

TALK
WHAT’S ON
The Arts Society Oakham Lecture at The Victoria Hall in Oakham: Timothy Walker – The Subtle Science and Exact Art of Colour in English Garden Design 11am with coffee from 10.30am, £5 for guests
In 1882 Gertrude Jekyll wrote a short but seminal article in The Garden in which she urged the readers to ‘remember that in a garden we are painting a picture.’ As an accomplished watercolour artist, Miss Jekyll was familiar with the principles of using colours, but she felt that in gardens these principles ‘had been greatly neglected’. This talk looks at how to apply these principles to designing a border, as well as the ways in which a border is different from a painting. It also considers how art evolved in parallel with ideas about what a garden or border should show. theartssocietyoakham.org.uk

Interiors New Year Refresh
WORDS: ALLY JOHNSON OF ALEXANDRA JOHNSON INTERIOR DESIGN
HELLO 2025, and welcome all to my little slice of interiors escapism! Each season, I hope to inspire your creative sides and gently push some boundaries, as well as share a few tips and insights from my 11+ years in the industry. And if none of those works, I’ll let you in on my own decorative adventures in my slightly mad household with 3 energetic, messy boys, Felix (4), Ted (9) and Andy (40-something), and hopefully provide a few giggles along the way.
So, how do we all feel about January, honestly? Are you leaping headfirst into the New Year with all the enthusiasm of a golden retriever into the Welland, or begrudgingly shuffling into it with hands in pockets and a long list of ‘probably-maybe-should’ resolutions?
‘It’s as if the house has shed its layers of woolly winter warmth and is left shivering in just its socks’
I love Christmas, but once St Nick has hung up his fur-trimmed trousers, the thought of ‘undecking’ the halls and peeling off my home’s sparkly party dress comes with mixed feelings… On the one hand it’s immensely satisfying to vacuum up those last pine needles (though let’s be honest, we’ll still be finding rogue ones under the sofa in June). And, of course, we all breathe a sigh of relief when the kids return to school and the endless sibling squabbles and snack demands finally ease. They don’t call them the ‘January blues’ for nothing.
Extricating oneself from a haze of cheese, wine and chocolate is disconcerting enough, but once all decorative traces of plentiful holiday cheer are back in the attic, I personally always feel, well, a
bit bereft… It’s as if the house has shed its layers of woolly winter warmth and is left shivering in just its socks. At times like this, we all need a boost to catapult us into the New Year. So, if you are feeling as eager as a sloth on a treadmill this January, we’re in it together, and I’ve got the perfect remedy: a New Year Home Refresh.
Join the Evolution Revolution
I’m often asked to define my interior design style, and while there’s no simple answer, the words I return to are timeless and joyful. For me, interior design shouldn’t be confined to following trends or staunchly sticking to one style; It’s far more than just arranging furniture and picking colours; it’s the art of creating spaces that balance beauty, functionality and personal expression. I love mixing eras, patterns and colours like an old family recipe – a hint of classic, refined English charm here, a pinch of sleek mid-century there and a dash of eclectic fun for good measure.
With a solid foundation, these are spaces that grow with you, rather than growing stale; they are easy to refresh and evolve whenever the mood strikes. Even the smallest of tweaks can rekindle your connection to your home and bring back everyday moments of pure contentment. This warm, fuzzy feeling of ‘at oneness’ (that the Danes helpfully label ‘hygge’) is what I aim to create in my own home and every project I take on. After all, our homes are where we nurture connections, create memories and find refuge from the world – they deserve a little TLC.
Over the coming months, I’ll share plenty of tips and ideas to inspire your own personal version of hygge. This January, why not rebel against the misty murkiness of mid-winter and transform your home into a canvas of joy and comfort? Embrace rich, exuberant jewel tones to carry a little festive spirit into the new year and fall back in love with your space in 2025.
THE POWER OF PANELLING
You may hear design purists or social media trend-chasers claiming panelling is over, but don’t be swayed. This architectural element has been around for centuries, adding depth and elegance to interiors long before TikTok made it trendy.
For me, panelling is far from a fleeting fad. It is a versatile and timeless design tool to elevate a space, add texture and infuse character. It is also a great way to colourblock, if you want to introduce deeper or brighter tones without going the whole hog. Best of all, there are options for every budget, from affordable DIY kits to bespoke joinery by local craftsmen.
ABOVE: Our most recent DIY project was adding two types of panelling to our kitchen, mostly courtesy of long-suffering but handy (and, thankfully, good-humoured) hubby, Andy. Half-height Shaker panelling now dresses up a previously unloved wall, giving the space fresh focus, and visually defining the kitchen area while practically concealing mucky little fingerprints. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s warm Sudbury Yellow, it brings a lively, inviting touch without overwhelming the room. This draws the eye to the far end, where horizontal limewashed reclaimed pine boards add an injection of natural texture and a subtle yet grounding focal point, creating a lovely connection to the outdoors.
LEFT: Faithful neutral or monotone lovers can also use panelling to add interest without the colour, as seen in this bedroom with its elegant, beautifully calm white backdrop.

Soft Furnishings Revamp Refresh Your Textiles
Soft furnishings and fabrics are one of the easiest ways to refresh your home and add that well-needed, blues-busting, feel-good factor. There are, of course, numerous options to suit all budgets. Whether you add one or two new
cushions or a new throw, or invest a bit more in a large area rug, you can layer up warmth, texture, pattern and colour to your heart’s content to create a naturally evolved, joyful room. Here are some of my favourite top tips and local picks.
THREE LOCAL PICKS
1. Milan clover wool throw by Bronte by Moon, Simply Stamford, St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DE, simplystamford.co.uk
2. Cushion by Rutland textile designer Bonnie Kirkwood, bonniekirkwood.com
3. Afghan kilim, The Rug Studio, Brownlow Street, Stamford PE9 2EL, therugstudio.co.uk

RUG RULES
Opt for a generous area rug, large enough to unite all key furniture pieces in the space. For budget-friendly natural texture and a block of neutral to break up the colour, start with a big jute or sisal rug, then layer a kilim or Persian rug on top for a beautifully eclectic, organic finish, as in this colourful sitting room scheme by Ally.
below: mixed textiles in colourful cushions and newly upholstered footstool, tailor-made by sew now stamford (crown lane, tinwell pe9 3uf, sewnow.co.uk), on a backdrop of farrow & ball’s inchyra blue in a recent project by ally.
CUSHION
ETIQUETTE
Avoid the dreaded sad, squashed pancake look. Use feather cushion pads that are a few centimetres larger than your cushion cover to keep them perfectly plumpable.
INSIDER ADVICE
Mixing patterns can feel daunting, but there are failsafe tricks to it!
1. Break it up with plain blocks of colour.
2. Vary the scale. Pair bold, large patterns with smaller, subtle ones.
3. Contrast the styles: ditsy florals can be anchored by bold geometrics.
above & above right: the devil’s in the detail: whether it is frills (like these beauties from hunters interiors, uffington road, stamford pe9 4td, huntersinteriors.co.uk ), piped edges (above right, by sarah harding interiors, 6 market place, uppingham le15 9qh, sarahhardinginteriors.co.uk), or pompoms, those small details and trimmings make a world of difference.

J Wilson Plumbing & Heating Ltd
In the sixth in a series of articles about J Wilson Plumbing & Heating’s expanding client base, Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with founder Justin Wilson to discuss their maintenance and general plumbing business
It’s
twenty years ago this coming spring that J Wilson Plumbing & Heating was founded, and it is now one of the leading plumbing companies in the region. The business has entered all sorts of new areas in that time, notably renewables, but maintenance and general plumbing of course remains a key part of the business too.
Maintenance
The business has a very skilled maintenance dept that will come out at short notice to sort boiler breakdowns, leaky pipes and faulty heating etc. This they do for both homes and businesses. Recently, for example, they were called out to a major commercial premises in Langham to sort a faulty heating system.
General Plumbing
If it is anything involving gas pipes or fittings, then the team all have legally required certifications as standard and undergo rigorous ‘refreshment exercises’ to ensure that they are up to date with new regulations and safety advice.
Bathrooms
Naturally enough J Wilson Plumbing & Heating can sort all your plumbing requirements in the bathroom, which can sometimes be more complex than the rest
of the house due to water pressure issues or soil pipe access. Having an expert to sort a bathroom refurbishment is absolutely vital.
Perhaps less well known is that the business has also become experts in total bathroom refurbishment – so all the fittings, tiles, floor, lighting etc. as well as the plumbing. They are more than happy to take a bathroom through from conception to completion, and in the last year or so they have done many complete bathroom refurbishments, many at the top end where the look and style is as important as functionality.
Whatever your plumbing needs, J Wilson Plumbing & Heating has the expertise and resource to sort it.

Küchen Kraft Kitchens & Bathrooms
Nicholas Rudd-Jones visited Jackie & Vincent to take a look at their beautiful new kitchen recently installed by Küchen Kraft of Oundle
‘Once they come, they come… And if any problems crop up, they talk it through with us and come up with solutions’
VINCENT AND JACKIE live in a beautiful home overlooking the Nene Valley. The large kitchen and dining area enjoys these beautiful views to the full, with large picture windows letting in buckets of light. So they have the perfect space, but they found that the kitchen they had inherited from the previous owners was a little dark and not to their taste, and it was beginning to show its age. They wanted a room that was brighter as well as immaculately laid out ergonomically. ‘Above all, we wanted a nice, bright kitchen,’ Jackie told me, ‘in the Shaker style, with a large island and a light worktop.’ They did get some other quotes to make sure that the package was in the right ballpark pricewise, but they had already used Guy Bolsover, owner of Küchen Kraft of Oundle, for four kitchens and seven bathrooms in previous properties, so Küchen Kraft was always a front runner! It was the expertise and friendliness of Küchen Kraft’s fitting team that swayed them again, although Guy was also competitive on price. Over the many years Jackie and Vincent have known Küchen Kraft, they have got to know and really value the installation team, who have remained remarkably constant in terms of personnel.
ABOUT KÜCHEN KRAFT
Küchen Kraft is a leading supplier of high-quality bathrooms and bespoke fitted kitchens serving our entire region and beyond. If you are looking for a quality modern or traditional kitchen or quality bathroom, then Küchen Kraft should be on your list. A visit to the Oundle showroom is highly recommended, as it’s only when you look in person at the range that you get a really accurate idea of what each product could deliver.
Küchen Kraft is one of only around 200 approved members of the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) in the UK. To achieve this status, a kitchen company is required to undergo regular vetting of their business standards and practices.
The Installation
Jackie and Vincent were pleased to find that they could find a buyer for their old kitchen through Used Kitchen Hub (usedkitchenhub.com), but even better these buyers came and dismantled the old kitchen and took it away. The couple hence had a clean space to start work in and the satisfaction of knowing the old kitchen had sustainably gone to another home. Küchen Kraft then came on site, and the installation took about three weeks. ‘Once they come, they come,’ Vincent reflected. ‘And if any problems crop up, they talk it through with us and come up with solutions.’
New Kitchen
Guy told us: ‘The kitchen is from Caledonia Kitchens, and it is their beautiful handmade kitchen in bespoke colours. When choosing one of their kitchens, irrespective of it being handmade or a standard painted lay-on door, you can choose any colour from their own range of colours or from Farrow & Ball at not extra cost. They also have a unique matching drawer system using the same matching finish as your carcass whilst still using Blum drawers, giving that truly bespoke look at the same cost as a normal Blum drawer system.’
‘We are both absolutely delighted with the result,’ Jackie told me, ‘It looks so light and airy, exactly the effect we wanted to create. ‘Also, everything works very smoothly and is in exactly the right place for the ergonomics of the space – from the twin column of ovens to the floor-to-ceiling fridge and the sink looking out over the garden and valley.’
The finishes are spectacular. The stunningly slim, patterned marble surfaces come from the Midland Stone Centre in Rothwell and really add to the feeling of lightness and space. The lighting has been very carefully thought through, with spots angling down onto every work surface, and three elegant lantern-style pendant lights lighting up the island.
A top-quality outcome for a fabulous space.

moores estate agents
Vernon Moore explains to Amander
Meade how a new UK-wide initiative for 2025 means that Moores Estate Agents is expanding its reach, increasing ambition and bringing together more people and property than ever before
FOUNDED AND LED by Vernon and Jenny Moore, premier estate agency Moores is proud to be an independent, multi-generational family firm. Operating from its spectacular suite of offices on Hackamore Way, in Oakham, Moores is always at the forefront of new ideas to champion the region.
This year Moores has embarked on a new collaborative project that will see its popular Executive Home Search service developed and expanded across the whole of the UK. ‘We have joined forces with 11 like-minded, progressive agents from across the entire UK and together we will offer the finest, most unique homes from each part of the country to the most discerning buyers. The Finest Collection of properties features some of the most desirable homes for sale in the UK, and these can now all be viewed through a specially created website at www.finest.co.uk.’
Moores was handpicked to be involved in this exciting new enterprise, as it is the foremost specialist agency in relocating buyers from London and the South to this region – and in recognition of its highly personal, bespoke approach to both buyers and vendors. ‘The whole idea is to harness the capabilities of the very best agency experts across the UK in order to offer a service to homeowners seeking a unique home.’
The Finest Collection is managed by a dedicated property manager with expertise in matching buyers to homes as well as promoting the properties and regions involved at national level. ‘The opportunity to have your unique home featured in The Finest Collection is available to homeowners across our region and will no doubt elevate vendors’ chances of a swift sale by showcasing their properties to the widest possible audience – particularly if the home is featured in the national press,’ adds Vernon. ‘Especially welcome are the kind of truly unique period and character homes that are plentiful in this region. Vendors will be able to benefit from a lot of free national marketing because of the press and PR links that The Finest Collection has already established.’
Other groups likely to benefit from this bespoke group of properties are parents moving here to take advantage of the superb education opportunities, and those relocating to improve
their lifestyle. ‘Following some brief buyer hesitancy around last year’s election and budget, we are experiencing a huge demand for property in what has been dubbed the new “working from home belt”, as well as the “Notswolds” – a reference to the beauty and high living standards of the region minus the staggering price tag of Oxfordshire.’
Four good reasons not to leave marketing until the spring
• Supply and demand currently being in favour of sellers
• Families getting together over the festive period and making moving plans for the new year
• Online activity being at an all-time high, as buyers decide where they are moving to and start registering with agents
• Parents receiving notifications of school places
Now is the best time to find out the value of your home by having off-market viewings (with reduced fees) and seeing what buyers might actually be willing to pay. If you are considering a sale in 2025 and are unsure of your home’s potential, speak to the team about a no-commitment, no-pressure approach.

Golden Oak
Wealth Management
GOLDEN OAK WEALTH MANAGEMENT is a highly qualified wealth management firm, with over 55 combined years of experience in providing independent financial advice to high-net-worth individuals in and around Stamford, Rutland, Cambridge, London and beyond.
The business has expanded in recent years, and now has a team of 10. This includes the appointment of its newest adviser, Henry Rutherford, who will be working alongside the firm’s esteemed advisers, Henry Metcalf and Daniel Payne, in helping clients to achieve their financial goals. All advisers are chartered individuals in their own right, so you can be sure that the advice you receive is of the highest quality. Critically, they look across the whole of market in terms of product choice, since they are not linked to any one provider.
Henry Metcalf, founder of the business, explained to me: ‘Our clients are at the heart of what we do; we listen to their individual needs, challenges, and aspirations, and tailor our advice to their specific situation. Our aim is to safeguard our clients’ financial future, not only for today but also for generations to come.
‘We are extremely proud of our service standards and treat all our clients fairly, ensuring that they understand the benefits, risks and associated costs of our recommendations.’
Creating a plan
For each client, Golden Oak has a very thorough approach to creating a plan, which comprises four main pillars: tax strategy; cashflow forecasts; investment management; and ongoing reviews. ‘A deeper understanding of our clients’ unique situations allows us to make highly effective recommendations. This ensures that their plans are stress-tested, tax-efficient, and ultimately designed to help them achieve their objectives,’ Henry Metcalf told me.
Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to meet the team at Golden Oak Wealth Management, based in the heart of Stamford
What is on the minds of your clients at the moment?
Henry continued: ‘The question on many people’s minds at the moment is “How do I efficiently move my wealth onto the next generation?” The picture has changed considerably following the latest Budget, which proposes introducing inheritance tax on pension funds passed on after death.
‘The use of trusts and investment bonds are just a couple of specific ways we may be able to help. But above all we are always looking for creative solutions, it’s very much not a case of one size fits all, we tailor our recommendations to the exact needs, risk appetite and aspirations of each client. And, of course, we keep an eye on the annually recurring issues of making sure our clients are using ISA and pension allowances in each tax year, etc.’
‘Our
aim is to safeguard our clients’ financial future, not only for today but also for generations to come’
And small business owners?
‘They are typically keen to find out the best way to remunerate themselves in terms of the mix between salary, dividend and pension contributions (the latter of which are tax deductible),’ noted Henry. ‘They also want to know the best way to pass on a company to their children or grandchildren when the time is right, or how to manage a liquidity event that comes from a sale. All these choices may be several years down the road, but it is beneficial to start planning early, because it gives a client longer to create and then successfully implement a plan.’ contact the team for an initial consultation: willoughby house, 2 broad street, stamford pe9 1pb 01780 723118 | goldenoakwealthmanagement.co.uk
Spaces by Design
A dressing room is the epitome of luxury, giving you space to t ry on outfits and organise your most loved items. Spaces by Design turned this dressing room in Church Langton into a calming space with storage tailored to fit around the owner, right down to the smallest detail
The Brief
This dressing room was large with storage that was sadly lacking. The room had a tall ceiling, and the client wanted full-height furniture to fulfil the potential of the room creating bespoke storage and a vanity dressing table.
The Concept
Spaces by Design can customise their furniture, so they were able to utilise units at 2.7m tall, incorporating pull-down hangers to access upper hanging rails, leaving space at the bottom for shoe drawers. The vanity table needed to feel intended, so it was neatly incorporated into the end of the tall corner unit with an additional dresser added below the window.
For many clients the VR experience helps them understand a space in a way a 3D visual can’t.
The
Visualisation & Installation
There was an option to put the design into a 4D virtual reality world - this technology allows the client to walk
around the space and engage by opening doors and drawers. For many clients the VR experience helps them understand a space in a way a 3D visual can’t. As it was a large, tall room VR gave them a sense of scale and they were able to assess the size of the wardrobes and specify how the interior of each was best utilised.
The Outcome
When entering the room, it’s hard not to be impressed with the scale of the tall single-door wardrobes. A subtle coachline detail in the Super Matt Portobello doors adds the right amount of interest to elevate this design to an extra level of luxury. The Smoked Oak vanity and recessed shelving bleed into the corner units, anchoring it into the overall design.

Creating the wedding of your dreams
Nicholas & Clare Rudd-Jones went to explore Thetford Farm Barn, an exciting new wedding venue in our region
photos: karen catchpole photography
ARRIVING at Thetford Farm Barn is an experience in itself – anticipation builds as we drive up the driveway into the heart of a working arable farm and see the barns and courtyards coming into view. Thetford Farm Barn offers a stunning mix of traditional and contemporary elegance, offering everything you could possibly need for your big day but also allowing you the flexibility and adaptability to make it feel truly yours.
The Barn (Ceremony Hall) & Dining Room
The lovingly restored granary barn – the Ceremony Hall – can accommodate up to 200+ guests and has an impressive 20-metre-long central aisle. It is perfect for that grand entrance. The interior has a warm and intimate setting with exposed original brickwork, an impressive double entrance from the courtyard and a beautiful stone floor. We loved the little details such as the old hay ladder attached to one of the walls. The versatility of the space means it can be customised to reflect the unique tastes and personalities of each couple. Whether for a grand celebration or a cosy, intimate gathering, the barn’s adaptable layout can accommodate various seating arrangements and decorative themes. It’s the perfect setting for the wedding of your dreams and a fabulous backdrop for those inspirational photographs. It’s worth noting that if you would like a church wedding, the beautiful village church of St John the Baptist, Baston, is only a couple of fields away, so you can combine celebrations at Thetford Farm Barn with a church service.
With its original pitched roof, contemporary extension and views onto the Wild Flower Meadow (where you can also choose to exchange your vows), the Dining Room is the perfect place to host your wedding breakfast. It’s a stunning building that leads directly out onto a beautiful stone patio and the Enclosed Courtyard, letting the outside in. For celebrations with 400+ guests, it’s a perfect partnership with marquees and tipi tents, creating a unique, highly versatile space. We ate here at a launch event back in the autumn and can vouch that the Dining Room is wonderfully convivial and has been designed and laid out for a seamless service.
Dressing Room & Hayloft
Thetford Farm Barn also has the most gorgeous Dressing Room, a beautifully decorated, private and tranquil space full of natural light and full-length mirrors – a lovely place to start your wedding preparations. It’s ideal for pre-wedding photographs with your wedding party or a quiet moment of reflection. And, when you are ready, it’s just a few steps to the door that opens onto the aisle of the Ceremony Hall.
And let’s not forget the boys! The Hayloft, with its quintessentially English decor, classic Chesterfield sofas and three-quarter-size snooker table, is just the place to chase away those nerves before saying ‘I do’. This unique space with its bird’s eye view of the barn is the ideal spot to stop and take a moment getting ready. It is also a great place from which to take iconic wedding shots looking down onto the ceremony and the perfect place to pass the wedding baton and throw the bouquet.

Paddy the Cavachon
What happens when circumstances dictate you unexpectedly acquire a dog overnight? Amander Meade explains
IHAD taken my daughter and her partner’s dog Paddy out for walks many times, and he’d stayed with us periodically if they were on holiday – an arrangement that suited all of us. His doting owners could enjoy rare time away from home without concern, and I could indulge in being a very part-time dog guardian, safe in the knowledge that the commitment was short lived. When unavoidable circumstances meant that Paddy’s owners had to spend a lengthy time away from home, of course, I stepped in to help and discovered what it means to become a full-time dog owner – not so much a learning curve but a voyage of discovery and swift adjustment.
The first thing to go was a sense of freedom. There’s no avoiding the fact that as a dog owner, you must prioritise your dog’s needs and plan accordingly. Any time spent away from home had to include a strategy to ensure that Paddy was not left too long on his own and that he had had a good, long walk prior to departure to tire him out so he didn’t fret. Due to my husband’s workload, the vast majority of walking duties have fallen to me. Despite being over nine years old, Paddy looks and behaves like a much younger dog and is a ball of energy, so requires a lot of free running as well as lead walks. I never realised how much time dog owners spend on walking their charges and am not quite sure what I did with that time before Paddy came to stay. Whatever it was, it’s not getting done at the moment. Rain or shine I can be found steadfastly pacing the circular walks of Rutland, keeping a constant eye on the distant white ball of fur blasting blissfully through muddy puddles, diving into hedgerows and digging holes in verges using his snout instead of his paws in an unorthodox and entirely manic manner. I’ve identified areas with no livestock and stick to times when I’m sure we are unlikely to encounter too many other walkers, so that Paddy can run to his heart’s content.
As a medium-sized, predominantly white dog with a love of rolling in unmentionable matter, he frequently requires a post-walk shower and blow dry – sometimes just his legs and undercarriage and sometimes his whole body. White dogs and muddy walks are a difficult combination, which, in winter time, needs action to prevent complete home wrecking. I’ve increased my floor mopping from once or twice a week to four or five and I’ve succumbed to early rising to accommodate a pre-work walk, but at least it means I get to bed early as I’m always tired from all the fresh air. We now have ‘dog towels’, ‘sofa covers’ comprising old blankets to protect the upholstery. All my jacket pockets are filled with dog treats and three dog beds are dotted around the house. My resolute determination that ‘the dog will never go upstairs’ and ‘the dog will never, ever go on the beds’, of course, has gone by the by, and I frequently wake up with a little furry head next to mine on the pillow.
If all of this sounds negative, I should add that Paddy came to stay at a time when I badly needed motivation to move regularly after spinal surgery, and many happy hours walking in beautiful countryside have allowed me time with my own thoughts after a difficult year. I look forward to coming home from work at lunchtime to a rapturous welcome and I’m never alone, as I have my little buddy nearby at all times when I’m cooking, cleaning or working from home. Paddy is adorable, funny, loyal, affectionate and as good as gold. For all his chaos, he has brought fun and focus, he’s stopped me being quite so unnecessarily houseproud and he has given us his heart with unswerving devotion. When he goes home, I shall miss him with all of mine.

InStep Foot Clinic
Enjoy a more active, pain-free 2025 with podiatry and relief from softtissue injuries with Sue Arnold of Wansford-based InStep Foot Clinic
‘This is one of our busiest times, with many people making big lifestyle changes,’ says Sue. ‘But it’s important to start New Year resolutions gently. All too often at this time of year I see people who rush into a new fitness routine only to develop pain and injuries.’
Sue is now offering Shockwave Therapy at the clinic. She explains: ‘This therapy is used on musculoskeletal conditions from plantar fasciitis to tennis elbow and Achilles’ tendinopathy, providing symptomatic relief gradually over a course of five treatments. It utilises low-pressure energy waves to stimulate the blood flow into the part of the body you’re treating, so the body repairs itself. It’s a versatile, drug-free therapy, and I’ve seen really strong outcomes even in clients who have tried other treatments that have proved unsuccessful.
‘We can use the same technology to provide safe, long-lasting and effective facial firming and rejuvenation… it’s tantamount to a non-surgical facelift, achieving results by increasing blood flow, targeting excess tissue and ensuring a corresponding production of collagen.’
Sue established her private clinic, InStep Foot Clinic, in 2001, with a view to providing effective relief from ingrown toenails, corns, calluses, verrucae, diabetic footcare and other conditions that make walking painful or result in unsightly feet. She now also offers cryo-aesthetics, used by podiatrists for treating verrucae but also beneficial when applied to warts, skin tags, milia and liver spots. Ear-wax removal via TympaHealth Microsuction is also available at the clinic.

Q&A
EACH MONTH THE INTERNATIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST AND FOUNDER OF DANIEL SANDLER COSMETICS, WHO IS BASED IN OUR REGION, ANSWERS YOUR BEAUTY AND SKINCARE QUESTIONS. THIS MONTH DANIEL FOCUSES ON HOW TO GET THAT NEW YEAR REFRESH.
Help! Christmas was really busy, and I think I look exhausted. What can I do to look like I’ve been away on holiday? I want to look like I do yoga and eat all the right things!
• Try wearing a tinted moisturiser, as it will give you a kiss of colour and not look like you are wearing any foundation. If you need a little extra help to even out your skin, then use a liquid foundation that is one shade darker than your natural skin tone. A good tip is to mix half of the liquid foundation with your moisturiser to create the same result as a readymade tinted moisturiser.
• To add a glow to your complexion and boost radiance, use a liquid formula of shimmer in a bottle. Apply it on cheekbones and eyelids, down the centre of the nose, and on the centre of your forehead. To avoid looking shiny or greasy, avoid areas such as the upper lip, jawline, chin and around the hairline.
• Mix a little bronzer with your blush, using the same brush, and swirl it onto cheekbones and eyelids.
• Then, on lips, apply a sheer pink gloss or a bluey-pink lipstick to help teeth look brighter and whiter.
• You can apply powder where necessary, but just go easy or you’ll dull that lovely, glowing finish you’ve just created.
Help! I want to update my eye makeup because I’ve used the same colours for years and I’m bored with them. Any suggestions for enhancing my eyes, please, as I want them to look bigger and brighter in 2025?
• If you’re used to wearing warm neutrals such as matte browns and taupes, look for a sheer metallic shadow that you can apply to the inner corner or to the centre of the mobile lid in shades such as soft gold or soft bronze, as they will add brightness and a new twist of colour to your eyeshadow wardrobe.
• If you generally wear cool tones, for example soft greys or soft plums, then layer delicate metallic silver or sheer raspberry tones on top.
• Avoid anything too glittery, as it will enhance lines around your eyes.

WE LOOK AT 3 LOCAL EXPERTS FOCUSED ON HELPING YOU TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE
Lifted
with Health Coach Viv Middlebrook
BEAUTY
Based in Ryhall, Viv Middlebrook is a certified health coach with a Diploma from the Health Coaches Academy. She explains: ‘My mission is to inspire, motivate and support clients in creating unique, long-term healthy eating and lifestyle habits that last. I work with people who want to feel happier and healthier. More energy, less stress, weight and fitness-levels they’re happy with, and a future they can really look forward to. I’ll help you build resilience, so you can deal with whatever challenges life throws at you, empowering you with the confidence to take control of your life, your health, and wellbeing, so you feel lifted to the very best version of yourself.’
Who do you work with, Viv?
‘I work with adults of all ages looking for support in achieving a healthier, more fulfilling, less stressful, more energised lifestyle. If you’re reading this and would like to step into this New Year taking back control and finding a better life balance, I’d love to help you.’
How does it work?
‘We start with a complimentary ‘Discovery Call’ on the phone, during which we talk through where you are and where you’d like to be. The first session includes a 7-Day Food, Mood, and Move Diary review, an evaluation of a client’s life priorities, and some education about healthy lifestyle habits. From this I create a bespoke, highly motivational 8-week programme delivered by Zoom with me acting as dedicated support and accountability partner. After that initial programme, there may be maintenance sessions, but this really depends on each individual client.’
Editor Clare went to meet Viv and notes: ‘Viv’s passion for her work and her love of people are so clear, and she has an infectious energy that totally inspires you to want to make positive lifestyle changes. On top of that, of course, she has all the professional know-how from her training to support you on your journey.’
Viv says: ‘I have a very simple vision, and that’s to see a world where people enjoy a long and happy health span, being kinder to themselves, having more joy and taking control of their health and wellbeing, so they can truly thrive.’

Counselling with Nicky
NICKY WILKINSON offers daytime and evening counselling sessions, both face to face at her therapy room in central Stamford and online. She also offers ‘walk and talk’ counselling sessions. Nicky works with a wide range of issues, including low self confidence, low mood, bereavement, anxiety, stress, trauma, relationship issues and more. She regularly posts on TikTok and Instagram, offering valuable insights into her work and approach. Nicky is a passionate advocate for the need to break the stigma around counselling, which has historically stood in the way of people seeking treatment.
Tell us a little about yourself, Nicky.
‘Before I became a counsellor, my background was in research and development, working in large and small corporates for over two decades. In my early 40s, I had a stressful role at work, and stress turned to anxiety, which turned to near burnout. I sought counselling, and it was such a positive experience for me that I decided I wanted to help other people in the same way it had helped me, so I retrained.’
What is counselling for?
‘Counselling provides a space for people to talk about what they want, with an active listening ear that won’t pass judgement, all in confidence. Counselling is not about giving advice, it is about helping someone to have better understanding of themselves and whatever might be going on for them at this time. Counselling provides people with tools to build up their self-esteem, empowering them to be able to make informed choices and decisions that are right for them.’
Tell us how readers should get in touch, Nicky
‘If this resonates, please do get in touch for a free 20-minute introductory call, giving us the chance to get to know one another and to consider whether you would like to go ahead with a counselling session. (There is no obligation to do so.)
You can book this by email, phone or online at Calendly (via my website and the QR code shown).’

The Chiropractic Hub
BASED AT STAMFORD GARDEN CENTRE in a beautifully renovated dedicated clinic with 4 treatment spaces and 3 private consultation rooms, The Chiropractic Hub is a family wellbeing clinic with 24 years of experience between the team. Leading The Hub are owners and chiropractors Dr John and Dr Sarah, who opened the clinic in Stamford 2 years ago. Working alongside them is Sports Therapist Phoebe, who joined in autumn 2024, and Chiropractic Assistants Sam and Anna.
What kind of conditions can you help with?
‘Chiropractors may be best known for treating back and neck pain, but we are trained in the clinical evaluation and diagnosis of the whole body. Patients come to us for help with headaches, sciatica, tennis elbow and more. It’s worth noting you don’t need to present with any symptoms to reap the benefits of chiropractic care; it can be preventative too. We work in close collaboration with our Sports Therapist to take a holistic approach, looking beyond pain and injuries to address root causes and support overall health.’
Who do you treat?
‘We treat patients of all ages, from babies and children through to teens and adulthood. We love seeing the whole family! We see clients who are pregnant, too, so if you are experiencing pregnancy pains or just want to get your body in the best place for labour, please get in touch. If you have young children, they are welcome to come and read, draw and play in our beautiful children’s area while you enjoy your treatment. We are a family business and understand that it can be difficult to juggle family commitments and self-care!’
One healthy habit you’d recommend this New Year?
‘One thing you can start doing today, especially if you struggle with back pain, is to move your body more. A little bit of movement each day can do wonders for our backs and posture, whether it’s walking, yoga, swimming, cycling or simply just some desk exercise – take a look at our Instagram for demonstrations of some of our favourite ones of these.’
How do we get in touch regarding treatment?
‘You can book appointments online, speak to us on the phone or email us – all our contact details are below.’

Aquilia Acupuncture
Lianne Aquilina tells us more about her work in acupuncture and her healthcare clinic in Stamford
Lianne, What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Anyone suffering from chronic pain, with fertility problems or wishing to improve their emotional health and well being could benefit from acupuncture. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends acupuncture treatment for migraines and chronic pain management. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) established that acupuncture is effective for pain from musculoskeletal conditions, such as knee arthritis. Research investigating 18,000 people diagnosed with neck and lower back pain discovered that acupuncture reduces the severity of pain. Evidence base also demonstrates that acupuncture alongside counselling is a treatment option for people suffering from moderate to severe depression and anxiety.
For the uninitiated, can you tell us more about how acupuncture works?
Acupuncture reduces pain and inflammation. It activates signalling pathways, mediators and receptors to influence health. It balances the fight and flight (sympathetic) and rest and digest (parasympathetic) nervous systems. The parasympathetic system is associated with rest, relaxation, sleep patterns, digestion and tissue healing. Acupuncture can modify the limbic system’s transmissions in the brain that are responsible for dealing with stress and illness. It can stimulate the body to produce its own naturally occurring neurochemicals to relieve pain and have a feel-good effect; these include serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline and endogenous opioids, including endorphins and many more. Acupuncture also regulates our hormones.
Does it involve being covered in needles, and is it painful?
We carefully and safely insert an acupuncture needle into the body’s surface using singleuse, sterile, small, fine needles around 0.16–18mm. Acupuncture is relaxing, and I often have to wake people up, as they have fallen asleep during the treatment! It has been estimated that around 5% of people may find acupuncture very uncomfortable. This is a very small proportion. I suggest you try acupuncture with us. I have needled around 400,000 times and can say these events are not uncomfortable or intolerable for patients. One of my current patients has a phobia of needles and finds acupuncture is ‘totally fine’ –he describes it as ‘different to needles’ and ‘absolutely great!’
What other expert services do you provide at your clinic?
We provide Chinese herbal medicine. Sandra Bird BSc Hons, PGDip of Aquilia provides bespoke plant-based medicine. She is a highly regarded clinician with a clinical teaching background in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Aquilia also offers self-care treatments such as massage using acupressure, mama points and cupping; these sessions are particularly beneficial to combat stress, promote relaxation and reduce muscle aches and tensions. Sandra also offers facial acupuncture to help boost self-esteem and confidence for people during ageing.
How can someone interested in acupuncture find out more and book?
As we are members of the British Acupuncture Council, accredited with the quality mark of the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) that regulates health professions, you can get a GP or Consultant referral or self-refer to the clinic. You can call the number shown right or book online at the Aquilia website, where you can find out more about us.

MORPHEUS8 delivers exceptional, natural looking results, tightening and lifting the skin while boosting its overall health and appearance. A treatment such as EMFACE is groundbreaking in the industry. When you think it’s improving muscle tone, strength and lift in the face and neck –this is essential. It’s the building blocks, the foundation. We understand the importance of muscle strength for our bodies but it’s essential for the face too. We are incredibly proud to have EMFACE in clinic.
Talking of body treatments, we find that many clients are concerned about the effects of ageing on their skin, despite their best efforts.
Non-invasive options like LIPOFIRM PRO and EXION BODY help address common concerns such as loose skin on arms, knees and tummy. These treatments are perfect for anyone wanting to regain confidence, whether it’s feeling comfortable in a short-sleeved top again or combatting that leg wobble as you’re walking!
HOLISTIC HEALTH MEETS INTIMATE WELLNESS
Our approach to aesthetics doesn’t stop at skin care. We offer solutions to improve intimate health for men and women. The EMSELLA chair has provided life-changing results by strengthening pelvic floor muscles. NEW YEAR, NEW REGIME: SAVVY SWAPS WITH BECCA & ALICE
Friends & fellow makeup artists Rebecca Chantrell & Alice Snell share their top tips on how to use swaps! Swapping to save you pennies, to help be less wasteful and to make your products work much harder for you this year!
SWAP FACE WIPES FOR MUSLIN CLOTHS & FLANNELS
HEALTH
Face wipes are convenient and definitely have their place at festivals or on flights, but they can be pretty bad for the environment when not disposed of properly, and they don’t actually do a great job of cleansing the skin. Wipes really aren’t up to the job of removing makeup and daily grime. If you looked under a microscope at the skin, you’d be pretty mortified at how much makeup they leave on the face, and this compromises your skin health. Use your favourite cleanser all over the face and remove it with a lovely warm flannel or muslin cloth instead.
SWAP MICELLAR WATER FOR CLEANSING BALM, CREAM OR MILK
Cleansing waters are lovely to freshen up the skin in the morning after a night’s sleep, but they aren’t effective enough at removing makeup. New advanced formulas in makeup are often developed to be water- and sweat-proof, which makes them hard to budge. A lot of foundations also contain SPF, which is hard to break down and remove. Switch to a cleansing balm, milk or oil, and your skin will thank you for it. They’re designed to melt away and lift makeup off – you will notice a brighter clearer complexion, unclogged pores and fewer breakouts.
These muslin cloths are by Tabitha Eve at Nadinoo in Oakham, where a range of sustainable self-care products are available.
SWAP WARMING PRODUCTS IN YOUR HANDS FOR APPLYING DIRECTLY TO THE FACE
We watch so many people spread creams all over the hands before applying to the face. Try taking it out of the pot or tube and applying in 5 spots around the face then spread it out. This way, more precious cream will go on the skin evenly and less will get soaked into your dry hands. Save your hand cream for that!
SWAP A CUP OF COFFEE FOR GREEN TEA
Green teas are packed with antioxidants and have an anti-microbial effect as well as anti-inflammatory benefits. Research suggests that green tea can help reduce and prevent spots, calm redness and treat many skin conditions. We’re huge believers in working from the inside out when it comes to the skin.
BOOST YOUR BREKKIE
Flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, almonds and many more are all fantastic for the skin, hair and nails. You can buy bags of ready-ground nuts and mixed seeds that are convenient and brilliant for your health. Sprinkle them on porridge, salads and granola, or mix into smoothies. If you boost your breakfast like this, with products that are proven to be rich in Omega-3, Omega-6, vitamin E&B, selenium and good fats, the health of your nails, hair and skin will be super supported over the winter months.
SWAP SPRAY PERFUME FOR SOLID PERFUME OR ROLL-ONS
How much spray perfume goes in the air? Solid perfume and rollerball perfumes are brilliant – there is less waste, they typically use less packaging and are great for travel, plus you avoid leaks and weighty bottles that take up valuable space.

Life Rituals
This New Year, as our thoughts focus on wellbeing, we take a look at Life Rituals, a multi-disciplinary integrative medicine and healthcare clinic on Mill Street in Oakham. Join the team at their first Life Rituals at Fika Talks event of 2025, a fabulous introduction to the clinic for anyone wishing to find out more
ESTABLISHED in 2017 by Jo George, an acupuncturist and herbalist with several decades of experience, Life Rituals provides provides integrative healthcare for all the family under one roof. Here, personalised healthcare plans tackle the root cause of ill health, instead of the ‘sticking plaster’, or symptomsbased, approach. The therapies that Life Rituals offers include acupuncture, counselling, herbal medicine, lymphatic massage, nutritional therapy, osteopathy and reflexology. Specialist areas include hormones and women’s health, gut health, and mental and emotional wellbeing. Children and teens are catered to as well as adults.
Jo told us: ‘What really makes us stand out at Life Rituals is the impressive breadth of clinical experience, the range of therapies and the uniformly high level of education among our practitioners. Sometimes it’s hard for people to know what’s really behind the door at the clinic –the long hours of study involved in our professional development, the extensive experience, the effectiveness of being part of a multi-disciplinary practice. We want to spread the word.’
Life Rituals at Fika Talks
One brilliant way to find out more about Life Rituals and the holistic treatments on offer at the clinic and the practitioners there is to attend one of the events in their Life Rituals at Fika Talks series. These informative evening sessions, which kicked off in spring 2024, provide a wonderful way of discovering more of what Life Rituals is all about.
Editor Clare went along to a talk on the menopause last spring and she was so impressed by medical herbalist Ginny Kemp that she decided to try using herbal medicine with her. Clare says: ‘I was bowled over by how knowledgeable Ginny was at the talk, and hugely impressed by her professional delivery. Ginny has a degree in both Medical Science and Herbal Medicine, so she has the professional knowledge, and she’s also incredibly caring, thorough and patient in her delivery. The Life Rituals clinic itself is beautiful – a really uplifting place to visit. At the time I went to see Ginny, I’d suffered a sudden bereavement and I wanted to find a natural support for that, among other things. My sleep, which had been poor for a while, has vastly improved, and I’m so grateful to Ginny for that, as it has a knock-on effect on many other aspects of life.’
This month the talks start up again, with an evening on 29 January focused on gut health. Book your space now (see right for details), as it is likely to be in high demand.

New Year, New You with Flawless Body
It’s New Year, and the rush of the festive season and the holidays is over. You’ve done everything for everyone else. It’s time to shift the focus onto yourself
photos: tim steele photography
EDITOR Clare caught up with Flawless Body’s Clinic Director Neeta Matharu to chat about how New Year is the perfect time to invest in some ‘me’ time after the hectic lead up to Christmas. Key things she learnt: any treatments work best with a course of at least 6–8 sessions, so plan ahead, work back from your target date and book your course in now! ‘If you start now,’ says Neeta, ‘you can be ready for that special date in your spring/summer calendar. There are some fabulous offers in our January sale at Flawless Body that help to brings the costs down. If you need to, you can talk to us about finance options, too.’
TARGET THE BODY
‘This is a really great time for body contouring,’ says Neeta, ‘but a key thing is to plan ahead.’ She advises working at least 8 weeks back from when you want to reach your goal, whether that’s for a holiday, a wedding or just a target date by when you want to hit your ideal. ‘With body contouring, there are four parts to our treatment plan,’ explains Neeta. ‘These are fat freezing; cavitation; Radio Frequency (RF) skin tightening; and Shockwave lymphatic drainage. All of these, which typically require clients to come into clinic once a week for 8 weeks, work in conjunction with each other for inch loss and to enable our clients to drop a dress size.
‘Now is also a great time of year to start a programme of cellulite reduction using cavitation, RF, Shockwave and Endermologie (a suction handpiece that flushes out toxins),’ advises Neeta.
‘If clients are thinking about finance, we now do payment plans on courses. And in our January sale, we are offering 30% off all treatments (not just courses). We have fabulous deals on products too. The Flawless house brand is the multi-award-winning SkinCeuticals range – if you buy one product, we will give you 10% off; if you buy two or more products, there’s 20% off.’
FACIAL TREATMENTS
And, of course, it’s not just the body that the clinic is expert in treating. They are also expert in facial treatments, whether you’re looking for anti-ageing treatments or to tackle pigmentation or acne. When starting on your skin journey, Neeta recommends a combination of Hydr02Facials, SkinCeutical peels and SkinCeuticals products, which she and her team prescribe bespoke for you following a skin scan with the clinic’s in-house Observ 520 scanner (see picture opposite) to really see what’s going on under the skin.
Neeta notes: ‘In my opinion, to get the best results for your skin, you need to have a combination of injectable treatments such as skin boosters and, especially Profhilo©, polynucleotides, bespoke, targeted Hydr02Facials, micro-needling and Radio Frequency, and SkinCeuticals medical-grade skincare, which is our house brand at Flawless Body. For me, a skin journey needs to incorporate all of these elements – really, it’s non-negotiable. If you’d like to know more, please get in touch to book a free skin scan with me and my team, and we’ll talk through putting a bespoke package together for you. We really look forward to seeing you to give you that fabulous confidence boost this New Year!’

Matt George Head Chef at Paten & Co, in Stamford
‘We want there to be something fun and interesting for everybody’
Q&A with Head Chef Matt
Background
Studied art at Newark College and then became passionate about cooking, a profession that allowed him to combine his three passions: working with his hands, the visual look of things and the ‘chemistry’ of ingredients. Started out in the Prince Rupert pub in 2011, and has been with the Knead Group ever since, becoming Head Chef at Paten & Co in 2021.
How would you describe your style of cooking? I love giving a twist to British classics. So, Shepherds’ Pie, but adding Indian spices. Or Fish & Chips, with the fish marinated in Tandoori spices. I am also fascinated by cooking on fire/barbecue cooking, and was a demo chef at Sizzlefest 2024, the ultimate live fire foodie experience.
Favourite current dish on the menu
Ingredients:
2 skinless chicken breasts
Pre-soaked wooden skewers
Lemon (charred, to garnish)
Fresh coriander
Shawarma Marinade
15ml/1tbsp fresh lemon juice
250g natural yoghurt
25g minced garlic
5g chipotle paste
2g/1tsp turmeric
5g/1tbsp cumin
5g/1tbsp garam masala
2g/1tsp ground cinnamon
Method:
1. Dice the chicken breast into 1-inch sized cubes.
2. Make the marinade by combining all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk until they are thoroughly mixed.
3. Add the diced chicken to the marinade, making sure that all the pieces are coated, then cover and leave in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours. Note that 24 hours is best, as the ingredients will have time to properly infuse and create a brighter colour.
4. Pre-heat your grill to 200ºC or a medium to hot heat if you are using charcoal.
5. Slide the marinated chicken onto pre-soaked wooden skewers and place onto your grill for a few minutes before turning. The marinade will start to brown and should be cooked through to an internal temperature of 75ºC on a digital food probe. Cooking time will be approximately 10 minutes.
6. Garnish with a charred lemon and freshly chopped coriander, and enjoy with a flatbread, mixed salad and a condiment of your choosing. Hot sauces are also a great accompaniment.
Paten’s Chicken Manoushe: Lebanese-style flatbread with spiced chicken breast, Za’atar, tomato, chilli, pickled red onion, crumbled feta and pomegranate with a honey and saffron yogurt, served with salad and spicy batata harra potatoes. I started work on this at home and then introduced it to the menu – it seems to have gone down a storm!
A favourite ingredient?
Wood – sustainably produced, of course. The smoke can add such flavour to a dish. We use oak or whisky barrel wood chunks.
A cooking ‘trick’ to share with readers
Dry brining steak. Salt the steak on both sides the day before and leave on a rack in the fridge. Cook the next day on a high heat, and it should give a fabulous crust to the meat, locking in more moisture.
A bit about Paten & Co
Our menus have been designed to offer the customer a real social and fun experience where you can share a number of small plates (or not!) or opt for a main dish and choose your own array of sides. We want there to be something fun and interesting for everybody! Great craft beers, select wines and specialist cocktails too.

FEN APIARIES
Confession time. As a youngster I was not into honey at all. A true child of the 1980s, I preferred golden syrup on my Ready Brek. Roll forward 40 years, however, and ironically it was a boozy rugby tour that eventually led me to fully appreciate honey and its medicinal benefits when it miraculously cured a stomach problem for me.
Although honey has long been known for its anti-bacterial properties, its health benefits are actually far broader. It is an amazing anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, it contains flavonoids, polyphenols, various vitamins and minerals including iron and zinc, it helps with wound healing and rosacea, and, if all that weren’t enough, studies suggest it can also help reduce cholesterol, combat hay fever and restore gut health. Not bad, hey!
However, as I discovered when I met Grace Evans from Fen Apiaries, where your honey originates from makes a huge difference too. An estimated 70% of honey sold in UK supermarkets now originates from China, where regulations are different, meaning the purity and nutritional value of imported honey can vary greatly. A good reason to shop local.
If you’ve ever visited Stamford Market on a Friday, it is highly likely that at some point you’ve walked past the Fen Apiaries stall usually based just outside Superdrug and seen Grace (aka ‘the honey lady’) selling her homemade range of honey.
Beekeeper, potter, artist and animal rescuer, Grace – who is Peterborough born and bred – is quite literally a very busy bee! It was a childhood fascination with insects and creepy crawlies that led her as an adult to attend a bee-keeping course. Initially, Grace started beekeeping as a hobby with only 10 hives, but her amorous bees enjoyed breeding so much that her hive empire rapidly expanded, and she now has over 100.
On her farm in Baston, Grace produces a wide range of different honeys and related products such as body balms and furniture wax. All of her honey is raw, which basically means it’s not pasteurised or processed in any way and therefore retains more of its nutrients.
Grace sells at least five varieties in total: apple, summer flower, borage, oil seed rape and heather, each with a subtly different consistency, colour and flavour based on the flowers the bees have been foraging on. Her apple honey, for example, is light and zesty, whereas her borage blend is very floral, and her oil seed rape honey has a hard-set, granular texture.
Grace also sells cut comb honey, which is heavenly melted on hot toast, as well as bee pollen, a nutritional powerhouse with a slightly bitter taste perfect for sprinkling on cereal or yoghurt, and bee propolis, made from the resin bees that line their nests with and recommended for sore throats, coughs and flu symptoms.

THE WINE BAR STAMFORD
Snuggled away mid-way down St Paul’s Street in Stamford is The Wine Bar, which was founded 10 years ago by two local friends, Alex Way and Stephen Miskell, who shared a love of wine. Today, I’m meeting manager, James Dodman, to sample The Wine Bar’s non-alcoholic ‘Dry January’ selection. Recognising that for many customers January is a time to give their livers a mini break after the excesses of Christmas, this year the team here have kindly curated a collection of non-alcoholic drink options based on traditional tipples.
The Wine Bar’s non-alcoholic ‘Dry January Range’ includes a Sipsmith 0% dry spirit (a gin alternative); an alcohol-free rhubarb spirit alternative by Clean G; Nozeco, a sparkling drink (a non-alcoholic swap for prosecco); Corona Cero (a zero-alcohol lager); Guinness 0.0 (a non-alcoholic beer); a spiced, alcohol-free rum-flavoured spirit; and an Espresso Rumtini mocktail. To put the range to the test properly a friend and I are doing a blind taste test, trying each non-alcoholic drink and their alcoholic equivalent back-to-back to see how different they are.
Our Tasting
First up we test the dry gin/Sipsmith, the cynic in me was expecting to know immediately which one was alcohol-free. However, with a tonic mixer and a slice of lemon it’s almost impossible to tell, and we get it wrong! Next up is the rhubarb gin/Clean G – my favourite, with pleasing a sweet tarty punch; yet again, the taste difference is so marginal I can’t tell which is the non-alcoholic version. Undeterred, we then move on to the prosecco/Nozeco. This time we did manage to guess the non-alcoholic version, but as a drink I actually preferred the Nozeco, which, with a smoother, sweeter taste, is very refreshing.
James then rolls out the Corona and Guinness, a challenging test, as these are not the drinks of choice of myself or my friend. We recruit the help of a male customer (thank you, Lewis) to do the taste test with us. In both instances there is hardly any detectable difference, so we end up semi-cheating and smelling each drink before we taste them. Amazingly, this is the only thing that gives the game away.
Last, but not least, we sample the cocktails/mocktails and non-alcoholic/alcoholic spirits – my favourite round! We have a very nice spiced rum with pineapple soda first. After much sampling and resampling we are finally able to guess the non-alcoholic drink, although it has to be said that both drinks had a gorgeous sticky-toffee-pudding taste to them. And, finally, the moment we’ve been waiting for… James presents us with one of his legendary Espresso rum-tinis, replacing the traditional Kahlua with spiced rum. We are now in Wine Bar heaven. Again, the difference between the two is so marginal, and I get completely confused as to which is which (probably not helped by all the of drinks we’ve already sampled (hic!).
So, there you have it, a choice of seven alcohol-free tipples to helpfully see you through dry January.

Hegarty at 50
Hegarty reflects on a golden year of community spirit and giving back
FOR local solicitor firm Hegarty, 2024 marked more than just a 50th anniversary milestone. The past year has been a celebration of providing five decades of trusted legal companionship to people across the region. Importantly, it was also an opportunity to say a heartfelt thank-you to the communities that have supported the firm since its foundation in 1974.
Early last year the Hegarty team announced an ambitious goal of completing 50 acts of community kindness (to match its 50 years in business) and pledged to raise £10,000 for four local charities over the 12 months of 2024. The results far exceeded expectations, with the firm hitting its fundraising target early on in the second half of the year. Total monies raised reached over £13,000 by December, and the company also completed numerous community initiatives that touched the lives of people across the region.
A Year of Fundraising Success
At the heart of Hegarty’s fundraising efforts were four local charities: Sports Connections Foundation in Peterborough; MindSpace in Stamford; Pepper’s A Safe Place in Oakham; and Dementia Support in Market Deeping. Through creative and engaging fundraisers such as bake sales, raffles and tombolas – as
well as bigger, more physical challenges – Hegarty employees and community members alike came together to raise funds for these four great local causes.
50 Acts of Kindness
Hegarty’s 50 acts of community kindness throughout the year were all designed to give back to the communities that have supported the firm over the past 50 years. Events included a SHINE charity virtual balloon race to support individuals affected by spina bifida or hydrocephalus, and Hegarty’s sponsorship of Circus Starr ensured disadvantaged and disabled children could enjoy a magical evening under the big top. Hegarty hosted a quiz night for staff, family and friends, and donated essential items to local causes, including food for Peterborough Soup Kitchen, Easter treats for Little Miracles, and pet supplies for Mutts Nutts Rescue. The team also rolled up its sleeves for a litter-picking session in Stamford, where staff collected three bags of waste in just a few hours. ‘Our 50 acts of kindness were a wonderful way to engage with the community,’ said Kally Singh, Senior Partner at Hegarty. ‘It brought our team closer together and allowed us to make a tangible difference, no matter how small the gesture.’
‘At the heart of Hegarty’s fundraising efforts were four local charities: Sports Connections Foundation in Peterborough; MindSpace in Stamford; Pepper’s A Safe Place in Oakham; and Dementia Support in Market Deeping’
Virtual Cycle & Yorkshire Peaks Challenges
In April, Hegarty organised a Virtual Cycle Challenge, aiming to cover 111 miles in just 10 hours – the equivalent distance of a virtual loop connecting the Hegarty offices in Peterborough, Market Deeping, Stamford and Oakham. Team members took turns on the bike throughout the day, reaching the distance target in just 7.5 hours.
But the team didn’t stop there. With the upcoming opening of a new Bourne office, Hegarty participants added the extra distance from Peterborough to Bourne and back, pedaling an incredible 150 miles by the end of the challenge, smashing the original distance goal and raising important funds in the process.
In June, 15 team members took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, a gruelling 24-mile hike with 1,600 metres of ascent, completed in under 12 hours. The route scaled the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, offering breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales. Despite sore feet and sunburn, Team Hegarty was proud to complete the challenge while raising vital funds for the chosen charities.
Supporting Local Events
Hegarty also played a vital role in beloved community traditions, such as the Deepings Christmas Market and the Bourne Christmas Lights Switch-On. At the Lights Switch-On, Hegarty hosted a stall featuring festive crafts for children and a tombola, with proceeds going to the chosen charities. The team also sold Christmas cards in support of Dementia Support South Lincs, further demonstrating the firm’s commitment to helping vulnerable members of the community. ‘These events embody the festive spirit and bring people together,’ said Kally. ‘We’re proud to support them, not only by sponsoring but by actively participating and giving back.’
A Year of Milestones & a Modern Look
The opening of Hegarty’s fifth office – in Bourne – was another significant moment in 2024. This expansion symbolised the company’s commitment to better serving the needs of clients across the region. The grand opening of the Bourne office was celebrated with an Open Day, where local residents and businesses were invited to meet the team, explore the new facilities and learn more about the services Hegarty offers.
In line with its 50th anniversary, Hegarty unveiled a fresh, modern look to symbolise its evolution over the years. The rebrand
balanced innovation with tradition, maintaining the familiarity that clients trust while embracing a contemporary image that reflects the firm’s forward-thinking approach. ‘This rebrand was an opportunity to celebrate our journey while looking to the future,’ said Laura Charnley, Marketing Manager at Hegarty. ‘We’ve grown significantly over the past 50 years, and this fresh new look reflects where we’re headed as a firm.’
One of the standout moments of the year was Hegarty’s 50thanniversary celebration at Peterborough Museum. Over 100 guests attended the event, which featured a timeline of Hegarty’s history, tours of the museum’s historic vaults and heartfelt speeches from senior partners. ‘This event was a chance to reflect on our journey, celebrate our achievements, and thank the people who made it all possible,’ said Kally. ‘From our founder, Richard Hegarty, to our dedicated team and loyal clients, everyone has played a role in making this milestone so special.’
Looking Back – and Ahead to a Bright Future
Hegarty has had a chance to reflect on a year defined by generosity, community spirit and shared purpose. ‘Last year wasn’t just about celebrating the past; it was about building a legacy for the future,’ said Kally. ‘We’re excited to continue growing as a firm and finding new ways to give back to the communities that mean so much to us.’
As the firm looks to 2025 and beyond, its commitment to community remains steadfast. With a new office and team in Bourne and a fresh brand identity, Hegarty is poised for continued success. ‘Thank you to everyone who supported us last year, whether through attending an event, donating to our fundraising efforts, or simply sharing a kind word,’ said Kally. ‘Together, we made 2024 a year to remember – and we’re just getting started. Here’s to the next 50 years.’
Established in 1974, Hegarty has been dedicated to delivering expert legal advice with care and integrity for 50 years. Offering expertise across a wide range of legal services, giving you the legal support you need for business, for family, for life.

Burge Group Ltd
Based in Oakham, the Burge Group Ltd is a full-service building, construction and home improvement company run by local man Ben Burge. All works are covered, including groundwork, bricklaying, plastering, carpentry, electrical and plumbing.
Ben set the business up in 2022 after a high-level career in national construction companies, which has given him bags of experience in managing complex projects and bringing jobs in on time and to budget. Amongst several projects in the region, he was involved in the major Barleythorpe development in Oakham. Latterly, he was Commercial Director at Haddonstone. He started his career as a Royal Corps Signal engineer.
Recent work has included several indoor/outdoor single-storey extensions with lantern skylights, and loft conversions. But the company can tackle everything, be it contemporary or traditional, including one-off complete builds, and will always help with planning building regs and design.
‘We will basically take the hassle out of a build,’ Ben told us. ‘We are very upfront in our customer service – we say what we are going to do and then we deliver it. We always aim to be on time and budget. We have control over the whole build as all our trades are in house, we do not subcontract out, and our team is well known and respected locally.’
Ben has been based in Oakham, where he lives with his family, for 10 years. His hobbies include sailing on Rutland Water and watching his two sons play sport locally.

211 Divorce Support
Jenny Firth spoke to us about a new group that she has helped set up
‘Divorce statistics are baffling, and we are seeing an alarming number of families in turmoil, with many people experiencing desperate loneliness. But society seems to be brushing divorce under the carpet, and there is little help available for those who are in urgent need of support.
‘221 Divorce Support runs self-help groups for the victims of marriage (or long-term partnership) breakdown. The relief of meeting with others who truly understand their anxieties cannot be overstated. We constantly witness the friendship and empathy of our groups carrying people through a time of real crisis. At ‘221’ we know the trauma of divorce; we understand the debilitating loss of confidence caused by rejection, and the overwhelming fear for the future. We see people in early days of separation and those who have been divorced for several years but are still troubled. Our help is immediate and unconditional.
‘There is now a new group starting in Oakham that will provide monthly meetings in a friendly and confidential environment. It is run entirely by volunteers, who have been through a divorce or separation themselves, and we have no professional input and no financial or religious agenda. We meet to offer mutual support and talk.
‘We have an introductory meeting on Friday 7 February (5–7pm) at the Baptist Church, Melton Road, Oakham, and we welcome anyone who is interested, either as a participant or in a supportive, volunteer role.’

Nene School of Dancing
Janina Mossman, founder of the Nene School of Dancing, tells us: ‘Strictly Season has sadly come to an end, it never disappoints, what a wonderful show again! The standard has excelled just when you do not think it can get any better.
‘This month is the perfect time to join our next beginner’s course. We have two classes starting, one in Stamford and one in Peterborough. If you want to learn a new skill with your partner, meet, make new friends, get fitter and have great fun, then this course is for you.
‘The class is an hour long and, in that time, all your concentration will be on learning – the hour will go in a flash!
‘A couple who started last January came back from a cruise and said how much they had enjoyed the cruise, having known how to dance. It made their holiday! Have a go, you may be surprised how good you are!
Please contact Janina Mossman to enrol for the January beginners’ course, either at Peterborough, Parkway Sports and Social Club, Wednesday 15 January, 7.45–8.45pm, or Stamford, United Reformed Church Hall, Thursday 16 January 8–9pm.

WALKS
THREE RESTORATIVE, EASY
NEW YEAR WALKS
Quite often after Christmas, and certainly after the New Year, we need to get some fresh air and restore ourselves physically. But, frankly, one isn’t looking for anything too strenuous, and you really don’t fancy traipsing across muddy fields at this time of year. So this month I have picked three shorter walks that are suitable for a family/friends group of all abilities and are generally firm under foot, with gravelled/tarmacked routes for much of each walk

KEY DATA
Distance 3.3 miles
Typical time 1 hours 20 mins
Start & finish Hambleton Church, Oakham Road, Hambleton Village, LE15 8TL
POINT OF INTEREST
• Normanton Church, which you can see across the water halfway through the walk, is Rutland’s most famous landmark. It was built in 1764 and the classical tower added in the late 1820s. The church was de-consecrated in 1970, as part of the reservoir construction, and an embankment built around it to preserve it.
PIT STOP
• The Finch’s Arms Oakham Road, Hambleton LE15 8TL (01572 756575, finchsarms.co.uk) This pub has everything you could wish for – a warm fire, very snug bar, beautifully stylish dining area and excellent food to suit all appetites.
DIRECTIONS
1
Start from Hambleton Church on the Oakham Road and head down the hill to the shoreline.
2 Follow the shoreline route all the way round the southside of the peninsula, through a big wood, cutting back up eventually towards the road again.
3 At the road, turn left and take it back into the village and the starting point of the walk.
4 If you want to expend more energy, keep following the shoreline cycle track all the way round the northern side of the peninsula – this would create a walk of about 4.2 miles altogether.

POINTS OF INTEREST
• Ha-ha wall – a recessed landscape design element that creates a vertical barrier on one side while preserving an uninterrupted view of the landscape beyond from the house. In the 18th century, Horace Walpole surmised that the name must be derived from the response of ordinary folk on encountering them and that they were ‘then deemed so astonishing, that the common people called them Ha! Has! to express their surprise at finding a sudden and unperceived check to their walk.’
• Burghley’s Lion Bridge was designed by Britain’s most famous landscape designer, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, who masterminded extensive re-landscaping and alterations to Burghley Park and House between 1755 and 1778. The bridge is integral to one of the most-loved vistas of Burghley House.
• The Bottle Lodges at Burghley were built in 1801 to celebrate the Earl’s elevation to the title of 1st Marquess of Exeter. They are based on the surviving lodges for Old Campden Manor, Chipping Campden, built around 1613. They were the original horse & coach entrance from the Great North Road.

Towers of Stamford & Rutland
It was mid-November, and the sky was blue, so Sue Lee and Jean Orpin went on a tower hunt around Rutland and Stamford. Can you match the pictures to the descriptions? The first one is done for you (1a), but the others are in a bit of a muddle
1
Probably the most distinctive landmark in Rutland, this church tower dates from 1826, and the design was based on St John’s, Smith Square, in London. The church is deconsecrated, but it has become an attractive wedding venue.
2
A wealthy 15th-century merchant who had no male heir founded a hospital in 1475 for old people. It became the inspiration for Trollope’s novel ‘The Warden’. In 1870 alterations were made, including the addition of this tower.
3
Stamford was walled possibly as early as 1150, although the walls were often rebuilt, finally in stone with a sentry walk on the interior. There were several bastions (round towers) and gates. The Greyfriars gate and this bastion remain.
4
The Syston to Peterborough railway was initially designed to pass along Bath Row in Stamford, but it was amended to pass south of the river. This little tower is part of the Tudor-style station of 1848, designed by Sancton Wood.
5
The ‘Bishop’s Eye’, probably built by Bishop Russell between 1480 and 1494, is often described as a watchtower. The small upper room originally had windows and cupboards. It may have been an ornamental look-out over his garden.
6
The most difficult of our towers to find! Initially associated with a local water supply scheme of the 1950s, this water tower acquired another use when a local radio transmitter was attached to it in 2017.
7
This entrance to Burghley Park was designed in 1801 by William Daniel Legge, a freeman of Stamford. It was built of Ketton stone. Legge thought the design worthy of exhibiting at the Royal Academy.
8
This building was designed by Edward Browning and constructed in the 1840s as a three-storey house. In 1860 the windows were heightened, then in 1900 another floor was added, and it was renamed the Tower House.
9
This small tower with cupola and weathervane was built around 1800. At one time, it looked down on stabling for 30 horses and coach houses later converted for motor cars. Much of it was demolished by 1940.
10
This large tower house with four corner turrets and cupolas was built in the early 17th century by Thomas Cecil. It had a stable block and a cockpit. It was partially demolished in 1758 and the cupolas were removed in 1862.
11
This church was built in the late 15th century, replacing an earlier one. The tower features in a JMW Turner painting.
The Cecil monuments can be seen in the church, and Daniel Lambert’s grave is in the churchyard.
12
The Victoria Tower cost £200 when it was built. It dates from 1897 and was designed by TG Jackson in a Jacobean style. The statue on the front is of Robert Johnson, Rector of South Luffenham (1574–1625).
13
Called the ‘Great Tower’, this sculpture was designed by Australian artist, ‘Alexander’. Its site, chosen by Dame Sylvia Crowe, was controversial at the time. When it was unveiled in 1980 it was the largest, modern cast-bronze sculpture.
14
This very fine church tower belongs to one of six churches in Rutland dedicated to St Andrew. Built of Barnack stone in the 14th century, it is over 100ft high and is visible from a wide area.

The Vintage Sisters
CASSANDRA, musical director, and writer and teacher of the harmonies; Charlotte, alto and captain of finance; Barbie, alto and sharer of showbiz secrets; Nikky, mezzo and captain of graphic design and marketing; Katie mezzo and bringer of tips from New York’s Broadway; Tracy, mezzo and the one with every song ever recorded stored in her back catalogue; Sarah, mezzo and occasionally secret soprano and always fashion expert; Karen B, soprano and rehearsal organiser; and Karen M, soprano and appliqué expert. This is a roll call of excellence that would, perhaps, be best played in by The Bugle Boy of Company B. They are The Vintage Singers, whose talent is in no way unsung but given out joyously, glamorously and harmoniously with a respectful nod to legendary singers of the past such as The Andrews Sisters.
Cassandra Pattison is a musical theatre mainstay in the region. She has been musical director for many local groups, including Stamford Shoestring, Stamford Showstoppers, Rutland Musical Theatre and Ink Contemporary Theatre. She teaches violin, viola, piano and singing and is music specialist for St Augustine’s and Cottesmore Schools, amongst others. So, Cassandra seemed the natural person to be approached by the theatre at Stamford Corn Exchange and asked to form a choir for a one-off community event just over five years ago. The Vintage Singers were the result, as Cassandra explains: ‘I recruited the team mainly from my own contacts, but our ace sopranos, the two Karens, responded to my advert. After the initial concert, our plans were pretty quickly affected by Covid, but we had had such a brilliant time together and had got on so well that, during lockdown, we decided to keep going and to rehearse on Zoom. It gave us something to look forward to every week.’
This month Steve Roberts introduces us to The Vintage Sisters, who perform classic songs and new hits with a twist
To book The Vintage Singers, go to their Facebook page or email thevintagesingersstamford@gmail.com
The Vintage Singers now rehearse at Ryhall Methodist Hall, and the get-togethers sound a hoot. They are supremely dedicated to their craft, and all the members suggest new songs, which leads to a pretty wide repertoire. Given the inspiration of the music of the 1940s and 1950s, their set list includes staples such as Boogie Woogie, Bugle Boy and Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree. I defy you not to smile broadly through their rendition of When You’re Smiling, and their a cappella version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is simply beautiful. However, The Vintage Singers also perform contemporary songs such as Mamma Mia and My Heart will Go On – inspired by Canadian group PostModern Jukebox, likewise known for transforming modern hits into vintage masterpieces.
The current group is usually 9 or 10 strong, dependent on availability. Indeed, they sometimes out as a trio and, wherever they go, they are, in Cassandra’s proud words, ‘fantastic and glorious’. This is not a vain boast but Cassandra’s honest assessment of the ladies she works with week in week out. I saw The Vintage Singers at Ryhall Village Fête in the summer, and I can’t disagree with Cassandra’s view. I am sure the attendees at Wittering’s Remembrance Day Afternoon Tea event will concur and, by the time this article comes out, I will have seen them again at their Christmas Concert at Stamford’s Trinity Methodist Church.
Most of The Vintage Singers’ 2025 gigs, to date, are private events at weddings, care homes, etc. Cassandra often plays at weddings as a solo artist. They are booked to perform at Stamford’s VE Day celebrations and are regular guests and attendees at the International Bomber Command Centre’s annual ball and social weekend in Lincoln. Keep an eye out for them at local fêtes too and be ready to boogie woogie.
