Festivals – What to Wear! T The festival season is upon us, which means music, madness and making a statement. Emma Church looks at the latest trends so you can party till the sun goes down looking on trend
Top 10 tips Whether you’re there just for the day or half a week you’ll still want to be looking pretty and pampered whilst partying. We all know how festivals work, so practicality is just as important as looking good. Below are a few tips to keep you organised and stay stylish.
• A good pair of sunnies – You don’t have to go all out with the designer shades, just a pair of high street sunglasses are perfect because if you lose them it’s not such a disaster. Also they can really bring a look together and create a cool image. These classic Aviator style shades from Topshop are only £10 • Work those wellies - there is no doubt that the British weather can disappoint, so be very prepared by picking out a pair of wellies. Comfort is just as important as style, so make sure you get a pair that you know you can survive in while standing for hours. These Hunter wellies are £49.60 from £95 at Office if you want to glam up your look with a designer boot. Although there are many other high street stores that stock a cheaper Wellington boot. • Singing in the rain - as well as the wellies you’ll need a rain jacket. The drowned rat look is not what we are going for. Something like this khaki lightweight parker from Primark, £9 will keep you nice and dry. • Tie that hair up – there is nothing worse than having a knotted mane of hair when dancing in the rain so French plaits or a topknot will tidy up your hair. • Dry shampoo – to get rid of those greasy locks, a spray of dry shampoo is all you need and it also gives your hair a boost of volume. • Hats at the ready – from cowboy hats to floppy hats, the miracle of headwear adds a trendy look and also protects you from the sun/
HE beauty of festivals is that you can get away with whatever you want. It’s an occasion that accepts the weird and wonderful so you can combine different wardrobe pieces together and no one will question it. So get those prints and denims all jumbled with splashes of colour and chaos then you are ready to go. To make things easier, I’ve searched the shops in Queensgate, Peterborough and looked online to find the best of what the British high street has to offer. When I was scouting the stores I was not only looking for the festival fashion, I was also paying attention to the stores that offer student discounts as we all like to grab a bargain.
rain. This navy fedora hat I found from Newlook at £9.99 is a must have because the Aztec print just screams out summer and festivals! • Keep it clean - at festivals you can never have too many wet wipes to help stay fresh throughout the day, not to forget tissues either because you can’t always rely on the porta loos. • A chic backpack – You need something to put all your dayto-day essentials in and what better way than a little black backpack from ASOS, £19.99 • To the max - a must have garment for summer in general is a maxi dress, as it is such an easy piece to wear. There’s the classic black bodycon to the bold and colourful, like this patterned number from Newlook. Maxis are so light and comfortable, especially if you purchase one like this with slits along each side that adds more movement and comfort so you can’t go wrong with packing this in your festival bag. • Junk jewellery - as I’ve mentioned the more the merrier is a motto festivals embrace. A great piece for festivals would be long necklaces and chunky bangles. Make sure you leave the precious and pricey pieces at home and go for something like these two pieces from Dorothy Perkins long necklace priced at £10 and the bunch of bangles priced at £12.50.
Fringe Frenzy Fringed garments are also a great look for festivals, from dresses to waistcoats and even bags; they add a little western style, which is a great look for this occasion. Suede syncs well with the fringes and tassels and has been seen in many colours from black to ox blood but the signature shade has to be tan. So unleash your inner cowgirl with a little western inspiration. Here are a few examples to see how you could add some fringes to your look.
Wide Fit Black Tassel shoe: Newlook, £19.99
Tan fringed waistcoat: H&M £19.99 Fringed suede backpack: ASOS £35.00 You don’t need to be going to a festival to enjoy these fashion trends; you can wear them to a family BBQ or even on a day trip. Why not add a bit of summer to your wardrobe with what the latest season has to offer. STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2016

That’s why I’m so delighted to be coming to the HearClear Expo.” Johnnie Walker’s legendary status was formed back in the 60s when he defied the Government to carry on playing music from pirate ship Radio Caroline anchored in the North Sea. Elton John presented him with a special Sony Gold Award for Lifetime Achievement and in 2004 he was awarded an MBE for services to radio. Johnnie will be joined by Mat Gilbert, Vice President of the England Deaf Rugby Union and former number 8 with the Worcester Warriors, who is the UK’s only profoundly deaf professional rugby union player; and high profile Heart Radio breakfast presenter Kev Lawrence. Body solutions at Elysia aesthetics and beauty As beauty treatments have become more sophisticated over time, clients’ expectations have also grown – the latest treatments, using proven technology and products, give impressive results that speak for themselves. We offer the best and most advanced treatments that target problem areas for men and women. BTL EXILIS ELITE represents the world’s most advanced non-surgical technology, treating your FACE and BODY safely and efficiently. Along with the benefit of cellulite reduction, collagen is stimulated and strengthened while loose skin is tightened. THIS IS PERMANENT FAT REDUCTION. Proven by science, tested and confirmed by clinical experts. You can be sure this device will offer the best results. • The only device on the market that delivers monopolar radio frequency and ultrasound energy at the same time to create apoptosis (fat death). FDA approved for permanent fat reduction up to 60% per treated area (the closest competitor offers 40%). • Voted Best Body Contouring Device the last 3 years in a row along with multiple other awards. Also voted Best Skin Tightening Award by My Face My Body Aesthetic Awards in 2015. This technology really will provide ultimate lifting and tightening on facial rejuvenation. The difference between apoptosis and cavitation is huge. Fat freezing is not ideal and it will do nothing to tighten and tone the skin. The treatment is safe, painless, with no downtime. We can treat multiple body areas and prove those problem areas where diet and exercise have failed. We are incredibly proud to be offering such advanced technology. We are committed to delivering the best.
BTL X-WAVE Acoustic wave therapy is an advanced, FDA approved, scientifically proven cellulite treatment. It uses specially modified acoustic wave pulses, which induce vibration within the connective tissue and break down those adhesive fibrous bands in the skin that lead to puckering and dimpling. “With X-WAVEyou can expect reduction in cellulite, no risk or down-time with an excellent satisfaction rate,” says Lisa.
BEFORE

There’s minimal downtime for such a results-driven treatment.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Summer Beauty Genevieve Potter provides the answers to some of summer’s biggest beauty dilemmas
Q: A:
I’m looking for a good alternative to shaving or waxing this summer, but my pain threshold is fairly low – what are my options? The new generation of IPL (intense pulsed light) achieves good results on most skin types, with the exception of very dark skin. It uses light to target and disable hair at the follicle, to give a permanent reduction in hair growth. Samantha and the team at Equilibrium have recently launched the Skinbase IPL system and as Samantha explains, whilst you need to forward plan to fit in the recommended number of treatments, it’s relatively painless: “Most people liken the feeling to being flicked by an elastic band. With our Skinbase system, the special cooling handset applied to the skin prior to treatment provides a chemical-free local anaesthetic effect, making it more comfortable than other laser methods or electrolysis. Our team have received rigorous training, so you’re in very safe hands! “Hair growth happens in three different phases and permanent results are achieved during one particular phase. This means typically a course of 6-10 treatments will be needed to see the best results. Facial hair can also be affected by hormonal imbalances and we advise 10-12 treatments may be required, however we can advise during a one to one consultation.” For further information visit www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk or call 01780 757579 to book in for your consultation and patch test (£25, which is redeemable against any course booked and paid for). Q: A:
How should I adapt my usual ‘cleanse tone and moisturise’ regime whilst away on a summer holiday?
Holiday skin can feel much oilier than usual because of sweat and sunscreen build up. But it’s more important than ever to moisturise, to combat the photo-ageing effect of the sun. Fiona at Renaissance recommends Medik8 vitamin C serum, followed by Hydr8 day cream, which has a sun protection factor of 30. She comments: “Using these two products on holiday, combined with a wide-brimmed hat and staying in the shade as much as possible, really will save your skin in the sun.” At Asembo, the beauty team recommends ESPA Optimal Skin Pro Defence to all of their clients (£35). A blend of plant, marine and aromatherapy actives, it creates an ultra-light and invisible skin shield with an SPF of 15. Unlike many other sunscreens, it doesn’t leave skin feeling chalky or greasy and creates a perfect base for make up.
Q: A:
Is there a supplement that I can take to help prevent sun damage? Yes there is. The Advanced Nutrition Programme’s Skin Defender supplement is perfect for this - formulated with vitamins E and C, along with selenium and zinc which are all antioxidants, helping to protect your cells from oxidative stress. Skin Defender (available from the
Advanced Skin Clinic, priced £37.50 for a 60-day supply), definitely shouldn’t replace a sunscreen, but it does provide useful nutritional support for skin exposed to light – and that can only be a good thing! And remember that hydration is also key to good skin health during the summer months in particular. Aim to drink at least 2 litres of water a day and more if you’re outside exercising.

Q:
I’ve noticed over the years that I have several large ‘freckles’, which seem to be darker every summer, skin creams that promise to brighten aren’t having much of an effect, what are the options for removing them?
A:
A:
Any sort of mole or dark freckle that appears or changes should be checked out by your GP. But assuming, as is likely, that what you’re describing is hyper-pigmentation, there’s no quick fix; but good results can be achieved using advanced electrolysis techniques. It’s imperative to go to a qualified professional like Carolyn Claypole from the Electrolysis and Skincare Studio, who will look at the skin to see if you’re suitable for treatment and advise on what sort of result you can realistically expect. Carolyn can also treat a range of skin imperfections such as skin tags, blood spots, warts and thread veins. She comments: “The skin is the largest organ in the body and starts life as a flawless canvas, free from imperfections. But a number of factors including UV light and environmental and health conditions result in blemishes. Advanced electrolysis is a safe way to remove them, and this is never more important than in the summer when we have more skin on show.” An alternative option is MPL (multi pulsed light) pigmentation treatment at the Advanced Skin Clinic, using a method called ‘Skinfirst’ which targets benign pigmented lesions and imperfections, with a view to partial or complete removal. It’s best to be aware that all of these options will have some ‘down time’ in terms of the skin healing after treatment – so plan ahead for this! Skin will also need to be kept out of the sun and protected with a high SPF once ‘freckles’ or other imperfections have been removed or reduced.
Q: A:
Do I only need sunscreen when it’s sunny or I’m in a hot climate? This is a common misconception but the answer is no - any skin that’s exposed needs sun protection all year round. Sarah from Stamford beauty explains why: “UVA rays are the longest rays and penetrate to the deeper layers of skin all year round, including winter months. UVA rays cause damage to the cellular level, making them responsible for most skin cancers and the main cause of visible ageing in the form of wrinkles, sagging and sun spots. UVA also goes through glass including most car windows and is present on cloudy days as well as sunny days. “Therefore you have to protect daily with a sunscreen that filters both UVA and UVB rays. We are proud to be a Dermalogica salon - a brand that is part of the IDI (International Dermal Institute). Their skin care and sun protection formulations follow strict guidelines to protect skin from over exposure to harmful rays, whilst also allowing users to top up essential Vitamin D that our bodies need for optimum health.” Stamford Beauty is offering customers a summer beach bag or Yoga bag free with the purchase of any two Dermalogica products (one product must contain SPF, available while stocks last).
On previous summer holidays, my hair seems to turn in to a frizzy mess, how can I make sure it looks as good as it usually does at home? It’s definitely worth investing in some TLC for your hair, before, during and after time in the sun. At Gerards, the Aveda color-safe cleanser is a must-have summer shampoo that gently and effectively removes chlorine, salt and product build-up from the hair and is great as a body shampoo as well. The other summer ‘hero’ product is the Aveda intensive after sun cream masque, that restores and moisturises sun-exposed hair and helps defend against free radicals and the damaging effects of the sun. STAMFORD LIVING READER OFFER – mention Stamford Living at the time of booking a cut and style dry during July and August at Gerards and you’ll receive a free in-salon intensive Aveda treatment (subject to availability). And visit the Gerard’s beauty room for an exclusive summer beauty package to get you holiday-ready during July and August 2016, with gel nails, gel toes, eyebrow shape, eyelash tinting and half leg wax for £70 – a saving of £30. Over at Asembo, clients love the Redken Frizz Dismiss range. It’s formulated with a humidity-resist complex, from a blend of Brazilian pracaxi oil and aquatoril to nourish and protect hair. Alternatively, just go with it and create a beachy, tousled look. To achieve this, use the Redken Beach Wave range that boosts texture to create amplified loose waves with amazing body.
Q:
I really want to forget about applying make up whilst I’m away in the sun, but worried that I’ll look half asleep– apart from a fake tan, what can I do?
A:
LVL (length, volume, lift) lashes really do make all the difference, providing a wide-eyed, wide-awake look without the need for mascara. Unlike the application of false individual or strip lashes, the treatment works with your own eyelashes, so you don’t have to worry about re-application (or anything falling off!). The therapist uses a setting serum to straighten your natural lashes right at the root, making them look curled, creating the effect of much longer lashes. The treatment, available at Natalie Dams, takes one hour and 15 minutes and costs £55 (a patch test is required). The effect will last for around six weeks.

Kenneth Richardson
For nine glorious days in July, the Oundle International Festival fills the town with an eclectic mix of entertainment. Sue Dobson talked to its Artistic Director
A
GOOD festival will both reflect and respond to the place and its community, and be broad in its appeal,” says Kenneth Richardson, who knows a thing or two about the subject, having been Director of the world-renowned Covent Garden Festival of Opera and Music for five years, Arts Director of the Chicago Humanities Festival and Director of the yearlong Temple Festival in London. He came to Oundle last year as Artistic Director of the Oundle International Festival and liked the area so much that he moved here. When we met, he was planning to spend the weekend seeking some alpacas for the three acres of land attached to the stunning converted barn he’s bought with husband Garry Glover in a small Northamptonshire village. When it comes to planning the events and booking the musicians, artists and productions for the Festival, Kenneth is not short of ideas or contacts. From his earliest post-university days in the casting department of Scottish Opera – he read French, Russian and Music at St Andrews University – through his years as Company Manager and then General Manager of the Royal Opera, Arts Director of the Barbican Centre in London, Artistic Director of Dublin Grand Opera, consultant to BBC3 and Associate Director of the Greenwich Festival, where he established the Musical Voices Festival, he has myriad enviable connections. His long list of credits as a director of musical theatre includes Carousel and Death in Venice at the Royal Festival Hall, Around with Word with Cole Porter and Puttin’ on the Ritz in Chicago and Oklahoma! for the BBC Proms and BBC2. He’s had a long association with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and will be directing them in Janacek’s The Makropulos Case at the BBC Proms next month. Having built up a fine reputation for directing concert stagings of operas, injecting new life into a lesser-known repertoire and winning a Royal Philharmonic Opera Award along the way, Kenneth is Editorial Director of the website operaworld.net, which he describes as “bringing together opera resources in a structured way, for both opera lovers and newcomers”. A trustee of two

We wanted the Box Office to become an arts hub, a central place where people can come in to buy tickets for one event and discover other things that interest them while they’re there” opera companies, he’s also a scriptwriter and translator – and he creates and designs websites. ARTS HUB Kenneth is involved in all aspects of the Oundle Music Trust, the umbrella that encompasses
the Oundle International Festival and the Food Festival, Music in Quiet Places, Oundle for Organists, Oundle Cinema and the Box Office. “There’s so much going on in Oundle and the surrounding area. We wanted the Box Office at 4 New Street to become an arts hub, a central place where people can come in to buy tickets for one event and discover other things that interest them while they’re there,” he explained. “We’re encouraging more organisations to use us – for example we sell tickets to events at Peterborough Cathedral and this month have tickets for Oundle School concerts, the Battle Proms Picnic Concert at Burghley House, Handel at Boughton, the Oundle Fringe Ceilidh and the Thurning Feast.” For the Music in Quiet Places series, in which talented musicians play in local historic buildings – particularly churches – he looks for a variety of different musical styles. “This spring we’ve had a clavichord concert in Geddington, blues, ragtime and hot jazz in Nassington and a young chamber music quartet playing in Woodnewton.” Variety is important for Oundle Cinema screenings at the Stahl Theatre, too. A member of the film committee, he says: “We aim to get a balance between blockbusters and less well known titles, as well as including one or two of the excellent foreign language films that don’t get shown in the multiplexes. There’s also a documentary strand, shown at Fletton House, which has a dedicated following but not everyone is aware of it, so we’re now incorporating that into the cinema brochure.” As for the Oundle International Festival with its eclectic mix of classical and popular music, theatre, film screenings and partying, Kenneth is urging us all to ‘try something different’ this year and book an event that you might not have considered before. “Chances are you’ll find your eyes and ears opened to a whole new world!” • Tickets for the Oundle International Festival, which runs from 8-16 July, are available from the Box Office, 4 New Street, Oundle PE8 4ED. 01832 274734; www. oundlefestival.org.uk Kenneth and Garry are enjoying settling into their new Nene home – with three acres of land it’s the perfect setting for some unusual pets too!

In the Summertime…
M
IDSUMMERS day is over but we can still hope for some long and sunny weeks ahead. With this in mind, it is always important to think carefully about your animal’s well being during hot weather.
In short: • Always provide the animal with plenty of fresh drinking water. • Keep them in a cool place – for rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets, often a garage is a cool place. Animals do get heat stroke, so make sure they have some degree of shade. You can always transfer them to their run overnight, where they can enjoy grazing in the cool of the evening. But beware of Mr Fox, he may come visiting at night, so make sure your run is very secure before leaving them out. • Clip, strip or trim your animals to keep them cool, if appropriate • Apply sun cream to pink skin as it is very susceptible to burning – Stamford Veterinary Centre sells sun cream wipes for pets. • Be aware that parasites thrive in warm conditions so regular worming and flea treatment is particularly important. Be very vigilant for ticks and fly strike in certain pets as these can cause serious health issues.
THINGS YOU CAN FIND IN STAMFORD THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL IF YOU ARE TAKING YOUR PET ON HOLIDAY: Pets Korner in Stamford Walk have some great things in stock for your pet on holiday – fashion items such as bespoke bandanas and doggie dressing gowns, as well as practical things like Anti-spill travel water bowls and water carriers. They also stock a good range of car harnesses and seat belt attachments.
Have Passport… Will Travel …
I went to meet a couple of dog owners who always go abroad with their dogs:
Freddie is a 9 year old Labrador/ Border Collie Cross, owned by Rosey and Ray Where in Europe have you taken him? We tend to go to France but all over the UK too. How do you travel? We have a 1996 Ford Duetto Camper Van Has Freddie always had a pet passport? We got his passport about 7 years ago and it seemed quite complicated at the time but I think things have got a lot easier these days. Does Freddie have his own suitcase? No he doesn’t but he does have his own cupboard in the campervan! Do you have to take out special insurance when you travel abroad? It all comes under our general Home Insurance Where’s the most exciting place you’ve ever taken Freddie? He seemed to enjoy going on the ferry to the Isle of Wight. Any other advice you can give about travelling with your dog? Always research where you are going and find dog friendly places to eat and places to go - it is amazing how many beaches don’t allow dogs during certain months of the year.
Jess is a 3 year old Boxer owned by Rebecca Knox Ferguson Where in Europe have you taken your dog? We go to France in the summer holidays every year. How do you travel? We go by car and catch the Eurostar Are there any particular things you take on the journey? Besides the obvious - bed, food and water you need to carry a pet passport and to be safe I always carry any vaccination certificates and vets’ documentation. How complicated was it to get a passport? It seemed pretty straightforward. Plan early, and make a visit to the vets to check you have all the correct vaccinations and the animal is chipped. How often do you travel abroad and does your dog get unsettled? She’s been travelling since she was a puppy so she is fine. We make regular stops and make sure we take her to the doggy play area at Eurotunnel. What are the benefits of taking your dog abroad? Firstly you don’t have to pay for kennels. Secondly, they are part of the family. Where’s the most exciting place you’ve ever taken Jess? We took her to a Michelin 1* restaurant in Montrachet once and they cooked her a fillet steak! Any recommendations for others who are thinking about taking their animals abroad? Plan lots of stops. Be careful if it is very hot, as dogs can easily overheat.

Summer Feet
Cosmetic Clinic
A
S summer is fast approaching, most of us have neglected our feet over the winter months, often suffering with dry, cracked heels due to the cold weather they are unsightly when we get our sandals and flip flops out. Hard skin build up can contribute to corns occurring and if these are not removed can become very painful. It is therefore important to maintain the feet to keep them comfortable. Fungal nails look unsightly, thick and discoloured but the condition is treatable. Ladies do like to put nail polish on in the summer but if fungal nail is present, it is important to allow the nails to breathe so either use it as little as possible or not at all A non-asetone nail varnish remover will also help as it is not so harsh on the nails. A verruca is a virus and can be difficult to get rid of and can linger for a long time. We often get them when we are run down. There are many treatments available but it is best to catch them early and start treatment. If lateral pressure is applied to a verruca it will often hurt and it is worth getting them checked out to make sure. • Foot treatments are available by Holly Wright MCFHP MAFHP, Foot Health Practitioner and she provides home visits offering competitive prices. Exilis Elite at Elysia
Bridget Steele writes: “This time of year can make us very conscious of unwanted hair and a hair removal treatment that is painless, permanent and quick is most appealing. “I was invited along to Peterborough Cosmetic Clinic to experience ELASE Laser technology – a treatment that gently heats targeted hair follicles under the skin, weakening them to give permanent hair reduction. I laid on the couch and was given a pair of goggles to wear to protect my eyes from the laser – my treatment was done by specialist Lea Davies, who said I would just feel a slight heat as the laser glided over my legs, and I’d hear a lot of bleeping which she explained was the laser reaching a follicle.” “Lea explained that the treatment is suitable for all parts of the body and skin types – it is a safe, comfortable treatment that produces fantastic and long-lasting results. She suggests that results vary on how many treatments are required, but even after one treatment, three weeks later I am having to look hard to find any hair growth.” • Contact Peterborough Cosmetic Clinic for a free consultation at 325 Dogsthorpe Road, Peterborough. 01733 310090; www.ukcosmeticclinic.co.uk

OTHERINGHAY’S Plantagenet church – which has stood above the banks of the River Nene since the 15th century, and watched over the birth of a future English king and the trial and execution of a Scottish queen – is the scene of an urgent repair project. And it’s all because of damage done by that most essential of elements: water. Oliver Caroe, ‘Quinquennial Inspecting Architect’ to the church – a role which every Anglican parish church is required to appoint, it’s equivalent to being a GP for historic buildings – explains: “Water is life-giving, but is the enemy of buildings. The weather erodes stone, rots timber, corrodes metals – and whilst these processes of decay can be slow and gradual, they can also be dramatic and sometimes dangerous; once things start to slide, there can be quite sudden consequences. The roofs at Fotheringhay are leaking. If we all accept that this is one of the most precious buildings in the county, if not nationally, then there is an urgent imperative to renew the roofs. “We also have water penetrating deep into the tower masonry, which is affecting the hugely significant perpendicular fan-vaulting of the tower. If features like this are damaged, the damage is forever, so we must act.” It’s a sentiment echoed by villager Lady Victoria Leatham, President of the Friends of Fotheringhay Church, who says: “Doing nothing is not an option. We simply must save this important building, and so we have doggedly pursued funding organisations and charitable trusts and now, thankfully, have enough to be able to begin the work.” Despite claiming to be ‘something of a technophobe’, Lady Victoria herself has taken on much of the internet research and correspondence with potential donors, which has returned astounding results. The Friends

Water penetrating deep into the tower masonry could cause irreparable damage; monuments either side of the altar (left) remember Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, and his brother Edmund, Earl of Rutland
have found £1.1m to date, and are hoping to edge even nearer to raising the final £200,000 required through the inaugural Fotheringhay Festival, to be held in the village this month. The repair programme will deliver a new roof, repairs to historic timbers, rainwater disposal and drainage, masonry repairs, glazing and window repairs. In addition, toilet facilities are being installed. Lady Victoria comments: “The church is immensely important because of its historical connections, but it is also a vital part of the
local community. Repairing it is our legacy for the future.” Oliver Caroe concurs: “This church is one of the most rare buildings: Grade 1 listed buildings are just 2.5 per cent of all designated structures in the county. What we mean by listing is that we want this structure to last ‘forever’, so that every succeeding generation can enjoy and benefit from its material, cultural and spiritual significance. Once we have completed this major project, the church will be secured for at least two, if not three generations.”

“A place to relax and enjoy the stunning views as the superbly landscaped gardens slope gently down onto the shores of Rutland Water”
Welcome to Barnsdale Hall Hotel History
T
HE old hall at Barnsdale was originally constructed in 1890 for the 6th Earl Fitzwilliam as a family hunting lodge. The hall was built on the sheltered south facing slopes of the Vale of Catmose and the Gwash Valley. The geographical position of the hall placed it in the heart of the most prestigious fox hunts in the country, The Quorn, The Belvoir and The Cottesmore, and gave the Earl the opportunity to play host to Royalty, including Edward, the late Duke of Windsor and Mrs Simpson and the cream of England’s aristocracy. It is believed the Barnsdale name was possibly brought from the area of the same name, just north of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire where the Fitzwilliam family had their ancestral estate. During the post war years, the hall fell into disrepair and passed through the hands of a variety of owners. When the twin valleys of the River Gwash were flooded in the mid 1970s to create a reservoir, Rutland Water became Europe’s largest man-made lake and resulted in the creation of extensive nature reserves which attract a large number of endangered species, particularly the Osprey. The 80s and 90s saw the construction and expansion of Barnsdale Hall Hotel, with the main hall and its rich history as its centerpiece. A place to relax and enjoy the stunning views as the superbly landscaped gardens slope gently down onto the shores of Rutland Water, and ponder awhile on those who came before you more than 100 years ago!

PROFILE This month, Clare Kelly meets Stamford jeweller Fiona Jones to talk about her work and discovers why dentistry and jewellery making have more in common that you might think!
PRECIOUS METAL
F
IONA Jones has been creating jewellery since 2013 from her pretty little Stamford studio and her pieces are sprinkled like fairy dust across the globe, twinkling for those who wear and cherish them. Her sensitivity as a maker shows in her creations and it’s no surprise that it’s brought some of her customers to tears: “I have seen a few tears, luckily only tears of joy! I was recently sent a video from a lovely couple from Georgia of the exchange of rings during the ceremony; it was lovely of them to share that precious moment with me and I was delighted to help make their day special. I always receive very positive feedback from my customers.” Making people happy comes naturally to her, it seems. But she’s also there when times are tough: “Sentimentally one of my favourite items that I made was a very simple gold band featuring three sky blue Diamonds for a lady in the USA who contacted me at a very difficult time, wanting a ring that she could wear to remind her to stay strong for her husband who was receiving treatment for cancer; the sky blue diamonds were used to symbolise awareness of the condition, it was very touching.” And while spending time in countries such as Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong has been mind-blowing – “the architecture of South Asia has really inspired me” – she’s just as happy in Stamford which she says “has a spell on me, I can’t move away. My workshop isn’t open to the public so you’ll often see me out and about
32
32.indd 1
meeting clients in one of the cafés.” And it’s definitely quite the departure from her previous job as a dental technician at Peterborough Hospital: “My career as a goldsmith jeweller has literally been a dream come true, but has certainly involved a lot of hard work and commitment! I have always been a very creative person and I took a trainee position as a dental technician many years ago and ended up working at Peterborough Hospital up until 2013. The processes used in dental technology are very similar to that of jewellery manufacture. I started playing around and casting shells and making rings and pendants, I started to get itchy feet.” Fate however, intervened and after being made redundant, Fiona used the opportunity to retrain at Holts Academy of Jewellery in London’s famous Hatton Garden, studying for a diploma in jewellery manufacture and design. It was here that she learned the traditional techniques she’d need to start up on her own. Fast forward to 2016 and no day is the same: “Every day is very different, it really depends on what work is on the bench. I will hand carve all of my waxes on the first day and prepare the moulds for the kiln and then cast and finish the following day; the next day I may set stones for the whole day, on some days I may find myself juggling many different handmade processes fulfilling several orders and another time it may take me several days to finish one commission. I often find myself in my workshop until the early hours when I can often have my most creative
moments.” On a visit to the V&A, Fiona was struck by the beauty of a baroque forged gatehouse lock and set about making a new collection to include her Kinetic Ring. “It’s quite symbolic as it was my very first traditional piece,” she says; “it is composed of several layers that turn, symbolising the movement of the lock and the forged mechanisms in the original works. I have since designed a number of other items inspired by the ring which will be available in my shop shortly.” And once it’s in someone else’s hands, her jewellery begins a new life altogether – something she is still enchanted by: “I often wonder where my jewellery will end up as I have made pieces for people all over the world. I have clients bring pieces to me that have been passed through their families for many years; I feel privileged when people talk of their memories and stories and put their trust into me.” And just in case you think we’re getting too deep and meaningful, my parting question is this: who would you most like to design a piece for? She doesn’t have to think too long before replying with a smile: “Tom Hiddleston in a debut of 007 sporting one of my classic gentlemen’s signet rings whilst saving the world!” Tom, if you’re reading this, get in touch. • Find out more at www.fionajonesjewellery. co.uk or follow Fiona on Instagram @ midnightjeweller You can also shop her Etsy shop at: www.etsy.com/shop/uk/Fionajonesjewellery

Future events to support Jack’s journey are:
An update on Jack’s Journey: Antonia Scott speaks to the parents of an incredible little boy Jack Rickard, who has captured the hearts of our local community
‘J
ACK’S Journey’ was launched in January this year to help raise £60,000 needed for a life changing operation and extensive 3 years aftercare that 6 year old Jack Rickard from Barnack will require. Jack has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy and his parents were told that he may never walk, but at 2 years old Jack took his first steps and ever since then, he has been determined to walk by himself. In September 2013, Jack started at Barnack C of E Primary school and although is an independent walker, the tightness in his leg muscles is getting worse which, without treatment, will lead to bone deformities and eventually confine him to a wheelchair. The only thing that will significantly improve Jack’s quality of life is an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) – a procedure that has been carried out in the USA for over 20 years and is now being conducted in selected hospitals in the UK. This life changing operation will permanently reduce the tightness in Jack’s legs so that he will have better walking, balance and control, with no further deformities in his legs and feet. His parents’ endeavour is to keep Jack out of a wheelchair. The NHS are not currently funding SDR in the UK and Great Ormond Street Hospital advised the family to start fundraising themselves while Jack is on the waiting list for the operation. To give Jack the best outcome, he needs to have this operation in the next 2 years. Throughout his 6 years, Jack has never given up, and in April amazed his fellow Barnack pupils by completing a 2.5km Fun Run with his twin sister, Ava and raised an incredible £2,000. Jack is an inspiration and is determined to take on every challenge and his parents now want to do everything they can to help keep Jack on his feet by removing the spasticity in his legs. Since Jack’s Journey was launched, his parents are overwhelmed that to date over £41,000 has been raised through a wide range of fundraising events including a toy sale, a skydive, a race night, a rock ‘n’ roll night, a tractor run, several sponsored bike rides and runs, plus donations from hundreds of local businesses. An incredible £10,000 was raised in a single event at The Wicked Witch in Ryhall. Jack’s operation has now been booked to take place in August, so fundraising events are continuing to help support Jack’s aftercare and ongoing treatment.

UPDATES
Stamford’s ‘Generation Rent’ to grow by 307 households by 2021 This month, our local buy-to-let expert and property investment advisor, David Crooke, managing director of UPP Property Agents, helps to explain whether the reports in many of the national newspapers on the ‘death of buy-to-let’ are vindicated, and crucially, what that means to us here in Stamford?
S
OME commentators are saying buy-to-let is about to die, what with the new stamp duty changes and with the way mortgage tax relief will be calculated. Some say 500,000 rental properties will flood the market nationally in the next 12 months as landlords leave the rental market. According to Sheffield University, buy-to-let landlords will continue fuelling the growth of the private rented sector in the coming decades. By their estimates (and they are considered a ‘centre of excellence’ on the topic), the rate of homeownership nationally will fall to 50% (today it is 66.3% in Stamford) by 2032, while the rate of private sector renting will increase to 35% (interestingly, in Stamford it stands at 16.6% today). Therefore, the demand for rental accommodation in Stamford will grow by 307 households in the next 5 years ... and these are the reasons why, irrespective of the distractions set out in the newspapers:Stamford property values over the last 6 years have risen a lot more than average wages/salaries, and as homeownership and mortgage availability is dependent on a persons’ ability to pay, this has served to push home ownership further out of reach for many, and at a time when the stock of council houses has actually withered. Currently, 3,070 people live in private rented accommodation in Stamford These are big numbers and a sizeable chunk of the electorate. So whilst it appears Stamford’s “Generation Rent” youngsters will continue to rent and to not to buy for the reasons set
40
out above, Stamford’s buy-to-let landlords will be lifted by the projections of greater rental demand. Stamford and its surrounding area still offers the prospect of strong economic growth forecasts and has a reputation as a lively and desirable place to live, and with the new rules on tax, more and more landlords will be looking to move away from the previous honey pot of central London, because its higher prices meant lower rental yields. So, by the year 2021, the number of rental properties in Stamford will rise to 2,111 This prediction in growth of the Stamford rental market is even on the back of the government clamping down on tax reliefs for landlords. Gone are the days of making guaranteed returns on buy-to-let property. Landlords must take a more considered approach to existing and future portfolios, especially in Stamford. The balance of capital growth and yield, especially with current low interest rates, means Stamford landlords need to do more homework to ensure the investment in property gives the desired returns. Start your research off by visiting the Stamford property blog, a free on-line resource offering local property advice and where to find the very latest property deals in and around Stamford, irrespective of which agent is marketing it. www. rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk • If you would like advice on an existing property you already own, or for guidance on what to buy in Stamford and what to avoid, please contact David Crooke, managing director, UPP Property Agents on 01780 484 554 or email: david@upp-property.co.uk
New Lifetime ISA for adults aged under 40 From April 2017 a new lifetime ISA will be available for adults under the age of 40. Kerry Hilliard of Stephenson Smart Chartered Accountants explains how first time buyers and those wishing to save for their retirement can benefit from the account which is designed to allow flexible saving.
I
F you open an account between the ages of 18 and 40, any savings that you put in before your 50th birthday will receive a 25% bonus from the government on top of what you save. You can save as much or as little as you like each month, subject to a maximum of £4,000 per year.
Your savings and bonus can be used towards a deposit on a first home worth up to £450,000 across the country. The lifetime ISA will be limited to one per person - this will allow two first time buyers to both receive a bonus when buying together. If you already have a Help to Buy ISA you will be able to transfer those savings into the Lifetime ISA in 2017, or continue saving into both - however only the bonus from one account can be used to buy a house. If you use the lifetime ISA to save for your retirement, after your 60th birthday you can take all the savings tax-free. Where the funds are withdrawn at any time before you are 60, you will lose the government bonus (and any interest) and will also have to pay a 5% charge. • For more information contact Stephenson Smart Tel: 01733 343275 or visit www. stephensonsmart.com

LOCAL BUSINESS
Young entrepreneurs show ingenuity and grit in Start-up Stamford final Words: Carolyn Morgan
P
RESENTATIONS in the “Dragons Den” final of the Start-up Stamford competition were as slick as anything you might see on TV. Hosted by New College Stamford, a panel of local business people assessed which budding entrepreneur deserved up to £5,000 in seed funding plus business advice and mentoring. Over the last few months, all entrants had received mentoring from local business people, and been coached to prepare a business plan. The four finalists also had to prepare a pitch to the panel. So who were the finalists and what are their plans for the future?
Winner: Dannii Cage, Fit Food, www.fitfooduk.com
D
ANNII started her business making tasty protein bars for sports enthusiasts at home, while holding down a full time job. She has built up to selling 900 bars a month, largely promoted via social media. Her mentor was Will Watson of Tyrrells Crisps, who provided ideas, advice and contacts. “Will helped me aim higher with my business, got quotes from manufacturers, helped with packaging ideas and talked me through putting a P&L together. He has introduced me to other people and given me the confidence to reduce my hours at my job and work at growing my own business”
The Judges said: “Dannii, we loved your enthusiasm, your energy and your drive. To have a full time job and then launch a start-up business is a remarkable achievement. Great to already have a product to sell and a balance sheet that shows early success. You have identified the need to establish the brand in a busy space and improve packaging. You will need to look at manufacturing costs, the margin on each bar and how to retain the ‘homemade’ appeal as the business grows beyond your home kitchen.” Dannii will use the seed capital for production, packaging, advertising & promotion, and an e-commerce enabled website. Start-up Stamford are also setting up an advisory board to support Dannii as she develops her business.

INN is in his A level year at Stamford Endowed Schools and spotted an opportunity to help local businesses use social media to attract more customers, using matched brand advocates to amplify their message. Finn’s mentor was Jim Irvine, and provided tough questioning and motivation to build the business website. “I appreciated the in-depth questions that made me think about my target market, and the discipline of the structured business plan. Although I’m disappointed not to win the cash, the networking and mentoring has been invaluable. I’ve already got several clients lined up for when I finish my exams”
would depend in large part on how well he was able to pitch his services to his target market of business owners. Finn presented extremely well on the night; he came across as credible and knowledgeable showing maturity beyond his years. His logo, branding, colour scheme and a smartphone compatible website all add credibility.”
The Judges said: “When we first read Finn’s business plan, it was obvious that the success of his business idea
Finn is keen to meet with local businesses who would appreciate help with their web and social media marketing.

ISSA saw an opportunity to create a fashionable clothing range for young women who want to dress modestly. With a family background in design and retail, she has already created a range of designs, identified a tailor to make them up, and is keen to start promoting online. Jo-Anne Thompson of The Leprosy Mission was Nissa’s mentor, contacting Nissa each week, asking probing questions about her business plan. Nissa is working alongside her A level studies to save up the capital to build a website and get her first batch of designs made. She would like to hear from organisations that can help her establish her business. The Judges said: “Nissa has a strong passion for her business and an eye for design – she has identified a real need for modest fashion, which goes wider than the Muslim community, and has great support from her family and their networks.”

HIS was an ingenious idea – a plastic credit card style business card that allowed a contact to quickly update contact details on their smartphone. James and Liam were helped by family contacts in the printing industry and aim to target local small businesses. Liam and James’ mentor was Steve Burnett, founder of the Retail Data Partnership. The Judges said: ‘We were impressed by the way the guys had thought about how to adapt an established technology (QR code) for a new application and saw definite merit in a ‘smart’ business card that could import data direct to electronic address books without keying and one which would be easy to update.’ • Start-up Stamford is now in its second year – all its mentors and advisors are local business people who have volunteered their time, and the prize money has been donated by local businesses. Local entrepreneurs aged 16-23 are eligible to enter the 2017 competition. The Start-up Stamford team also welcomes new mentors, advisors and sponsors to contribute time or prize money to encourage local young entrepreneurs. Sweet Peas
Sweet peas are the epitome of summer. They are ornamental, colourful, fragrant, attract insects and are excellent for picking. Sue Lee and Jean Orpin explore their attractions past and present
SWEET PEAS IN THE PAST The first sweet peas in Britain are believed to have come from Sicily in 1699 when a monk, Franciscus Cupani sent some seed. The recipient was Robert Uvedale, a grammar school teacher and horticulturalist, the owner of one of the first hothouses in this country. These seeds produced maroon and purple flowers with a strong scent and continued to be grown without much change for 150 years. It was not until the end of the 19th century that larger ‘grandiflora’ flowers were developed by Henry Eckford, a Scottish gardener who started breeding in the 1870s. He established his own nursery at Wem in Shropshire in 1888. Here he bred many varieties and colours and is credited with establishing the popularity of sweet peas. He became a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and was awarded the Society’s Victoria Medal, the highest honour awarded by the Society. In the early 20thC Eckfords regularly placed this advertisement in the Stamford Mercury. SWEET PEAS – The best 12 Varieties for exhibition, separate and named, 50 seeds of each for 2s 9d post free: the best 20 Varieties, separate and named, 30 seeds of each, for 5s 6d post free. Pamphlet on How to Grow and Show Sweet Peas free with every order. Send for catalogues of over 100 varieties. Illustrated catalogue of Eckford’s Choice Vegetables and Flower Seeds also free on application is HENRY ECKFORD, F.R.H.S., the Sweet Pea Specialities, WEM, Shropshire. Eckford’s Seeds are only genuine direct. No agents. His advertising must have been effective because it was recorded that ‘sweet peas were in great evidence’ at local shows with new varieties being shown including ‘Sophie Eckford’. After Henry Eckford’s death, his son carried on the business making the most of his father’s name continuing to advertise as Henry Eckford F.R.H.S. (Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society). At the Stamford Flower Show in July 1908 there were not only several sweet pea classes but among the Special Prizes awarded was one for sweet peas provided by ‘Henry Eckford’ who had in fact died in 1905. It was won by John Siddall Prior at that time in his mid-thirties and one of the Show Secretaries. He was a pharmaceutical chemist with a shop at 19 High
44
The larger sweet peas bred by Eckford (and others) were called ‘grandiflora’ because the flowers were so much bigger than the original ones; however compared to modern varieties this term is now rather a misnomer. They are still available but labelled ‘Heirloom’ or ‘Heritage’. The term ‘Spencer’ is still in use. St (The White Company). Other local sweet pea enthusiasts were V B Johnstone of Ryhall Hall; and John Clare Billing, an organist and schoolmaster who lived at Milverton House, 6 Empingham Rd. The popularity of sweet peas was further enhanced when a natural cross pollination took place in the garden of Earl Spencer at the turn of the century. Silas Cole, who had followed his father as gardener to Earl Spencer, was growing many of Eckford’s varieties when one of his plants came up with an even larger flower and wavy edges to the petals. This bright pink variety was named ‘Countess Spencer’ and is regarded as the parent of modern sweet peas. Soon Spencer type sweet peas were developed in many colours. A similar flower was developed shortly after by William Unwin who was growing cut flowers for Covent Garden. He called his flower ‘Gladys Unwin’. This led to the establishment of Unwin’s Seed Company, now based in Huntingdon. Locally the growing of sweet peas continued to be popular between the wars. The Grantham Journal in 1922 commented on the advances that had been made. SWEET PEAS A survey of twenty years shows how well the sweet pea specialist deserves of his fellow men, for during that time, not only has the habit and constitution of the race, as a whole gained appreciably in vigour, but the flower has been enhanced in beauty. More wonderful still is the colour range, which has been widened so magically there are now almost as many shades as an expert juggler of dyes could evolve. By the early 1930s Deeping St James had put on its own Sweet Pea Show and numerous brides were choosing sweet peas for their bouquets. W & J Brown, seed merchants of Stamford, considered sweet peas a speciality and advertised the reliability of their seeds.

SWEET PEAS IN THE PRESENT Easton Walled Garden The Cholmeley family have lived in Easton for 14 generations. The family mansion was built in 1592 and partially rebuilt in 1805. The house was badly damaged during the army occupation and too costly to repair so it was pulled down in 1951 and the gardens were abandoned. The restoration of the lost garden was begun in 2001 by Lady Ursula Cholmeley. By then it was overgrown and covered in brambles and weeds. It was a daunting task and is an ongoing project. Essential construction work was necessary before the garden could be created. Over the last decade a cut flower garden, a cottage garden, roses, borders and a woodland walk have been established. Many bulbs have been planted. A snowdrop week is held in February and a sweet pea week in July. Growing Sweet Peas at Easton During these early days annuals were grown until the garden was more established. In 2001 one row of sweet peas was planted and they did so well more and more have been sown. Now there are eight double rows on canes and thirty drums. Over a hundred different varieties are grown including Heritage and Spencers, scented, stripe, flake and bicolour. Every year Steve Marsland, the senior gardener, raises hundreds of sweet peas from seed in the greenhouses. The seeds are sown in root trainers enabling them to be planted out without disturbing the roots. Some seeds are planted in November, overwintered in a cold greenhouse and then planted out in April. Some are sown in the greenhouse in April and planted out in May to extend the season. It is essential to keep cutting the flowers. The seed is harvested in late summer and is for sale all the year round in the shop.
The Pickery Path Sweet Pea Week - July 3rd to 10th 11am to 4pm This is the opportunity to see the different varieties of sweet peas grown at Easton. Gardeners will be there to answer your queries and give advice. The shop will be open and seeds can be bought to plant in the autumn. You can also buy sweet pea products like tablemats, mugs and cards. Easton Walled Garden is to the east of the A1 between Stamford and Grantham. From the A1 take the B6403 slip road to Ancaster and Easton. NG33 5AP STAMFORD HORTICULTURAL SHOW AUGUST 20TH Do you grow sweet peas? ARCHITECTURE
Golden age of cinema George Coles
IMAGES COURTESY OF CINEMA THEATRE ASSOCIATION ARCHIVE
As a relative newcomer to Stamford, Clare Kelly was mesmerised by Central and wanted to find out more
W
HEN I first moved to Stamford a few months back, people began to coo ‘ooh it’s so pretty’ and it ‘looks like the Cotswolds’. In The George one evening over a pint, a fella called Walter pronounced it to be ‘the finest stone town in England’. OK, so the last part isn’t quite true. Sir Walter Scott had moved out long before I arrived. But do you see what I am saying? Everyone knows Stamford is pretty and that it’s got about 600 listed limestone buildings to show off too. What I wasn’t told is that something a little more modern – a classic example of Art Deco architecture – could be found on Broad Street. Curved like the hull of a ship, Central Cinema protrudes proudly into the street. Listen closely and you’ll hear her whisper of tentative first dates, covert hand holding and the glamour of the movie era. Imagine all those people who began their courtships there. Beginning life as the Blackstone Oil Company’s Baroque style warehouse, she was transformed into a cinema in 1926. About 13 years later, there was a fire and she was destroyed. This was the third cinema in the town that was consumed by flames. At the time, the Mercury reported that the fire had been discovered by Mr Boon, a fish fryer who was parking his van nearby. It wasn’t looking good for Stamford’s film lovers and back then, without Netflix, who knows how they amused themselves! Luckily, they didn’t have to wait too long. It reopened in 1938 at a cost of £20,000 with the Henry Fonda film Wings of the Morning – a romantic tale that no doubt inspired a few smooches in the back row of the plush green and gold seats with 600 of them and 192 in the circle, it wasn’t exactly private. The latest incarnation of the cinema and the one we see today was the vision of famed cinema architect George Coles. Now Mr Coles didn’t live here and before the days of the fast train from Peterborough to London, our capital wasn’t exactly round the corner so whether or not he visited is a mystery. Known primarily for his Art Deco designs (The Ritzy in Brixton and The Empire in Leicester Square are another two examples), he was born in 1884 in east London and joined with Percy Henry Adams in 1912 to create beautiful but functional space. The Odeon chain created by Oscar Deutsch was one of their biggest clients. It is rumoured that George Coles lunched in Simpsons-on-the-Strand every day where at that time, I’m sure he could puff away to his heart’s content without being shown the door. Try that today and you’ll likely not be returning. Cigarette in one hand and pen in the other, he managed to find time to design scores of cinemas, many now since demolished, their stories long since forgotten. But working in this inter-war period, his designs had a sense of optimism – they spoke of glamour and decadence. By their very nature, films themselves had the power to transport viewers to another world and so it was with the interior of the cinema. A place to escape. Art Deco was futuristic at a time when levels of optimism in Britain were high. The Second World War was still some way off. In the 1920s and 30s, the nation of bright young things of means rejoiced in all things modern – be it dance, theatre or design. Art Deco inspired them, it was unapologetically bold, sexy and sleek and for those who were not so fortunate, they now had films to lose themselves in. Next time you’re passing walk up Broad Street and look at what George Coles gave to Stamford, close your eyes and you might just hear the giggle of young lovers leaving the pictures or smell the smoke from George Cole’s cigarette wafting by. • Do you remember the cinema? Burghley Cricket Week and Beer Festival July 4 to 8, Burghley Park I
F you love drinking real ale while watching cricket on a sultry summer’s evening then there is no better place to be than the Burghley Cricket Week and Beer Festival. Incredibly, the special week of matches has been held at Burghley Park since 1890 and the everpopular six-a-side tournament for more than half-a-century. In recent years the beer tent has become just as big a draw as the thwack of willow on leather. Club vice-chairman Russ Hibbitt, who is bar manager for cricket week, explained: “The original Cricket Week was a cricket festival with a bar and now it is a beer festival with cricket attached to it. “At my first beer festival in 2001 we had 14 barrels of lager and 14 of real ale. Last year we had 12 barrels of lager and 59 of real ale. I suppose our renaissance has mirrored the renaissance in real ale.” During the day the club plays matches against touring teams, including an Authors XI, a Londonbased side founded in 1902 by such luminaries as PG Wodehouse and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Birdsong writer Sebastian Faulks is a current member of the team. In the evenings, 16 invited clubs from around the area compete for the coveted sixes tournament, which has been won for the last two years by Stamford Town. Last year, 1,200 people converged on the club to watch the sixes finals, stretching resources to the limits for Russ and his team of 25 volunteer helpers. • For more details about Burghley Cricket Week & Beer Festival go online at www.bp.playcricket.com

ITH 42% of children ages 2 to 11 developing a cavity in their primary teeth, The Little Lane Nursery wanted to address the issue early on; laying the groundwork for good oral hygiene for the rest of their life, promoting tooth brushing and how to do it properly, encouraging a healthy lifestyle including the right diet; demystifying the dentist, making it a fun experience and increasing children’s awareness about dental hygiene. The Little Lane Nursery approached Oasis Dental to find out if they could spare some time to speak with some of the pre-school aged children and they were delighted to help. The nursery promotes tooth brushing, with a very cool ‘Brush Bus’ in each room, housing the children’s individual toothbrushes. They also have a giant set of teeth and show the children how to brush their teeth. They brush their teeth after lunch each day; by brushing together, with their friends, the children enjoy brushing and it becomes a normal part of everyday life at nursery Oasis Dental Care commented: “It’s never too early to start thinking about your child’s oral health. Making sure your child cleans their teeth with a soft brush for at least two minutes, twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is the best way to prevent tooth decay. It’s especially important to brush after eating breakfast and before bedtime. It’s also a good idea to encourage your child to simply just spit out the toothpaste rather than rinse out afterwards. And lastly – to remember to keep your child’s intake of sugary foods such as fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolate minimal. Clean teeth are happy teeth!” • Little Lane Nursery, 1 Silver Lane, Stamford PE9 2BT Tel: 01780 752211 www.littlelanenursery.com

Rutland Osprey Project marks 20 years This month sees the 20th anniversary of the Rutland Osprey Project, which has successfully reintroduced ospreys to England following their extinction in the 1840s. N 1996 the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Anglian Water, began an ambitious project to translocate ospreys from Scotland to Rutland Water. The bird population had declined dramatically in England in the 19th century due to persecution and egg collection. While ospreys had also become extinct as a breeding bird in Scotland in the early 20th century, a pair naturally recolonised in 1954 and Scotland’s population began to grow. However, due to the ospreys’ strong instinct to return to the area of their birth, the birds were not spreading naturally into England. The Rutland Osprey Project obtained a license from Scottish Natural Heritage to translocate ospreys to Rutland Water and, over a period of six years, 64 ospreys were released at the reservoir. Today, more than a hundred chicks have fledged at Rutland Water thanks to the Project, with eight breeding pairs creating a self-sustaining population, ensuring the longterm survival in England of this magnificent bird.
The generation game
The first osprey to breed in Rutland was a male translocated in 1997, with the glamorous name of 03 (97), taken from the ID on his leg ring. His first chick hatched in 2001, the first from a nest in central England for more than 150 years, so a great achievement. Tim Mackrill, Senior Reserve Officer for the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust at Rutland Water, said, “Sadly 03 hasn’t Tim Mackrill returned this spring, but he bred for 15 seasons between 2001 and 2015. In that time he has raised the amazing total of 32 chicks and is a grandfather and great-grandfather many times over. Several of those birds have since returned to Rutland and are now breeding.” One of them, with the equally minimalist name of 32 (11), was recently spotted by the team in Senegal, one of the winter migration locations of the birds in West Africa. This was a thrilling development for the team, which had been visiting Africa since 2011 to better understand the birds’ global distribution and winter behaviour, as the osprey was not even satellite-tagged. The blue ring on his right leg identified him as a Rutland osprey, since Scottish birds are ringed on the left leg. The African initiative is known as the Ospreys Flyways Project and is supported entirely by fundraising activities. It aims to raise awareness of migration and bird protection through educational activities such as World Osprey Week, when schoolchildren all over the globe can follow satellite-tagged birds and link up to other schools worldwide. Three Rutland ospreys have so far been sighted in Africa, including 03’s daughter, also seen in Senegal, and another female who winters in The Gambia. The birds travel 3,000 miles each way to their wintering grounds and back, usually via the same route and always to the same site.

Cruises and competitions
On 15 July the Project team is hosting a special celebratory osprey cruise aboard the Rutland Belle to mark the 20th anniversary, setting off from Normanton Church. Kayleigh Brookes, Information Officer at the Lyndon centre on the south side of Rutland Water, the HQ of the Project, explained: “This is the exact date 20 years ago that the first osprey chicks were brought from Scotland. The cruise is a great way to see ospreys flying and fishing up close.” Due to high demand the anniversary cruise is already sold out but osprey-spotting cruises are a regular part of the events calendar, running each year from late May until the end of August. The Osprey Project also has an active education team that organises school visits to Lyndon as well as performing assemblies in local schools. To mark the anniversary, schoolchildren were invited to submit osprey-inspired poems, short stories, artwork and scientific studies to an Osprey Festival competition.
Hatching plans
At the Lyndon and Egleton centres, visitors can look out for birdlife from a network of trails, hides and telescopes. Although seven of the eight osprey nest sites are on private land hidden from public sight, there are fantastic views from Lyndon of a pair nesting in Manton Bay. The nest is only 250m from the Waderscrape and Shallow Water hides, a short walk from the centre. There’s also a live stream from the webcam, visible at the centre or from the comfort of your own home at www.ospreys.org.uk. As I was writing this in breezy mid-May, a third chick had just hatched and I watched on the webcam as the female, Maya, fussed over the trio (the first two hatched on the same day, much to the Osprey Project team’s delight), keeping them warm with her feathers. Kayleigh had written with palpable excitement on the website that morning: “It was 08.23 and it was perfect timing, as the tiny chick was just in the process of hatching at the very moment I turned on the big screen – it was pushing its way out of the egg, shrugging off the top half of the shell with a little help from Maya. What a fantastic start to the day and a wonderful thing to witness.” These chicks should now be taking their first forays out of the nest, so hotfoot it down to Lyndon with your binoculars!
Osprey life
Ospreys generally lay their eggs in April, which hatch around late May. The birds feed on fish, which they look for by hovering over the water
or scanning it from a perch. When they go for their prey it is a dramatic sight, if you are lucky enough to witness it. With wings swept back, the osprey dives into the water, thrusting its talons forward at the last moment to seize the fish. Ospreys hunt in both salt and fresh water and at Rutland they eat mostly trout and roach. Adult birds are successful about once every four dives but juveniles take many more attempts. The young birds leave the nest after about seven or eight weeks, having been fed pieces of fish, principally by their mother. The nest, also called an eyrie, is a huge pile of sticks lined with bark, moss and grass. At Rutland Water these are set on top of long poles in the water. At about a month old, the fledglings preen and flap their wings until they can lift a short way above the nest, called ‘helicoptering’. Eventually they take their hesitant first flight. “The chicks are adult-sized by seven weeks old, so July and August are the best times to see the birds in flight” said Tim. “Photographers can also get spectacular views of ospreys fishing at nearby River Gwash Trout Farm, as this has become a favoured place for them to fish.” Instead of netting off his trout pools, the farm owner decided to play a pro-active role in the ospreys’ conservation. With the assistance of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, viewing hides have been built to allow photographers to capture the birds in action. The income generated helps to offset the loss of fish, while the 30,000 visitors who come annually to see the birds at Rutland Water provide many benefits to the local economy. Cause for celebration all round.

Visit www.ospreys.org.uk for further information, to see the ospreys on the live webcam or to orde r a copy of Tim’s book, The Rutland Water Ospreys, which charts the history and progress of the Project. Lyndon Visitor Centre (01572 737378) is accessed from the south side of Rutland Water between Manton and Edith Weston and is open daily from March to September. There is an Osprey Family Fun Day on 2 August from 10am to 3pm, featuring activities such as making osprey masks, feeding chicks and catching fish. Entry is £10 per family with no advance booking required. The centre is also looking for volunteers to help monitor the birds and inform visitors at weekends and on bank holidays until September. EDUCATION
Stamford Endowed Schools Lincs to India Project Words: Zishi Zhang
A
FTER winning the Discovering Democracy Award from the HM Cabinet Office this year, Stamford Endowed Schools is looking forward to taking the next step onto the international stage. Faye Harrison, head of the Philosophy & Ethics department at Stamford School, has set up the Lincs to India Committee after her education trip last year to Vellore which is located in Tamil Nadu, India. The Committee is running the project which aims to establish partnership and cultural exchange between Stamford Endowed Schools and two schools in Vellore. It is a student-led initiative, with Ms Harrison working alongside as the staff facilitator. Currently there are 24 members across different year groups in the team, chaired by Zishi Zhang (Year 12) from Stamford School with Phoebe Grigg (Year 12) from Stamford High School as deputy chair. Tamil Nadu is a region in the south of India, and it is usual that most ‘Southerners’ will not speak Hindi, but the local language of ‘Tamil’. It is thought that they feel this is a part of their identity as a people. Vellore is an extremely rural area, with great poverty pocketed within the most beautifully simple landscape. The main reason people are aware of this area is due to the work of Ida Scudder and the Christian Medical Centre (CMC). As a Tamil Medium school, Asharam is one of the schools where Tamil is spoken predominantly, and English is taught as a second language. An English Medium school has students who have a greater access to the English language, and probably a greater access to money and resources. The Tamil medium students have limited grasp of the English language, but schools recognise that for them to progress, they must learnt it. The Headmistress has substantially increased the percentage of passes and above in national qualifications. The students are very well cared for; however, there was a real need for investment. Students desperately need another classroom. On a basic level, they need money for posters, books and there are very few learning and teaching aids on the walls and in the view of the children. The headmistress at Asharam School, ‘Kali’ is very keen for us to correspond with her and the students. She is excited about the prospect of our students visiting and for some of her children to come to Stamford. We are working on making these links. The school has over 750 girls, with
some boys in the ‘12 standard’, which is the equivalent of UK sixth form, and some younger boys. There are two aspects to our project – the charity aspect, which we try to fundraise for these hard-working and eager-to-learn students in Vellore so that they won’t have to have lessons in the outside classrooms. Furthermore, we are in the process of sending books over to Vellore that we hope the students will be interested in and enjoy. The students there are very aware of the importance of learning English but they lack sufficient resources to do so. In the nearer future, we also look forward to introducing internet and computers into the two schools so we can communicate with each other easily. The other equally important aspect is culture. We would like to introduce the distinctive Indian culture to Stamford and vice versa. Our committee has been having frequent meetings to discuss different ideas. We are very excited that we are currently planning an ‘India Week’ in October to echo the Diwali Festival Week in India. During the week we will hold activities such as Rangoli art, learning how to cook Indian food, making Diya (Indian lamps). What’s more, to represent the growing relationship between our schools, we hope to plant a tree with Indian heritage in the school grounds. We have had donations from causal clothes day at school and we are looking forward to organising further fundraising activities. Some of our students have offered to perform music busking in town whilst others are looking to run a marathon! In the long term, we hope a trip will be organised so that our students can travel to Vellore to experience Indian culture and I’m sure they will receive the warmest welcome as Ms Harrison has seen their hospitality! The headmistress at Vellore school is equally excited about the idea that we may have students from Vellore visiting the U.K. to have a different experience. Although the Lincs to India project will start as a school initiative, we look forward to expanding the scheme to Stamford and surrounding area. For example, we are looking forward to holding an ‘Indian Day’ which will be open to the general public in 2017. • If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions please don’t hesitate and email Faye Harrison at FHarrison@ses.lincs.sch.uk or Zishi at 03ZhangZ@ses.lincs.sch.uk

INTERIOR DESIGN
Local Artists! Art work is one of the key pieces in a room that can make or break a scheme and allows visitors a peak into your inner personality. For me you should LOVE the art work in your home and think carefully about how it is displayed. Sometimes that means taking your time to find the right piece. Maybe these five talented local artists can tempt you! Rannveig Stone
KC Illustrations
Visit Katie Cardew’s website and you experience her lovely sense of humour, which is depicted in her illustrations. Having lived in and around Stamford for most her life, (apart from 5 years when she was travelling, attending university and working in London) she moved back to the locality 3 years ago and set up her illustration company KC Illustrations. Katie now lives in Oundle with partner Jamie, 9 month old daughter Agnes and springador, Tarka. Katie’s illustrations are mostly architectural and family orientated. Her favourite medium being “Boring old fine liners - I must get through 3 or 4 a week.” Who influenced her decision to do this as a career? “I realised that working in a non-creative role just wasn’t for me and because I didn’t train in art or illustration, the only way was to set up my own business. It was a risk, but once I took my first house commission, they kept rolling in. 3 years on and to date I have taken nearly 450 commissions…I love what I do, every day (except maybe paperwork days..)” She is now looking to expand the commercial side of her business into maps, wallpapers and other illustrated products. Katie will have a stand at Burghley Horse Trials in September and if you are keen to book in a commission, her turnaround time is around 3 months. “I work from photograph so once you have booked a slot; all I need is a photo or two of your chosen subject!”
Gillian Durno Paintings
Stamford born Gillian qualified in 1993 as a primary/art school teacher and took a job at a primary school in Ramsey. In the late 1990s she came back to the locality and began teaching art to adults as she was missing painting herself and also yearned for the area she grew up in. Married to Neil they now have a 14 year old son, Lloyd and about 7 years ago, following a course with local Rutland artist and mentor Alan Oliver, Gillian began participating in the annual Open Studios event. It was the sale of a small, framed, watercolour that made her realise that she could make a living out of her passion. “I specialise in contemporary floral, still life and impressionist landscape paintings in acrylic and mixed media. Texture has become an exciting feature of my work, I am interested in creating layers of texture be it with collage, masonry paint, polyfiller, acrylics and inks. ‘Scratching out’ areas of the paint and texture reveal exciting areas of under painting and add depth to the composition of the painting.” For the last 9 months Gillian has been busy building up a body of new original paintings which are to be launched by Alexander Miller of Duncan R Miller Fine Arts, St James’s, London. Following his purchase of one of her original paintings for his wife’s birthday from the Itch gallery in Oakham she has worked hard under his guidance, developing and reforming her style. 54

Karen Neale
With the support of her parents and art teacher, who agreed that taking art A-level was just as important as maths and physics, Karen qualified as an architect in the mid 90s. Having practiced in London until 2004, she made the leap of faith from being an employed architect to a self employed artist and illustrator. “Since leaving school my passion has been sketching and painting the world around me in my annotated, sketchbook diaries. Standing in situ I draw with a black biro as much as I can of what is going on around me, adding colour with my small field box of water colours. The notes I’ve made around the perimeter are of observations made whilst sketching. That is my ‘trademark’ style and many of my paintings and prints derive from these sketchbooks. I also create bespoke illustrations.” Originally from Spalding, Karen has been living in Stamford since 2010 with her husband and six year old son. “Everything I’ve learnt through architecture influences my work now. In 2001 I was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travelling Fellowship and undertook a journey inspired by World Heritage Cities and sites from London to Kathmandu recording it all in my sketchbooks.” Since then she has been ‘artist in residence’ at the Houses of Parliament, along Hadrian’s Wall, with the British Council in Havana, Cuba, at the Athenaeum and at Lord’s Cricket Ground as MCC Young Cricket Artist 2004-05. “Here in Stamford I’ve been involved in wonderful local projects, working with Burghley Horse Trials, Stamford School, Stamford Civic Society and Rutland Cycling to name a few.” Karen will be having her own ‘Open Studio’ and a few other events later on in the year and information on these will be on her website. Encouraged by her inspirational art tutor and a desire to escape algebra, René went on to study fine art in Durban and Cape Town, South Africa. From that a successful career in advertising design was born until 2002 when she abandoned London and moved to Cambridgeshire for a quieter life and to embrace her role as a mother. She has two adorable children. “Unable to control the need to create, I established “Murals and More” in 2003. I completed many projects for private clients, schools, hospitals and small businesses which included spectacular mural art for children as well as interior design projects locally and further a field. In 2004 I joined Peterborough Artists Open Studios as an exhibitor. I was swiftly co-opted onto the committee and produced the first (in 2006) and subsequent professional artist directories for the group until stepping down in 2012.” Open Studios is a highlight on the arts calendar. “It is always such fun and pleasure to welcome visitors into a relaxed environment where they can appreciate the art, enjoy homemade cake, chat to fellow artists and learn about our inspirations and techniques.” An exceptional and stylish Artist, René concentrates on paintings and ceramics. Her paintings tend to involve acrylic on canvas with added texture using sea sand pebbles sourced from the environment which inspires her work. “Ceramics developed from the use of texture in my paintings. I wanted to develop the tactile quality of my work. Manipulating clay into organic sculptural forms seemed a natural progression.”

Robert Fogell Gallery
Artist and Sculptor Robert Fogell, with his wife and business partner Diane opened The Robert Fogell Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Stamford in 2006. Robert’s early career as an apprentice to sculptor and sculpture conservator Paul Guidici at his studio in Geddington near Kettering, Northamptonshire taught him the interesting facets of sculpture conservation alongside art history and studio practice working with and for some of the premier collections of classical and modern sculpture and other objects of art in Britain, including Chatsworth House, Government Art collection National Trust/English Heritage, numerous museums and private clients. Since 1996 Robert has produced his own ideas carving primarily in stone and wood, whilst teaching at Northampton College and Leicester University. After curating a series of exhibitions over several years, it seemed a logical progression for them to open their own dedicated space to champion interesting, emerging modern and contemporary artists locally and nationally. They now have more than 50 artists who exhibit in the Gallery. Diane runs the day-to-day organisation, which allows Robert to continue developing his own artistic career as a sculptor in his studio at Burghley House.

STAMFORD PEOPLE
Kate Bateman Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to meet with Kate Bateman at her family’s auctioneers, to hear about her move into writing historical romances
T
HE Batemans epitomise a family business, with a strong family core and loyal, long-serving staff. The day I went down to the auctioneers to interview Kate, I was greeted by her father, sat down in a comfy sofa with a cup of coffee by his daughter Kate and introduced to her ever-animated brother Greg, who now runs the business. Greg’s vivid and enthusiastic descriptions of a piece of taxidermy and its provenance had one dreaming of starry Indian nights in the desert; and his research into a homing pigeoncounter, which no-one could identify for several weeks, put one in mind of a dedicated pigeon-fancier lovingly counting his homing pigeons in and out. What the family all posses in equal measure is charm, the enthusiasm to find out the history of an object and to convey their enthusiasm for it, to tell stories and bring the past to life. I suspect one always leaves a Batemans encounter feeling the better and merrier about life. Kate’s father Ron is a fine artist who in his spare time started to dabble in antiques. He set up an antiques shop in Oundle, and Kate used to help out in her holidays. Eventually he suggested to her she ‘go and learn about the small stuff’ (e.g. silverware, porcelain, jewellery…) whilst he focused on the furniture and paintings. In due course the family started to run auctions in the Corn Exchange in Broad St; and the business really took off as they embraced the internet and moved to the current premises in Ryhall Rd; they now hold regular auctions that reach an international audience through their online capability. Kate’s life meanwhile took a new direction as her husband’s job took the family to the midWest of America and, with three young children, she started to look for a new activity that could be done flexi time from home. She was worried that she ‘would go stir crazy’ if she didn’t do something and, on telling her husband that she had just read a historical romance and thought she could do much better, he bet her £1 that she couldn’t. Never one to turn down a challenge, she set to work immediately. Well. Here we are only a couple of years later, and she has been commissioned by the mighty Random House Publishing in New York no less to write a trilogy. The first one, ‘To Steal a Heart’, in which Kate brings Napoleonic France to life as a master spy and a beautiful thief find

Tips for aspiring writers:
take the plot forward at a pace, whilst enjoying all the historical detail that also comes so naturally to her. And does she plan her stories out in detail before she writes them? “Ah, the ‘plotter vs. the ‘seat of the pantser’ dilemma!” as she sums it up so neatly. Well, she declares herself to be a ‘pants-er’, although she does always have a clear idea of the overall arc of the story. “And there are certain conventions in a historical romance which readers expect,” Kate told me. “Susan Elizabeth Phillips so rightly says that if your hero is a fire-fighter, your heroine had better be an arsonist! But I always like to have happy endings!” What makes her work in particular stand out? “Well I like my heroines to get out and do things – they tend to be code breakers or counterfeiters. And I like to do my historical research well – of course the room settings – the texture and colour of the chaise longue my heroine sits on is very important!” Being Kate of course she is still very active in antiques, returning to the business regularly but also continuing to be a well-known face on the TV programmes Flog It and Bargain Hunt. She always tends to tell it as it is, again her natural communication skills coming to the fore. We wish her all the best. The books can be found and ordered at Amazon online.
1. Join a writers’ club - in Kate’s case it was the American Romance Writers of America (RWA) local chapter 2. Study craft books on ‘how to’ write; Kate learnt a lot from ‘Save the Cat’ by Blake Snyder and Debra Dixon’s ‘Goal, Motivation & Conflict’ 3. Enter writing competitions 4. Be authentic – many of Kate’s storylines, even the more outlandish ones, are based on real life observations 5. Go full throttle at it
love and intrigue in each other’s arms, is just out on Kindle and is proving to be a roaring success. She expects to publish the other two within the year. In many ways Kate comes to the genre with many advantages; she has a degree in English and has always enjoyed writing; she hails from a family that loves storytelling and understanding historical provenance; and she positively brims with energy and ideas, which enables her to

BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE
Leicester food & drink guide Leicester has a food and drink scene to match its recent footballing achievements. Here’s your guide to the best places… By Matt Wright & Tim Burke
N
OT so long ago, Leicester wasn’t far from a national joke. Adrian Mole’s hometown was – unfairly – regarded as boredom in city form, somewhere you went out of necessity, never desire. But now the once-grey Leicester is in the pink. First Richard III, then Ranieri and his ruthless Foxes (and, of course, it has always had a first-class rugby team). All that regal and sporting energy is being matched by a burgeoning food and drink scene, led by a fantastic independent sector. What’s more, Leicester is well under an hour on the train from Stamford and Oakham. So what are you waiting for? Here’s Great Food Club’s guide to some great places to visit in Leicester…
ST MARTIN’S SQUARE Highcross is where you’ll find John Lewis, Carluccio’s, and all the chains, but two minutes’ walk away is St Martin’s Square, where the far more interesting independents reign supreme.
Gelato Village
Gelato Village (2 St Martin’s Square) is an authentic Italian ice cream parlour whose owners hail from Turin. It produces gelato and sorbetto on the premises, using a traditional Italian churning method known as ‘mantecazione’. One of the best things about Gelato Village is its commitment to sourcing local ingredients, so all of Gelato Village’s milk comes from a herd of Red Poll cows at Belvoir Ridge Creamery in Eastwell, Leicestershire. And all sorbettos are made with fruit purchased at Leicester Market. The quality of the ice cream is superb: dense, creamy, luxurious gelato, and light, fresh-tasting sorbetto. These are served alongside excellent coffees, waffles and Italian pastries in a lovely, vibrant atmosphere that brings a little bit of Italy to Leicester. Gelato Village is open late – till 10pm Monday to Thursday and till 11pm Friday and Saturday.
45 West bar
45 West Bottle Shop & Bar (4a Hotel Street) is just outside St Martin’s Square and owned by Leicestershire-based artisan distiller 45 West, producer of Burleighs London Dry Gin. A bar and bottle shop combined, it showcases an excellent cocktail menu with an eclectic offering of fine wines, craft beers and, of course, Burleighs Gin. Elegantly decorated with a great atmosphere, 45 West is the perfect venue for the drinks enthusiast, with a specialist wine department overseen by expert Andrew Hill from wine and spirit merchant George Hill of Loughborough. www.coolasleicester.co.uk
St Martin’s Tea & Coffee (2-6 St Martin’s Square) is an artisan coffee roaster and loose leaf tea merchant that also serves fresh food and cakes. And on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 6pm-9pm, it plays host to Crafty Burger, one of the city’s most-talked-about and highly rated burger joints.
St Martin’s Tea & Coffee 33 Cank St (33 Cank St, St Martin’s Square) is a cool cocktail bar and café with a great range of drinks and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to while away a few hours sipping on Mezcal Margaritas and nibbling on Manchego cheese and sun-dried tomatoes.
QUEEN’S ROAD In the shadow of Leicester University, Queen’s Road links lively, bohemian Clarendon Park to the wealthy professional areas of Knighton and Stoneygate. It punches above its weight with an intriguing collection of independent restaurants, bars, delicatessens, butchers and grocers. It’s refreshingly free of pretension – an everyday thoroughfare but with a dash of style and character.

Christopher James Deli (60B, Queen’s Road) is many people’s idea of the ideal deli. It’s small, cramped even, but rammed to the gunnels with all sorts of wonderful produce waiting to be discovered. Cheese is the key element – Stilton and Red Leicester are ever popular but it’s the continentals that are probably the best sellers. Alongside the cheeses are a wide range of cured meats – salamis from Hungary, Germany, Italy and Denmark, and reflecting Clarendon Park’s longestablished Polish community, meats such as boczek, kabanos and weijska. Behind the counter stand oils, vinegars, condiments and a range of leaf teas and coffee beans. You’ll also find an impressive selection of pastas, biscuits for cheese, chocolates, chutneys and jams. Babelas Continental Bar (77 Queen’s Road) is named after the Afrikaans word for hangover and this is the area’s most laid-back, easy going bar. The feel is of a slightly down-at-heel living room, but it all gives rise to a friendly, intimate atmosphere that pulls in a mixed crowd. The wine selection is excellent, backed up with popular cheese boards. Award winning real ales (Landlord, Harvest Pale) and a wide range of whiskies are available too. Dos Hermanos/Barceloneta (54 Queen’s Road) are two linked venues. One side – Dos Hermanos – is a lively 1940s Cuban-themed bar, decked out with real flair. It does a roaring trade in cocktails and is packed at weekends for its celebrated Full Monty breakfasts and hangover-busting brunch dishes. The other side – Barceloneta (open evenings only from 6.30pm) – is a traditional-style tapas bar now established for over 20 years. Try dishes such as Asturian cod and chorizo pie or fresh tuna fishballs with pine nuts, cinnamon and herbs while you sip your choice of seven different sherries.

PROFILE
GARY SIMPSON
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF G SIMPSON BUTCHERS LTD Have you always lived in Lincolnshire? Yes, I am a Lincolnshire lad, born and bred. What made you decide to become a butcher? Shortly after taking my GCSEs a friend persuaded me to take a job in a local butchers shop in Helpingham, near Sleaford. I really enjoyed the job, and after gaining experience in several other butchers’ shops, in the area, I decided, at the age of 20, to become selfemployed and to go it alone. I set up my first shop at 21 years old. Since opening at the Stamford Garden Centre in 2014, how much further has the business expanded? The business has grown beyond all expectations. The first shop was opened in Heckington in 2001, followed by Sleaford in 2009. Lincoln, Spalding, and Stamford all came on board in 2014 and last year we opened a shop in South Hykeham. How many people do you employ? At present we are employing 32 people in positions as butchers, apprentices and counter servers. We are always looking for new apprentices with a good work ethic. James Taylor, one of our current apprentices, was chosen as one of 3 finalists in The UK Young Butcher of the Year 2015 competition. James has been with Simpsons since he was 16 and shows true commitment to his trade. Are you sourcing your meat locally as much as possible? You do not need to travel far to source top quality meat in Lincolnshire. We mainly use Wrights at Boston who provide us with beef, pork, and lamb. Seasonal game such as pheasant, partridge and venison comes from some of our local Estates. What are your thoughts on Rare Breeds? There is no consistency. It’s obviously a dangerous job being a butcher. How big is your first aid box and have you any gory tales of missing fingers? Touch wood, no major injuries to date. I do, however, remember stabbing myself in the leg once, but I have survived to tell the tale! Tell me a little bit about the progression of the butchers’ shops Ready-made meals are a growing part of the business, as is the online side, which we began 12 months ago. We are increasing our wholesale market to pubs and restaurants and have added a dry ageing cabinet in our flagship store at Heckington.
Does Simpsons make their own pies and pastries or do you outsource? All our meat pies and sausage rolls are made in-house and we cook our own hams. Is your rewards scheme successful? To date we have over 6,000 people signed up to it and it seems to work really well. Simpsons has won lots of Awards In 2013/14 and 2015 we were awarded Midlands and East of England Butchers Shop of the Year. In 2015 we also became Overall UK Butcher Shop of the Year with the Heckington Store. We are now unable to enter this competition for another 3 years to give someone else a chance! Very excitingly, you have recently been chosen to represent Great Britain in a butchery competition in Australia? Yes, I am lucky enough to be one of six Butchers chosen to represent Great Britain at The World Butchers’ Challenge in Queensland, Australia in early September. Our Team name is British Beefeater and we will be competing against Australia, New Zealand and France. What does the competition entail? We have 3 hours to prepare a full side of beef, pork and a whole lamb. We need to butcher them, display them and be creative. At the moment the team are meeting up and practising in Leeds, once a month. We have decided upon a theme, so we are working towards a visual, skilled and innovative display. Do you ever have time to take a holiday? I’ve only ever had 3 holidays, but hopefully when we are in Australia this year I might manage to take some time off. What interests do you have outside of work? I am a huge West Ham fan and I also enjoy Game Shooting over the winter months. What is your favourite food? It’s got to be Roast Beef, roast potatoes and vegetables. Give me an interesting statistic relating to the butchers. We produce 21/2 - 3 tonnes of sausages a week and sell around 3 tonnes of poultry!
You will find Simpsons Butchers at The Stamford Garden Centre, PE9 4BB. 01780 757499 www.gsimpsonbutchers.co.uk Opening Hours Monday – Saturday 9am-5pm Sunday 10am – 4pm Good Luck to Gary and all the team representing Great Britain in Australia, later in the year.

Barnsdale Hall Hotel & Spa
With a fantastic indoor pool, spa, tennis courts and 18 hole crazy golf I’m sure most people can find an excuse to stop off here. A selection of A la Carte Food is served in the Brasserie Restaurant with Sunday lunch proving to be very popular. The more informal Lounge Bar serves food all day.
having one too many, then pop your tent up and stay the night! (Camping and Caravan Club only - 07780 721638).
Venture onto Hambleton Island and you have the choice of two pit stops:
Hambleton Hall
This Michelin starred, Relais Chateaux hotel and restaurant, is probably not one for the sweaty, Lycra clad brigade, but if you are walking or driving around Rutland Water and want a very special lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, then this is the place for you. The setting is exquisite with wonderful gardens that run down to the water. Despite its Michelin star and grand appearance it’s not as expensive as you might imagine. Their lunch for less from Monday to Friday is £29 for 2 courses, add a third course for £8.50. This is a place to indulge, and to be indulged.
Finch’s Arms
Situated on the left hand side as you come into Hambleton, this pub has been extended and refurbished in the last few years. It has a wonderful terrace at the rear with plenty of seating and lovely views over the water. No dogs allowed inside or on the terrace. The food is excellent.
Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre @ Egleton
Run by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT) this is a wonderful area at the Oakham end of the water. With ample free parking and a small walk to the centre, it’s a glorious spot for a bit of twitching. Inside the visitor centre is a self-service coffee machine that serves Alterra Coffee, alongside a fridge stacked high with soft drinks and a few pre-packed sandwiches and savoury snacks. There are ice creams for hot and sunny days and a good selection of sweets and crisps. The shop sells some rather lovely bird related gifts. Outside there are a couple of picnic tables and seats to rest weary limbs. The extremely popular Bird Fair is based here from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st August 2016.
The Horse & Jockey Pub @ Manton
Situated directly on the cycle route as you come round the Egleton end of Rutland Water into Manton, this pub has a huge terrace, large car park and a vast number of bike racks. Not surprisingly awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2015, with long opening hours and an excellent pub menu this pub caters for all. The Patio can be hired for private functions and Barbeques. Opposite, lies the Horse & Jockey campsite, so if you are thinking of
Wellies Café @ Rutland Water Garden Nursery This inviting café situated inside The Rutland Water Garden Nursery, opened in February 2015. It seats up to 50 indoors and another 12 or so outside on the terrace. No dogs in the coffee shop but they are happily accommodated within the outside seating area. Ably managed by Alice Manby, with a team of helpful staff, this is a great place to stop on your circuit of Rutland Water. Wellie boot shape table numbers, pot plants in ceramic watering can plant pots and delicious wellie boot shaped butter shortbread served with every hot drink. Their Full English Breakfast has locally reared Hambleton Farm Fine Foods bacon and sausages. The lunch menu offers a daily homemade soup, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and paninis. All their cakes are made on site and they have a good selection with excellent scones. Afternoon Teas are served on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday by reservation only 01572 737059
Lyndon Visitor Centre and Nature Reserve
This little visitor centre is just the start of a magical part of Rutland Water. Situated on the South shore and looking out over the water to the magnificent Burley on the Hill House, standing proudly on the hill opposite. With a small shop, self-service Alterra Coffee machine and cold drinks available, it sets you up for a foray into the nature reserve. Whether you head towards Egleton through the nature reserve or follow the cycle track towards Edith Weston it is a tranquil place and teaming with nature. This has to be one of my favourite spots. Open daily from Easter until the end of August and run by volunteers of LRWT. They also run a programme of nature activities such as badger watching and osprey cruises. www.lrwt.org.uk
L’Oliveto @ Edith Weston
As you enter the car park at Edith Weston you can already smell the delicious garlicky aroma of Italian cooking. L’Oliveto is based just above the fishing tackle shop and has wonderful views over the water; you could almost be on the edge of Lake Como. Serving traditional Italian food they make everything on site, even their bread.
There is an extensive menu that includes Italian classics such as antipasta, pizza, charcoal grilled meats plus a blackboard specials menu offering luxuries such as lobster thermidor and scallops. Open all year round, this is a great venue for a party. Seating 150 people, they allow live music, and weather permitting the doors at the front of the restaurant, leading to the balcony can be flung open. It offers a relaxed and happy atmosphere. The terrace at the entrance and the back of the restaurant are both dog friendly, and complimentary parking is given to those who are dining. 01780 721599
Fardys Ice Cream Van & The View @ Normanton Church
Andy Fardell has based his ice cream van at Rutland Water for a few years now but this year he has persuaded Anglian Water to let him open up a food and drinks concession. The View looks like a retro garden shed, although Andy didn’t like my interpretation of it as a shed, and preferred his own wooden log cabin description! Situated in a great position just up from Normanton Church, and far enough from the car park to make you feel you have earned an ice cream or a cuppa. Also, hot sausage rolls, toasties, sandwiches and cakes. There are lots of picnic tables and individual seats, all with a wonderful view. The ice cream van serves traditional scooped ice cream and for those with intolerances, a locally made goat’s milk ice cream. This is the only ice cream van I know that offers the option of contactless payment and also Apple pay.
Normanton Park Hotel
This impressive looking hotel owned by Best Western, on the South Shore of Rutland Water has loads of outdoor space. A connecting gate leads to Rutland Water, and cycle racks are located just inside this. A children’s climbing frame provides entertainment for the little ones whilst you enjoy a relaxed drink or light lunch. Food is served from 12noon to 5pm with Afternoon Tea available between 3-5pm. Dogs are allowed in both the garden and the lounge areas.

Prenoa Jewellery and Accessories O
N the outskirts of Stamford, British history is being refashioned. Nestled in her quiet studio, Prenoa owner Becky uses ex-circulated imperial currency, turning it into unique jewellery and accessories. Every sixpence, three penny bit, shilling or farthing is cleaned entirely by hand and Becky believes this is imperative to the handmade roots of the business. She is passionate about her work, providing a one to one, imaginative service that unites little gems of British and Commonwealth nostalgia with thoughtful keepsakes. Most people have their favourite imperial coins, with the sixpence probably being the most recognisable because of its ‘lucky’ reputation... it has been stirred into Christmas puddings and placed in the shoe of a bride on her wedding day. The Prenoa product line has grown over the last four years, but mainly works with necklaces and bracelets for landmark birthdays, weddings and Christenings. The coin can be customised with a birthstone charm for the month of birth and sterling silver initials add extra personalised options. All other sixpences years are available
too, dating back to the mid 19th century. For a bride to be, a ‘something old’ garter charm or anklet makes a perfect token gift that can be worn on the special day (and cherished thereafter); said to ensure a happy and healthy marriage for the loving couple. As well as individual purchases, Becky also sells through handmade platforms Folksy and Etsy, as well as having her own website prenoa.co.uk. She ships all over the world and loves hearing the stories of friendship, love, remembrance and matrimony that inspire her clients’ purchases. In turn, these stories infuse inspiration for fresh ideas, creating a wonderful collaboration. Here in Stamford, Prenoa has just launched a bespoke local service for handmade sterling silver coin bangles, details of which can be found on the website. The combinations of finish and coins are endless, giving the client total control of the end result. Further charms can even be added at a later date, allowing the overall piece to evolve over time. • For more information about Prenoa, please visit prenoa.co.uk or email prenoajewellery@ gmail.com

HE village waved off 213 soldiers at the start of the Great War - 45 went on to lose their lives including no fewer than five brothers from the same Nicholls’ family. Three soldiers also died in the Battle of the Somme – a tragic episode which is now about to be commemorated nationally. The Battle of the Somme lasted just four months and saw more than 1.5 million killed, wounded or missing. To mark this momentous loss and remember those fallen, communities around the UK will be holding events to coincide with the moment the whistle sounded, at 7.30 on the morning of July 1st, signalling the time for the soldiers in the trenches ‘to go over the top’.
Villagers in Easton will blow a whistle before lighting 45 candles at their war memorial at 7.30 on Friday morning – remembering all of those from the village who lost their lives. There will be a weekend of commemorations with a Somme campaign exhibition, part of the village’s own WW1 exhibition. The exhibition will run from 10am-4pm on Saturday and from 11am on Sunday (together with a soup kitchen) following a Commemoration service, led by Stamford Brass Band. “Our village population in 1914 was just over 500; to watch 213 of this number go off to war, and many of them not return, had a devastating impact on the families living here and we can never and should never forget this,” explained Andrew Baker, who together with fellow Easton villagers, Jim Mason and Ted Ford, has been responsible for organising the Somme event with support from Pat and Patricia Firth of the village history group. The five sons from the Nicholls’ family who died in action during the First World War were Arthur in 1915, Charles in 1916, and Cecil, George and John in 1917. Their stories have been researched and are told as part of the village exhibition. “I think I have heard of one other village where six brothers went off to fight and after the fifth one was killed in action, their mother wrote to the War Office asking that her sixth remaining son was granted permanent leave to return home. Her wish was granted,” added Andrew.

EATING OUT
Il Vicolo Ristorante Italiano – ‘wine and food art’ Nicholas Rudd-Jones was a bit of a latecomer to discovering this (not so new any more) Stamford eating establishment
I
L VICOLO, a classic and authentic Italian restaurant in Cheyne Lane, has been in business now for eight months and has become a firm favourite. It is owned and run by chef Mimmo, a larger than life character, son of a fisherman from the Adriatic coast, passionate about food and especially passionate about authentic Italian food. We went to try it out one early summer evening and found an ambience where all the other diners, in large groups, families or couples all seemed to be relaxed and enjoying themselves. This sense of conviviality sets the place apart and puts you in the mood to enjoy the evening. We found the service very friendly, and the waiter was always happy to pause for a chat and talk more about the plans for the continuing development of the restaurant, including ongoing enhancements to the décor. But what of the food? Well, we dicovered all our dishes to be well cooked and quite classical in their construction i.e. well-made sources, rich and traditional ingredients and plentiful portions. For starters, my companion chose the Giant King Prawns sautéed in garlic and chilli; and as I nicked one, I can confirm her view that these were delicious. I meanwhile tried the parcels of puff pastry filled with goat’s cheese. I am a fan of goat’s cheese and these didn’t disappoint. For the main course, my companion chose the ‘Tortelloni al Funghi Porcini’, which turned out to be the ‘hero’ dish of the evening, with a distinct wild mushroom zang and great moreishness. I had the rather sophisticated ‘Branzino alla Livonese’, fresh sea bass cooked in a sauce of tomato, peppers and spicy salami. Beautifully presented and an indication of just how accomplished the cooking is here. A huge, incredibly fresh and indulgent ‘Tiramisu Classico’ was good to share for dessert, a couple of espressos and we left with a sense of great contentment and satisfaction. • Il Vicola, 2-3 Cheyne Lane, Stamford, PE9 2AX Tel: 01780 480048 www.ilvicolostamford.co.uk

Ballroom Blitz B
ACK in January, as the news broke of David Bowie’s unexpected passing, Stamford resident, Ruthie Hudson and lead guitarist of one of the Midland’s finest cover bands, The Vinegar Strokes, were drinking wine and discussing the idea of the band playing in Stamford. The following week the band was booked and Ballroom Blitz was born! On September 10th the beautiful Ballroom at the Stamford Arts Centre will play host to an evening of entertainment where the band will get you dancing to covers from artists such as The Strokes, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Prince and even some Girls Aloud (like you’ve never heard them before). DJ James Swift will be on the decks & Kelly from the Stamford Deli will be serving some delicious Mediterranean cuisine. All money raised will be going to various charities including Cancer Research UK and Sue Ryder. The event is also raising awareness for a national campaign called Changing Places who help raise money to install toilets in towns and cities for people with profound disabilities. The night will take on a festival vibe with Sue Ryder Vintage in Peterborough bringing along a pop-up shop so you can grab a chic new outfit whilst raising money for some amazing causes. Alongside the event, Ruthie is running a raffle so if you can’t make it on the night you can still be involved. Stamford Handmade On Sat 16 July 10am-4pm Stamford Handmade returns to the Stamford Arts Centre to showcase the creative talent of local crafters.
S
TAMFORD Handmade is a not-for-profit creative group of local artists, crafters and lovers of all things handmade. Members of Stamford Handmade believe that the passion and care that goes into a hand crafted item cannot be beaten. Starting out as the Stamford Artisans Guild, the group has grown and developed over time, and to reflect this evolution the membership decided to change its name to Stamford Handmade. All the products available at this event at Stamford Arts Centre are exclusively handmade locally which means you will not find any big brand franchises or bought in goods. In the world of mass production, come along and buy a distinctive item which has been made locally rather than on the other side of the world. This event showcases a wide range of local crafters who will be behind their stall so available to talk to visitors about their craft and products. • Stamford Handmade can be found online at stamfordhandmade.myfreesites.net Facebook: www.facebook.com/stamfordhandmade

STAMFORD PEOPLE
Stamford’s new Poet Laureate
Camilla McLean Interviewed by Antonia Scott
Tell me a bit about yourself… “I was born in Langham, Rutland and went to Oakham School before we moved to Scotland later in my teens. My mother had fashion shops in Stamford and Oakham, and my father also had businesses locally. I read languages at Edinburgh University and spent time in Madrid and Paris. Since then my work in advertising has taken me to London and Dubai. At the end of last year I left the rather hectic Saatchi & Saatchi to pursue my personal writing, yoga and to help my boyfriend, Matthew Cox who is an antique dealer, and my mother’s business, The Pickled Village.”
Camilla’s winning p oe become Stamford’s m to n Laureate 2016 – 20 ew Poet 17
When did you start writing poetry? “Apparently I wrote a poem about how disgusted I was by various cough mixtures when I was about 6; at 12 I wrote a rap called ‘Population Explosion’ for my English homework; and at 14 I wrote a poem called ‘Sonnet to the Suburbs’ about migraines for a festival in Glasgow. However, it was in Dubai that I was inspired to write and perform with a firebrand group of poets called ‘The Poeticians’ – I was generally considered the light relief. Since my return to the UK I’ve loved the Pint of Poetry sessions in the Cellar Bar at the Arts Centre and now being Stamford’s poet laureate, I have the best reason ever to write more: to enthuse people about poetry and inspire them to pen and even perform their own.” What or who inspires you? “My poetry has sort of evolved out of writing Facebook status updates - it’s what gave me the confidence to actually write creatively again. I also take inspiration from poets like Mark Grist, Luke Wright, Emily Berry, John Cooper Clarke and Grace Savage as well as the legends that are Pablo Neruda, Dorothy Parker, Shakespeare and Edwin Morgan to name far too few.” What drives and motivates you? “Getting people to sit up and listen, possibly against their instincts. Reading on the high street is the best for that.” Do you have a mantra/quote that you connect with or get inspiration from? “I have a t-shirt that says ‘petit à petit’ (little by little) that often inspires me creatively. I think that starting a new creative project, whatever it may be, is a daunting prospect. If you can let yourself off the hook by not expecting to get

XYZ X and I thought we were the perfect co mbination. I didn’t know he wa s X at the time, we thought we’d be together infinitely. In mathematics, X is commonly used as the name for an independent varia ble or unknown value. An independent va riable you certainly were but not so much as I. Silly I. I didn’t appreciate yo ur unknown value. And now, though yo u’re X, I can be very proud to have been Mrs X. to the final destination in one leap but rather accept you need to take a step at a time then you’re much more likely to get there. I wear the t-shirt when I need that reminder.” Is there a person that you admire or aspire to be like? My super Zen sister, my parents (for their extraordinary energy), Will.I.Am (for his excellent turn of phrase), my determined brothers and my wise, creative boyfriend! I think almost everybody has something admirable about them. Tell Stamford Living readers something that might surprise them about you! I trained to be a yoga teacher at the start of the year.
And still might still have been if Y hadn ’t entered the equation. Y oh Y. Silly I. Y marched in and I sighed, X + Y + I equals... Well, it does not ad d up. X was subtracted an d then... I would like to say as little as possible ab out Y. Looking back, Y is all there is to say. Then I was all alone , regretting the prob lems I had caused. But then, though I wa sn’t looking for Z, and Z wasn’t lookin g for I. It turned out to be the magic combination. I can say that maths has never been a str ong point, but with Z it all adds up perfectly. Z is where it all ends . Nothing will divide me from Z. Z’s the coefficient wi th whom I’ll always share my bed.
